freedom is a state of mind by sonya rehman Two close friends of mine (a man and a woman) recently registered (separate) blogs and have begun writing anonymous blog posts about sex, homosexuality, weight loss, love, divorce, etc, in Pakistan. To be honest, I’ve been having an absolute ball reading their blogs. I don’t get to see them very often, but when I do, conversation is free flowing, random, and of course, painfully honest. I find it so refreshing to talk to people who are honest about their lives, it’s such a great way to connect, to break through facades and to just let loose really. In Lahore growing up, I’ve always found society to be very repressed, but over the past few years it has certainly become much better. When my mother was a young woman, divorce was so taboo to talk about. Not anymore. Anyway. Today, guess what? I went to the bank to withdraw some dosh from the ATM and I spotted this super cool gori in a saucy red biker jacket and track pants pull out her mountain bike from the car park and bike off down the road. Blondie made my heart skip a beat. Dhug dhug. And I thought, damn girl, why can’t you do that? I looked at blondie with complete envy. She looked ballsy and confident. It made me realize something: in Pakistan, we – all of us – have grown up in a Culture of Exploitation. A Culture of Subliminal (and direct) Verbal Nastiness. And that in itself has made us live half-lives, have major confidence issues, question ourselves, question our 46

2014

worth – because we don’t see ourselves from our own eyes, but the judgmental eyes of society. Remaining comfortably within a cocoon of fat, self-preservation, and a complete lack of freedom. The Freedom to Choose. We simply cannot make our lives any different. Change? Oh my God, you’ve got to be kidding. Thanks, but no thanks. I’m happy in my rut, sir. I’m happy in my fat suit. I’ve felt it all my life. The verbal nastiness. Everyone I know and have interacted

with has put up with it too, lived through it, and replicated it in their dialogue and interaction with others. So have I. When I came back from the US, I was a complete tub of lard. I’d put on 15 kilos thanks to a generous student budget (thanks, Fulbright) that allowed me to morph into Sloth Queen and stuff on junk while racing around New York covering stories and attending classes. I was a fat sack of shit. I’m still chubby, but not as bad as I used to be (see, I’m putting myself down again, see what I mean, this is built into our psyche! All us Pakis are installed with little self-deprecating humour chips!). Anyway. So ya. When I got back from the US in my Havana flip-flops feeling like king-pin, the first thing I got was: “Wow, Sonya? Is that you? Wow. For a minute I didn’t recognize you!” (cue light giggles from Ch**tia Party) Um, okay. And what did I say? “Haan yaar, I’m SO sorry I became so fat. Terrible na? I’m horridly sorry you couldn’t recognize me parading around the super market like Fat Bast**d.” Okay that’s not exactly what I said, but my response was certainly, heavily peppered with an apology, or apologies if you may. So I got FAT, dude. Bite me. Actually, don’t. But you see. That’s what it’s like in Pakistan. You’re put down for your appearance and instead of fighting back with a cute/sharp comeback, you freaking apologize. And then there’s the flip-side to it. The day you fly out of your house looking like Cindy Crawford, damn, watch them kiss your feet. It’s all very unsettling. I’ve never been fat all my life – my weight always fluctuated, depending on when I was in love (gag). Therefore I know what it’s like to be Prom Queen one day and Fatty Bombatta the next. Anyway, my point is this: why have we put up with this abuse for so long? What gives anyone the right to comment on your weight, your looks, your marital status, your LIFE for pete’s sake?

And then there’s the judgment that comes if you’re in your 30s and still single. But that’s a topic for another day. However, my heart especially bleeds (really, BLEEDS) for close friends who have been subjected to the Rishta Years where rishta upon rishta, they have been sized up and assessed by retarded, judgmental families and their equally retarded sons during Disco Trolley Sessions. By the way, I’m not generalizing. There are some wonderful Pakistani families out there (who go the arranged marriage route), who are champion folks, who don’t subject poor girls to scorn and rapid fire questions, while assessing their skin tone, weight, features, clothes, etc. Recently, a dear friend of mine lost a good 60 kilos. Her weight gain over the past few years had been frightening – PRIMARILY from a health perspective. But I nearly cried when I saw her recently. She was radiant, beautiful, her energy was different – she was ALIVE. She was HAPPY. She was finally who she had always been inside that heavy cloak of armour that she’d lug around all her life. She made a choice. She did it because she wanted to do it. And I asked her, did she get upset with those who used to treat her like sh*t in the past – and who now, treated her with respect and acceptance? Yes, she’d responded, she was dealing with rage issues on that front. I understood how she felt. Freedom really and truly is a state of mind. While Pakistani society can be restrictive, repressive, downright cruel and judgmental, you really need to do whatever it takes to wrench free from society’s expectations of you and do what you need to do. For instance, don’t lose weight to score brownie points with the Ch**tia Party — do it for yourself. Similarly, don’t get hitched to someone you aren’t compatible with just to gain society’s stamp of approval – marry someone who stirs something within you… Me? I’m going to buy a mountain bike. But first, I’m going to learn how to ride one. 2014

