Tucked away in a cosy townhouse in Clifton, Izedeyar Setna’s dimly lit studio was the perfect setting, complete with Coldplay playing in the background, for us to get talking.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. My name is Izdeyar. I used to study in Karachi Grammar School and left Pakistan when I was nine. I went to a boarding school in England for about seven years, came back to Karachi for a bit, attended City School, and then left for Boston. I’ve lived abroad most of my life. I moved back to Karachi for my friends and family! What first drew you to photography? After taking a short course at Oxford University, my professor encouraged me to never put my camera away and to pursue my talent! He saw something in me that no one else ever had! I had never really worked before that and even owned a crappy camera, but I didn’t give up. - that’s how it all started!

Former President Pervez Musharraf

Do you do any fashion photography? I used to do fashion photography in Boston but I got really spoilt there. Everything there was so elaborate - beautiful clothes, beautiful women so when I came to Pakistan, I did work with a few designers initially but then I was bored. If I feel inspired with fashion again, I will definitely take it up! At the moment I’m content photographing people! Do you take photographs for yourself or for others? Definitely for myself. I don’t mind taking suggestions initially but after that I like to be left alone. I’ve been lucky though and have had clients who have left me have my way! With all the phone photo culture and selfies and Instagram, is it killing the quality of photos? No no! It’s fun. Photography doesn’t need to be serious!

Izdeyar Setna with her highness- Sultana of Pahang.

Do you think good photos can ever come out of a random moment or photograph? Absolutely! You’re just lucky to be at the right place at the right time. What cliches in photography do you steer yourself away from? I don’t like things to be posy. I like things to be relaxed, natural and not very stylised. It shouldn’t look like you’re trying to hard- I like simplicity. Who are your favourite photographers local and international? Most of my favourite photographers are international, just because I’m better acquainted with their work! My favourite international photographers are Richard Avedon, Albert Watson, Helmut Newton, I could go on… Unfortunately, I haven’t seen much work of our photographers work here. Do you think you take great photographs? I take GOOD photographs, yes, but I want to take great photographs! Have you ever thought about teaching photography? To be honest, it’s not in my personality! I don’t really have theories - I’m a more practical person! It’s also a big responsibility- I can of course share my knowledge and allow

I tried my luck again and pointed to a corner asking him if I can take a picture there, to which he again replied, “No you can’t take a picture there.” So I had literally one shot to take this photograph. 2015

8 beauty essentials to pack

Whether you’re taking a roadtrip, flying to another city or jetting halfway across the world, there’s no question that travelling is stressful. What’s even more stressful is to look good while travelling! Hair and Beauty Expert, Director Depilex Redah Misbah shares with us the essential hair and beauty products that will help you look your best on your next trip!

1 HAIR AND NOW

The most frustrating part of packing travel basics was never being able to find the products I needed in travel sizes! For many years, I resorted to emptying shampoo and conditioner into tiny 100ml bottles till I discovered label.m travel sized (60ml!) products! The honey and oat shampoo and conditioner is my go to cleanse and conditioner for all seasons, the volume mousse is perfect for enhancing natural waves or doing a quick voluminous blowdry and the one product I can’t live without is the label.m dry shampoo! It’s a quick fix for greasy hair and the perfect styling product for an updo.

2 zit zapper

You know that surprise zit that never fails to disappoint and surfaces on your birthday, New Years Eve and friends weddings? Well for me it almost always pays a visit when I’m travelling! For those days the ‘Boo Boo Zit Zapper by Benefit’ is my best friend. It purifies and dries out blemishes along with getting rid of acne related swelling and redness. It’s perfect size makes it very easy to carry and re-apply till the problem is sorted!

Tangle Teezer

This compact miracle brush lives in my bag regardless of whether I’m on vacation or not! The tangle teezer effortlessly brushes through hair without breaking, pulling or damaging them and can be used on wet or dry hair. So whether you’re on a beach or on a mountain peak, these brushes will detangle your hair with care!

