by seher tareen Brilliant performance piece by Columbian artist Maria José Arjona. Each day the performance and performers would change. Each day a new reenactment of a previously performed piece of another artist was conducted while the original performance was displayed via video. When the crockery toppled over and crashed on the floor, the onlookers experienced the shattering, the shards and the sound in its entirety. It formed an instant and indescribable connection between the artist and the observer.

art dubai ‘HIGH HEELS FOR GOING TO HEAVEN’: Renowned Japanese artist diptyque Kusama, whose career is in its sixth decade, is known for her unique fanatstical style, using a combination of minimalism and pop art techniques. Her larger than life fiberglass sculpture, ‘HIGH HEELS FOR GOING TO HEAVEN’ explores the transcendental themes of life and death, but operates entirely in the whimsical world that she has created.

Pakistani artist Anila Quayyum Agha’s untitled stainless steel installation explores the intersections and boundaries between public and private, light and shadow and static and dynamic. It is the interplay between the experience of exculsion as a woman from public spaces, such as the mosque, and the wonder that is associated with that separation. The changing shadows, lighting and geometric patterns one experienced while walking around the istallation was magical.

How old were you when you first started singing? I’ve been singing ever since I can remember! My very first single was officially released on Music Channel Charts when I was just 16 and had recently moved to Pakistan. Which instruments do you play? Sadly, I don't play any musical instruments. I wish I could magically learn the piano or the guitar because song writing would become a million times easier if I knew how to play an instrument! I have unfortunately never had the patience nor the time to learn, despite buying keyboards and guitars in an attempt to rectify this situation! What was the first tune you learned? I can't really remember the very first tune I memorized but I do remember growing up watching Disney Animations like Sleeping Beauty and Alladin and learning their OSTs! I also grew up watching Amitabh Bachan movies with my Dad who was an ardent lover of Silsila, Naseeb, Don and Amar Albar Anthony! My mother would buy me the soundtracks of Dirty Dancing and albums by MJ and George Micheal! Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? I admire many various types of musicians, starting from the legendary MJ and Madonna to people like Reshma and Abida Parveen. Any person who has had the good fortune of doing work that is close to their heart is very 72

lucky and blessed, and must be respected because art is art. How was your experience at Coke Studio? It was absolutely amazing! Both music producers Rohail and Strings have very different styles of working while being extremely professional, talented and dedicated to music. I am blessed that I have been invited to join both teams and for the opportunity to pay tribute to legendary folk and Sufi songs in my own style. What was your experience like working across the border? Indians are extremely professional and punctual. Their lives revolved around their jobs! It's very refreshing to know that such dedicated people exist in the art world and the creative industries. I'm very excited and happy that our film industry is also growing now. Fingers crossed that it puts us on the map for something respected and positive as a nation. How do you handle mistakes during a performance? I'm a perfectionist so mistakes bother me a lot! Even though I handle them (hopefully) very organically and naturally, especially if

the band or the sound guy has done a blunder, but afterwards I do ruminate on it and make sure it doesn't happen again. Any crazy fan stories? A weird maulvi once made a statement or "fatwa" in a small Urdu newspaper that if I don't marry him I will die within two weeks! I even have the clipping because a friend of mine was so amused when she read it that she actually sent it to me! About a month later I came on televison and said "See, I'm dead! This is my ghost doing the interview!". I was extremely entertained! What advice would you give to aspiring musicians? Stick to your principles. Be sincere and dedicated. And never forget - what goes up, must come down. Stay humble! I wish all the luck in the world for your success. Ameen. What's next for you? I am doing another song in a couple of months, some gigs in the UAE and a tour in the USA! I am also starring in a small art film can't tell you much more so stay tuned ;)

No one brings old school embroidery to life better than Bunto Kazmi. Staying away from a typical red outfit, she gave me a beautiful detailed coral shirt and paired it with a heavily worked green and pink farshi gharara and a traditional deep red dupatta! Since my outfit had ganga jamni work all over, I paired it with diamond jewellery to add a slightly contemporary twist. Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I went to Barcelona, Spain and Mykonos, Greek island. The trip was basically to celebrate the birthday of my best friend Hassan Sheheryar Yasin. Who did you travel with? I travelled with Hassan Sheheryar Yasin since he has a passion for traveling. For a person like myself being a first timer, he guided me extremely well about the whereabouts and must-see sights etc. He was basically my tour guide!

travel diaries

Where did you stay? In Mykonos I Stayed along the coast. I love the beach since it’s super serene and being woken up with the sounds of the in the morning was super, even the thought of it still makes me want to go back. Moreover, watching the sunset at the end of each day was a mesmerizing sight! What are the best shopping spots there? I'm not a big shopaholic. But the market next to where I was lodging was so beautiful ,colorful and

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? My personal favorite was Namoz, which was situated on the beach. Then the Greek cuisine is a definite must-go place to dine at,since it is necessary for a visitor to try the authentic greek food on their stay. However, Hotel Tavocavo’s restaurant, which is not only famous for its delicious food but the restaurant itself was amazing having a fantastic view of the infinity sea. The restaurants had Superb food, great ambiance and excellent service with super friendly and well-cooperative staff. Basically, I really enjoyed my dining experiences since I’m a big foodie!

What can you do to relax and unwind? Take long walks on the beach, because there is nothing more relaxing than walking by the beach with waves touching your feet as you walk. Also, sun bathe on the sand ( forget about the tan, it will eventually go!) and most importantly eat good food, smile and be happy since you got to travel to such a beautiful island.

Tell us something about the sights no one should miss out on? In Barcelona, Goudy church is one beautifully constructed church and is so well-maintained. A sight which everyone must see atleast once when in town. The detailed church was truly worth exploring!

