Peach and white together make for a soothing Summer look. I loved the playful sequin disk detailing on the sleeves, and the cut made for a super comfy apparel. Keeping it easy, I just popped on a pair of Chanel ballerinas and was good to go!

janat sohail aziz is a singer and a songwriter. a fifth year student of architecture at national college of arts having remained a former artist at nescafe basement, she has now come up with a band called wooly and the uke- it caters to a completely different genre, the indie genre. her new track called circus is coming out now. it is a satirical comment on the shallowness of the capitalist driven society today.

music chick janat sohail aziz What is the idea behind Circus?

Well, it’s my angst- this bizarre hole of phantasmagoria where our heads swirl in fleeting moments, almost melting and remerging as we pour into this grand scheme of things.

What inspired you to write about it?

Have you ever seen a person? Really seen them? It’s sometimes pitiful to watch humans. We circle around in this rat race, climbing over each other’s heads, nibbling on our dreams while hidden away in secret corners- our little endeavours to take over the world. We exist in the absence of our presence and only so often our frail bodies stumble upon what they carry inside. This human condition has always existed as a series of surreal images in my head and that’s what inspired me to really describe them in words.

Just the teaser out and people were awestruck by the way it felt spine chilling- how was it visualized and achieved?

The idea fell through effortlessly like collapsing dominos- from the producer to the narrative to the director, each element was delicately intertwined with the others and experienced growth from there. Awais 2017

*ABOUT ME Gohar, the director and a close friend of mine, always shared this inexpressible energy with me and he, along with his team, understood that emotion the song carried- a veiled turmoil, a cold state of an end coming.

What does making music mean to you?

I’ve always believed this- for me, music is less about creating something that is just the right fit for appreciation and more about stripping yourself of your most valuable emotions and lending them to those listening.

It is art, after all.

How do you come around to writing a song?

As humans, whether we realize it or not, we’re deeply enveloped in emotions- these exist as continuously evolving visuals in my head. I feel emotions taking forms, dissolving in the realm of my imagination and pouring out as quivering words dusted on a tune.

People loved you in the Nescafe Basement- what encouraged you to make Wooly and the Uke? Nescafe Basement has been quite a positive push- it has helped me grow as a person and explore what I want better. Even before I understood the different genres, I always had this indescribable inclination towards indie music. It felt like it fit the little spaces in my head effortlessly and I felt cozy with what poured out of my ukulele. Wooly and the Uke is my safe place, I had to do it.

So we see that Wooly is an important band member, what is his role in your band?

It’s a funny story- so a phoofy, grey monster adorned in delicate dust bunnies decides to enter my life and ignite some romance as an adolescent, only to leave me hanging. A few years in, things get less awkward and we decide to share a bed again. All the while I believed he was secretly snuggling my head in sleep, he was actually rewiring my brain with his carefully plucked crinkled eyelashes to name my band after him.

It worked and here we are!

You recently performed at the Lahore Music Meet- how was your experience?

Felt right at home. The founders, the performers, and the audience- everyone had a beautiful world within themselves and it’s always the most fulfilling when your audience listens, feels and reciprocates.

When do we hope to hear more music from you?

I’m always writing one thing or the other, but it’s only when it makes it to the studio that it really gets out there for a lot of people. I do plan on releasing some very soon, till then I’d love to have more of the little performances to connect with my people.

Which musician is your absolute inspiration?

In this era, Sufjan Stevens- definitely!

What other instruments do you enjoy playing?

When Wooly’s taking a nap on my ukulele, I usually resort to my Tonbak these days.

Do you have any secret talents?

My head grows symmetrically aligned curls? Will that count?

Do you listen to the kind of music you create- or are you into other genres too?

Oh, I can never stop dancing to Latin Jazz!

What is the last played song on your playlist?

Everlasting Light – The Black Keys Do you ever like to do any covers?

I do take inspiration from good music, but prefer singing my own thoughts- it’s a better catharsis for me.

How would you describe your style?

Scruffy hair and old t-shirts.

Loose setting powder: A cult favourite silky powder that creates a modern matte finish and absorbs oil and reduces shine all day long. Surely an award-winning product!

Concealer: Say good bye to dull, dark under eyes and discolouration with my benefit concealer! It contains pink undertones to colour correct under eyes and imperfections, giving a radiant finish! Cant leave home without this one.

Brow wiz: Anastasia Beverly Hills brow wiz is an ultra-slim retractable pencil which has a fine tip to spot-fill areas and the other end blends for a flawless finish. A long wearing smudge proof formula which mimics natural hair!

Liquid matte lipstick: Although liquid matte lipsticks are known for drying our lips, I believe that I'm in love with them. They don't require any touch ups and make me look fresh!

Highlighter: I use the Becca cosmetics Jaclyn Hill Champagne Face Palette! It's a wonder kit with three blushes and two highlighters. It's a limited edition palette and I'm afraid how I'll survive once this one finishes.

