ABOUT ME:
EMAAN SHAIKH What advice would you give to a younger you? Push yourself. And gain more confidence
Three things you cannot live without: My hand cream, spicy food and the mountains
What is a superpower you wish you had? I wish I had the power to control weather and make it cold whenever I wanted!
What first drew you to the arts? I used to watch my Grandmother paint these exquisite strokes on fabric, the control of her hand with the brush flowing through the cloth with such finesse is what first drew me towards the arts. I always wanted to achieve that power in my hands. The way she created images of nature composing them so as they always belonged there. What is your background in the arts? Art and Design was the subject I gave most of my attention to in O levels and A levels. After which I took admission in Nca. I graduated from the National College Of Arts in Lahore two and a half years ago with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art. Where do you derive your inspiration? The north of Pakistan has always been a vital source of inspiration for my work so far but to be specific its more about the fascination I have for the Earth’s natural elements and phenomena’s that drive me towards creating work. Are they any particular art movements that inspire you? A movement that swept Italy in the 1960’s called “ Art Povera,” in which artists used found objects or worthless materials in their work influenced my work the most. Gui-

seppe Penone one of the leading artists from this movement is my ‘go to’ artist as well. Can you walk us through the process of developing your work? The process of my practice consists of deconstructing images and visuals I observe to create my own compositions. What begins with observation goes on to becoming more imaginative as well! I develop my work by breaking down images and visuals and slowly building them up again. Does art have a calming or exciting effect on your being? It depends, Most of my pieces are very meditative with a lot of repetition in the composition, that particular work becomes more calm during the process. Would you say you are an avid reader? Does reading play a role in your creative process? I am not an avid reader, but I enjoy reading books related to world history once in a while. Reading has not yet played a vital role in my work but it might very soon with a new project I am planning. Who would you say is your mentor? My grandmother has always been a mentor for me, advising me and critiquing me ever since she taught me how to make my first watercolour painting. Tell us about your favorite piece. It keeps changing actually. Right now I would say it is this piece that I am still working on, it’s actually a 2-D representation of the grains of a stone. I have tried to capture the visual of the grains of a stone when broken down. A stone found beneath the surface is like a storyteller. With its marks, colors, shapes and textures. What has been the proudest and most fulfilling moment in your career so far? I have two most proudest moments: I was given a grant to work in a remote area on the west coast of Norway for three months on my practice. I was given the pleasure to work on a project at the Shahi Hamam (world heritage site) restoring and conserving the original frescos and murals, for eight months under the Aga Khan Foundation. Do your fashion choices take influence from the art you create? Do you see a similar vein run through both. Sometimes. My obsession with natural elements in my work does sometimes affect what I buy or wear. It is said that great art comes from terribly sensitive souls. Would you agree or disagree to the statement? I am extremely sensitive, being a cancerian, as well. Whether it is an ad on tv or something I see passing by on the road. Anything and everything can affect me bringing me to tears. However I do disagree with this statement as I feel the less sensitive one is the more expressive they could be through their art. If you could go back in time and have dinner with one person in history who would it be? It would definitely be William Wordsworth, my favourite poet Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for? Yes there are. But in their initial stages so I cant say much! You will have to wait and see 2016

1. even though I might be a very socialable person with many acquaintances, Shumz is the one real friend who I can count on in any moment of need 2. sometimes, I feel that Shumz is telepathic because she can read my mind even before the words pop out. In a group, we just exchange a glance and know exactly what the other is thinking; haha!! 3. be it gossip, secrets, fears or deep thoughts, Shumz will always lend an ear…whether it is first thing before going to work or over a late night cuppa. After a giggle, I know that she would give me the best advice 4. let me tell you that despite not being that much into Bollywood and down beat desi tunes, my crazy friend is ever willing to join me 5. she can make me laugh with the most absurd jokes or just by her sheer hyperness – she’s ready to ‘take off’ all the time!

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you go and Why? Our country is blessed with so many beautiful sights and nothing like going to the north in summer. Travelling is always something which is a source of getting inspired and learning. I went to Shogran, Naran and Kaghan with my official trip as a part of yearly retreat. It was a great getaway to escape the heat of Lahore in June for a few days. We explored Shogran, Siri Paye, Bubusar Top and Lulusar Lake. The scenic beauty of these places surrounded by waterfalls, lakes and lush green valleys is breath taking. Whom did you travel with? I travelled with my colleagues from Lotus PR as the trip was a part of the team building exercise. Everyone was a fun

company to travel with! Where did you stay? We stayed in Arcadian Shogran which is a lovely cottage surrounded by dense green pine forests with breathtaking views of the peaks of Malika Parbat. The place has very nice facilities, hospitable staff and a diverse food menu which is rare to find in Northern Areas. What are the best shopping spots there? No place in particular but you will find a lot of handcrafts and locally made stuff around which speaks of craftsmanship at its best.

travel diaries Finally, any tips. The weather is generally very pleasant in Naran and Kaghan but the sun is also very strong. Don’t forget to keep your sun block and a pair of sun glasses or aviators. If you love photography you must have a dslr. Wear comfortable pair of shoes and a nice reasonable messenger bag helps to keep all the essentials. Lastly keep the first aid box with you in case of any emergency.
travel diaries
Tell us about sights no one should miss on. Siri Paye which is almost 50 minutes drive from Shogran is the most beautiful place to experience nature. The way from Shogran to Kaghan and Naran leaves you enchanted. Babusar Top has one of the most amazing views and Lulusar Lake which is extended over 3 kms with its spectacular beauty and aqua blue and marine colored water is a sight not to be missed.
If you want to shop antiques and handicrafts you find many spots! A good playlist on your ipad!

