MAHeen kARIM Shehla CHATOOR fahad hussayn nida azwer
p a p e r a z z i o ur favo urite o u tfits from fas h i on pa
INAAYA Naushaba Brohi’s Inaaya made a promising debut at FPW. Her collection touched all the right notes. A pioneer in ethical fashion, the label combines classic inimitable techniques with artisanal production. The wide range of fabrics and textures used from mesh to crochet, applique to mirror work and gota, were impressive! The collection, titled Liminal, was a finely crafted east meets west recipe.
SHEHLA CHATOOR Another designer that left us wanting more was Shehla Chatoor with her capsule collection for the Toni&Guy trend show. She showcased a bold collection of metallic gold, bronze and black. From jumpsuits, cocktail dresses, gowns and saris, Shehla has shown us that her talent and creativity is limited to none.
MAHEEN KARIM
Maheen Karim’s flirty, flowy evening glam pieces for a capsule collection for the Toni&Guy trend show consisted of lots of blacks and used fabrics such as silk, net and lace. The outfits were minimalistic and sexy and we really wanted to see more!
pakis tan week 2 0 1 4
HSY HSY’s Venom collection was one of the most awaited showcases this year at FPW. The collection did ample justice to it’s theme. Those reptile and snake skin prints unquestionably sent across their deadly message, which was none other than drop dead gorgeous! Overall, the collection consisted of gowns with trails and capes. The use of Zig Zag paterns made for a great statement.
p a p e r a z z i # thewis h lis t p a p e r a z z i
NIDA AZWER Nida Azwer’s crisp white collection showed us that simplicity can be the biggest statement. Inspired by Arabesque, a unique form of Islamic artistic decoration, the collection consisted of flowy feminine silhouettes in pure silks, cotton nets, voile, chiffon and organza. We loved the cutwork & metallic foil printing on sleeves, palloos and daamans.
ALI XEESHAN If there was one show to remember, it was Ali Xeeshan. The Asian inspired collection with solid bursts of orange and yellow was refreshing. Excellent choreography, a great playlist and fabulous accessories added drama to a beautiful collection & made the show fun to watch.
pa p e r a z z i
FAHAD HUSSAYN Fahad Hussayn showed a palette of nudes, greys & off whites. Although he did incorporate the comeback of short shirts this season, the longer flowy silhouettes were easy to fall in love with. His signature embroidered blazers didn’t fail to impress.
KAYSERIA WARDAH SALEEM The Wardah Saleem label displayed an exquisite collection with vibrant colours and modern silhouettes. With lots of golds, browns, oranges as well as a few fluorescents she showcased a variety of digital prints. Our favourites were her embellished and cropped jackets.
Has Kayseria upped their game with this showcase? One hundred percent! The collection was bright and beautiful. Festive and fun, the collection was a celebration of our culture and brought back the ethnic trend. The styling and accessories added to the collection and made the Kayseria show a success!
and how many were influenced by the article in question.
let’s talk about sexism RABIA DADA This morning I read an article titled ‘Why I won’t be cheering for Shahid Afridi anymore’. In response, let me first clarify – I too am a woman, vaguely educated, and (on most days) successfully pretend to be a professional. I agree that sexist and misogynist comments from a national hero/ punching bag (depending on the week and how the cricket team are doing – we are a fickle lot, aren’t we?) can be incredibly dangerous. Similarly a column in a national newspaper can go quite some way in colouring opinions and reactions. Case in point – several dozen reposts and retweets of the article in question accompanied by declarations varying from disappointment to disgust. Apparently a lot of people didn’t like what Afridi said, and wish to, in return, withdraw their support. Fair enough. I just wonder how many of these decisions to renounce Afridi were based on his comments alone, 54
PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE
2014
I wonder about its influence because the article in question sells us more than the title alone. First of all, why does any conversation criticising a sexist man or comment require a rundown of women’s achievements? Why can we not celebrate Sharmin Obaid Chinoy’s success without pointing out that ‘no man has proven their ‘might’ to out-do her’? Why must we draw battle lines amongst ourselves, within Pakistanis, when there are already so many drawn against us, already? Why can’t we celebrate each other’s achievements and successes without pointing the finger and disparaging someone else? Why, I ask, can we not criticize Afridi without taking a stance which pits men in competition with women? Most of all, why can we not celebrate our ‘passion’ and ‘intelligence’ without discounting others? (In this instance the women of Saudi Arabia who the author will have you believe lack the ‘passion’ to fight to be a part of society – I imagine Mai al Swayas would beg to differ…) I suppose my point is, I disagree with Afridi’s comments (although, I have to say I make a pretty mean Nihari), and I do agree that his comments can be really quite dangerous in the Pakistani context where is seen as a demi-god. However, we should also be cognisant of the power and effect of commentary in a national newspaper – a platform which affords us a modicum of reliability. I think it is not only dangerous, but irresponsible, to respond to sexism/misogyny/ignorance with commentary which turns the conversation into one of men v. women and places us as odds with each other as Pakistanis. Perhaps Afridi’s gaffe could have been used to start an important (and desperately needed) conversation about the role and status of women in Pakistan (and not just those of us who are afforded the access which equips us to write newspaper columns, make films, fly planes etc.)- but once we start comparing and competing it pretty much puts paid to that. As they say, once the competition starts, conversation stops.

