I believe you graduated with a degree in Economics and Government, and then spent a fair amount of time working in the corporate sector. How did you end up in this line of business? Right after college, I worked at Kashf Foundation, a microfinance organsation that works with the less priviledged in urban slums and rural areas. However, I always had a love for ceramics. My grandfather was one of Pakistan’s leading industrialist and entrepreneurs, and I guess that passion for creating innovative products and taking on a manufacturing challenge I have inherited from him. I did not realise this until I started Clayworks. I love manufacturing and creating wealth has my grandfather, Mr. C.M. Latif, used to say. You've been in the market for many years now and have opened stores all over the country. What has your experience been like? It has been a great learning experience for me. Life is about constantly enriching yourself with new skills and knowledge. I have learnt a lot and in retrospect I would do some things differently. I have learnt to be more bold and daring over the years. That is what is being an entrepreneur, taking a risk and working to make it a success. 74

Where do you draw inspiration from? My inspiration is from my roots and my education. I use our art, history and culture from Pakistan, the Islamic world and tribal patterns and cultures. I like reinventing them mixed with modern trends and colours. It’s a fun and exhilarating process. I love design. Can you walk us through the design and production process of a single piece? The process behind each piece is pretty complex and cannot be explained in a short paragraph. Some basic steps are brainstorming the item I want to make and then working out the shape I want it to be. After that comes the dimensions and technical functionality. A lot of thought goes behind how the form and function will fuse together to make the perfect piece. Pattern and colour comes much later when we have a ready item. I either come up with a design and search through our inventory of items to work out which one will the design look best on. Or walking through our stacks of goods in process, I will pick up a piece that inspires me at that moment and create a design or colour scheme for it. What is your favourite creation so far? I have many favourite creations. Sometimes the newest one will appeal to me the most or then I will be digging through images of our past work and suddenly I will have new love for a design we did years ago. My favourite changes every couple of weeks and I love using all my products. Every morning I like drinking from a mug that will suit my current mood, frame of mind and weather. Clayworks is the only female run ceramics factory in the country. In this industry, does being a woman work in your favour? No matter what industry you are in, it is all about hard work. Being a woman does not matter, what matters is how I view my business. You have to take work seriously and be organised about it. For me it is a full time job and I find it amusing when people ask me so do you work daily. I guess they expect that being a woman I go into office once a while and plod around my home or socialise in the day. They would never ask a man that, and that is the difference which bugs me. Of course I work 8 hours a day and 6 times a week often. Being a woman is not what makes the wheel churn, it is how you handle each situation and how professional you are. What is something you've learned the hard way in this industry? That it is a science and not just an art. You need to know your physics, chemistry and techinical drawings. But I like the challenge and enjoy mixing art and science. When I was in school I went to a palmist with some friends and this woman told me I would do something that combines art and science. At that stage in my life I had no clue what she was talking about. Ceramics is a very delicate form of manufacturing and also very hard because 50,000 things can go wrong. It is a natural material and involves some parts of the process that are still manual. But that is what also makes it unique. I like the challenge. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Seeing a new product, design or colour come out of the kiln! You never know how a piece will look after firing. I believe you take on a lot of customized orders. Any crazy client requests? Tons of them. Usually crazy and hilarious love messages. I am privy to the love names people call their husband, boyfriend, wife, girlfriend. But my lips are sealed. What is the most important lesson you've learned as an entrepreneur? Be bold and go where no man or woman has gone before. Dream big and do what is not done before.

karim ahmed khan

The artist evokes the emotional impact of bullying and judgement that begin in childhood, and leaves scars that extend well into adulthood. His series of multisensory work are said to represent the darkest chapter of his life and the role of society in advancing bullying.

rabia ehsan The artist makes the statement that our society is in the middle of a profound cultural crisis and afflicted by the absence of self- acceptance and awareness. A thin, superficial veil of “culture” conceals a harsh reality that whatever lies beneath the surface is borrowed, and imitated from other cultures.

amna gull

In a world overrun by emojis and virtual stickers, the artist wanted to create a diary of her own emotions through this simplifying medium of communication. Emotions that run the gamut are neatly packaged into one visual. Amna also created her own personalized emoticons, “AMNACONS,” to represent a range of deeply personal emotions.

