UP, CLOSE & PERSONAL
You recently got married; could you tell us a little about how you both met? Like everything else in my life, it was completely unexpected and sudden. I think this is how life rewards you when you go with the flow. I had been getting a lot of these questions about marriage and commitment since I started my singing career, but never gave it any serious thought. I’ve always been a big believer in things happening when you allow them to happen. My husband and I were friends initially, and before we knew it, we decided that we wanted to have a committed relationship and be together. It all happened in the course of a few weeks. Sandaraa recently released a new track, what do you have planned with your band in the new year? I’m very excited about Sandaraa this year because we just released our first-ever musical composition in Urdu, Farz Karo, by the great Urdu poet, Ibn-e-Insha. For the past few years Sandaraa has been doing a lot of work around folk music (Dari, Pashto, Saraiki, Punjabi folk) where we tried to understand how the rhythms work. After which the next step for us was to see if we could try and create something together as a band. So when Michael Winograd [a clarinet maestro and also part of the band] got us a grant by Chamber Music America’s Classical Commissioning Program, we

decided to cover the works of Urdu poetry in our songs. There’s so much beautiful poetry in the subcontinent that one can gain inspiration from and learn from as a musician. We have some really exciting things happening for Sandaraa this year which I’ll have to stay mum about for the moment! Lipstick Under My Burkha has wowed film critics and received immense praise overseas - what was it like, donning the hat of the film's sole Music Director? It was beyond anything I have ever dreamt of. Not only because I got the honour of being the sole music director of an entire film for the first time in my life; but also because of the team of amazing women that I worked with. Even though I’ve done projects in Mumbai before over the years, there was something very special about this project. Work felt like one big party. We’d listen to music together, share ideas…it all happened so quickly because we were all on the same page about our creative choices and about our intentions for the project. It was refreshing too, because in an extremely hyper and commercialized space such as Mumbai, one finds that everyone is under a certain level of stress (where you feel like you have to make sure the audience will accept and like your project), but it never felt that way during this project. At a professional level, it gave me immense responsibility and space; it was a steep learning curve. What's your work process like? It has evolved a lot over the years, but it also depends on the kind of project I’m engaged in. The most important thing for me has been when I’m just not worrying about anything, when I have nothing else on my mind and I’m able to be completely present in the moment. That’s when my best ideas will come to me. You recently stated that your main aim is to highlight good music from Pakistan; an example being your efforts with Ali Sethi in putting your ustaad,
Naseeruddin Saami, and the American music producer, Ian Brennan, together for a collaboration. Please comment… When I first got into this industry with Haniya, I remember how much trouble we got into; we signed a contract with a record label who then misappropriated the contract and were very aggressive with us. They actually stopped us from getting awards. We were so shocked by how exploitative the industry was and when we tried to get some kind of guidance from our peers, there was nothing. People just told us to suck it up and deal with it. As time went on, I realized there’s some-
incredible masters around us. One of them is our ustaad – Naseeruddin Saami - who is a master musician. The only one of his ilk, the only source of his gharana, Khayal (an 850-year-old tradition), who practices the art form in its original form. So after knocking on a few doors of corporates, our peers and the development sector (no one was interested), we decided to do our own thing, and this year, thanks to Ali Sethi, we got Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami to collaborate with a Grammy-winning music producer from the US who flew down to Karachi to record an album. This is just the beginning! In an interview last year, you stated: "I refuse to bow down to how the industry wants to craft me as a woman." Since your foray into the music business, it must have been incredibly difficult to go against the grain... It has. The market dynamics of the media industry all over the world are such that there are certain rules by which womanhood, femininity and beauty are viewed, and there are certain standards that if you don’t subscribe to them, you’re not always rewarded and are sometimes sidelined.
thing that we’ve inherently lost over the past 20-25 years in Pakistan. And that is the reason why it has become so commercialized, because we’ve stopped engaging with the community of our traditional musicians. This wasn’t the case in the past where lots of great musicians were given centre stage and that respect. But their mastership is being dimmed under the fog of celebrity and marketability. Therefore Ali Sethi and myself (and a few friends in Karachi), thought about how we could create more awareness of the
That for me was a really big challenge because I used to feel there was so much pressure; infact once I remember the first time I was interviewed with Haniya on a news channel and a girl sitting next to me said; ‘Oh how cute, girls with guitars and shallus.’ I found it so strange for an educated person to say something like that. That’s when Haniya and I decided that you know what, we’re going to BE the girls in the shallus and we are going to show that it doesn’t matter! One should be allowed to don any image that they want, but currently its one big, commercialized sameness; women seem to be losing their personalities and looking more like each other. But that’s what’s being rewarded. It’s been difficult but look, I’m still here, I do the work, I’m getting some of the biggest projects and it has worked for me. I’m very humble and thankful for doing whatever I have done without straying away from who I was.