4 The eight hour cream The eight hour cream by Elizabeth Arden is an all purpose balm- my favourite way to use it is as a mask to hydrate and moisturize skin! It can also be used used to cure sunburns, soothe and restore chapped lips, elbows or knees and is a great product to use after hair removal!

6

nail it

5 The

sun block

I went on a crazy hunt to find the perfect suncare range and finally came upon Guinot’s sun protect range which is easy to travel with and serves the purpose. Guinot’s UV Defense High Protection Sun Spray is SPF 30 and easy to apply, the Anti UV stick SPF 50 can be used to touch up after application and the After Sun Moisturizer is amazing to use on exposed skin!

It’s such a bummer when you get your nails done before travelling and soon after the nail colour starts chipping away! To save myself the hassle, I get gel nail colour applied which lasts two weeks without chipping. My top gel nail product is Gelish. The variety of colours is to die for and they really do last weeks before chipping!

7

The perfume For most of my my life, I've lugged around a bottle of perfume in my handbag! The weight of this bottle, even a small sized ones, is pretty sufficient, especially when travelling! Much to my misfortune, I’ve also had to hand over my perfume to the Airport Staff on many occasions due to the carrying liquids onboard rule! Last year, I came upon 'Travalo' at an airport’s Duty Free shop, and literally did the victory dance in the middle of the store! Travalo is a pocket size refillable spray bottle that you can fill directly from a perfume spray without any spills and its approved for travelling on airlines!

8

make-up essentials : When you’re traveling you need products that are lightweight and double duty like Body Shop’s Lip and Cheek stain, a press powder to keep your look dewy (I recommend MM Makeup’s Silk Press Powder), a longlasting no smudge mascara (Estee Lauder Double Wear never disappoints!) and lastly, never neglect your eyebrows! My favorite brow kit these days is the Too Face Bulletproof Brows kit

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I went to Bali a few months ago for my honeymoon. I like to consider myself a relatively well-travelled person, but Bali actually blew my mind. We picked it randomly because I wanted to go to a place where there was a lot of culture, a lot of jungle and, ofcourse, picturesque opportunities. Who did you travel with? I went there with my husband (obviously, on our honeymoon lol). As luck has it, he also loves taking pictures. One of the best parts about travelling to a place like Bali with him was that while I’d photograph everything in sight, he’d photograph me! Haha so by the end of the trip I had archives of new profile pictures. I didn’t even take any selfies because I had my very own photographer follow me around. .

travel diaries

Where did you stay? We wanted to get the feel of Bali from two different perspectives. First we stayed on the beach at the Oberoi in Seminyak. which was stunning. Gorgeous private beaches, the fluffiest clouds and great staff. I loved the location as well; Seminyak was more upscale than other parts of Bali with great restaurants and designer boutiques. For our second perspective, we stayed in the middle of the jungle in Ubud at the Royal Pita Maha. I can’t really explain how incredible a resort this was, but just know that each villa has a private infinity pool that looks off into the jungle. SO GORGEOUS – minus the occasional lizard sighting. There was a third perspective too, but it was a bit too student party crowd for our liking. For those interested in that sort of thing you could stay on Kuta beach. What is the best shopping spots there?

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? We were explorers, so we barely relaxed but The Royal Pita Maha is the place/hotel to do so. Never ever been to a more calming resort. Also, Balinese massages are great. Finally, any tips? Balinese are good with English, so we didn’t experience any language barriers as such. You have to pay tax at the airport to get in AND get out, so make sure you have some cash on you. Oh and “thankyou” in Bali is “terima kesi” hahah – had fun with that.

