planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? We had been planning a big family vacation for some time now. We considered possible destinations in Europe, US and Africa. Thanks to my husband’s past international assignments, we already had had an opportunity to live and travel both in Europe and Africa over many years. So in the end we settled on a vacation in the United States. Different members of my family had over the years been visiting the US individually but we had never travelled to America together as a group. So this time I insisted that the entire family go to the US together. We visited a lot of different places in the country but I think our time in New York was the best part of the trip.

My entire family was there including my husband and children.

Who did you travel with?

What are the best shopping spots there?

travel diaries

Where did you stay in New York? We stayed in a hotel right in the middle of Times Square. As soon as we’d step out from the hotel, we’d be right in the heart of Times Square. Manhattan is the heart of New York City and Times Square is the heart of Manhattan. It is such a lively place – always buzzing with activity. The huge glittering neon signs just keep going 24/7: very surreal, in a Blade Runner kind of a way. Most of all its about people -- the crowds never go away. W’d look out from the hotel room window at 3am and there would be loads of people just hanging around, everyone watching everyone else.

New York is the fashion capital of US and has all the upscale fashion houses. Apart from all the usual American stores such as Nordstorm and JC Penny, it is littered with thousands of upscale shops across Manhattan, especially on 5th Avenue and near by streets. I tried my best to not give in to temptation. The outlet malls, where branded and designer stuff is available at reduced prices, are much better places to shop than traditional big stores. I didn’t have time to visit one, but I am told there is such an outlet mall about 50 miles outside New York.

travel diaries

Finally, any tips? New York is not for the squeamish. Get your attitude on and get ready for the crowds.

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on Well, New York has some of the world’s most popular and recognized tourist landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, the

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Well one doesn’t go to New York to chill: there are other places more suitable for unwinding. It is an exciting lively place full of energy. If you do get worn out by the hustle and bustle of New York and want to take it easy for a day, you could do worse spending a few hours in the leafy Central Park. Unlike Times Square or Statue of Liberty, at least you’ll see some local New Yorkers there. Similarly, you could spend a lazy afternoon meandering aimlessly through the tree-lined artistic Greenwich village which is village only in name, of course. It is full of quaint shops and hidden away eateries.

travel diaries

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? New York is the most cosmopolitan city in the United States and every kind of cuisine is just a short taxi hop away. On one of the evenings we went for dinner at a Fabio Cucina Italiana restaurant. The cheeses and the pasta were amazing as was the hospitality of the staff. For a dessert I would recommend a small bakery named Douminique Ansel Bakery in Greenwich Village which is my daughter’s “find”. They are famous for their “Cronut” – a hybrid confection which is part Croissant and part donut. They always run out of Cronut by early afternoon so get there early. If you miss ought on the cronut, you can always try their salted caramel éclair and raspberry lemon pastries.

Suggest places for a perfect night out There are so many possibilities I wouldn’t know where to start. It all depends on what your preferences are. A dinner at a nice restaurant followed by a Broadway play would be two necessary ingredients in any such plan. My husband likes stand up comedy so one night he took me to Comedy Central, a very famous comedy club located near New York University’s urban campus. The night we went, there were two Saturday Night Live performers among the comics. They also had a very nice Olive Tree café right above the comedy cellar. My one regret – not being able to get tickets for new Broadway play Hamilton.

nearby Ellis Island, Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Central Park, the world famous art museums including Guggenheim, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, among so many others. Expect long queues at the Empire State Building but the panoramic views would make the effort worth it. You can take the ferry to Statue of Liberty from Battery Park which is on the tip of lower Manhattan, not far from Ground Zero. Be sure to set aside some time for Ellis Island where millions of new immigrants coming to America in the late 19th and early 20th Century were housed and examined before being let into the country. And did I mention Times Square?

