For this collection, Nida Azwer draws inspiration from Arabesque, a unique form of Islamic artistic decoration. Based in a pure colour palette consisting of whites, golds and silvers the collection features the label’s signature cuts with varied hemlines. Individual creations have been treated with emboss and foil printing, pleating and cutwork creating layers and textures that reflect a contemporary look. Expect silhouettes that are airy and flowy in fabrics such as pure silks, cotton nets, voile, chiffon and organza.

LAWN WARS

BY AMNA SALMAN

S

pring is finally here and with it the much awaited or shall I say much feared lawn mania is upon us again. The elaborate advertising campaigns are creating hype, competing for our attention and building anticipation. Procuring that must have print that the fashion parade is craving and talking about incessantly becomes a need. Does it matter that the uniformed parade will be spotted at hip food joints from the word go? Apparently not.

However Sana and Safinaz ( who continue to design the most sought after lawn year after year) believe the campaign should be able to entice and excite the consumer but what counts is design and quality. Safinaz Muneer observes that the client today is very smart and savvy and to be successful you have a great campaign, quality of design and quality of fabric. Faraz agrees and adds that good quality is vital for customers to keep coming back to the same label.

News of aunties and aspiring aunties making the trip to the tailor straight after having grabbed their favourite jora after a bit of a push and shove use to surprise us but not any more!

Sana and Safinaz don’t associate with a textile company anymore, however they believe it’s a good idea for new designer lawns that need that extra push in terms of finance. In terms of inpirations they stick to florals and geometrics and stay away from figurines.

So what is it that makes the designer lawn world go round? Is it the need to be identified as one of the wealthy or fashion forward? Wearing the same outfit as the top socialite or the celeb modelling it? Or is lawn a necessity to survive the cruel summer? So what is it that makes us buy one lawn and not the other? Faraz Manan of Crescent lawn believes that having a globally recognised and loved face such as Kareena Kapoor helps promote the product to a wider audience and create higher demand while Khadijah Shah of Elan has chosen our local celebrity, Mahirah Khan. 54

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

All in all it seems the Lawn market has not saturated but grown up as the customer is making more informed decisions. My tip would be to enjoy the catalogue but make your decision based on the real thing, make sure you see, hold and feel your favourite lawn before you purchase it. Whoever you choose it seems for designer lawn its important to have a popular face that the average girl wants to feel like and therefore dress like. Retailers such as Saleem Fabrics believe that people associate with what looks good in the catalogue to a large extent and even come in asking "Kareena Wali Lawn Dikhayain."

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH MUSE I started at 13, secretly cutting up own my clothes to dress my dolls. I didn't make it a career till a couple of years ago. Tell us a little bit about yourselves: Faryal: I was the child who wanted to be an actress or a fashion designer, or a film maker. I just knew that I would be good at any one of these professions. My parents dragged us to all the museums and botanical gardens they could find, and the experiences paid off. (Moeed) I loved drawing and painting, and almost became an architect after college, but ended up working on Wall Street, which was very hard work, but a lot of fun. I always missed the creative side, till I started MUSE. Faryal, when did you first start designing & what inspired you? 56

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

The discovery of a trove of Vogue magazines when I was ten, my mother's passion for clothes and embroidery, and my childhood summers in Paris were all inspirations. Faryal, as a designer, what are some of the challenges you face? Putting together a design team that understands what I want for MUSE is a challenge and a half. What makes your brand different from the rest? In a really saturated market, we are the only fashion

house in Pakistan that is truly luxury - we use fabrics and accessories from the finest French and Italian mills, to create modern and sleek designs. Classic fashion or Modern fashion, which one do you prefer and why? It's not one or the other, we always want to create classic and modern pieces. Are you comfortable with your clients wanting to customize your designs? Not many want to do that, and we prefer it that way. Tell us about the growth of MUSE in Pakistan as a high end luxury brand. People understand the importance of excellent quality fabrics and accessories, and the brand has seen superb growth. Our clients understand and encourage the MUSE vision. What is your personal style statement? Faryal: I love volume, I love tulle, beautiful shoes, and a strong lip color. Moeed: Sleek but relaxed, and sharp shoes are a must! Tell us about your latest collection. Spring Love - this is a collection driven purely by the beautiful shimmering fabrics that we’ve recently ordered. Who are you favorite designers and why? We love the duo at Valentino for their use of fabrics and the accessory design, Alber Elbaz at Lanvin for creating a tough feminine look, and Ricardo Tisci's cool aesthetic at Givenchy.