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on - White water rafting: such a fun experience. You literally go rafting down rapids surrounded by the greenest you will ever see our world! The beauty can’t even be captured in a picture. - Bali Bird Park/Reptile Park: I love these sorts of places, again minus the lizards, but its good to face one’s fears from time to time. As scared as I am, the reptile bit was definitely cooler, but in the bird park they let you hold all sorts of flying creatures. That’s pretty

Suggest places for a perfect night out. Seminyak “High Street” is pretty happening at night. As is, ofcourse, Kuta Beach. All the Australian tourists come to party in Kuta, so its quite loud and never dull. But I think the best is making use of the stunning beaches, even at night. Sitting on clean sand, low light and the sound of the ocean. That’s something we’re starved for, even in Karachi.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? “Bridges” in Ubud was great; delicious food and pretty atmosphere. “Swept Away at the Samaya” was a restaurant within a hotel with the most beautiful view. You sit perched up while the Ayung river flows beneath you. Make sure you go when its not yet night, so that you can still make out how pretty everything looks. “Melting Wok Warung” in Ubud was definiteily one of my favourites. Its in a quiet street where you sit elevated on these tables and eat incredible local food with a European twist as the owner is European. The atmosphere is perfect. If you’ve just had enough of Asian food, then Wacko Burger Café is beyond. I’m not one for fastfood ever, and I’ve never been a big burger person, but these were incredible.

scary too, but still…the experience! - Monkey Forest: You can feed the monkeys and take pictures with them - Bali Rice Terraces: Its so Far East, you cant miss out on this. - Temples: Tanah Lot Temple was beautiful, you see the waves crash against this rock you stand on. Stunning. - Generally walking around exploring pretty places and you’ll happen upon adorable streets, beautiful fisheries and walkways, cute little houses, which are all essentially temples, and statues everywhere.

I didn’t really go to Bali for shopping. I find it a bit silly wasting time in luxury stores that you could visit in more accessible places of the world. But I did pick up a few of their beautiful batik silk dresses. They’re sold everywhere, super cheap, look gorgeous, and theyre a free-size! If there was one thing I wish I COULD have taken home, it would be some of the art sold in the Seminyak boutiques. The world’s greatest artists seem to have all moved to Bali to sell their work, and its beyond impressive.

Monday and Tuesday, just about anything that can go wrong will. It takes all your energy just to feel comfortable among a group of people. And your new shoes aren’t fitting right. Wednesday and Thursday see you taking action and not letting anyone get in your way. If those shoes still hurt, by all means return them. If you’re still uncomfortable socially, find a new social group. Friday and Saturday are career-oriented: Everything you do has an effect on your reputation. Sunday you’re surrounded by like-minded people and filled with optimistic thinking about the future.

Monday and Tuesday are beset by all-consuming passion. It isn’t a fun sort of passion -- not artistic or musical or anything like that -- it’s emotional. The outside world is almost distorted by the strength of your feelings. You go into Wednesday and Thursday understandably wary of other people. The key is to not let that wariness transform into what may appear as righteousness. That’s no way to charm someone. Friday and Saturday, something that’s dogged your understanding for a while suddenly makes sense. Until Sunday, that is. Nothing makes sense on Sunday.

Think of yourself as a space exploration vehicle on Monday and Tuesday, wandering into unknown territory, snapping pictures -- and not making any kind of judgment, just collecting facts. Let someone else figure out what it all means. Wednesday and Thursday you’re more engaged intellectually, but you still aren’t putting your hands on your hips and telling people what to think. That attitude’s just not interesting to you right now. Friday and Saturday, the shifting breeze is sending you in one direction after another, but on Sunday your feet are firmly planted and your attention is unswayable.

You have one foot in one camp and one foot in another. Where does your allegiance lie? What do you need most at this moment? On Monday and Tuesday, if at all possible, put off making any decisions. Wednesday through Friday, you’re just as torn. About everything. Though canceling your evening plans and cozying up in front of a DVD on Friday night sounds, perhaps, lazy, it is also wise. This is just not the week -- or the weekend -- to dazzle people in social settings. (If you find yourself in such a setting, expect to be wildly misinterpreted.) On Sunday, money is on your mind.