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Tell us about your favourite or one of your favourite destination spots. Where did you choose to go and why? Booking a flight to the States was literally out of spontaneity. I had no idea there would be so much to see and do here. I travelled around the east coast and ended up loving New York, Boston and Miami the most.

In New York, you can't miss out on Macy's. And if you’re all about buying shoes, DSW is the place you need to be! You’ll probably get the best items on sale in these two stores, although I must warn you if you end up going to either of these stores you'll spend 3 times more than your intended shopping budget. Don’t forget to make a trip to the closest outlet malls, you'll cover most of the popular brands there.

Where did you stay? I stayed at a friend’s place in New York. In Miami I stayed at this hotel called The Palms Hotel and Spa, it’s literally set in the heart of Miami Beach.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Oh my! So many to list. Okay so I'm not going to talk about the fancy restaurants as one could simply yelp it. Rather a few small places worth mentioning that New Yorkers suggested and I loved; Artichoke Pizza on 1st Ave was a delight, if you want the best freshly baked cookies 'Levain Bakery' is where you need

What is the best shopping spots there?

I stumbled upon Panera Bread while walking around Fenway Park in Boston and I've never had such great tasting healthy food. Later I saw a bunch of outlets in New York as well so you know where to go if you're a health freak. Do try the grilled chicken avocado salad!

travel diaries

Miami: Of course without question you head to South beach, put a lot of sun block on otherwise you’ll come back like a rotten tomato. Everything else is close by South beach. Suggest places for a perfect night out. For me a perfect night out in New York was going to a Broadway show followed by a dinner at this restaurant on a roof top called '230 Fifth', with a decent view. If you’re into musicals then Chicago is a must watch. Oh and best buy is to book online on Viator, print out your tickets and you’re good to go. Finally, any tips? Yelp everything! Oh you need be clever regarding your packing. Don’t bring a lot of clothes if you’re planning to go crazy shopping. You’ll regret later when you’ll run out of space. For New York, carry a comfortable pair of shoes, you’re in for a ride to walk a lot. And don't forget to purchase a Metro Card. Simply because New York has the best subway system in the world as far as I know, you could possible get to anywhere within minutes as oppose to driving or taxi.

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on. I'm going to start with the non touristy thing people end up doing in Boston: Cheapest sky diving! It's one of the best experiences I've ever had. Now moving towards the touristy stuff. See if you travel a lot you realise that most places that highlighted by the media, how-

Visiting here are a few: New York, you need to rent out a bike and explore Central Park. Of course head to Times Square, I would recommend heading there at nighttime. Take a tourist bus from … to see statue of liberty and around town, the bus pretty much covers the whole sight seeing agenda.

Miami lovers are all about seafood. If you’re into sushi you’re at the right place. You need to have sushi at this Peruvian restaurant called SuViche Sobe and order coconut rolls. Trust me it’s not all that coconutty unless you’re afraid of coconuts, I'd say just go have them! The rest of the menu you have plenty of fish to choose from. Dinner head to this street … full of restaurants, you have … for good Mexican and … for good Italian. You have plenty to choose from.

Look out for your fellow humans as the week begins and all will go well. On Monday and Tuesday, you may need to curb your natural competitiveness (and use your ample charms instead) to get ahead. On Wednesday and Thursday, you’re lost in your own thoughts — and they’re not all pleasant, unfortunately. Expect to butt heads if you put those cranky notions into action. (Or better yet, just lay low for now.) On Friday and Saturday, you’re back to your optimistic, outgoing self, so seek out some adventure. On Sunday, trust your abilities — and the abilities of others to help.

If you’re expecting boredom as the week begins, prepare to be (pleasantly) disappointed. Your routine gets some spark on Monday and Tuesday and you should follow up on any chance for fun — even if it means your work has to wait. On Wednesday and Thursday, your passions will push you into action. Just make sure they don’t push you into trouble, too. On Friday and Saturday, your trademark patience will pay off. Now is the time to pause and ponder, even if others are rushing ahead. This Sunday, get good and grounded. Someone in the know will give you the gift of enlightenment.