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Arcadian itself has really good food menu! If you want to try then street food including chappal kebabs on the way to Kaghan and Naran valley are amazing.
Suggest places for a perfect night out We went to a small market in Shogran which was close to our hotel. It had the perfect tea one could ask for.

At the beginning of the week you're like a plant just barely breaking the surface of the ground. The world is heavy. The sun is distant. What with everything on your mind, expect to be unusually introverted. By Wednesday, you'll be sprouting huge leaves and growing in unforeseen directions. A new friend comes into your life on Thursday -- a cute flower, perhaps? On Friday, when a ray of light lands directly on you, make sure you're looking your best. It's an exciting weekend for you, but try to stay grounded on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, go wild.
It's no wonder that your emotions are all over the map right now. The holidays tend to bring out the weirdest in people. Anything that happens Monday or Tuesday can be safely written off -- moodiness and sensitivity levels are off the charts. Wednesday and Thursday are more even-keeled days, but money issues figure prominently. (If someone presents you with a grand moneymaking scheme, don't opt in.) You won't really feel like yourself until Friday or Saturday. The weekend holds good things for you.
You are thinking like a scientist at the start of the week, and your interest in your own emotions is almost clinical. You're in a logical, observational mode; but, as you know, some things simply can't be calculated. This is loud and clear on Wednesday and Thursday especially, when you find yourself getting along remarkably well with people you hardly know. Chalk it up to chemistry. Friday your relations with others are less smooth -- for reasons not entirely clear -- but a great conversation on Sunday sets you on a good course for the week ahead.
If someone asks you what your favorite kind of pie is on Monday or Tuesday, you won't be able to answer. You like the texture of apple but the flavor of pumpkin. Or whatever. Every decision -- even a minor one -- this week expands into a complex set of irreconcilable variables. Midweek has you feeling torn about bigger issues than pie preference. Come Friday, you may feel more like hanging out around the house with a remote control (or a book) in your hand than anything else. This weekend, you will be happy with a minimum of fanfare.

The easy answer isn't interesting to you right now. You'd like to know what's really going on. On Monday and Tuesday you're in detective mode -- asking penetrating questions, considering every angle. And on Wednesday, buoyed by all your research, you charge into the world with fresh insights and confidence; no mincing words for you. Thursday is a big day romance-wise, and on Friday your ego is front and center. Try as you might to deflect attention on Saturday, all eyes are on you. Don't let a personality clash with someone else ruin your day. Be optimistic and forgiving.
Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it's also the heart of discovery. You are nothing if not curious at the start of the week, and your analytical powers have never been stronger. Your restlessness right now is incredibly useful. Communicate what you're thinking. On Wednesday and Thursday you'd like to be climbing mountains or testing theorems, but your family has other things in mind. Don't distress, because you'll have plenty of personal time on Friday and Saturday. (Although your love life might pull you in other directions.) Sunday is a day for relaxation.
This week, all you can think about is money. Obviously you're thinking about more than money per se -- when you get right down to it, you're thinking about the future -- but the value of material possessions and striking a balance between generosity and stinginess are very much on your mind. The middle of the week relieves you from this line of thinking by way of a purely fun excursion with a couple of your friends. In the days leading up to Sunday, chances are good that your mind will go to thoughts of the past. But Sunday, once again, your mind's on the future.
On Monday you're already feeling like a new you. You go into the week stronger (and more respected) than you've felt in a while. The confidence suits you. Your mind is open to anything, but it might be too open on Wednesday and Thursday when you may find yourself caught up in a crowd mentality, being persuaded to do things you wouldn't normally do. Friday returns you to a high sense of order and self-control. That's all well and good, but don't forget to party Saturday night.
sagittarius capricorn 23November/21December
22December/20January

Your life is a movie at the outset of the week, but you can't quite follow the dialogue and the car chases make no sense. And who's the hero in this flick anyway? If you feel like canceling dinner plans and kicking back in front of the TV, hey, by all means. By Wednesday and Thursday your social calendar's too packed for TV time, and on Friday and Saturday music and art figure strongly. If someone asks you about your life goals, don't roll your eyes; a goal or two never hurt anyone. On Sunday, someone else may announce a resolution so brilliant you add it to your own list.
Monday and Tuesday are great days for decision-making, but don't go on your gut alone. You have a wealth of information to work with. Look at the details. Organize yourself. Wednesday and Thursday, when your plans go into effect, you may feel hesitant or awkward or pessimistic or crazy -- you'll be bouncing all over the place emotionally, but stay the course. By Friday you'll already be reaping the rewards of a path well chosen. People will be complimenting you right and left this weekend. The more modest you are, the more impressive you will be.
Slowness is a virtue at the start of the week -- it encourages thoughtfulness, and the more thoughtful you are, the more emotionally exposed you feel. But rest assured that no one but you can tell what's going on deep in your brain. Wednesday and Thursday will be relatively social days, although you won't be surrounded by strangers, you'll be surrounded by people you love and trust. Friday is a big day at work and on Saturday you have chores to do around the house. But Sunday will be the best day you've had in ages.
There are things you're willing to live with and things you just aren't. On Monday, you may have to draw a line in the sand. Others may react in funny ways, but your good friends will stand by your side. Tuesday will be an emotionally rocky day -- after putting your foot down, you may feel pangs of regret (they'll pass) -- but Wednesday is a lucky day for you, as is Thursday. Friday and Saturday you're happiest sharing your good luck with others. This leads to a realization this weekend: You want to do something with your life that helps lots of people. You have big dreams.
