Asifa Nabeel’s latest collection "a tale of two"centres around progressive Pakistani wear featuring outfits with a contemporary and fresh take on tradition such as flowy anarkalis with caped backs, clouded silk dresses with knots flowing through seams. The fluidity and the timelessness of the glistening colonial era serves as an inspiration for the silhouettes. Intricate embroidered embellishments with tinges of gold and silver with exquisite & rich shades of grass grazed green, unclouded blue, and colors that dominate the festive palette. The collection that bustles plush silks peppered with gold thread work details and splash of sequins reflecting the purity of moist dews, gives tradition an unconventional upgrade.

The Pavilion of Pakistan has been presented by Pakistan National Council of the Arts and Foundation Art Divvy.

P

akistan's presentation engages with multiple bodies of knowledge and narratives including archival material, historic myths, conversations with local communities.

Manora Field Notes creates many connections between Karachi and Venice. Both port cities are situated on historical, transnational trade routes and both regions, at different points in time, have been at the crossroads of immense geopolitical change. The presentation encourages the vision of the artist as a lens through which the public can encounter a more nuanced view of the region, and consider places across the world undergoing similar transformations.

The curator specialising in South Asian art and the Director of Foundation Art Divvy, said “I am proud and honoured that Foundation Art Divvy’s latest endeavour, which focuses on bringing contemporary art from Pakistan to the public arena, is to organise and present Pakistan’s first foray at the Venice Biennale. Pakistan has a remarkable, vibrant art scene and it is extremely important that it is represented on the world stage, particularly at a

Asma Rashid, Co-Director of Foundation Art Divvy (Organiser, Pavilion of Pakistan): “We founded Art Divvy in 2016 with the goal of bringing the stories of contemporary Pakistani artists to a broader audience, with supporting emerging artists being core to that mission. The Pavilion comes at a time when Pakistan is turning the corner and looking forward to new horizons. The Pakistani Pavilion in Venice is years in the making, and we hope this opens a new window to the diversity of talent and practice of artists and curators working out of Pakistan. We are grateful for the support and partnership of the Ministry of Information, Government of Pakistan and The Pakistan National Council of the Arts, which recognises that there are many more voices that need to be heard and stories which are waiting to be told.”

Artist Naiza Khan explained that her Venice exhibition draws upon a prolific archive of material collected over a decade on Manora Island, off the Port of Karachi. '“Manora Field Notes is in some ways an homage to Manora Island and the port of Karachi. At the same time, the exhibition moves through the materiality of that space, inviting questions about labour and production, optics and erasure, and frictions between old and new infrastructures.' she said.

Please share something about yourself, a brief overview of your professional journey?

My Career started with Pepsi Cola International after I got done with my studies, and from there moved on to Coca Cola Beverages and then Rafhan Bestfoods, all in Finance related positions. Later feeling that Finance field is not fulfilling my appetite of creativity and Out of Box Problem Solving, Moved towards Supply Chain, Joined Haleeb Foods Limited and then Pepsi Cola Bottles, Islamabad and within an era of 4 years became Head of Supply Chain Department.

Finally, I Joined Oriflame as a National Operations Manager, saying hello to the direct selling industry, falling in love Immediately with Oriflame and the way Oriflame changes lives of People. Later, Promoted to the Country Manager position immediately taking over the new and complex job responsibilities head to head.

In your own words, how do you describe the brand Oriflame?

What measures have been made by

Oriflame Pakistan to stay-top-of-mind?

The primary target market for Oriflame is the consultants and the prospects they bring and for them Oriflame goes to huge lengths, from conducting Seminars & events that include professional performances, classy recognitions, travelling to dream destinations locally and abroad. This keeps consultants, always inspired by the organization. It stays on top of the mind as to what they can achieve if they live and work hard in the Oriflame Life. Another strong point to our organization is the quality of

products, the amount of energy and research that the company puts in each product is amazing and this helps our customers in clinging to the brand.

It’s not the Marketing, but the tools have changed. How effectively Oriflame Pakistan is aligned with new marketing tools?

Marketing is evolving at an astonishing rate, no doubt in this, new and more complex marketing mix are being introduced every day. Oriflame, however has a very unique way of indulging its consumers and potential sales consultants.

Digital marketing is evolving tremendously as a very important marketing tool in current era. Digital marketing tools are very efficient to interact with targeted audiences in real time.

Engagement in any form is what your customers expect to receive when interacting with your brand or business.

Plus, we focus on improving the lives of our sales force through giving out better commissions, planning amazing events for their entertainment and going to their cities and towns for trainings that will help them work smart.