farhat ali Formerly a wall chalker, Farhat used tape in his work to present the idea that while we associate paintings with walls we often forget the simple things that connect them to the wall itself. tape. Art evokes certain responses for different people; to this end the artist switches the responsi bility of semantics and first im pressions; he wants the viewer to relate the title of the painting and then perceive the image.

hoor ahmed Hoor’s thesis was deeply personal; she sought to examine how disease and DNA are intertwined with so much pain passed unwillingly from generation to generation. The blue in her work relates to the flow of water and on a larger scale to the circle of life, signifying hope.

hira siddiqui

karim khushi muhammad Hailing from Hunza, the former pre med student wanted to embed the nature and experience of his childhood into his work. He is inspired by nature broadly but light and “frozen” things especially, and used polyamide flue to capture everyday observances that catch his eye.

Hira challenged the authenticity of inspiration of how work transforms as it moves from the canvas of the master to the canvas of the artist who aims to reproduce a piece or a style that has inspired him or her. Interestingly, she posits these unintentional manipulations to a game of chinese whispers, where the process of artistry results in so many different iterations.

syed hussain A young miniature artist hailing from the Hazara community, the artist raised issues of identity, inclusion and sectarian violence. The helmets represent survival for minorities who live in perpetual fear of being targeted and for whom masking their faces is the only protection available.

muhammad sulaman

Muhammad presented an artistic critique of social materialism. His miniatures were based on the flaws our society fixates on shoes, bags, clothes with a resounding message that materialistic things are not important but the emotions they evoke and inspire are.

mohammad ali

The artist employs bright vibrant color to showcase the “beautiful distractions” inherent in conflict and recurring problems; his art has an optimistic tone, indicating that there is something to admire in even the most difficult internal conflicts, particularly those that shape us and make a mark on our conscience.

moattar rizvi

Moattar uses geometrical patterns to reflect the restrain and suffocation she feels on a daily basis. The superimposition of patterns on natural forms depicted in her work is a critique towards “the mentality” which never allowed her to see things as they truly are. She claims that the world is portrayed by limited patterns, and even flowing, curvilinear lines, or even landscapes for that matter, are restricted by certain patterns.

akif khan

A Charsadda native, Akif wanted to depict human behavior and how it changes and evolves throughout life. He also sought to challenge the accepted functionality of everyday objects; for instance, a brick melded into a tea pot combined his desire to represent home, and the units that build everyday life.

aleena mazhar Aleena focused on light - moon, moths drawn to a flame, x-rays - wherein light indicates the presence and absence of an object. She used a projector to create movement and motion in the artwork.

sana shafiq

Sana based her thesis on the belief that beauty in all its facets - eventually fades. Through the portrayal of wilting leaves, hair, sunflowers -- she wanted the viewer to examine the timelessness of inner beauty and draw their own conclusions.

waqas amjad A Lahore resident inspired by death and regeneration, Waqas subverted ideas of conventionality through objects. He worked with hard materials like fiberglass to make conventionally “soft objects - pillows, cushions, comforters - and frames made of wax.

I always wanted to be a traditional bride on my nikkah so I chose Fahad Hussayn, as there is no one better than him when it comes to making traditional outfits! I wore a hand-woven gold jacket with exquisite traditional embroidery, paired with an eighty kali chiffon ghagra and heavily embellished tissue dupatta with beautiful cutwork, zari and metallic jewels. To further compliment my mothers heirloom jewellery and to complete the traditional old world look I was going for, I wore a second dupatta edged with kirun gota! Maram & Aabroo did a fabulous job with my hair and makeup, and made me feel like royalty on my special day!

Being a bride is possibly one of the most difficult processes one goes through! We plan our wedding day and what we will wear years before the actual wedding. Meticulous planning goes into each look from the colour combinations and embellishment of the outfits to the jewellery, hair and makeup. Here we feature some of our favourite brides and show you what they wore to their special days. Find out what they have to say!

