& UP CLOSE PERSONAL WITH
ENSEMBLE
How and why did you choose to launch your multi brand store, Ensemble? My mother was the driving force behind Carnival de Couture and that brought her into contact with many leading indian designers. One of them being Tarun Tahiliani who became a dear friend - and we would visit India regularly during college. There we saw the concept of multi-brand stores and Shehrnaz got inspired to set up something in Karachi after finishing up college. Retail sector was developing and we wanted a place where women could come and buy designerwear without waiting months for their 38

order to get ready. Instant gratification!! When did you decide to start it? The first store opened its doors in September 2007 in Old Clifton Karachi Why did you choose the name Ensemble? We brainstormed for ages and kept coming back to Ensemble - which is the name of Tarun's multi-brand stores in India, we asked him if we could use it and he was kind enough to agree!
How does Ensemble stand distinguished from other multi brand stores in Pakistan?
Competent sales staff Good in-store ambience Something for every mood and budget Solid after sales service - (alterations - follow up etc)
To be very honest we feel every store has its niche and ensemble tries to do its best in catering to its clientele. What sets us apart is possibly our store network we have 5 stores covering Karachi - Lahore - Dubai and London. We are heading to Islamabad soon and an e-store is coming up within this year so the idea is wherever you are we will provide with A list designers without any hassle and at the same price as Pakistan! So affordable and chic
Since you three run Ensemble together, how is your work relation as opposed to personal relation? Ensemble is our baby - we do not have different personas at work or home. Shehrnaz is the creative one, she comes up with ideas whether it is at home or at work. Shezray works at executing them and Zeba our mother is our absolute go to person for everything!
What are some of the problems you face in this type of business? Regular supply from designers - given that our industry is in its development stages - they too do not have extensive infrastructure so deliveries get delayed, production is off schedule and that is hard especially for retail stores which depend on supply to sell! What do you feel about so many new emerging designers? I think its fantastic and we have been fortunate enough to work with some new labels in the past year who been as successful as some of our masters such as Farah Talib and Farida Hasan. Retail is growing, women are more financially independant and in the mood to spend on themselves then lets say our mothers were so its great however I feel new designers must establish an identity of their own than replicate someone else. Ensemble has a strict policy of not stocking someone who copies another brand. List 5 key things you do to give your clients a good shopping experience Great selection of clothes and accessories
Do you three face any internal conflicts/conflicts of interest or are you three mostly agreeable to each others opinions? Shehrnaz is a perfectionist she likes to do things in a certain way, Ami and I have a can do short cut attitude so there are times when we get told off by the little one! Are you planning on launching another branch of Ensemble? We are always planning - so God willingly there will be a few new projects coming soon! Rapid Fire: Favourite local and international designer Bunto and Oscar de la Renta Favourite holiday destination London it our second home! Favourite perfume Zeba - Poeme by Lancome Shezray - Diorissimo Shehrnaz - Chanel Favourite accessory This season our dior earrings for sure! Your fashion icon Shezray & Shehrnaz - Audrey Heburn all time fav Shehrnaz - Victoria Beckham! Guilty pleasure Shopping! especially as we end up buying for the other two as well! 2014

True to myself and my design aesthetic, I wanted to keep things uncomplicated, tasteful and unforgettable. My bridal look was minimal, yet exquisitely elegant. Inspired by my husband’s favourite colour, a vibrant cherry red, and my own love for Mughal miniature art, I designed the Garnet Fiesta Bridal. I’ve had countless brides come in and order the same outfit, and I think it was because I poured all my love and passion in to that particular bridal look. The Garnet Fiesta Bridal is a cross between the Imperial elegance of Nur Jehan, combined with the playful extravagance of Marie Antoinette. The outfit is fully worked in French knots, starry crystals and delicate kamdani jaal. The intricately detailed Mughal jaroka borders are reminiscent of Shalimar Bagh, thereby paying tribute to my native city of Lahore. I accessorized my bridal ensemble with my grandmother’s antique ruby and emerald jumkas and my trusty engagement ring. A tasteful chignon and natural makeup by Bina Khan Salon completed the look.