Rapid fire: Favorite holiday destination? Faryal: Paris and New York. Moeed: Favorite? The BVIs. Can’t beat the beach for a holiday. Favorite cuisine? Faryal: Sushi. Moeed: Gimme a good juicy burger anytime in any country. Your perfect Sunday? Faryal: Brunch with friends, cleaning my closets, watching a film, and delicious dinner. Moeed: A long brunch that doesn’t end. Guilty pleasure? Faryal: Shoe shopping. Moeed: Sleeping. It’s actually a luxury. Favorite perfume/Cologne? Faryal: Diorissimo. Moeed: Himalaya by Creed Hobbies? Faryal: Is shopping a hobby? Moeed: I have quite a few, but am bored of all them at the moment. Most daring thing you’ve done? Faryal: So many. I don't want to talk about any one of them. Moeed: My most daring things have invariably looked the most stupid the next morning, so perhaps best not shared. Finally, 3 words to describe yourself. Faryal: Intuitive, vulnerable, and feminine. Moeed: Driven, curious, and kind.

Any advice you would like to give to other upcoming or aspiring designers? Be prepared to work the hardest that you ever have, because you are trying to put your soul into a product! Be passionate, curious, and patient, patient, patient! 2014

one? And thank goodness for that! It was bloody awful. How can you have phantom aches for an order which was largely dependent on marrying your cousin?

the new Tribes of the punjab SANAM TASEER The other day a friend sat down on our brunch table fuming. Another mutual friend had given him a business proposal for a joint venture. She was to put up the capital and he was to provide the skill. “Is that unfair?” I asked genuinely befuddled. “She expects me to work for her? I’m a feudal! “ How much longer are we going to keep dragging out that old coffin? As far as I knew he had a day job. Isn’t the definition of not being a feudal that one is salaried? Feudalism is dead and overt displays of old class one-upmanship are about as acceptable now as bumless trousers. But often it seems the old elite never got the memo that agricultural society is dead and all we have now is an urban 58

For a while Omer and I were obsessed with Shadi.com. Omer thought it should become a channel rather than a TV show with back stories and sponsored on camera Big Brother-like joint family honeymoons. Kind of American Idol meets The Bachelor. I still think its genius but I digress. At the beginning of the show they listed the qualities they sought in a woman. “Ghulo Miloing” with the joint family and getting along with darling mummsy was up there but number one was caste.’ I am Jat, she must be Gujar..I am kakazai, I am Rajput...etc. (ok no one not even kakazais want kakazais... hahaha) But either way, welcome to the end of days. It’s time to tell the tribes of the Punjab that the caste system died around the time the number of goats owned by your father stopped being a factor in your personal attractiveness. That is not to say we are caste-less. The old tribes of the Punjab have now been replaced with new ones that are just as insular and, above all, smug-- Mill-Owners, NGO-types, yuppies, Burgers, techies, show-biz crowd, pseudos, desi-boyz, the Polo-lot, music-crowd, metrosexuals etc. Like the tribes of old they all have their own neatly carved out territories, proffessions and even their own emblems. If the NGO types had a flag it would be emblazoned with a cloth handbag. The Metros would be flying a Bieber-cut at full mast and the Mill-Owners could lay claim to the symbol of the Hermes Belt as their very own. You can now graze from tribe to tribe and be one thing at home, another at work, another at night and another on holiday. Its not quite the Utopian happy ending imagined by Marx and Engels but at least it was a bloodless revolution and the weapons were mass culture, Facebook, cheap travel, pop music, divorce and big cities.

Look out for your fellow humans as the week begins and all will go well. On Monday and Tuesday, you may need to curb your natural competitiveness (and use your ample charms instead) to get ahead. On Wednesday and Thursday, you’re lost in your own thoughts — and they’re not all pleasant, unfortunately. Expect to butt heads if you put those cranky notions into action. (Or better yet, just lay low for now.) On Friday and Saturday, you’re back to your optimistic, outgoing self, so seek out some adventure. On Sunday, trust your abilities — and the abilities of others to help.

If you’re expecting boredom as the week begins, prepare to be (pleasantly) disappointed. Your routine gets some spark on Monday and Tuesday and you should follow up on any chance for fun — even if it means your work has to wait. On Wednesday and Thursday, your passions will push you into action. Just make sure they don’t push you into trouble, too. On Friday and Saturday, your trademark patience will pay off. Now is the time to pause and ponder, even if others are rushing ahead. This Sunday, get good and grounded. Someone in the know will give you the gift of enlightenment.