For my reception, I wanted to wear something elegant and timeless. I decided to wear one of Faraz Manan’s breathtaking creations – his bridals really make one feel like a princess! I wore a champagne coloured floor length gown, intricately embellished with crystals and opted for a relatively light dupatta. For my hair and makeup, I chose Ather & Shahzad, as they accentuate facial features without going overboard – they were perfect!

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? My husband & I chose to go to the island of Mahe in Seychelles after our big, fat wedding! It was a great escape after all the wedding madness and our crazy work schedules. The exclusive Seychelles islands, where nature and an unrivaled sense of space and solitude await, was unreal with majestic mountains on one side with stunning beaches and the brilliant blue sea on the other side. It is the perfect getaway to live in a tropical paradise situated in the Indian Ocean! Who did you travel with? I travelled with my husband. We planned our honeymoon so it overlapped with my birthday. I wanted to escape Lahore’s freezing cold weather, and a beach retreat where I cold soak

up the sun so Seychelles was the perfect choice! The bonus being that we didn’t require visas. Where did you stay? We stayed at the Le Meridien Fisherman's Cove; we couldn't have picked a better place! We had a lovely suite with a breathtaking view of the ocean and were just a few steps away from the beach. Since the staff knew it was our honeymoon, they went out of their way to make us feel special. Moreover, even the locals were very warm and welcoming. The stay made our honeymoon memorable indeed! What are the best shopping spots there? Instead of mega shopping malls, you will find some small

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? The Four Seasons spa is an island refuge of well-being and relaxation! I also tried the mountain meditation, which was an incredible journey to preach and self discovery with one of the most stunning views of the Indian Ocean. Finally, any tips? Don't forget to wear sunscreen at all times and be prepared to get tanned! Work out before you go so you can happily show off your toned body in a sexy swimsuit as the beaches and water of Mahe are simply irresistible! Take your nicest pair of sunglasses, a straw hat, beach slippers and beach bag. If you’re scared of lizards be prepared to see them in your room, we would have to call the hotel staff at 4 am to get rid of them!

Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on Visiting all the beautiful beaches on the Mahe island especially the Beau Vallon where we did snorkeling in the beautiful Indian Ocean-what a life time experience it was. Also enjoying the swim at the Interdance Beach and the fantastic view of the TakaMaka Beach. We also rented a private boat heading

Suggest places for a perfect night out? Start your night with the dinner at the Banyan Tree at the Interdance beach. A romantic candle light dinner on the beach with high tides and crab on the beach with soft music playing in the background. You can also try the sushi place at kempenski and the traditional seychelles buffet at the four seasons. After the dinner for a fun night try the two of the hottest nightspots in Seychelles which are La Faya Bar and Tequla Boom, also the Katiolo nightclub is worth visiting if you’re in a mood to party and have some fun.

interesting shops and markets. The most well-known shop in Seychelles is Kenwyn House – the structure of this gem house has considerable historical significance. Compared to the rest of the week, Monday through Wednesday are going to be the days you want to remember. Maybe not days for the history books, but you’re certainly solid-gold happy with the abundance of energy and creativity you sense around you. Or maybe you’re embroiled in professional sports. Anyway, you’re grinning from ear to ear until Thursday — a day of obligations and details. It’s a great day to do something to get fit, though, and a great day for athletic games. This weekend is relatively quiet, which will likely come as a relief.

As you watch the pompous people parade down the street on Monday, you consider them and decide to be tolerant. And anyway, there are times when you have been mistaken about others. In any case, by Tuesday you’ll be spending time around people you know like the back of your hand. People you love. Romance (and caressing in particular) figures into your life on Thursday. And Friday, companionship and attraction remain key themes. The routine of your weekend — especially following such a jam-packed week — seems more fun and stimulating than usual.

You surround yourself with likeminded people, and this week, your crowd is feeling especially cerebral. The conversation shoots into abstract directions and even disagreements, in these settings, are entertaining. A light debate on Tuesday or Wednesday puts you on your toes, and keeps you on your toes for the next few days. Thursday and Friday you are careful and quick, although make sure not to let your face fall into a sour-looking expression if you stare off into space — someone might misread you. This weekend: romance, energy and a ton of new projects.