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place meet new people and get wiser! Whether you like to travel alone or with stories and experiences. We wanted to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section planes trains and automobiles. Tell us about your favourite or one of your favourite destination spots. Where did you choose to go and why? I always wanted to visit Australia and this year i finally scratched it off my travel bucket list. My cousin was getting married in Gold Coast and i'd just gotten done with school, so there couldn't be a better time to visit my dream destination. During this month-long trip i visited Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney. I fell in love with all three of these gorgeous and vibrant cities, but if i was to pick a favorite i'd choose Melbourne.
travel diaries
Who did you travel with? Was it pre-planned spur of the moment? They say you learn a lot from traveling with people. Tell us the good and bad points of travelling with your travel companions. My amazing dad planned the entire trip, since he's been to Australia before. Everything was planned around my cousin's wedding, since that was the main purpose of our trip. I travelled with my parents, sister and grandmother. Basically this was my big fat family vaca! I was a bit skeptical at first because we were traveling as a family after ages and i'm use to traveling alone or with my friends. Needless to say, this was one of the best and most memorable trips of my life. The only

Finally, any tips? What is the best shopping spots there? If anyone's planning a trip to Australia i'd recommend them I wasn't a fan of Melbourne's shopping because everything explore it as much as they can. Just spend your time eating at was overpriced and from last season. However, I did find different restaurants and visiting different places. Don't waste some really quirky boutiques on Flinders Lane and Chapel you time shopping!! You should probably rent a car to make Street. All the designer boutiques can be found on Collins the most of your trip. Street.

Where did you stay? We had to stay in a hotel in the suburbs because we had to live close to my family. I really wanted to stay at the Crown Hotel in the city. Recommend a hotel or cottage or flat where you did stay or wish to stay next time you go. If you can then please suggest places that are more suitable for people who travel with family and for those who don’t
Food in Australia is beyond amazing, even a Big Mac tastes pretty awesome. Melbourne is a food heaven for foodies and coffee lovers. I went to Hellenic Republic, which is George Calombaris's greek restaurant and it was a great experience. The food is super!! Melbourne has some of the best brunch places. The Hardware Society has the best baked eggs i've ever had. There's always a line up especially during the weekends.

At the beginning of the week you’re like a plant just barely breaking the surface of the ground. The world is heavy. The sun is distant. What with everything on your mind, expect to be unusually introverted. By Wednesday, you’ll be sprouting huge leaves and growing in unforeseen directions. A new friend comes into your life on Thursday, a cute flower, perhaps? On Friday, when a ray of light lands directly on you, make sure you’re looking your best. It’s an exciting weekend for you, but try to stay grounded on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, go wild.
Your emotions and those of others will be all over the map right now. Anything that happens Monday or Tuesday can be safely written off moodiness and sensitivity levels are off the charts. Wednesday and Thursday are more even-keeled days, but money issues figure prominently. (If someone presents you with a grand moneymaking scheme, don’t opt in.) You won’t really feel like yourself until Friday or Saturday. The weekend holds good things for you, although Sunday feels a little off kilter.
You are thinking like a scientist at the start of the week, and your interest in your own emotions is almost clinical. You’re in a logical, observational mode; but, as you know, some things simply can’t be calculated. This is loud and clear on Wednesday and Thursday especially, when you find yourself getting along remarkably well with people you hardly know. Chalk it up to chemistry. On Friday, your relations with others are less smooth for reasons not entirely clear but a great conversation on Sunday sets you on a good course for next week.
If someone asks you what your favorite kind of pie is on Monday or Tuesday, you won’t be able to answer. You like the texture of apple but the flavor of pumpkin. Or whatever. Every decision even a minor one this week expands into a complex set of irreconcilable variables. Midweek has you feeling torn about bigger issues than pie preference. Come Friday, you may feel more like hanging out around the house with a remote control (or a book) in your hand than anything else. You are in a thoughtful mood this weekend. Stay home: You’re happy with a minimum of fanfare.