Your social life sparkles and this may be the reason that you feel like mixing and mingling more regularly. Monday and Tuesday are excellent for any occasion, whether it involves business, friends and family, or romance. Someone's imaginative idea could impress you and you might want to take it further. Your social life could clash with your responsibilities midweek, but you should be able to resolve this, as the weekend's Full Moon encourages you to clear the air.

While a part of you may be concerned with the here and now and making your life as efficient, harmonious, and balanced as it can be, another side of you is thinking of the future. The main focus, though, is on taking stock of your wellbeing, work/life balance, and overall happiness. The future will be blessed by the seeds you plant today. By doing all you can to get your present situation working for you, you will soon reap rewards.

While you may be enjoying yourself, you might wonder if you're not wasting your time when you could be doing something more useful, like working through your to-do list or tending to business. You may find that when you give yourself a chance to recharge, new ideas seem to come to you that help you tackle key issues more easily. If you push yourself too hard, you'll find that you have to rest for longer periods over the weekend. Pace yourself!

The current focus encourages you to nurture yourself and do home-based things, so the coming weeks and months could prove very enjoyable. Monday and Tuesday mark a high point and are very upbeat, but this week you may need to handle some differences of opinion. Taking the right stance with someone who's averse to your plans is important. Giving in isn't an option, but a heart-to-heart talk and open mind could help you find a compromise without things getting too emotional.

leo

virgo

scorpio

You seem to be on a roll, with one golden opportunity coming your way that you'll want to grab. Be sure to check the terms and conditions, as a Mars/Neptune connection hints that all may not be as it seems. Regarding romance, this could be an interesting week as emotions build, and they could come to a head this weekend. With Uranus in the mix, it might be tempting to make an impulsive move. Avoid this, as you may regret it later.

To spend or not to spend? While you may feel flush at the start of the week, it might be best not to splurge but to save. The reason is that unstable influences suggest an unexpected bill or unknown expense may show up. By the weekend you may need to spend more than you planned, which could be an issue if you've already blown your budget. Careful money management can be very rewarding if you stick with it.

There are times when all you want is to be left to your own devices. However, this desire to do your own thing could be thwarted by family members who feel they should have a say in your affairs. The days ahead may need careful handling whether you're dealing with a partner or relative. There is the potential for a clash this weekend, but it can be minimized if you manage any situations sensitively, and you're a pro at that.

Your head and heart may be in conflict, making it hard to resolve a key situation. Should you take a compassionate approach and try to placate those involved or fight for your side? Any anxiety caused by this matter may be worse than just doing your best to resolve it. Offer to discuss it, but only do so if you feel you can be detached. If you're too emotional, it might be better to wait until things calm down.

aquarius

pisces

An encounter at the start of the week could leave you feeling positive about the future, but a part of you may have reservations about leaving your comfort zone. Don't suppress this. Talk it over with a good friend. You may find that your fears are groundless. Later, clashes are possible when discussing a plan or arranging a trip. With the weekend's Full Moon and edgy Uranus aspects, the wrong word could rock the boat. However, the right words can make everything OK.

A business move could prove very lucrative early this week, or you could receive a small windfall that makes you smile. Just try not to overspend, as you may have to part with more money than you thought, especially over the weekend. If you get any extra cash, your best bet would be to squirrel it away, as you may need it to pay off an unexpected bill or other expense. On another note, your love life could be sensational!

A social situation at the start of the week can be a lot of fun and may give you a boost as well as help you make supportive new friends. Still, there are times when you feel that your values are as different from those of your social group as chalk and cheese. You might also feel misunderstood. Don't do anything impulsive, though. If you can keep an open mind, you may end up liking each other even more.

You may get a chance at a special opportunity that could come down to your cooperative attitude. There is the potential for misunderstanding, too, so be sure you have everything written down in black and white. And try to keep emotions out of any decisions you make, particularly regarding your future, family, and loved ones. If those who care about you think you're overstretching yourself, don't be surprised if they say so. This can be your chance to reassure them.