Every week should begin this way! You’re full of energy and enthusiasm on Monday and Tuesday — and you’ve got ample charm to inspire others at home, at work or anywhere. Expect to slow down on Wednesday and Thursday, though: You’ll be more intent on analysis than action. That unusual intelligence and insight should carry you well into Friday and Saturday, when you can put those ideas to work — and you can expect some help from a likeminded partner to make things happen. On Sunday, be flexible. Use your trademark flexibility to adapt to the unexpected.

Watch for troubles on the home front as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday could both bring domestic conflicts, but a little empathy on your part could go a long way. By Wednesday and Thursday, emotions are running high. That can lead to excitement in romance and relationships — but amped-up emotions spell nothing but trouble for any financial or legal issues. Play it safe. On Friday and Saturday, give your super-sensitivity a break and take some time out for yourself. This Sunday, find an imaginative way to deal with a problem.

scorpio

Everybody is on your side as the week begins. And how could they not be? You’ve got all the answers (and you’re having all the fun!) on Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy the popularity. On Wednesday and Thursday, you’ll quiet down ever so slightly — now is an excellent time for chin-rubbing introspection and quiet analysis. You’ll kick back into action just in time for the weekend and you can expect applause, affection and admiration wherever you take your dramatic presence. On Sunday, help yourself out by helping someone else.

Show some prudence on financial matters as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both bad days for impulse purchases — but they’re great days for other kinds of exuberance, like spontaneous opinions and wide-eyed ideas. On Wednesday and Thursday, indulge your intellect by striking up conversations and following your curiosity. On Friday and Saturday, resist the urge to rush ahead. Sometimes the most daring — and worthy — risk is to kick back and just let things happen. On Sunday, rest on your laurels. Your hard work has paid off and it’s time for some fun and romance.

Who can resist your flirtatious smile and easygoing outlook? Nobody, at least not as the week begins — you’ll be charming socks off by the score on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday, you might still be generous with your attention, but you’ll be stingy with your cash. Put that fiscal fussiness to use by plotting out a smart financial plan. On Friday and Saturday, you’re full of yourself — but in a good way! You’ve got a lot to say and you’re surrounded by people who want to hear what’s on your mind. On Sunday, take some quiet time for yourself.

The week could start on a difficult note. Your heart and your head can’t seem to agree on Monday and Tuesday and this might be a better time to think than act (especially if you can count on some back-andforth banter with friends). Your outlook on Wednesday and Thursday should clear up dramatically, finding you exceptionally charismatic and confident. You’ll know what you want and you’ll know how to get it. On Friday and Saturday, you can expect to get caught up in the moment. Somebody persuasive wants to sweep you up in their plans, but you can count on your instincts to guide you. On Sunday, start something new.

Who loves you, baby? Everybody, apparently — or at least it’ll seem that way as this week begins. Friends and admirers will rally to your banner on Monday and Tuesday and it’s a good time to make your wishes known. You can expect an attentive audience. On Wednesday and Thursday, that outgoing mood could shift to shyness. Maybe it’s time for some peace and quiet to recharge? By Friday (and on into Saturday), you’ll be back to your jovial, genial self and you can count on having fun even if things don’t go the way you planned. On Sunday, do something truly unique and original — even if it’s just a small, symbolic gesture.

Your ambitiousness will pay off as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both great days to start projects and make things happen. Everyone might not be on the same over-achieving wavelength right now, but they’ll at least have the good sense to get out of your way. Wednesday and Thursday should give you time and perspective to step back and re-assess where you’re at — and you can count on friends to help you take accounts. On Friday and Saturday, you need to stay disciplined in the details, but try to let your mind roam to suss out the big picture. On Sunday, you’ve got the brains and brawn to accomplish anything.

Expect to make close connections as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday are both perfect days for getting your point across and winning over friends (and maybe even making new ones). Wednesday and Thursday see you slowing back down and turning inward, as thoughts shift to the big picture. Are you making enough progress in your chosen work? On Friday and Saturday, others will expect you to take charge — but in a fun way! Organize an outing (or a party maybe?) with friends both new and old. Don’t bother trying to accomplish anything on Sunday. Just try to kick back and enjoy the day.

Watch out for conflict as the week begins. Others might not be on your side on Monday and Tuesday and even former partners could have ambitions at odds with your plans. Don’t be afraid to toss out the old in favor of the new and on Wednesday and Thursday be extra careful of anyone trying to take advantage. Stand up for yourself and don’t back down! If you can formulate a smart plan on Friday and Saturday, expect to have luck on your side. The stars will aid your efforts to do the right thing. On Sunday, take the lead. Others will look to you to provide direction — or to point the way towards someone else who will.
