What is your background in the arts? I graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Art, Distinction in Dissertation from the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in 2010. It was the greatest 4 years of my life. I came out with a strong studio practice, a theoretical base and friends for life. I learnt what passion meant along with discipline and hard work. Soon after graduation I moved to Dubai to work with the The Third Line gallery as Communications Manager. In 2013, I relocated to London and began work as Gallery Manager at Edge of Arabia. At the end of 2015 I took the plunge and launched Bahaar, an online sales platform for contemporary emerging art from South Asia and the Middle East. How confident are you about the ecommerce environment for being a promising outlet for artists to reach their audience? E-commerce has changed how hundreds of markets work and I do not expect art to be an outlier. It has dramatically grown the size and breadth of the potential customer base and enables smaller companies like Bahaar to enter the field faster. In addition to saving on high cost of retail floor space, it reduces the stress of staffing and holding expensive inventory. It also provides the option to offer 24 hour shopping at no additional cost. Bahaar aims to establish an accessible online market place for young collectors and emerging artists to suit the lives of millennials who require everything at their fingertips. Gone are the days of sales via art patrons, long-winded exhibition previews and shows. At Bahaar we pride ourselves in empowering the artist and encouraging the young collector to buy art.

mariam maqsood hassan

What first drew you to the arts? My love for art has always been a part of me and my surroundings definitely helped nurture that talent. It is the most personal part of me but also the feature I am most defined by. I am blessed to have grown up in an incredibly large, loving and artistically inclined family. My father is an avid art collector and there is not an inch of bare wall space in my parent’s beautiful home in Dubai. Our extended family is deeply rooted in the Pakistani art and culture scene. From playwrights to fashion designers, musicians and artists, I am very proud to say the Maqsoods have it all covered

Where did you derive your inspiration from to create Bahaar? What is your vision for Bahaar? After hosting a number of successful exhibitions and events, locally and internationally, it became clear to me that the traditional gallery model was not serving the interests of the budding artist-collector relationship. Bahaar aims to bridge this gap by connecting emerging artists from South Asia and the Middle East with young collectors globally. Our motto: “From the Artists heart to the Collectors home. Do you work solo or is there a team supporting the portal of Bahaar? We are a small team looking to grow soon! To put it

simply, I am the only constant so far. I work with freelancers and a shipping logistics team. How has the response been to the concept of Bahaar so far? Bahaar was officially launched in November 2015. It has not even been a year and we are already so excited about how much we have achieved. The response from Artists, Collectors, Friends and Family has been incredibly positive and has given proof to our concept. Our target audience is young collectors looking to explore the market and get some guidance on their purchases as galleries today are intimidating for the average young collector. At Bahaar we get access to works by young emerging talent that big commercial galleries and institutions have not yet tapped in to. What are the upcoming plans for ArtBahaar? Our website is currently under construction and has a lot of special features we are working on. We also have some exciting ideas for pop-ups in London and collaborations across the globe in the works but cannot reveal much more right now. Follow us for more info and updates… www.artbahaar.com Instagram: @artbahaar Have you seen hesitation or enthusiasm from artists so far? Only enthusiasm so far! Our model works in favor of the artist because we have non exclusive contracts which give artists the

mobility to consign their work elsewhere too. What has been the proudest and most fulfilling moment in your career to date? My proudest moment so far was Bahaar’s first sale to a person who found Bahaar on Instagram (and not through personal connections). It just goes to show the power of social media! What is one question that nobody asks you but you wish they did? The idea behind the brand and logo. In case you’re interested in knowing, we decided on the name Bahaar because we wanted an Urdu word which would be easy to pronounce in English but also had the same meaning in a few other Middle Eastern languages. ‘Bahaar’ means spring in 5 languages; Urdu, Farsi, Turkish, Kurdish and Azerbaijani. It resonated well because of our support for young emerging artists, seedlings who will bloom like flowers in Spring. ‘Bahaar’ also means spice in Arabic, which evokes the feeling of liveliness, excitement, eastern values and a red-hot emotion that we wish to awaken in the passionate collector’s heart. What advice would you give to a younger you? YOLO Are there any upcoming projects we should be excited for? Some cool pop ups and collaborations to come soon. planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I went to New York and then to Boston. It all started when I found out that my all time favorite celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic was holding his very famous Master Class in New York. Although there were still 2 months to the class I JUST couldn’t wait and quickly signed up for it. It had always been my dream to learn from the guru himself and meet him, after all he is the king of makeup and his work has always been a great source of inspiration for me. He does magic and this was one opportunity I couldn’t miss out on! So that’s how I decided to head off to New York for the weekend to fulfill my dream and then later to Boston for leisure.

