In the Spotlight Arsalan Iqbal talks to Paperazzi!

What do you value most in your friends? Honest and trust comes automatically! Who are your fashion influences and inspirations? I’ve always admired Valentino Garavani and Karl Lagerfeld. They are truly inspiring. They are examples of designers always doing what they wanted to do. They’ve never had a God complex as many people do once they attain fame. How would you define your personal style? My personal style has changed a bit since I began designing professionally three years ago. Back then, it was all about wearing a T- shirt jeans and a well fitted jacket. Now I usually attend events and meetings in a formal shirt, trousers and a blazer. What’s the best thing anyone has ever said about your work? Compliments mean the most when they come from honest friends and loved ones. The Best were ; “It’s beautiful’, “inspiring’ and ‘unparalleled’. What is your biggest strength as a designer? I believe my strength lies in my vision on how to set a trend; forecasting a trend before it becomes on – trend and the structuring of silhouettes.

What is your greatest fear? I keep reminding myself where I’m from what I want to do and accomplish. This humility and yearning to achieve allows me to remain just who I am so there’s never any fear.. What’s something very few people know about you? Very few people know me intimately, I would like to keep it that way. What do you like to do for fun? I find solace and salvation in making clothes and that is fun for me. What do you wish you had more time for? My family! What’s your favourite holiday spot? Koh Samui! It’s a small island about 50 KM in size with a small population that is awesomely cool to get away to for a few days! Who is your favourite hero in fiction? Marlon Brando as Stanley in 'A Streetcar named Desire’ and Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump in ‘Forrest Gump’.

How would you define the fashion scene in Pakistan? Most people see the industry improving but as time has passed, we’ve become monotonous. We are taking fashion seriously. We are too inspired by western designers and image they emit. We get so inspired that we alter our strength and ethos. The outfits we make should depict who we are, what we think and what we visualize. The fashion scene in Pakistan will not improve until the international scene but using our own unique strengths, it’s time for our talent to inspire international designers.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Become more patient

How would you describe your childhood? My childhood was not so good. I was a lonely child but was inspired by art and actors. I used to note down separates and imagine how I would style the actors. Nevertheless I enjoyed what I still continue to do as an adult.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? None as yet. I set my goals and bar for achievement quite high. But the time to strive and get there is now!

Who is your go to person for uncontrollable laughing fits? My wife Sarah! What’s your favourite TV show? Actually it keep changing, these days its “Sherlock” on BBC One. I’m looking forward to the new season this year!

Where would you like to be in five years? Where no one has imagined a Pakistani designer could ever be! 2014

purposes. In 2 hours we went from Boating Basin (which actually was exactly that, I was told) through Zainab Market, down MA Jinnah Road (Bandar Road) towards Netty Jetty bridge and back through Mai Kolachi (which apparently had pink flamingoes visit the mangroves every year).

Karachiwaley Adnan Malik The way I’ve been told about it, the Karachi of the past was an impossibly sexy city. Sure, I’ve heard about the city in language laced with nostalgia, hyperbole and affection, but this ‘Beirut of the East’ (which was in turn the Paris of the middle east) clearly had inimitable spirit, lush diversity and a swinging nightlife. I’ve heard mythical stories of Anna the cabaret girl, Wahid Murad’s debauched parties at 007, late night trysts at Midway house, the Pan-am airhostesses sunbathing in boats off Kemari, the quaint tramways and endless Saddar-wide celebrations of Diwali, Christmas, Nauroz, and Eid all in the span of a few weeks. I couldn’t believe that this dusty, over-populated, ill-managed part of town, which I now always try and avoid, was the heart of this pulsing city. In fact, I couldn’t believe that this hemorrhaging city even had a heart, what with all the sectarian violence, political instability, violence, street crime and mismanagement. So my initial introduction into Karachi’s mythical past was when I went on an early morning weekend bicycle tour of Saddar with Critical Mass a couple of years ago. A dozen of us weaved through the empty roads of Saddar on a gentle autumn morning, stopping at churches, temples, schools and other buildings that had communal 50

Rehashing a similar itinerary last weekend with ‘The Karachiwala’, urban explorer and documenter, Farooq Soomro, who runs a blog (thekarachiwala.com), we decided to venture beyond our comfort zones into the “other side of the bridge” to try and reimagine this fabled city of the past. My friend and Guardian correspondent, Jon Boone, was the guiding force behind this trip. After having heard about the Karachiwala in a casual dinner conversation he decided to write an article on him, and I was asked to come along and document it visually. Besides discovering the absolute hidden grandeur of St. Anthony’s church (which had me at ‘hello’), the now covert Theological Society, where up until a few years ago there used to be conferences on comparative religions and the queer structure of the Merewether tower with motifs of the star of David, the place that really stood out for me was the Wazir Mansion, which was home to a young Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The Wazir mansion is a humble corner building in dangerous Kharadar that borders ‘gangland’ Lyari. In our caravan of cars followed by a police escort van (we did have ‘goras’ with us after all), we snaked our way through a thin, congested lane and arrived at an innocuous corner building. After an introductory briefing by Farooq, the ten of us entered into a dark, dusty library room. The electricity had gone and the museum keepers were very surprised to have guests like us just show up. Yaqub, the very kind, well informed and opinionated caretaker of the building gave us a tour. We saw the room in which Jinnah was raised as a young boy, his library of legal books that had been sent back here and a room full of his personal items, such as a monogrammed shoe bag and stationary (‘MAJ’ they said confidently.) Though not maintained in a manner befitting the ‘father of our country’, the museum was charming in a rugged and humble manner. And it was heartening to see Yaqub’s passion for Pakistan and his take on Jinnah’s vision for it. A liberal thinker in the mold of Jinnah who is the caretaker for Jinnah’s childhood home, there’s a story in that somewhere, I remember discussing with Imran Yousaf, a playwright and fellow urban explorer. As someone with a discerning eye for aesthetic order, I have found it very challenging to engage with the urban experience of Karachi. Although the city resonates at a frequency that pulses through you and keeps you on your toes, its outer veneer leaves a lot to be desired. But through this exploration I found that if you dig a little, wipe the dust and blood off its façade, its possible to find small pockets of enchantment in this city. If you can snap out of the grind for a few hours and potter around Saddar, a very different national narrative will reveal itself to you in the hidden details. Details that still exist behind security barriers, large walls, smog and a pretence of homogeneity.

This week may not be your ideal week Aries. You may even spend most of it grumpy and in bed being as anti social as ever. Your partner has also grown some distance with you and your expenditure is also adding extra stress to your mind. It may seem impossible but all this will get fixed in time. Get ready to see some changes soon. Some travel within the country is due this week. for good luck: wear red coral

You can smell something funny in the air but unfortunately it is not love. It’s not one of those lovey dovey weeks you have been having lately so it is time to get a little more serious in life. Some documentation will work out in your favour. You are also coming in to a little bit of money but you will end up spending it all. This week will be a very unemotional one. for good luck: wear opal

This week it is advised that you spend most of your time paying particular attention to your health and diet. Get all your medical checks done and find out what is the reason for you always feeling so weary. Some women in your life are reaching out to you and they want to give you emotional support. You may also experience some leg pulling by friends and cousins but you should take it lightly. This week make decisions from your heart. for good luck: wear aquamarine
