i n th e s p o tl i g h t What is Kayseria Vision all about? The Kayseria Vision is to provide intellectual and monetary patronage to the traditional arts. The Master's Collection is part of this vision. We have made links with traditional artists all over Pakistan and also with like-minded institutions like Daachi, Hastoneest and others. We hope to make an effort to build greater cultural awareness for a more confident celebration of being South Asian. Why do you think it is important to keep older traditions alive in the modern world? Traditions bring wisdom with them. We have become obsessed with material progress in the last 200 years while shedding the responsibilities that all the traditions taught us. In a traditional world man lives in harmony with nature and above all his own true nature which proceeds from the Divine and returns to It. The concept of wearable art is quite prevalent in the fashion world; how is the Kayseria Master’s Collection different? Kayseria has come with a broader and more 'original' perception of art. In a traditional sense 'original' is that which is closer to the 'Origin' and not necessarily that which is 'innovative'. We do not adhere to the post-industrial revolution European schism between art and craft. Traditional art is not fundamentally based on individual expression rather it transcends the individual through its universal message. What is the design philosophy of this particular collection? It is a 're-membrance' of that which has been 'dis-membered'. It is a higher realisation of our own identity. 68

wa l e e d zaman

What lawn trend do you see dying this year? The obsession with overloading a design. Less is at times more. 'Lawn Fashion' also has its days numbered. How can lawn be made more innovative? What will eventually burst the lawn bubble is that people will realise that lawn is not an aspect of fashion; it adheres to the age old art of dress. The difference between 'Fashion' and the art of 'dress' is that the former is based in change whereas the latter transcends time. How did you come to know about Ustaad Saif? Through the Sarah Zaman residence project which was finished in 2005. This house saw the very hard work of three main people, Kamil Khan Mumtaz, Muhammed Arshad and Sarah Zaman, respectively the architect, contractor and client. This house started a great intellectual revival of traditional art and a celebration of it like never before. Through this project and my parents’ direction I was introduced to Ustaad Saif amongst other great luminaries. What was the most memorable experience while working with Ustaad Saif? Making the Kayseria Vision store with him. He is a most humble man. It is a joy to see him at the design studio every day. At times I have to pinch myself to believe he is actually there.

What are your plans for continuing the Master’s Collection capsule series? We will continue to evolve the Ustad Saif-ur-Rahman collection every season. We will also be collaborating with more masters and are excited about those projects too! How do you choose whom to pay tribute to with the Master’s Collection? What is the design process behind that? The 'Master's Collection' takes on the traditional perception of being a true master. A true master is one who through years of toil and hardwork, focus, conviction and concentration develops a higher level of self-realisation which shows through their mastery of their art and skill and also through their equally balanced character. Tell us a bit about your background. What made you want to become a fashion designer? I am more of a traditional artist than a fashion designer. As a traditional artist I engage with the art of dress. All the traditional arts are linked by One Origin and that is what makes them universally beautiful. What is the best part of being a fashion designer? The best part is that I have the liberty to engage with all other art forms. In print design you can incorporate visual art. In designing our Vision Store at H Block Defence, Lahore, it was amazing to celebrate traditional architecture along with Ustaad Saif and our interior architecture team. How has your design philosophy changed since the inception of your brand? It has become more focused. We are 'contemporary traditional' and in this contemporary practice of traditional design we hope to celebrate the essence of the sub-continent; that naturally transcends national boundaries. How do you see the fashion industry developing in Pakistan? Haphazardly. It needs to appreciate a more in depth cultural analysis as opposed to having a superficially eastern identity while being inwardly Eurocentric. 2015

Describe the first time you met. Ayesha: Umair brought Sadaf to the house as they were both on their way to a wedding. Sadaf: Our actual formal meeting was when she came over with the proposal.

What did you wear to your first meeting? Ayesha: It was impromptu so I must have been in my regular shalwar kameez. Sadaf: Shalwar Kameez.

