often find ourselves lost in today. It's a refreshing reminder of renaissance architecture that serves as a sanctuary to antiques, subtle textures and soothing palettes. Every inch of the house is an accurate depiction of the seamless elegance and subtlety that defines Shiren Jumani's persona. Its a home that cherishes hereditary artifacts and combines the essence of family and art as it transforms with those who live within its four walls.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The only person in the subcontinent to complete Swissman! Ironman is considered to be one of the world's most difficult one day sporting event consisting of a 3.89km swim, 180.25km bike ride (bicycle) and a full marathon of 42.2km. This trio, swim, bike, run is structured in this order and race time is 17 hours without a break. The first Ironman took place in Konami, Hawaii in 1978.

2017

ghalib s alam Tell us about your experience a). The Swissman experience is a life changing experience. It demands a lot of input from the athlete both physically and mentally due to the extreme terrain. The amazing part is that you get to travel from one end of Switzerland near the Italian border, takes you across three mountain passes and lands you in the heart of Switzerland, at the base of one of the tallest Alps in the Jungfrau region. The route is scenic, breathtaking offering stunning vistas of the Alps as you ascend the mountain passes and at idyllic taking you through picture perfect cobblestone towns. The best part is that the country is clean and takes pride in keeping it clean. If you and I were to throw rubbish on the ground, rest assured some person will come along and pick it up. I have gained a huge respect for the people and their culture. And customs, and Swiss are known for being punctual, valuing time. To the dot. Not a second here or there. Even during the race I had to comply by cut-off times. There is sportsman spirit and camaraderie and you get to be with the best athletes in an epic race. How would you describe the triathlon event (marathon) a). Ironman triathlons are considered one of the worlds toughest one day sporting events consisting of a 3.89km swim, 180.25km cycling, followed by a full marathon of 42.2km. This trisport event is structured in this order: swim, bike, run and is to be completed within 17hours. Swissman is an extreme triathlon event. It has typically Ironman distances, taking the athlete from point to point with minimal support from the organizers and relies completely on the supporter. In fact supporter role is mandatory and without a designated supporter you cannot apply for participation. In my case, my wife was my supporter whose role was to fuel my nutrition throughout the course, support me at transition stations, like from swim to bike, and also to meet me at designated spots throughout the course. The supporter has to drive a designated car and more than a car per athlete is not allowed as certain mountain passes are very narrow and treacherous like the ones we have in our northern regions. b). Typically, around 2,000 athletes apply for slots and 250 2017

are selected on a lottery basis as long as they meet minimum requirements. Majority of the athletes are based in Europe and have the added advantage of training in the mountainous terrain. c). The race has to be completed within 19 hours and successful finishers and their supporters receive special finisher t-shirts. It is a test of both mental and physical endurance and stamina. You are the first person in Pakistan to have completed Swissman. How does it feel? a). Incredible! I am absolutely humbled and feel extremely proud to have been able to earn a Swissman finisher title for my country. My grounding and formative years have been spent in Pakistan and giving back to motherland is a very 50

2017

special feeling. I cannot describe it. We owe it to her. We owe it to Pakistan! How long have you been practicing for this event? a). I would describe this as my journey and it started way back in 2013. I reignited my love and passion for sports being a national junior swimming champion in the eighties. It was not swimming that reintroduced me to the sport, in fact, it was running. I competed in a relay for a fundraising event for a well renowned charity in Pakistan. At that time, I had transitioned to Canada and the love of homeland always had a strong pull. There was no looking back after the first race. I was introduced to the world of triathlons by my neighbor, himself an active sportsman. There was huge learning curve as now instead of one, there were three disciplines involved and each one demanded a different set of muscles. I self-trained myself, surrounded myself by the right people, and challenged myself to higher levels of the sport. I eventually managed to complete what is considered the toughest Ironman triathlon in North America, under the Pakistani banner, in 2015. When that didn't prove challenging enough, I searched up options for extreme sports on the Internet and I discovered Swissman. I participated in 2016 and had to pull out midway due to a thunderstorm. Capitalizing on my experience, I went ahead and applied for this year, was selected and started my full fledged training which involved 3-4 hours of cycling, running and swimming on a daily basis. It was not easy, as I had to balance my work/fitness schedules. I had no choice other than to start my day at 4.30am and call it a day by 9.30pm. I had to put aside all other commitments, including my family. I have no regrets, as they have been extremely accommodating and encouraging in my endeavors. Advice to inspiring youngsters a). Stay focused! Work / education is priority. Devise a goal. Start planning and be flexible. Understand your body demands and functions and work according to your strengths and overcome your weaknesses. Make good choices and wise decisions in life. Know what will help you in your dream, and know what to stay away from. Healthy lifestyle choices will follow automatically. Remember you are what you eat. And put stress, short-term stress, to good use in your body. Be relentless and persevere in your efforts.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? We took a 7 day Norwegian Cruise named "Escape" which started from Miami. It was mainly around the Caribbean island and the destinations included Roatan Bay, Bahamas and Cozumel. Norwegian Cruise line is known to be one of the finest in the world hence we were eager to experience it and visit the most breathtaking islands of all time. It was all worth it! Who did you travel with? My entire family- parents and my two sisters. Where did you stay? We stayed in the cruise- NCL, and the name of the cruise was escape.

What are the best shopping spots there? Our main purpose for this trip was to explore and travel so shopping was not our first priority so we didn't shop as we had limited time at each city hence We spent all our time sightseeing. Suggest some amazing restaurants there? We used to have such a heavy breakfast in the cruise we barely had a chance to try restaurants outside, however one restaurant that I loved at Cozumel was 'Hooters', it had amazing Mexican food and a beautiful seaside view. 6- Tell us about the sights noon should miss out on A couple of them Honduras: Carambola Botanical Gardens Trails, If