Monday and Tuesday are ‘watching the paint dry’ days: slow, meditative, odd. Lift your gaze from your navel as necessary, but don’t expect to be shaken out of this state until Wednesday. The start of the week, in a way, is like the slowly ticking buildup to a roller coaster’s highest drop, and Wednesday is the exhilarating beginning of a three-day-long rush. You’re in the front car of the coaster, but each turn still surprises you. This weekend, the ride might change, but you never actually slow down. Your friends and your career figure strongly.

Things couldn’t be richer than they are on Monday and Tuesday. When did your life become a soap opera? And who would’ve thought you’d be traipsing around in a Groucho Marx disguise? The passion and intrigue deflate a bit by Wednesday -- thank goodness -- but it still takes some effort to be philosophical about everything afoot. Thursday and Friday, don’t be too righteous (why insist that you’re correct when you’re merely pretty sure?) and avoid any tantalizing risks. Saturday and Sunday, getting out of town may be in the stars. Brilliant idea.

Like a miner walking into a tunnel with a headlamp on, you keep coming across fascinating, glittering things. When you let yourself fully explore something you’re interested in, you also discover a lot about yourself. A partner joins arms with you on Wednesday and sticks by your side through Thursday and Friday -- not that sticking by your side is hard, what with all the fun you’re having. But, gosh, it’s more fun with company. This weekend, after such a socially copacetic week, your interactions with other people are awkward. Encourage your friends to be honest about what’s bugging them.

The ups and downs on Monday and Tuesday are enough to make your stomach feel funny. The challenge, in spite of what you’re feeling, is to remain alert to the details, especially in regard to legal documents, which are hard to change. Wednesday through Friday offer you, gloriously, plenty of time to relax, while ambient music plays in the background. Though that won’t solve the conundrums you’re facing, it will certainly make contemplating life’s complexities more enjoyable. Saturday and Sunday, if you don’t feel like going out, don’t.

What’s apparent to everyone, what’s happening on the surface, doesn’t exactly add up on Monday and Tuesday. Because you have reason to suspect something weird is afoot, either in your family life or your work life, you’re on guard. By Wednesday, though, the weirdness sorts itself out or (even better) becomes irrelevant, and the part of your brain that was focused on warding things off concentrates instead on drawing someone close (possibly a romantic interest). Oh, happy day! The romance theme persists through Friday. Your weekend is about helping others.

The secret to becoming brilliant in a certain field is never to be embarrassed about what a dork the subject turns you into. Monday and Tuesday, devote your mind to what you love. If that’s quantum physics, by all means, wear your quantum physics nerdiness proudly. Talk about nothing else. If only you could give over the whole week to what you care about! A family obligation gets in the way of that on Wednesday, and a host of responsibilities frustratingly distracts you on Thursday and Friday. But this weekend? This weekend can be quantum physics all day, if that’s what you want. Ambition is good.

You’re constantly reaching into your pocket on Monday, in a way that makes you nervous. Where is all of your money going? Can the leak in this dam be plugged? Yes, it can, and on Tuesday, you set about doing just that. A finger plugging the hole isn’t going to cut it. It’s time to consider anew what you value. Wednesday through Friday is a wonderful, happy period -- you’ve found a way to express yourself, and it’s liberating. But this weekend, you’re beset by a case of bluesy nostalgia. Try to avoid your more domineering acquaintances.

You feel, on Monday and Tuesday, like a baby chick just breaking out of an egg. You’re at the edge of a whole new world. The exact nature of this rebirth is unclear, but it’s safe to say that it produces a vertiginous feeling in you on Wednesday. Though you’re not rudderless, this odd sensation makes you feel as if you’re wandering aimlessly. Then, on Thursday and Friday, you’re especially susceptible to other people’s crazy ideas. You begin to sort out what it all means this weekend. Make plans, and then take steps toward implementing them.

Your dreams are a major preoccupation on Monday and Tuesday, but rather than thinking of them as a distraction from the narrative of your life, imagine them to be enriching, valuable and instructive. An extremely active subconscious is in the stars for you, as is the desire to be alone. That works out beautifully, because Wednesday through Friday, you’re the polar opposite of alone: You have to hold your hands above your head because so many people are crowding around you. On Saturday and Sunday, strive to let your creative impulses take priority.

Not only are you on good terms with all of your friends, you’re in a good position professionally and financially. From where you stand, you can see a great future ahead of you. Monday and Tuesday are good days to make major decisions. Then comes Wednesday, which is the beginning of full-tilt madness. Your mind is racing, and discipline, which is absolutely necessary, doesn’t come easily. Expect this to last until Friday. The weekend returns you to that ‘standing on a hilltop’ mood. You’ll have the stamina and drive to achieve what you want.

You’re in first gear all day Monday and well into Tuesday. A connection to your deeper self is slowing you down, mostly because it’s making you feel a bit vulnerable, although there’s no reason why it should. It might be helpful to do something socially useful. Wednesday through Friday, the anxiety drops away, and what you’re left with is a beautiful sense of your own talents and goals. Plus, it just so happens that you’re in a crowd of people who would be happy to discuss these things with you. This weekend, however, it’s back to first gear. That’s totally normal.

Rather than swim into dark waters where sharks could be lurking beyond your field of vision, how about opting for the kiddie pool on Monday and Tuesday? Stick to what you know. This whole week requires your attention and focus -- Wednesday through Friday, a difference of opinion is not the end of the world, it’s just an opportunity to articulate your way of looking at something. However, this weekend is easy. A friend does a favor for you that you barely have to ask for, which demonstrates both their virtues and yours.