My mehndi jora was made by my sister Abeera Sami Ahsanuddin. I had two of my mother’s old dupattas, emerald green and shocking pink with sacha gota, and that’s what the jora was conceptualised around.I wanted to keep the look simple and fresh so I went with barely there makeup (so I chose not to get professional makeup) and accessorised with flowers.
sami khan Being a bride is possibly one of the most difficult processes one goes through! We plan our wedding day and what we will wear years before the actual wedding. Meticulous planning goes into each look from the colour combinations and embellishment of the outfits to the jewellery, hair and makeup. Here we feature some of our favourite brides and show you what they wore to their special days. Find out what they have to say!

I wore my mother’s lemon and gold valima jora because it had sentimental value to me and because I always loved old school traditional brides. I wore my grandmother’s nauratan which was given to my mom and then passed on to me. I went to Aashi at Nabila’s for my hair & makeup because I wanted a natural glow & wanted to look like myself. The best thing about her is that she never cakes you up.

For the reception I chose Meeras by Nilofer Shahid. I chose her because I wanted a classic timeless piece and she customised the whole thing. I always wanted to wear red but I didn’t want something typical, so I added a twist with blue. She has a great colour aesthetic and I wanted it to be offbeat but still come together. I chose polki jewellery to finish the look.

If your life were a movie, Monday would be the part when you suddenly see what you need to do very clearly, and nothing can stand in the way of you doing it. Tuesday and Wednesday, you collect an Academy Award for your performance. People who pass you on the street pause and walk backwards a few yards just to explain what a role model you are to them. It’s funny, then, that Thursday and Friday should be so gloomy. An odd feeling follows your accomplishments on those days. The feeling is: What next? Saturday and Sunday, dive into your next big venture without thinking hard about it.
At some point on Monday, you tune everything else out and suddenly thinkWhat pops into your head isn’t a cure to global conflict, but it’s important to you. It’s the kind of vision that throws light on a number of answers. On Tuesday and Wednesday, you’re thinking deeply, and you may be a little too devoted in what others say. Keep in mind that you’re just extra-sensitive right now. Thursday and Friday, the solution to a small problem comes to you as advice from a good friend. Saturday and Sunday, take it easy.
Like a certain out-of-season mythical holiday figure, you’re drawing up lists and checking them twice on Monday. The problem is that nothing is clear at the moment, so try as you might to classify and maneuver, it just doesn’t work. Tuesday and Wednesday, look for other ways of systematizing your life. Consider the ideas presented in the context of friendly debate. Remember that you stand to learn something. Thursday and Friday, deep thinking turns into intense dreaming. Make yourself heard on Saturday and Sunday.
For some reason, the face you present to the world on Monday is not the face you think you’re presenting. Expect wild misconception of your mood. Maybe going out with friends isn’t the best idea. Tuesday and Wednesday, the tasks you face are largely moneyrelated. The more flexible you are, the quicker everything will be squared away. On Thursday and Friday, your energy level is finally as high as you’d like it to be. You’ll be stopping to help old ladies carry groceries up the stairs. This weekend, too, you’re busy as a bee.