The easy answer isn’t interesting to you right now. You’d like to know what’s really going on. On Monday and Tuesday you’re in detective mode asking penetrating questions, considering every angle. And on Wednesday, buoyed by all your research, you charge into the world with fresh insights and confidence; no mincing words for you. Thursday is a big day romance-wise, and on Friday your ego is front and center. Try as you might to deflect attention on Saturday, all eyes are on you. Don’t let a personality clash with someone else ruin a rejuvenating Sunday. Be optimistic and forgiving.
Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it’s also the heart of discovery. You are nothing if not curious at the start of the week, and your analytical powers have never been stronger. Your restlessness right now is incredibly useful. Communicate what you’re thinking. On Wednesday and Thursday you’d like to be climbing mountains or testing theorems, but your family has other things in mind. Don’t distress, because you’ll have plenty of personal time on Friday and Saturday. (Although your love life might pull you in other directions.) Sunday is a day of resolutions and new beginnings.
All you can think about is money this week. Obviously you’re thinking about more than money, per se when you get right down to it, you’re thinking about the future but the value of material possessions and striking a balance between generosity and stinginess are very much on your mind. The middle of the week relieves you from this line of thinking by way of a purely fun excursion with a couple of your friends. In the days leading up to Sunday, chances are good that your mind will go to thoughts of the past. But Sunday, once again, your mind’s on the future.
Your energy is bright and powerful these days and on Monday you’re feeling like a new you. You go into the week stronger (and more respected) than you’ve felt in a while. The confidence suits you. Your mind is open to anything, but it might be too open on Wednesday and Thursday when you may find yourself caught up in a crowd mentality, being persuaded to do things you wouldn’t normally do. Friday returns you to a high sense of order and self-control. That’s all well and good, but don’t forget to party Saturday night.

Slowness is a virtue at the start of the week it encourages thoughtfulness, and the more thoughtful you are, the more emotionally exposed you feel. But rest assured that no one but you can tell what’s going on deep in your brain. Wednesday and Thursday will be relatively social days, although strangers won’t surround you, people will surround you you love and trust. Friday is a big day at work and on Saturday you have chores to do around the house. But Sunday, with its relaxing and spontaneous vibe, will be the best day you’ve had in ages.
There are things you’re willing to live with and things you just aren’t. On Monday, you may have to draw a line in the sand. Others may react in funny ways, but your good friends will stand by your side. Tuesday will be an emotionally rocky day after putting your foot down, you may feel pangs of regret (they’ll pass) but Wednesday is a lucky day for you, as is Thursday. Friday and Saturday you’re happiest sharing your good luck with others. This leads to a realization this weekend: You want to do something with your life that helps lots of people. You have big dreams.

Your life is a movie at the outset of the week, but you can’t quite follow the dialogue and the car chases make no sense. And who’s the hero in this flick anyway? If you feel like canceling dinner plans and kicking back in front of the TV, hey, by all means. By Wednesday and Thursday your social calendar’s too packed for TV time, and on Friday and Saturday music and art figure strongly. If someone asks you about your goals, don’t roll your eyes; planning for the future never hurt anyone. In fact, on Sunday, someone might share a goal of his or her own that is so brilliant you’ll consider adding it to your list.
Monday and Tuesday are great days for decision-making, but don’t go on your gut alone. You have a wealth of information to work with. Look at the details. Organize yourself. Wednesday and Thursday, when your plans go into effect, you may feel hesitant or awkward or pessimistic or crazy you’ll be bouncing all over the place emotionally, but stay the course. By Friday you’ll already be reaping the rewards of a path well chosen. People will be complimenting you right and left this weekend. The more modest you are, the more impressive you will be.
