His photographs are powerful and speak in volumes to us. They’re not just photos but have strokes of shades and moods that reveal the mind of this artist. Fatima Rizvi talks to the man behind the lens, Mehlum S. Sadriwala, and finds out about his deep love for portraits and his passion for photography.

the perceptive photographer mehlum s. sadriwala

Tell us about the man behind the lens. Well, I’m a normal guy with a camera trying to capture the world and his surroundings. I’m someone who makes visual notes each day and wants people to see the world as I see it. I believe strongly that every person has some sort of talent and when it comes to me, I would believe that I can see the most beautiful of every situation. I remember once shooting a garbage area and making it look pleasing. Photography comes naturally to me. I always wanted to draw and paint but I couldn’t even manage to draw stick figures! Luckily, I was then introduced to a digital camera and since then I have never looked back. I still treat my pictures as if I am creating something with keeping intact to the real world. Just giving it my touch calling it the Sadriwala touch- making everything just a tad bit special! Do you have any philosophy for photography? I was not technically trained in photography as I never took a photography course but it actually helped me initially because for me it was a plain canvas with no rules and no rights or wrongs. I just did as it would please my eyes and aesthetics. I treat my photographs as paintings; I 2017

want people to stop and look at them and not treat them as just one more digital photograph but instead a work of art, patience and hard work. By calling them paintings, I do not mean literally but the respect that a viewer has for the paintings. Wedding projects or fashion projects, what and why do you enjoy doing more? Both!! It’s like asking a parent to choose his favorite child! I have one more child that I love: travel photography! What has been the most challenging assignment for you so far? I make sure I know what I’m getting into while choosing my assignments. I always have a backup plan! But one of my most difficult shoots has to be this textile mill that we shot for almost 12 hours with no break. It was the hottest day and cherry-on- top was the noise of those monstrous machines! What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? Not to over stress and to believe in my work. I didn’t know anyone in the creative industry and thought it would be difficult for me to get good assignments but Allhumdolliah It has been a great journey and I would not have had it any other way. You like to take portraits especially. What is it about taking portraits that intrigues you? Portraits are my favorite thing to do as a photographer! I believe the process of taking portraits is spiritual to me as it gives permission to photograph the identity and glance into the soul. Portraits are not only special for the photographer but also for the person being photographed. Hence, I take clicking portraits seriously and each time I click, I feel blessed that people allow me to do that.

with the most beautiful eyes staring at the houses in front of him. He invited me to sit with him and I remember he pointed at the other side of the river and shared with me that it was his brother’s village in India. They lived only 5 minutes apart but had not met in 45 years. To me, stories behind such photographs make all the hard work seem worthwhile. How do you get the person, place or object on the camera just the way you want? I never stage my subjects but move around them and shoot. I believe in the feel of a photograph that cannot be explained by a technical explanation! That feel of a photograph is created between the photographer and the subject. What motivates you to continue taking pictures? Photography just makes me happy. It’s the only thing I know how to do. Often, while travelling alone, I’m asked if I don’t get bored and my answer is no because I have my camera with me. Photography is something I cherish; it’s almost like having a super power. Who would not want to use his super power every day? Where do you see yourself in next five years? That you’ll have to wait and find out but for sure enjoying my work! I don’t want to become one of those commercial photographers who end up becoming business men. I want to have a good balance by making sure that I do good projects, learn new stuff, travel the world, meet new people and share my experiences with everyone.

Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why? It has to be all of my travel portraits from my trip to Kashmir & Yemen. I feel pride in those photographs as I ensured that I would take one portrait a day of someone that I chit chat with and who allowed. The photographs I have from Yemen are precious to me because, sadly, Yemen was attacked shortly after my arrival back home. In Kashmir, I met an old man sitting at the bank of a river 2017

1. the kindness that she has in her heart. I've known her since I was 4 that is one thing that hasn't changed one bit. she'll speak to you with respect and politeness regardless of any circumstances. I love that most probably because it's a quality I'd like to possess too. 2. it goes without saying, her sense of fashion! guys, if there's a real serena van der woodsen somewhere in the world, it's shahrose. 3. her laughter. Not the casual chuckle that you might hear from her in a normal conversation but this spirited laughter she lets out when something is really funny. I love that--it makes me laugh along too. 4. her confidence. Shahrose is among the only few people I know who can carry themselves and communicate in a manner that truly reveals that they believe in themselves. 5. her dancing skills! Shahrose is an excellent dancer who surely dances like no one's watching, that too like a pro!