How would you describe her in 3 words? Ayesha: Perfect. Pretty. Petite. Sadaf: SUCH A SUPERWOMAN. Name one thing you would change about the other.

mo th er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

What’s the nicest thing she’s ever done for you? Ayesha: She’s always been there for me when I’ve needed her. And it’s often! Sadaf: The nicest thing she’s done and continues to do is take my side over Umairs (who is her favourite) no matter what, much to Umair’s frustration! How do you bond together? Ayesha: It’s a mutual understanding and respect. Sadaf: We hang out a lot.. She’s more like my buddy than a mother-in-law. What’s the secret to getting along with your Mother-inlaw/Daughter-in-law? Ayesha: Space and respect (and no uncalled for remarks!) Sadaf: I think the reason we get on so well is that we have never lived together!

moth er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

moth er ’ s day

mo th er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

What’s something you admire most about her? Ayesha: Her good manners and sense of responsibility are admirable. And of course, her tremendous self control in keeping herself in shape. Her children are a reflection of her good upbringing! She is a perfect bahu and mother. Sadaf: Her boundless energy, endless patience and her knack of smiling through any situation.

Ayesha: Her busy-ness. Sadaf: She needs to tone it down and relax.. She’s always on the move.

moth er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

What was your first impression of her? Ayesha: She was wearing a gharara but it seemed like they weren’t her own clothes. It didn’t quite suit her personality. My immediate impression was that she’s pretty, petite and has a very likeable personality. I don’t think Umair had yet mentioned that he was interested in marrying her. Sadaf: I thought she was brilliant because once the dates were decided she told my mum “Now Bina, It’s 6 months to the wedding and anything can happen so even if I’m in jail make sure you go ahead with the wedding.” Needless to say, Mummy nearly fell of her chair!

N id a B a n o Q u r e s h i & Aneela Shah Describe the first time you met. Aneela: The first time would have to be at Lahore Grammar School. She was my daughter Sana’s classmate. Nida Bano: I was still in school so it was a long time ago. I remember her being very friendly. What was your first impression of her? Aneela: I always thought of her as one of the good kids! I never felt the need for a deeper analysis.

mo th er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

Nida Bano: She was the cool mother. Both a friend and mother to her girls. What did you wear to your first meeting? Aneela: The first time we formally met was when we visited her family home. As it was early summer, I was wearing a chikankari kurta. Nida Bano: School uniform! But when I officially met her as Jarrar’s mother, I wore white chikankari.

What’s something you admire most about her? Aneela: Nida Bano is a very level-headed young woman. For her age she exudes remarkable confidence and maturity. She has fit right into our family! Nida Bano: She’s a strong, independent and extremely competent woman - a true role model. How would you describe her in 3 words? Aneela: An absolute gem. Nida Bano: Progressive, wise and caring.

moth er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

Name one thing you would change about the other. Aneela: I do not subscribe to the theory of changing people. Nida Bano: Nothing. Everything she is makes her who she is. She wouldn’t be the same Eela otherwise - what’s the fun in that? What’s the nicest thing she’s ever done for you? Aneela: On my 50th birthday which was right after her engagement, she took charge of putting together my favoutire music and helped my eldest daughter Khadijah with the arrangements! Like all my kids, she really makes me feel special and loved. Nida Bano: Raised her son the way she has! Nothing tops that.

What’s the secret to getting along with your Mother-in-law/Daughter-inlaw? Aneela: I think it is best to take the in-law bit out and become good friends. You should give each other space while being there for when you are needed. Nida Bano: Giving respect, space and love.

M in a m a l ik- h u s s a in & in d d u j a ir s a t is a h s f. pro Describe the first time you met. Mina: Technically I already had met her, briefly, at the Sirajuddin Poetry Competition. I competed for several years and finally won it. That year she had her hair cropped very short, dyed it white and was wearing a long green velvet dress and some kind of boot-like brown shoes. Our first proper, conversationand-all meeting was many years later, though, at her house for dinner. Shaista: She came over to my house for dinner.

mo th er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

What was your first impression of her? Mina: Vivid, and very complimentary. I thought she was amazingly cool. Shaista: Self possessed, courteous in the old fashioned way and extremely elegant. What did you wear to your first meeting? Mina: A black Indian block print kurta, since it was dinner.