With all the passion you have on Monday, you can’t go wrong. Convey your regard to someone with an original jingle. Make a winning impression. Tuesday and Wednesday are entirely lacking in inspiration for original ideas, what with all the problems laid out before you — power struggles, other issues. But Thursday and Friday put you in an extraordinarily creative mood, and you want to do something expressive. Listen and be open to anything. Follow your instincts. Saturday and Sunday, someone teaches you something interesting.
The romance of Sunday extends into Monday and starts your week on what may be the best foot possible. It’s the foot you use to tango. It’s excellent when romance has a creative length to it, Tuesday and Wednesday, the urge to clean house overpowers you — it’s a happy, useful urge. If, while you’re cleaning, someone calls to ask for your advice on something, don’t take the opportunity to be critical. Be purely positive. Thursday and Friday, others won’t be as organized as you but don’t let it get to you. This weekend, your spirits are high.
You’re flooded with thoughts of the past on Monday. You may be thinking about world history or about personal history — whatever the case; you’re emotional about it. Chalk up the downer feeling to the emotional fluctuations of everyday life. And chalk this up to the same: Tuesday and Wednesday is nothing but fun. Good times and great conversations. On Thursday and Friday, you’re inundated with work projects. Getting as much done as possible before the weekend is smart. Saturday and Sunday, you’ll want to spend all your time staring into someone’s eyes.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way — this is truer than ever on Monday. Let your determination make the pessimists step back. But be pleasant about it. As you initiate new projects in one empire of your life, another empire — your home life — seems to take a turn for the worse, especially on Wednesday. The problems are not as bad as they seem, though, and Thursday and Friday provide you with plenty of time for pure pleasure. Music or theater figures importantly. Saturday and Sunday, as much as you’d like to stay in the art-appreciation mindset, fitness is crucial.
aquarius
pisces
The most important thing on Monday is that you stay on the tracks. Keeping to your schedule is important, too. You’re a vital link in a much bigger system and there’s a lot riding on you, so be disciplined. Thankfully, Tuesday and Wednesday offer chances to have fun. Maybe you’ll meet an intelligent traveler who takes a liking to you. Romance could occur. Thursday and Friday, you’re constantly sidetracked — though in a dreamy, pleasant way. (Just make sure you’re not in anyone else’s way.)
By asking someone for a favor on Monday, you may be doing them a favor without knowing it. So, if they say yes, don’t feel guilty. As a way of expressing your thanks (to them and to the world at large), make your services available — for free — on Tuesday and Wednesday. Friends helping friends is a beautiful kind of economy. Then, Thursday and Friday, the time comes to do yourself a favor. Maybe this means splurging at a spa, or maybe it means something more modest, like buying a book you’ve had your eye on. This weekend is a perfect time for reading.

Saving money can be a source of pleasure, a challenge, a game of sorts. Rather than buying wrapping paper and a card, write a message to someone on a piece of paper and wrap your present in the note. You know, that kind of thing. Tuesday and Wednesday, extend your creativity by communicating with perfect strangers — you never know with whom you might hit it off. Thursday and Friday, you won’t be hitting it off with many people, what with the bizarre waves of weariness crashing upon you. In the latter half of the week, Saturday and Sunday are your social days.
You know that feeling when your favorite song comes on the radio? That enthusiastic, overjoyed feeling? That’s what Monday is like, but on a bigger scale, obviously, because it doesn’t last only three minutes; it lasts all day. Tuesday and Wednesday, apply yourself to a project that has eluded you for a long time. The breakthrough won’t come until you’re already a few steps into it. Then, Thursday and Friday, be purely creative. If you’ve been writing songs, write more. Indulge your impulses. Get work done some other time. That said, on Saturday and Sunday, if your family needs you, be there.