Every week should begin this way! You’re full of energy and enthusiasm on Monday and Tuesday — and you’ve got ample charm to inspire others at home, at work or anywhere. Expect to slow down on Wednesday and Thursday, though: You’ll be more intent on analysis than action. That unusual intelligence and insight should carry you well into Friday and Saturday, when you can put those ideas to work — and you can expect some help from a likeminded partner to make things happen. On Sunday, be flexible. Use your trademark flexibility to adapt to the unexpected.

Watch for troubles on the home front as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday could both bring domestic conflicts, but a little empathy on your part could go a long way. By Wednesday and Thursday, emotions are running high. That can lead to excitement in romance and relationships — but amped-up emotions spell nothing but trouble for any financial or legal issues. Play it safe. On Friday and Saturday, give your super-sensitivity a break and take some time out for yourself. This Sunday, find an imaginative way to deal with a problem.

Everybody is on your side as the week begins. And how could they not be? You’ve got all the answers (and you’re having all the fun!) on Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy the popularity. On Wednesday and Thursday, you’ll quiet down ever so slightly — now is an excellent time for chin-rubbing introspection and quiet analysis. You’ll kick back into action just in time for the weekend and you can expect applause, affection and admiration wherever you take your dramatic presence. On Sunday, help yourself out by helping someone else.

Show some prudence on financial matters as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both bad days for impulse purchases — but they’re great days for other kinds of exuberance, like spontaneous opinions and wide-eyed ideas. On Wednesday and Thursday, indulge your intellect by striking up conversations and following your curiosity. On Friday and Saturday, resist the urge to rush ahead. Sometimes the most daring — and worthy — risk is to kick back and just let things happen. On Sunday, rest on your laurels. Your hard work has paid off and it’s time for some fun and romance.

Who can resist your flirtatious smile and easygoing outlook? Nobody, at least not as the week begins — you’ll be charming socks off by the score on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday, you might still be generous with your attention, but you’ll be stingy with your cash. Put that fiscal fussiness to use by plotting out a smart financial plan. On Friday and Saturday, you’re full of yourself — but in a good way! You’ve got a lot to say and you’re surrounded by people who want to hear what’s on your mind. On Sunday, take some quiet time for yourself.

The week could start on a difficult note. Your heart and your head can’t seem to agree on Monday and Tuesday and this might be a better time to think than act (especially if you can count on some back-and-forth banter with friends). Your outlook on Wednesday and Thursday should clear up dramatically, finding you exceptionally charismatic and confident. You’ll know what you want and you’ll know how to get it. On Friday and Saturday, you can expect to get caught up in the moment. Somebody persuasive wants to sweep you up in their plans, but you can count on your instincts to guide you. On Sunday, start something new.

aquarius

pisces

Expect to make close connections as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both perfect days for getting your point across and winning over friends (and maybe even making new ones). Wednesday and Thursday see you slowing back down and turning inward, as thoughts shift to the big picture. Are you making enough progress in your chosen work? On Friday and Saturday, others will expect you to take charge — but in a fun way! Organize an outing (or a party maybe?) with friends both new and old. Don’t bother trying to accomplish anything on Sunday. Just try to kick back and enjoy the day.

Watch out for conflict as the week begins. Others might not be on your side on Monday and Tuesday and even former partners could have ambitions at odds with your plans. Don’t be afraid to toss out the old in favor of the new and on Wednesday and Thursday be extra careful of anyone trying to take advantage. Stand up for yourself and don’t back down! If you can formulate a smart plan on Friday and Saturday, expect to have luck on your side. The stars will aid your efforts to do the right thing. On Sunday, take the lead. Others will look to you to provide direction — or to point the way towards someone else who will.

Who loves you, baby? Everybody, apparently — or at least it’ll seem that way as this week begins. Friends and admirers will rally to your banner on Monday and Tuesday and it’s a good time to make your wishes known. You can expect an attentive audience. On Wednesday and Thursday, that outgoing mood could shift to shyness. Maybe it’s time for some peace and quiet to recharge? By Friday (and on into Saturday), you’ll be back to your jovial, genial self and you can count on having fun even if things don’t go the way you planned. On Sunday, do something truly unique and original — even if it’s just a small, symbolic gesture.

Your ambitiousness will pay off as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both great days to start projects and make things happen. Everyone might not be on the same over-achieving wavelength right now, but they’ll at least have the good sense to get out of your way. Wednesday and Thursday should give you time and perspective to step back and re-assess where you’re at — and you can count on friends to help you take accounts. On Friday and Saturday, you need to stay disciplined in the details, but try to let your mind roam to suss out the big picture. On Sunday, you’ve got the brains and brawn to accomplish anything.