Shaista: My habitual jeans, no doubt.

How would you describe her in 3 words? Mina: Witty, sensitive and unique. Shaista: Beautiful within and without. Name one thing you would change about the other. Mina: Nothing at all. Shaista: There is nothing I would change about her.

What’s the secret to getting along with your Mother-in-law/ Daughter-in-law? Mina: Treat her like you’d want your bhabi to treat your mother; be kind and have a sense of humour. And call her what your husband calls herit’s not just semantics. Shaista: Surely the above answers this question.

How do you bond together? Mina: We eat dinner and watch Eastenders, or drink coffee at the dining table and talk about books. We also shop, which is great because all the dukaandaars know Mummy and we get the royal treatment. Shaista: We give each other respect, space and understanding.

moth er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

What’s the nicest thing she’s ever done for you? Mina: Be-hisaab, really. Mummy is very thoughtful. But while Savail and I were still engaged, she gave me a hair ornament her mother used to wear. I was honoured and really moved because she didn’t know me that well at the time and yet had given me something so precious. I wore it a few times, anchored by a thousand bobby pins, and now have it safe in my locker for my second daughter, who is her greatgrandmother’s namesake. Shaista: Too many kindnesses making it impossible to squeeze into the one.

moth er ’ s day 2 0 1 5

What’s something you admire most about her? Mina: She is fierce. I love it. She lives her life entirely on her own terms, without apologizing for anything- not her jeans, her animals, that streak of red in her hair, nothing. She’s a punk, but an incredibly intelligent, funny and empathetic one. Shaista: Her dignity and pluck under pressure.

I used to look forward to her class and sit right in the front because I loved looking at how she was dressed, the way she carried herself and sang. I basically had a crush on her! Zehra: When you meet her for the first time, there's something very spiritual about her. It’s hard to put it in words! Anum: She was very sweet and more nervous than I was. What did you wear to your first meeting? Fatima: LGS's summer uniform. Zehra: I was wearing an olive green shalwar kameez. Anum: I had no idea I was meeting her. I had just gone to attend the CCP meeting and had heard they wanted lawyers for restoration of judiciary. I later found out that it was all planned. I was dressed casually in a pink Kurta and capris. Describe the first time you met. Meher Bano: My mother-in-law is my best friend Selina Rashid's mami. I first met her at her brother Hamid's wedding. Samir and I weren't seeing each other at the time so it was very casual and we got along! I took to calling her Nargis Mami which I still do - people find it quite odd. Nargis: At my nephew Hamid's wedding as she danced the night away! I met her as a potential daughter-in-law on Kings Road in London - mid tantrum over a pair of shoes she couldn't find in her size.

What did you wear to your first meeting? Meher Bano: I was wearing jeans and a sweater. Nargis: How in the world can I remember - it was over ten years ago.

The week begins with you getting even closer to achieving some important goals. You’re courageous and dynamic, now more than ever. Moreover, people are eager to help you along your way. The (minor) issues you might have this week are likely to pop up around Thursday or Friday; the key is to respond with an eye toward a solution instead of getting bent out of shape. And from later on Friday through the weekend, leave room for spontaneity -- you’ve got awesome spur-of-the-moment ideas now.

Why are you digging in your heels as the week begins? One of your ongoing challenges is to fight inflexibility and figure out others’ perspectives. Do it now, and you’re golden. Starting sometime Wednesday and lasting through sometime Friday, this kind of give-and-take comes much more naturally -- and can actually be a lot of fun. Engage the old sense of humor at work and at play for added good times. Then, on Friday night and over the weekend, talk it over (maybe with more than one person) before deciding.

