brainwashed to be whitewashed SANAM TASEER An artwork titled mirror mirror by Carrie Mae Weems shows a black woman looking into a mirror where a white woman appears. The subtitle reads ‘Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the finest of them all?’ The mirror says “Snow White, you black *****, and don’t you forget it!!!’ Apa Zubaida recently came in a bleach cream advert with the catch phrase ‘gora bane ga pakistan’ Amid the widespread condemnation I thought they were being a bit hard on poor old Apa. Its punishment enough that in the advert she glows with a bluish sepulchral hue like white underpants under a black light at a dance party. Let a few gullible mugs waste money on trying and being fairer if they want to. That’s what the free market is all about. No one raises a hue and cry when people sell products that con fatties. (I, of course, being one of the said oft conned fatties). 54

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

But is it harmless? Can the concept of white beauty exist without a frame of black ugliness? If ‘white’ is fragile, if white is pure then dark must be coarse and savage. If the beauty of white women is founded on charm, purity, and delicacy than the inverse must be true - Black is dumb, angry, fleshy, fertile, and strong. Only whiteness—in opposition to its antithesis blackness, is deserving of love. Just as Snow White was loved at first sight by a necrophiliac prince I too have a white friend who inspires instant devotion. Unfortunately, or perhaps consequently, she is a ruthless predator when it comes to relationships. I am often left to console a string of broken hearted boyfriends who always echo the refrain ‘But inside she is so pure.’ My words ‘She’s not pure you idiot she is just white.’ usually fall on deaf ears. White girls are Disney Princesses who cannot possibly be cruel and shallow. Beauty is often subtly twinned with morality. But anti-blackness in South Asia is also not just about who bags the best boys. It is also tied in with deeply embedded class hatred. Black is smelly because black is poor. Indians are running a ‘Dark is Beautiful’ campaign with a sultry actress at its fore. But given the choice between whiteness and blackness, how do you choose blackness, when even a child already knows that white is generally synonymous with the wealthy elite who arbitrate their lives? So Apa Zubaida, thanks for the totkas, but we don’t need an extra pinch of self loathing in an already over seasoned khichri bubbling over with ignorance and shame.

In the Spotlight Fashion designer Sehr Khosa talks to Paperazzi! How would you describe your childhood? I was born in Multan, and studied there most of my life. I was the youngest of the two brothers. I lost my brother Jehan when I was 12 years old. That’s when we moved to Lahore. I’m the youngest and the most loved by my family! What do you value most in your friends? For me, friendship is loyalty. That’s what I value the most. Who are your fashion influences/inspirations? My personal favourites are Coco Chanel, Elie Saab, Manish Malhotra and Elan. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work I am a Multan born barrister at law from Lincoln’s Inn. I take my inspiration from my parents and brother Shahbaz. I practiced law with my father and brother, who are both very talented lawyers. I started a design house called Allechant four years ago, it’s primary purpose was to help provide for the needy, since then Allah has been kind. How would you define your personal style? My personal style has always been western conservative. Mostly silk fabrics, bouncy locks and the no makeup look. (which btw is created with makeup haha!) What is your biggest strength as a designer? I’ve always been in awe of fairytales, and it’s the royal gowns that Allechant makes so that each and everyone of us can be a princess with or without the Prince! Since you’re a barrister as well, do you plan to practice anytime soon? Law has always been my passion and my first love! I had been practicing it with my father and brother just taking a break to give more time to Allechant. How would you define the fashion scene in Pakistan? Pakistan has the most stylish people I know. Every individual has their own unique sense of style. Pakistan street style on Instagram has done a good job showing us how chic Pakistani women are. 64

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2014

What do you wish you had more time for? I always wanted to properly launch an Allechant shoe line. InshAllah soon, when I have more time on my hands. What is something very few people know about you? That I’m a great cook! What do you like to do for fun? For me fun is something I enjoy and that’s to see a smile on someone’s face. I would find someone needy and help them, The more the merrier. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? Physically I would change my nose haha! Rapid fire: Favourite holiday destination Take me to London and nobody gets hurt :) Your fashion icon My mother Guilty pleasure Omg I have the biggest sweet tooth give me cake and abracadabra it’s gone! Favoutire accessory My bracelet Favourite perfume Tomford Sahara Noir and Ellie Saab Three words to describe yourself Adventurous, loyal and a dreamer!

As a child I always wanted to wear Faiza Samee on my mehndi. I’ve grown up watching my mom and khala wearing her so it’s something I wanted to wear for one of my functions. Subsequently, Faiza Samee created my mehndi ensemble and I absolutely loved the majestic color play. I opted for a bold look, so at that time, which was 2009, Saba Ansari created just the oompphh that I wanted! Jewellery is from Hasan Javeri, which is super gold but will always be in-vogue.

For my baraat, I decided to go for a traditional look with an elegant touch -something my features and small frame could support, and the well renouned Bunto Kazim made that happen. My make up had to be done by Shamain. I absolutely love her work, and loved the look she did on my baraat. Jewels are from Canary Diamonds Singapore. I was extremely happy with the over all look as it epitomized perfect elegance!

My valima was all about pink (my favorite color). I truly believe that Umer Sayeed’s clothes are pure magic and he proved me right by making me dazzle in this outfit. The entire look was left upon him and it was exactly how I wanted it. Make up for this day was done by Shamain who, once again, out did herself. Our family jeweller in Pakistan Huma jeweller; who also made my moms wedding set, designed my jewellery for my valima.