Where did you stay? In New York we stayed at the Club Quarters on 6th avenue. As for Boston it was my cousin’s apartment on Boylston Street.

Who did you travel with? It was just my dad and I.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? In New York I didn’t get to dine in a lot but some of the places

travel diaries

What are the best shopping spots there? As for New York I was just there for the weekend and considering im a makeup addict I was mostly found in the Sephora or Mac stores at Times Square! The 6th and 7th avenues have some of the best stores. If you are a die hard Game of Thrones fan like me I would say do check out the HBO store, you will love it! As for Boston the Prudential mall, Copley mall and Newbury street has a variety of stores.

travel diaries Suggest places for a perfect night out. 230 fifth is a good spot for a night out in New York. The Standard hotels rooftop bar is also on the list. In Boston, Jillian’s is a good option for a bowling night and Royale if you’re into clubbing. What can you do over there do relax and unwind? The Mandarin Spa in New York is a good place to relax, I think a walk at the Central Park or Highline is a good option to unwind as well. In Boston, a cruise away for dinner or lunch can be pretty relaxing. Finally, any tips? My purpose was to attend the master class and one thing I learnt from it was to never give up on your dreams. What may seem like rocket science can actually be pretty simple! As for travel tips, I would say once in a while you really need to step ahead and get outside of your comfort zone. New York and Boston are those two cities where you can be out on your own without being dependent on anyone. You just need to explore the cities and you will have an experience of a lifetime!

travel diaries

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on There are a lot of sights you shouldn’t miss out on in New York. The Manhattan skyline is beautiful, in fact Manhattan itself! There is the Broadway. The Central Park and Highline are worth watching. There are the City Tours, the Broadway shows, the Empire State building and a cruise around the Statue of Liberty. As for Boston, there is just so much history . It’s one of the oldest cities and has a major role in the American revolution. So if you’re into history you should definitely not miss out on the Freedom Trail. The Faneuil Hall is a must visit as well. There is also the Boston Harbor and the North End which is also knows as Little Italy is a must visit. You feel like you’re roaming around

travel diaries

you shouldn’t miss out on are – Magnolia Bakery, their banana pudding is DIVINE! There’s Laduree if you have a sweet tooth for macaroons. Momofuku Milk Bar has the best cake. I always wanted to try out the famous Halaal guys which I did this time. There is Stanton Social and then there is ILILI for Lebanese food. Since New York is known for brunching, Upstairs at the Kimberly and Sarabeths are great for brunches. As for Boston, I tried PF Changs which is good for Chinese, I really enjoyed Thai Basil apart from that the North End aka Little Italy is best for their Italian cuisines. George Towns cupcakes, the cannoli at Mike’s Pastry and Max Brenner’s chocolates are a must try to treat your sweet tooth!

You won't win any races at the beginning of the week; going slow will be your MO. It's good to exercise patience, and there's a kind of quiet force that comes along with not rushing anyone. That said, by Wednesday, you'll be rushing all around. People who send you long, gushing emails will get a one-sentence response. Friends or coworkers who want an in-depth discussion of the details on Thursday will have to wait for a better day. Friday finds you flirting with youknow-who, but nothing heavy. Parents and relatives are a prominent part of your weekend -- or they're on your mind.

Friday finds you flirting with you-know-who, but nothing heavy. Parents and relatives are a prominent part of your weekend -- or they're on your mind.