Who is your best friend? I am very close to Zara Iqbal. We went to the same university and have been working at the same company (MINT PR) for a year now. What would you grab if your house was on fire? My phone, for sure. What is your destination for the trip of your dreams? Greece - Also I’d like to go alone whenever I go. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up? And do you still want it? I always wanted to be a doctor and even made it to medical school but wasn’t happy there with all the academic pressure so I left and opted for journalism. If you got stuck in the elevator and was forced to listen to only one song, which would it be? Eye to eye by Tahir Shah. What is the best advice anyone has ever given you? My uncle told me: ‘Be nice to people on your way up because you will meet them on your way down.’ I believe time does not remain the same and this quote teaches a life lesson!

birthdays Aquarius can be defined as introspective, cooperative, extremely mentally active and unconventional. They are caring free thinkers with great supervisory skills. They enjoy having to fight for a cause and having close mates around. They hate boring settings and being disconcerted by other people. The best setting for those born under this sign brings together mates and new adventures.
Our fab astrologer Zahid Haider, styles up your stars. Find out what’s in store for you this week!
ARIES With four planets now in your spiritual sector, this is the time of year when the cosmos encourages you to kick back and take time out for yourself. You might find that you’re more deeply connected with your feelings, particularly those that have been bubbling beneath the surface for a while. Dreams could also be important and may even contain valuable guidance. The weekend could see you assessing your beliefs and perhaps considering using the services of a life coach to help you live to your fullest potential.
TAURAS Feisty Mars continues its journey through your sector of change and transformation, and this could stir up issues that may have been holding you back. Taking the time to process through these could be very helpful in clearing away blockages and allowing you to be more productive. A powerful focus on your social sector hints that your friendships and love life could sparkle. However, as chatty Mercury aligns with ethereal Neptune over the weekend, it would be wise to remember that all that glitters isn’t necessarily gold.

As lovely Venus combines with nebulous Neptune midweek in your career sector, it might be just as well to firm up your boundaries. This blend of energies could see you giving away too much in terms of time, money, or other resources. Thankfully, chatty Mercury and its tie with sobering Saturn can encourage a more realistic perspective, enabling you to do whatever is in your best interests. Over the weekend, an encounter suggests you may be eager to get to know someone better even if their ideas differ from yours.
CANCER There is a powerful focus on your sector of far horizons and travel this week, which could see you indulging in escapist tendencies. However, romantic options show up, too, suggesting that if you’re traveling you could meet someone special and form a close romantic bond. There’s also an emphasis on study and self-improvement. Indeed, as both inquisitive Mercury and the sun align with cautious Saturn over this week, a desire to study could lead to promising opportunities in the future.

The idea of change could appeal to you, but nothing will happen unless you do something about it. With a major focus on a sensitive area of your chart, you might connect with feelings that have been buried for some time, and this can encourage you to process through them. Don’t be in too much of a hurry, though, as a gentle approach may work best. On another note, with lovely Venus angling toward feisty Mars, a desire to hasten a romantic relationship may not be helpful. It might be better to go with the flow.
other people could have a very strong influence on your life at this time, and this might be due to having four planets in your sector of relating. There are times over this week when you may find it difficult to understand others’ motives. If so, chatty Mercury’s tie with sobering Saturn encourages you to ask for clarification. It may help them to define what they want, and it will certainly help you. You may not see eye to eye with a family member over the weekend, but a compromise is possible.
The temptation could be to give until you feel overwhelmed. The focus on the sign of Pisces and your sector of work and service suggests that you feel it’s your duty to help others regardless of your own needs. This isn’t sustainable. And with both lively Mercury and the sun aligning with cautious Saturn this week, the cosmos is encouraging you to set healthier boundaries. You’ll have to give back to yourself at some point, and this might be the time to do so.
Your sector of leisure and romance sparkles this week, with a full lineup encouraging you to indulge in your favorite hobbies or spend time with that special person. And with lovely Venus linking to dreamy Neptune midweek, this can be the perfect opportunity for a special date. However, a quarter moon in Gemini on Friday could encourage you to celebrate the first milestone of a new relationship, perhaps by taking things further. Trust your instincts. If it feels right, seriously consider it.

A very homey focus could see you stepping back from life and viewing it from a fresh perspective. With a major focus on your family zone, the cosmos is encouraging you to take the time to nurture yourself with good food, plenty of sleep, and a chance to completely unwind. Although you might have a busy life, scheduling such activities into your week can help you feel refreshed and be more productive. The weekend could bring a difference of opinion, but you admire people who remain true to themselves.
Communication can be the key to success this week, although clarity is essential, too. If someone has something important to tell you, you might need to read between the lines to understand what’s really being said. However, with sobering Saturn involved in the mix, you could find that understanding begins to dawn, especially if you ask the right questions. With lovely Venus aligning with feisty Mars, you might be drawn to someone you sense is on the same wavelength even if it isn’t obvious.
Although the focus is on money matters, the emphasis is also on the sign of Pisces, which suggests that spiritual values could play a part in your finances. This week, the cosmos encourages you to draw a line, because there could be a tendency to be a little bit too generous to various charities. Consider whether you can afford it, and if not, you might have to change your approach. The sun’s link with cautious Saturn may help you find a way to give without depleting your resources
You’ll be truly in your element this week with the sun, chatty Mercury, lovely Venus, and ethereal Neptune all in your sign. Your imagination could be very much to the fore, and this can be excellent for creative activities and romance as well. However, with ties to cautious Saturn, the cosmos is encouraging you to think about the practicalities of a project or new relationship. If it fits harmoniously into your life, it could turn out very well for you.