When did you start with Whimsical Parties?

I used to host parties for my daughters. That's when everyone noticed I had a flare for it. Friends and family encouraged and I found a profession that's a passion for me.

What's the best part of being your own boss?

It's very stressful to be your own boss. Being a perfectionist and a workaholic, I work endlessly. The best part of this job is when we have happy clients.

It's feels amazing to creat events which leave happy memories for our clients .

What's the hardest part of your job?

Hardest part is to work all night to make events possible for our clients. I find it very hard to manage time with my kids. Keeping the balance is the most difficult part!

How do you manage work and family?

Managing family and work is the hardest. I try to keep a balance by keeping my girls at my office while I'm working. I have created a play area for them there. Most of the time I take them along to my events aswell!

What was your favourite project so far?

My favourite project was to work for the recent Mogul wedding. We created a signature ceiling for them which is my personal favourite.

Your experience in Thailand for DWP (Destination wedding planners congress)?

DWP was very enriching. Meeting the best in the industry and sharing ideas with them opened new horizons for me. Expanding to international grounds is an exciting experience.

What's next for Whimsical Parties?

We are planning to start another sister company named Think & co. It will cater to ready to pick stuff for DIY event. I feel there is a niche for these DIY products in Pakistan.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles!

Where did you choose to go and why?

I chose to go to Hunza, Fairy meadows and Khunjarab pass.

I have travelled all over the world but never really got a chance to explore Pakistan , that’s why I decided to visit the northern areas of Pakistan.

Who did you travel with?

I went with a friend and we decided to join a group called STAR ADVENTURE CLUB which was a very good decision as we not only got to see Pakistan but we also got a chance to mix around with people!

Where did you stay?

We stayed two nights in Chilas, two nights in fairy meadows and two nights in Hunza.

What are the best shopping spots there?

The best shopping spots are the local bazaars especially if you are in Hunza you should get your hands on the local gems, carpets and shawls available in Karimabad. Moreover , Hunza has a lot of fruit trees like cherries, apricots, apples & mulberries. One must get their hands on their locals products like apricot oil and cherry jams.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there?

Since we were in the exploring mode, we wanted to try the local cuisines . We tried the Shabshoro in Hunza which is a local dish (a mix between calzone stuffed with minced beef and a keema wala nan). It's baked on a huge circular

What can you do over there to relax and unwind?

You should go on walks and breathe in the pollution free air. All these spots having walking trails and after every few minutes there's a post card worthy view. This is the perfect opportunity to do yoga at dawn. If there's one thing lacking in these areas, I think that's a good spa!

Finally, any tips?

Your packing for the trip is very essential. I had packed everything from a first aid box to toilet cleaning liquids.,You must have sunscreen, chapstick and wet wipes. You should travel light! Invest in good outdoor waterproof shoes and a raincoat and wear comfortable clothing! If you really want to enjoy the hikes, prepare your body in advance. Join a gym!

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on?

Chilas - fort and Indus below the city for ancient stone/polygraphs.In Fairy meadows some of the best points are Tarar lake, shadow lake, phantoora lake , beyal camp , view point1.

In Hunza you must go to the Hunza bazar, altit fort and Baltit fort. There is one small village, Duikar, some 15-20 mints away from hunza, up on the mountains, the place to visit in Duikar is Eagle's Nest Hotel... U MUST go to this place, u wont find any otherplace like that anywhere.

On the Way to khunjraab pass u must stop at the attabad lake ( a must see) , khunjrab pass itself is a snow clad area and a must see place.

Suggest places for a perfect night out?

The perfect night out for me would be star gazing at fairy Meadows. The higher you get ,the more sensational the views. It's where the sky meets the earth. The bright sparkling stars against a jet black background of the sky and the illuminated milky way, the scent of the Alpine forests suffusing into the air. As I lay there amazed breathing in nature, I thought this is the most peaceful night out one can ask for.

Another dish that I fell in love with is mamtoo which is like a beef mince steamed ravioli or a dumpling, it's served with some flavorful sauces. Cafe de Hunza is a must try too, located in Karimabad Bazar. The dishes on the menu are inspired by cuisines all over the world n fused with local ingredients, I was in culinary heaven. The best experience for me was to be able to pick and eat ripe fruit from the trees directly. The cherries and apricots are the most juiciest I've ever seen!

We're looking forward to the “ISL Artists in Residence” Program by International Steels Limited (ISL), which brings together some of Pakistani’s most talented emerging artists. The ISL Art Residency will house artists Aamir Habib, Ahsan Dada, Fahim Rao, Mahbub Jokhio, Safdar Ali and Yasser Vayani. Each artist will be developing pieces of art utilizing the various materials provided to them by International Steels Limited (ISL). The program will be mentored by acclaimed Pakistani artists - Amin Gulgee, Asma Mundrawala and Munawar Ali Syed.