The obstacle that plops down in your path on Monday may shake you up a bit, but stay the course. Focus. You knew there would be obstacles, but they're just part of the fun. Tuesday surrounds you with talkative people, but all you feel like doing is standing back and listening. By Wednesday, though, you're ready to join in on the conversations. Thursday and Friday find you feeling better and more ready for the future than you've been in a while. (Also, someone's clearly head over heels for you, which is fun and flattering.) This weekend, be thrifty.

leo

virgo

libra

A big lunch on Monday fills your belly and puts a huge smile on your face. You are deliriously happy around other people these days -- even family members -- especially when food is involved. A social dinner on Tuesday is not a bad idea. Wednesday and Thursday, you have your sights set on wilder, more ambitious ways of spending your time. You are in the mood for adventure; you are in the mood to buck authority. Don't resist this positive impulse -- it's about time you came out of your shell! This weekend is about new beginnings. Express yourself. Insist that the spotlight stay on you.

As much as you'd like to be spending the day in the park, Monday is all about work: your career, your standing -- stuff like that. Your reputation is on the up-and-up, in fact, and on Tuesday you feel like something of a celebrity. The circle of people around you is constantly lavishing you with praise, so put that circle of people to good use. Creative brainstorming figures into your day on Wednesday, and there's plenty of time for socializing on Thursday and Friday. This weekend has you feeling sensitive and being particularly honest. A bubble bath on Sunday would end the week beautifully.

Your head opens up on Monday, and you have visions of far-off lands. And you start thinking improbably about philosophy. And you try to devise new excuses to express yourself to people. On Tuesday, these impulses graduate into outright soul-searching. Research and analysis suddenly seem fun to you on Wednesday, and a logic puzzle captures your imagination. Thursday and Friday have the potential to be either stellar or stifling, depending on how you play your hand. (Go for stellar. It's an attitudinal thing.) This weekend, you're energized by being around other people.

Beauty hits you over the head on Monday -- it's everywhere. If you are in the middle of a romantic courtship, this is going to be a meaningful week. If you're not in the middle of a romantic courtship... well, wait a few days. Who knows? Tuesday is like a duet between you and you-know-who, and Wednesday is suited for deep communication. Try to go out and experience what the world has to offer you and your special someone on Thursday and Friday. Newness is good. Harmony is in the air. This weekend, take long walks through local parks. Look at the plants. Look at the sky.

Ah, the old give-and-take. An opponent may be a stronger force than you on Monday, but this is not an armwrestling competition. Ceding a minor victory at this point may be the key to getting what you want at a later date. Boldness and bravery are key on Tuesday as well. But in all your valiance, don't ignore the fine print this week, on Wednesday and Thursday especially. Be careful in any matters relating to money or business; taking a risk on Friday won't pay off. Being yourself this weekend will pay off though -- in ways you'd never imagined.

aquarius

pisces

You are not one to spend a lot of time looking back, but at the start of the week your head is in the history books. Or it's in some of your old journals. Or you're asking an old relative a lot of prying questions. Something tells you there are relevant lessons for you somewhere in the past -- and you're right. Someone who shares your interest in history might turn into a romantic interest overnight (on Wednesday or Thursday), and Friday will be romantic as well. Small projects around the house will occupy your weekend.

Love and beauty abound at the beginning of the week: romantic notes, poetry, artwork, delicious dinners -- you get the picture. If you're single, this energy may manifest itself in a few days of incredible creativity. Creativity will carry you through the week, actually, although Wednesday and Thursday are days of business and mutability. The moment you finish building a house of cards, someone breezes into the room and it topples. Alas... life. Don't be too specific in your hopes for Friday, and you won't be disappointed by what comes your way. This weekend will be barrels of fun.

You and your best friend are attached to each other -- at least by phone -- at the start of the week. Communication is key. How else are you going to get everything done? You see the value in having a trusted pal, and so does your trusted pal. By Wednesday, though, you start wondering if less talk and more action is in order. (It is in order. You're right.) Thursday is not a boring day, and neither is Friday. In fact, what with everything going on, there's a chance you'll lose sight of the bigger picture. And what is the bigger picture? Where are you headed? That's a question for the weekend.

On Monday, you're dreaming of the woods: camping, trees, a crackling fire. You may not be able to dart off into a forest any time soon, but do your best to spend some time in an environment that in some way relaxes you. By Wednesday, you will likely feel the opposite of relaxed as flighty people zip all around you. Anyone who makes you nervous doesn't deserve a lot of attention, so be short and sweet on Thursday. Cut to the chase on Friday as well. This weekend, you'll be able to dote on one special person, and nothing makes you happier on Sunday than giving someone else a back rub.