Time to haul out the magnifying glass and take a closer look. What you’re looking at on Monday and Tuesday isn’t entirely clear, but allow yourself to hold some unknown variables in your head; it will be a while before this puzzle coheres. Wednesday and Thursday, amplification in the romantic realm intensifies everything else -- which is exactly what you’re in the mood for: more, better, richer, sweeter. Knowing exactly what you want grants you a confidence on Friday and Saturday that some might be threatened by. On Sunday, strike a minor chord. Show off your infamous reserve.

There are so many ways of seeing something -- as the opinions of your friends so amply demonstrate on Monday and Tuesday. Instead of coming down hard on those you disagree with (which is something you have been known to do), listen. Think of yourself as a pair of giant cartoon ears. Wednesday and Thursday, you are pretty sure you know how things should be done, but, again, adopt a passive role and let someone else shoulder the burden. (Your shoulders have been taking the brunt of it lately.) Friday and Saturday, all tension melts when you lock lips with someone. Sunday is revelatory.

You sweep your arms across the table on Monday and draw all your money and possessions toward your chest. Tuesday you spend counting your chips. How can this be explained, this weird urge toward materialism? It’d be good for you to give something away. Then, on Wednesday and Thursday, be generous in other ways: be emotionally giving, insist on hearing the long versions of stories. Friday and Saturday may have you shuffling your feet and casting your eyes downward -- you’re lost in thought about something that happened a while ago -- but Sunday is nothing short of sensational.

Your radiance is a little hard for everyone else to take on Monday and Tuesday. You walk into a room and everyone else looks slightly less magical. It’s as if you pull all cosmic energy toward you, though it’s not like you’re doing it on purpose. Wednesday and Thursday, you become a beneficiary of the very excitement you help generate; you become wrapped up in an activity you wouldn’t involve yourself in if you were alone. Friday and Saturday are less wild, days of calculations and self-control; likewise, the extent of excitement on Sunday consists of rearranging the furniture in the living room.

You are like a cartoon giant walking through a cartoon forest on Monday and Tuesday -- an imaginative Goliath who’s sometimes in the mood to be alone. You have a beautiful vision for the future, but it’s all so overwhelming and vague that you wouldn’t be able to explain it to anyone. Yet. Wednesday and Thursday, a new friendship seems to be taking off, and you might try filling this other person in on what you’ve been thinking about. Friday and Saturday you stick close to the path you know well, but Sunday finds you daringly introducing yourself to a stranger.

All the information is lined up and in order, clear as day -- all you have to do at this point is make the call. Obviously, it’d be smart not to make it alone. Ask others what they think. Then detach yourself emotionally from the proceedings and decide. Once a course has been decided, Wednesday commences a blur that extends into the foreseeable future, a blur of speed and productivity and brightness. Discipline is important on Thursday -- you may begin to have second thoughts, but ignore them -- and modesty is important on Friday and Saturday. The weekend is a chorus of praise.

What with your career on the rocks -- or, at least, not moving at quite the pace you’d like -- on Monday and Tuesday, spend the start of the week doing something socially useful; make phone calls, help out at a community center. Wednesday and Thursday, you’re feeling fortunate to find yourself in a group of people who agree with you on almost every issue, you come up with an excuse that would put you all in touch a lot more often. Friday and Saturday offer little in the way of satisfaction or reward, but Sunday is the opposite. Sunday is unbelievable.

It’s hard to tell the difference between what’s going on in your head and what’s going on in the outside world on Monday and Tuesday. The thing is, the outside world is just confusing. Wednesday and Thursday, a move toward simplicity is in the stars. You, a clean kitchen, some music, some leftovers, a magazine -- that’s an entire evening right there. Friday and Saturday, too, are modest in scope. Let the direction of your evenings be guided by the people involved. No one wants a tight schedule. On Sunday, you ask a sage friend for advice. It’s good, strong advice, and it sends you reeling.