You’re good enough in conversation to know that the best way to get things out of people isn’t to tell stories, but to ask questions — questions upon questions. That’s your focus on Monday: To get others to talk. Tuesday through Thursday, you won’t be much for conversations, what with money matters stressing you out — heightening your emotions, making you oddly both shy and aggressive. But your sense of balance (and your ATM balance as well) is restored on Friday. An adventure gives shape to Saturday, but Sunday is best spent doing something relaxing and uplifting. Run a bath. With bubbles.

When you walk by a piece of art on Monday — a painting in a lobby, a window display, even a public fountain — allow yourself a moment to take it in. Being receptive to the world is what this week is all about. Tuesday through Thursday, your life is all bold colors and loud noises and intense feelings. It’s thrilling, all this stimuli. You haven’t felt so connected in a while. It’s no wonder you find yourself thinking big on Friday. Philosophy and a sense of possibility figure strongly on Saturday as well, and Sunday is your own twenty-four-hour Age of Enlightenment.

Cupid has descended and, on Monday, you’re walking around with an arrow stuck through you. You wear it well. The only problem with being this smitten is this: You’re not able to get anything done. Work, school, whatever it is — out the window! Tuesday through Thursday, slow down a bit, focus if you can, use your brain instead of your heart. Then, on Friday, go ahead and switch off the brain again and, to quote the song, turn on your heart light. It will be glowing through your shirt all weekend. On Sunday don’t be afraid to talk about how you feel.

Something’s happening at home, and it’s not pretty. It’s not ugly, either — it’s just sort of annoying, on Monday especially. On Tuesday and Wednesday, your frustrations at home may be having an effect on other aspects of your life — which is doubly annoying — and Thursday’s anxieties have something to do with an official document (a new lease?). It isn’t until Friday that you have time to do something for yourself, and do something for yourself you shall! The movies? A meal out? A dip in a pool somewhere? If you have social plans on Saturday or Sunday, you might be happier canceling.

You find a good rhythm on Monday. Your friends are finishing your sentences. If you go on a date, it goes well. It’s remarkable to feel like all your needs are being met. Then you go into the middle of the week — Tuesday through Thursday, basically — and realize that you’re still wanting in the family department. But you’re in a nurturing mood, so douse your family in love and see what happens. Friday and Saturday return you to the ever-pressing matter of your love life, which is unbelievably great right now. On Sunday do something for your health (a swim, for instance).

Be careful of impulse buying on Monday. A discussion about values with a good friend will set you on the right track and, hopefully, dissuade you from splurging on that pair of pants in that store window that, while they seem incredible on display, will just seem like another pair of pants once you buy them. Don’t do it! Midweek, your curiosity leads to some deep intellectual digging that turns up all sorts of interesting, emotional artifacts. On Friday and Saturday, it’s all you can do not to run screaming from every interaction you have with your family. But Sunday is romantic and fun.

You can see both sides of everything. It’s sort of a problem on Monday. Do you want coffee or tea? Are you in love or do you just want to be friends? And so on. Why must life be defined by choices? The great thing about the middle of the week — Tuesday through Thursday — is that everything seems to happen on its own. Certain people are drawn to certain people. What’s meant to happen seems to, with little fiddling on your part. It’s relaxing. On Friday and Saturday, your friends mean everything to you, but don’t let them talk you into buying something you don’t need. Be shrewd Sunday as well.

The things whizzing through your head on Monday are things you’d never talk about with a perfect stranger, but try it. Choose a perfect stranger, someone you have a good feeling about, and let loose. You’ll be amazed. Tuesday through Thursday, you find yourself on a quest to be useful to society in some way — do some volunteering or political activism, or hang something out your window that makes people smile — but Friday you don’t have to exert yourself to feel useful. Your friends make you feel needed in that way only friends can. Spend Saturday around friends too. But on Sunday, work.

Something’s bugging you on Monday, and it has to do with a small amount of money someone owes you. Once you address it, it will stop bugging you. Tuesday through Thursday, you’re wary, for reasons that anyone would understand, of being party to any more financial interactions, especially those that involve money leaving your pocket and going into someone else’s. Friday and Saturday, luck is on your side, but in social situations you’d be wise to consider everything you say before you say it, lest you wind up learning what the heel of your shoe tastes like. But Sunday’s easy.

You and a friend are sitting on a park bench on Monday when it dawns on you that watching people go by is not unlike watching a movie. If only you had popcorn! Decisions don’t come easily right now, but that’s fine with you, what with all the natural entertainment on offer. Tuesday through Thursday is less entertaining, or at least they’re less like the movies and more like the symphony: swelling, enigmatic, and emotional. Friday returns you to the land of friends and park benches, and Saturday you’re happier than you’ve been in ages. On Sunday, write a friend a card. By hand. Just because.

Work is effortless on Monday. Everyone else is moaning about not being in the mood to do this or that, but you’re on the phone and racing up and down in the elevator and, in general, keeping things afloat. You’re the star. Tuesday through Thursday, friends are laying on the attention extra thick — not because they want anything, but just because they like you. Flattering! Friday and Saturday, world domination — once firmly within your grasp — seems a bit harder to attain, but what about a slightly adjusted goal? Something within the land of opportunity? Sunday is a good planning day.
