Could you describe your journey to becoming an artist? For me, art is something that makes me happy, so the journey is to be happy, to live a full life, where I am creating something, whether it is for myself or for a customer. I never went to art school, but I have dabbled in everything from origami to oil painting. By profession I am a journalist and a cartoonist, and I view writing and drawing the same way I see art - as a creative process. Who was your original inspiration? My original inspiration is my mother, an artist and social worker who has never stuck to one medium. The first drawings and paintings I was exposed to were hers, and they were lovely. Who are some of your favorite illustrators? This is a tough question, as I have never settled on one medium as an 30

artist. Saira Wasim is one contemporary artist I admire for her beautiful attention to detail and her excellent sense of humor. Most recently I have been obsessing over the work of Mahmoud Farshchian, a Persian Miniaturist. As a cartoonist, my favourite Pakistani cartoonist is Sabir Nazar and I also follow the work of a few international cartoonists like Carlos Latuff, David Horsey and Mark Rowson. Popular culture, from comic books to pulp fiction, has had a huge effect on my artwork and sense of humour. I especially love quirky cartoons like Ed, Edd and Eddie, and Japanese anime. What inspired you to start Penguin Pop? I painted a shoe for myself and it came out really well. I love shoes, from my beat up converse to super high stilettos, but I wanted to have something unique in my wardrobe. Penguin Pop was a way to provide that option to everyone. I loved the fact that a customer could ask for a unicorn high-fiving a dinosaur and I could paint it for them, and paint it well. What is one of your personal favorite items at Penguin Pop? My favorite item by far is my Daft Punk themed shoe. I absolutely love the music and love the shoe. I also love the comic-collage wedges. When are images better than words? When people are not ready to put in the effort listen or read, which is most of the time. As a journalist I have realized that a single cartoon can have a bigger impact than the best-written article. Images can produce emotions and opinions faster than words. What helps you be more creative? For me, being creative is about time, experience and effort. It’s about mental training and finding the time and space to get better at one’s art. One is born with some predispositions, some potential talents, but I don’t really believe that one is born an artist. Creativity is about time and
effort as much as it is about innate talent. What is one thing you feel most passionately about? I am extremely passionate about politics, which may explain why I am a journalist (I also teach political science part time). I am most interested in the role of ethics in politics and how popular culture can impact political ideologies. By nature I am very quiet, but ask me a question about a political issue and I can talk for days. What is your take on Pakistan’s current art culture? What would you like to do to improve it? I have a very optimistic view of our current art culture. I have seen friends excel in Pakistan, whether it is architecture, fashion design, animation or fine art. I would like to see our society more open to young people exploring new career options and would like to see more people going to art exhibits and museums. Art has to become a part of culture, whether old or contemporary and can't just be an academic interest and fodder for drawing room discussion. It needs to be made accessible to the common man, and we need public galleries and museums for that. Any advice to aspiring cartoonists? For me, finding a niche has been great for my career. Since I never went to art school, my expression on paper is sometimes limited, but I feel my background in politics and journalism can make up for it. For artists who can draw and paint better than me, there are so many avenues now open, from graphic novels to animation. It is just a matter of exploring your ideas and sharing them. If they are good, good things will happen. What would you like to say to your fans? Wear and buy what you enjoy and what defines you rather than what defines the designer who made the item. Find your own style. Make fashion work for you.

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? Thailand was one place I had yet to tick off from my travel list. Having visited it's sister countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Maldives, I just couldn't leave this one out. Thailand has by far been the most relaxing trip. Famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, tropical climate, clear skies - it definitely did not fall short of my expectation. Having read about the hospitable Thai people, the bustling markets, buzzing nightlife and delicious food, I could not resist visiting this tropical beauty!! Who did you travel with? My Dad makes it a point to get away from the busy Lahori

life atleast once a year. He's the driving force behind all our national and international escapades. So he was there, along with a cousin from Islamabad who just loves living life to its fullest! Where did you stay? We visited three cities so three different hotels. The first was Holiday Inn at Mao Khao beach. It was twenty minutes away from the main city - Pattong. The hotel is beautiful and you find nothing but serenity there. It has private swimming pools, the beach is right upfront and the cuisine variety is so vast that you can hardly think about eating from any place else. In Bangkok we were at Grand Sukhmvit hotel, one

travel diaries has amazing Cabaret shows one of which was the Alcazar show. Exotic dancers, over the top costumes and mind-boggling choreography. A must watch for everybody.
What are the best shopping spots there? The shopping is mostly in Bangkok. For the high end brands you have malls like MBK, Siam Platinum and Central World. One interesting thing I discovered were the wholesale malls. Amazing trendy clothes at unbelievable pprices. And then there are the markets like the famous Chatuchak market where almost every kind of item is available.
Suggest places for a perfect night out. Pattong has an awesome night life. All the bars and clubs are situated on one big street. The streetlife is magnificient! The music from every club bursts through its windows and fills the street with a mixture of sounds which can be very pleasing to music lovers. I personally enjoyed taking long walks on the beach at night, enjoying the calm atmosphere - but thats just me!

Finally, any tips? Thailand is all about adventures so dont think twice before trying something new unless its the fried sting rays and lizards, then you might want to rethink your decision.

Tell us about the sites that noone should miss out on Well, Bangkok Angor Temple has the famous statue of the resting Buddha, along with many others. Mai Khao beach was perfect! It was beautifully serene because of the privacy. And it being in front of my hotel I would go there regularly for a walk on the beach or even to take a dip in the ocean! Pattaya is the most happening place mainly because the whole town is located on one wide road which has all the hotels, resteraunts and bars. Pattaya also
What can you do over there to relax and unwind? You can have a long walk on the beach. The cool gusts of wind refresh a person to the extent that it feels like magic. Head to Pattong Beach - there's a party on every corner. The nightclubs are entertaining and perfect for getting your dance on! If you're a shopaholic then I suggest the best way to unwind is by going to the weekend markets which are unbelievably inexpensive!

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? As I mentioned before, most of the food I had was from the vast variety of cuisine available at the Holiday Inn Hotel. But I would definitely recommend the tropical drinks like the Butterfly PBA flower juice which is a perfect summer drink!

of the busiest places in the city with the grand malls and street markets located nearby. And lastly, at Pattaya we stayed at Ibis.