Why settle for anything less than the biggest and the best? That’s your opinion on Monday. And Tuesday and Wednesday. All big days in the spending department. Make sure you can afford whatever doodad it is you have your heart set on, and then enjoy your indulgence. Thursday is a great day — the lines of communication are strong, you’re feeling social, the brain is working nicely — and you’re happy and relaxed on Friday. Plans and details seem taken care of by the end of the week, but then Saturday comes along and everything goes out the window. Chances are, it will be a frantic weekend.

It may be sweltering outside, but you’re burning up inside, too. With excitement. About everything. Share this incredible warmth of yours with your friends and hug them tight. How you ever got to feeling this goofy is beyond you, but you’re happy to enjoy it. Wednesday is a creative day, but by Thursday everything changes — your mood is still up, but your focus has changed. You’re introverted and thinking financial thoughts. You’ll stay this way for about a day or two — until the weekend, that is, which returns you to hugging your friends, jumping up and down and kissing people enthusiastically.

The underdog has captured your imagination on Monday. You were a fan of someone else, but recent information has led you to change your mind. You have the capacity to be flexible, which is a good quality right now. The only drawback to the flurry of excitement at the beginning of the week is that it will leave you exhausted by Wednesday afternoon. That’s right about the time your week really starts to get good. Thursday and Friday are terrific, top-of-the-summit days. Unfortunately, Saturday brings your fearless streak to an end. Indecision hampers you this weekend, but only somewhat.

For some reason, when there’s a question at the beginning of the week, all heads look to you for the answer. You are tapped into the bigger picture right now, and friends, as well as perfect strangers, can sense it. Tuesday and Wednesday are great days too. The details? Don’t worry about them — you’re operating on a higher plane. Thursday and Friday, show off your talent for listening to others. The way to be social is to ask a lot of questions. This is the kind of weekend when you may find yourself blown away by some incredible art or architecture, and flirting comes into play on Saturday.

A challenge can be invigorating, but on Monday and Tuesday, the challenge you face stresses you out. You almost feel like demonstrating how stressed you are, but that would be flamboyant of you — and flamboyance is not the way to go right now. Watch yourself on Wednesday as well. Thursday returns you to happier waters, and a couple of unexpectedly free hours in the afternoon on Friday give you the time to make plans. Decisions might be tough over the weekend, so the fewer you have to make, the better. Don’t feel like you have to exhaust yourself Saturday night. If the mood strikes you, stay home.

If you are traveling at all Monday through Wednesday, luck is on your side. There’s a first-class upgrade with your name on it. Cheerfulness abounds the first half of the week, which is why Thursday — when a run-in with an authority figure or older family member rattles your cage — will come as such a shock. Friday won’t be a banner day either. But this weekend? This weekend, luck is on your side again. You are back in your comfort zone, and your friends are delighted to see you. Sunday would be a fine time to make your life goals known to a new friend.

Monday might not be the easiest day in the whole world, but don’t take anything to heart. What you’re seeing may not be what’s actually going on. Still, resources are tight, and on Tuesday or Wednesday someone may ask you for your last piece of gum. Whether or not you give it to them is up to you. Connecting with a family member or old friend centers you on Thursday — the telephone is amazing, isn’t it? — and Friday is packed with accomplishments and the resulting pride and good feelings. The weekend sees you thinking nonstop about your career.

A strange contradiction presents itself on Monday; pursue it, and you may stumble upon a discovery. Experiments and extraordinary strides figure into Tuesday and Wednesday as well — you feel a bit like a mad scientist making a series of breakthroughs — but by Thursday you’re more careful, taking care and covering the details. You know as well as anyone that oftentimes things are not as they seem. Keep this in mind on Friday. And this weekend, someone who seems to have little to do with your life will tell you a story you find endlessly fascinating. Amazing what you can learn from other people.

As long as you mind your own business at the beginning of the week, you’ll be spared any unnecessary drama. Not that you mind drama. But you have enough things going on in your own life right now to let yourself be distracted. Keep your mind from wandering, especially on Wednesday. On Thursday, maintaining good relationships is more important than knowing all the facts. Trust your friends. Believe in your gut. On Saturday, a small financial crisis encourages you to collect on an old debt — as well you should. There’s a chance that whoever owes you something merely forgot.