1. sometimes she gets overwhelmed and stress. that is true for most people, but her reasons are often irrational. there's no point in trying to get out of a maze that doesn't even exist. 2. uncertainty. Ugh. 'Shahrose, are you coming over today?' 'umm..not sure, probably'. that's the response you'll get to most questions, so you don't really know what's up. 3. her tendency to always see the good in people and trust people 4. mood swings. 5. she has the biggest sweet tooth but won't admit it! She'll eye desserts and resist only to eat uncontrollably later on.

1. even if we haven't spoken for months I can pick up my phone and call her with any problem or favour and continue a conversation without feeling awkward. She's always there! 2. her intellectual side and interest in public speaking and rhetoric. Since the time I can remember she always helped with my student council speeches and read over and edited anything I wrote! her ability to convey and illustrate the speech she presented at our high school graduation was an example. She's smart and intelligent! 3. the fact that we can have discussions that entail subjects from poetry to politics to psychology to celebrities and fashion. We're able to educate eachother! 4. she's into fitness and healthy eating but at the same time enjoys her food when she has too. keeps a balanced lifestyle. 5. she's talented and her creativity extends beyond imagination and is a secret artist

1. the fact that she be too blunt sometimes and she may offend the other person. 2. she isn't scared of anyone. Which also means that sometimes she doesn't listen to useful advice given to her for her own benefit. 3. she's impulsive. She started off with wanting to become an artist, later deciding on becoming a doctor and actually ending up as a lawyer who wants to write novels rather than practicing. 4. she takes a while to open up and socialising with ppl isn't her favourite hobby she'd rather watch movies in bed than chill with a bunch of people 5. she thinks a lot and sometimes is just a ticking time bomb. She thinks about unrealistic scenarios that may never happen.

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? In comparison with the famous trio of Rome, Florence & Venice, the city of Milan is an unsung destination which is overlooked by tourists as they tend to underestimate the city's inspiring architecture , world-class shopping experience and the bustling confident vibe that puts one in awe. My love for Leonardo’s Da Vinci's art and dream of photographing Duomo di Milano led me to Milan,. Who did you travel with? I explored the city with my constant travel buddy ( my sister) and my bestfriend Miah! Where did you stay? We decided to stay at a Student Hostel ( New Generation Urban Hostel Brera), the hostel was placed in the heart of the city and was cheaper than a Cosa Nostra meal.

travel diaries

What are the best shopping spots there? Milan is one of the shopping capitals of Europe therefor its perfect for shopping! From designer stores and boutiques to outlets and from expensive to affordable, you will find everything in Milan! You should definitely visit Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. What is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, you ask? It’s a covered shopping mall, if you can imagine a mall that is part Saks 5th Avenue and part Vatican, with a lot of glass, steel and nice restaurants thrown in. This is where you’ll find big name designers like Prada and Louis Vuitton and plenty of cafes to rest your weary feet. But don’t spend too much energy shopping here, because the most famous shopping streets in Milan are yet to come. Brera is filled with the finest boutiques and Corso Como is the heaven of best outlets providing you with afforadable for all designer clothes. Via Montenapoleone is the high fashion area of Milan where you will find shops like Sandro!

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Milan is a vibrant city with an exquisite architecture. In order to unwind and make the most out of your trip, it's best if you rent a bicycle and explore the streets of the city on wheels. Elegance, class and entertainment run through every street of Milan, from cycling around the Duomo to exploring Brera's breathtaking beauty there is nothing you should miss out on. And is there a better place to unwind than a city swarmed with gelato and pizza? Finally, any tips? Make sure your street style is on point for this city, its home to a number fashion bloggers and celebrities. Your Prada bag won't go around being unnoticed in this fashion hub! And more importantly, make sure you book in advance to see leonardo da vinci masterpiece ' The Last Supper' as the queue's are long and there is way too much to explore in this city.

Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on Milan is a city with canals just like Venice or Amsterdam, however, many travelers visit and never even set foot in the Navigli (or Canal) district, which is becoming more and more hip each day. This area of town is easily accessible from the city center by tram, metro (Milano Porto Genova on the green line is the closest stop), bike or on foot. There are often markets set up along the canals and you can wander in and out of the many vintage and artisan shops, one-of-a-kind boutiques, coffee joints, gelato spots and restaurants. On the other hand Milan's magnificent Gothic cathedral is the third biggest church in Europe (after St Peter's in Rome and the cathedral of Seville) and sublimely dominates both the great piazza on which it is located and the city of which it has long been the centre.