Why are you digging in your heels as the week begins? One of your ongoing challenges is to fight inflexibility and figure out others’ perspectives. Do it now, and you’re golden. Engage the old sense of humor at work and at play for added good times. Then, on Friday night and over the weekend, talk it over (maybe with more than one person) before deciding.

It’s difficult to balance heart and mind, and you’ll certainly struggle with that a bit as the week begins. Sometimes you get carried away with the emotional side of things, and right now it’s particularly important to maintain perspective. Check with a friend if you’re feeling moody. Make plans for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday while you’re at it. These days find you steady and ready to explore, have fun and bond. This weekend, that good memory of yours is invaluable. What’s pertinent from the past in the present moment -- and for the future?

Your self-confidence is awesome (and hot) as the week begins, but it’s something to use, not abuse... especially now. Appreciate what’s great about others, too! But what’s not so great about them? Their tendency to overreact, particularly from Wednesday through the end of the workweek. Set a good example with your calm, positive, goodhumored approach (rather than freaking out!). Put a little learning on the agenda this weekend. Something (or someone?) new gets you fired up.

This week begins, if you can show the universe your willingness to make adjustments, experiment and have fun all the while, you’ll be justly rewarded. Then, from later on Wednesday and lasting through sometime Friday, the multitude of details, options and layers involved in a situation (or life in general) may boggle even detail-oriented you. One thing at a time -- and don’t forget to take a gander at the big picture, too. This weekend, a high-spirited conversation or debate could turn into an argument. Be ready to defuse it.

During the first few days of this week, the stars say you’ve got an amazing way with bonding both intellectually and emotionally (and even romantically!) right now -- so reach out! Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will likely bring miscellaneous disruptions and delays. Take it in stride, and be ready with a plan B (and maybe even a plan C). From Friday night through the weekend, don’t be shy about saying what you’re thinking. They can’t read your mind, after all.

On Monday and Tuesday, listening to what people are saying has never been more crucial, and a meeting of the minds -- and subsequent greatness -- is definitely possible now. Your possibilities are in a more personal and passionate area starting sometime Wednesday and lasting through Friday -- romance, that is! You’re hot, with a level of intrigue that few attain. But this weekend, interactions of all sorts (platonic, workrelated, random) may involve conflict. Be ready to resolve it.

sagittarius capricorn 23November/21December

22December/20January

You’re feeling highly creative as the week begins. Even ‘chance’ interactions can go great places now with the way you’re sharing your vision and drawing others out about theirs. On Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, ask yourself: What does this situation remind me of? The past comes into play in interesting ways, and if you’ve learned from it, you’re golden. And from Friday night through the weekend, love is in your personal stars. Familial, platonic, romantic -- it’s all good.

Keep your eyes open on Monday and Tuesday -- what’s going on around you? What could it mean for the future? Everything has a context, and the effects down the road are extremely important now. Take a look! Then, around Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, you’ve got special insight of another kind: Interpersonal. Very interesting! When the weekend comes, you’ll be able to have much more fun if you first get a little work done, whether around the house or job-related. Be responsible and enjoy yourself -- they’re not mutually exclusive.

Don’t worry about any bad hair days as the week begins: The stars are ratcheting up your attraction factor and general brilliance so much now, it doesn’t even matter whether your coiffure is cooperating. Enjoy! Then, around Thursday and Friday, do you put your own priorities first or make others (or a certain someone) your number-one? Hint: There’s a middle path here. From sometime on Friday through the weekend, get totally avant-garde. Whatever’s experimental, new and different has your name on it.

Don’t be so hard on yourself as the week begins. Give yourself a break, and respect your own individual style -- just because it’s not as straightforward as some doesn’t make it less great. And great you are -- in particular on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, when the stars highlight your creative, romantic and generally wonderful nature. Hot! If you’re confused about something this weekend, don’t overlook the effectiveness of just asking.