Suggest places for a perfect night out How can the city of glamour not have an amazing nightlife? Corso Como is home to the city’s most exclusive and expensive clubs, where mere mortals can mingle with models and football stars provided their attire passes the judgment of the big man with the earpiece and clipboard. Dozens of small bars with big (and inexpensive) aperitivo buffets line the canals of the Navigli area, drawing students and young people to the neighborhood in droves.

travel diaries

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Who doesn't love Italian food? Milan is a wonder when it comes to forking out, the city has a beautiful selection of traditional and modern cusine which can satisfy any palate. Start by sampling hearty meats and flavorful cheeses at Eataly Milano Smeraldo, a modern gourmet located in the popular Corso Como district. If it's pizza you crave, Da Rita e Antonio offers a more traditional Italian dining experience with home cooked flavors whereas DRY has more creative options like its pizza margarita. Da Giacomo will blow you away with procey but delicious seafood offerings ( try the mussels).

Don't worry about the rumors. Yes, the powers that be may be thinking of making some big changes, but they have their eye on you for some bigger and better things. You've been a hard worker for as long as you've been there, and fortunately, you've been in the mood to work even harder over the past few weeks. You'll be very glad you did, very soon.

Romance could well be on the agenda for you now, but there may be a few roadblocks along the way. Of course, roadblocks are only impassable if you refuse to work your way around them. If you're really interested in this person, you won't let anything separate you. Not what the neighbors might think, what your friends might say or any differences you might encounter along the way. Think about common denominators.

You've gone out of your way to pacify them, keep them happy and do whatever you can to be cooperative. Still, members of your family don't seem to be all that appreciative of what you've done for them lately. You don't have to disown them, but you might want to sit them down and have a little chat. Talk about just how hard you've tried to keep the peace. It might not work -- but then again, it might.

If you gave in and did that shopping yesterday, you may feel the need for some exoneration today, but there may be a very easy way to forgive yourself. Now that you've looked over your purchases, you're not quite as enthused about them as you were. Why not pull out those sales receipts and return them? There's no surer way to obtain 'shopper's amnesty' than to admit your sins to the person at the returns counter.

All of a sudden, the urge to keep spending money has passed -- and passed quickly, too. The shopping buddies you refused to let out of the gate will probably get a big kick out of seeing you like this, but once you're done putting up with good-natured ribbing, you'll at least be able to congratulate yourself for being the first one to quit while you were ahead

This would definitely not be the best day on record to pick a fight with you. Not only won't you appreciate it, you'll be more than game to take on anyone -- and with your verbal skills running on high at the moment, they'd be foolish to accept the challenge. If you get the feeling that arguments are waiting under every rock, do the right thing. Separate yourself from the situation. Just until you cool down.

You may not be happy with the way the day starts, but if you resolve to go with the flow, stay calm and let the heavens handle the details, by later in the day an awful lot could change to your liking. In the meantime, if an argument arises over something that's really far less important than it's cracked up to be, it's up to you to use that knack for restoring balance to put things back into perspective.

Stop feeling guilty about allowing yourself to actually relax for a little while. You've been doing nothing but working hard for months now, and you haven't whined or complained a bit. So isn't it time to be as kind to yourself as you would be to anyone else in your position? Give yourself a break -- maybe even a whole night off. If you can't quite bring yourself do it just yet, plan to do it soon. And bring a friend.

It's been tough going between you and a dear one lately. You may even be so badly at odds that you're beginning to wonder if the damage isn't irreparable. Well, it's not. You will need to do some fancy footwork to bring the two of you back together again, but you'll definitely be able to pull it off. Use that famous sense of humor to get the show on the road.

You've been thinking about how to better yourself -- thinking very seriously about it. Of course, that's not an easy thing for you to do. You're famous for taking advantage of every opportunity that comes along, and of doing a darned fine job of it, too. Still, there is one more venue that you'd like to explore, and it will definitely make you more 'marketable.' Why not get going on it now? All the cosmic lights are green.

Spending money will come easily to you now, even if you don't really have it to spend. That doesn't mean you shouldn't treat yourself to something you'd enjoy, but if it's going to put you at risk of losing everything you have, you might want to think about it before you sign on the dotted line. If it's just a little something, don't worry about it. It's major purchases you should be wary of.

Someone who's been a member of your current crew for a while now may be at odds with the rest of the gang over a really petty issue. It may seem that you only have two options. Try to help (always your first choice) by doing everything you can to help make peace. The second apparent option, which may seem inevitable soon, is for you to see the depth of the problem, and refuse to get in the middle. But isn't there a happy medium.