What are the metrics you find useful in measuring customer engagement?

It’s always the ease in interaction, with ease (lesser use of energy) comes a high chance of engagement, this captures the heart of customers and shoppers alike, we here at Oriflame make sure that any person that comes in contact with our brand/ product, has a very good idea of what he/she is buying and what are the advantages of the product.

What kind of culture you have maintained at Oriflame Pakistan and how would you throw light in its significance?

At Oriflame we are committed to creating opportunities for both professional and personal growth. Working at Oriflame means working in a company defined by a dynamic culture, meaningful work and professional growth; this is what we offer to our employees. What sets Oriflame Pakistan apart from its competitors?

The Obvious difference, there is no direct competition of Direct Sales Companies in Pakistan.

But in my Opinion, it’s the way we are changing lives of normal people. Take a normal housewife, or a teacher, a person who in their entire life, only dream of international travel. Now with Oriflame we see such people go every year, even twice a year.

People have improved how they live and spend, they have improved even their personality in the light of Oriflame and this is what I am Proud of.

What are the important benchmarks if kept in a right direction can help any company to attain success?

In my best opinion, following things are the core of success: 1. Sustainability responsibility and opportunity to achieve real,

lasting, positive change.

2. Moral and Ethical values from top level down the grass root level.

3. Being a Family Unit, Employees spend half of their day even life in Office, any office that focuses on team work and togetherness will always prove more efficient 4. Customer Service, I have complete faith in phrases like “customer is the king”, the better you treat them during your interaction, more and more chances of loyalty are ensured.

5. Strong rewarding system, (Internal and External), this is the balance organizations tend to ignore from one or the other side in the shadow of their profits. But never the less is a very strong motivation How do you balance pursuing opportunities and maintaining focus?

Opportunities will always knock your door, time in and time out you will have the chance to walk out, but the art is when you recognize your true interest and stick with it, satisfied. Oriflame has the spark I need, I always wanted to be a part of positive change and now in Oriflame we are changing lives for good.

Other professional factors play their part, like endless learning and growth that I get in this continuously evolving environment.

Is there any company that has ever impressed you?

There are a lot of organizations in my wish list, starting off with Google, what a creativity, what a passion they put in their thought process.

Then there are the precision organizations like Mercedes and BMW, amazing processes and procedures. Flawless systems and marketing at a whole new level. This list can go on and on, it’s not the name that impresses me, it’s the strength a company possess.

What is the recipe to achieve long-term success?

The recipe to long term success in my words is as follows: Any message for the readers of Paperazzi magazine?

Paperazzi Magazine is the door way to corporate world, it has been this way from the start. For me particularly, this magazine not only shares the major players in the market but also the news and updates that all professionals need to know.

It’s a proud moment for me and Oriflame Sweden is the focus of this edition, and I have been selected to represent myself and my Organization. Swedish people are known for their strong ethical values, down to earth management style and amazing time management.

Why did you decide to become a designer?

Since an early age I was always interested in clothes and I had specific likes but, it all changed in my A levels when a new subject called Design and Textiles was introduced. I just knew that this is what I want to do and the more and more I learnt about fashion the more I developed interest in it. Then I joined PIFD in 2009 and the prestigious school polished my skills and here I am.

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

My father and my husband, the dedication they have towards their work is so inspiring. They have always taught me that hard work always pays off and yes I do get it now!

Tell us about a time when you had to deal with a difficult client.

What was the situation and how did you react?

Well, majority of my clients are usually happy but yes there are times when you end up in a difficult situation. What I have learnt now is to always listen patiently and never say no, and that’s how we manage to satisfy our clients.

Have your parents been an inspiration for you in pursuing your career?

Yes! I really look up to them; they have been my source of inspiration and have supported me throughout.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be doing right now?

I can’t think of any profession, I think this is what I always wanted to be doing.

Which design house do you look up to and why?

Well, there have been many but I find Zuhair Murad to be phenomenal in what he does. Also if talking about Pakistani designers I feel Umar sayeed is exceptional, his work is so authentic and how he keeps recreating his own style and still manages to retain his signature style is just so inspiring.

What is your creative process before you launch a collection?

Creative process before the launch of any collection is being inspired, that could be from anything.

It’s a very long process as after the inspiration there is research and then I start sketching my ideas on the paper and later we start drawing the details of embellishments on the silhouettes. After the paper work is done it goes through dyeing process, the master cut the patterns and that how it goes in production.

What’s your motto or the advice you live by?

Have originality and never give up, that’s all that will help you sustain in the long run.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I dropped the subject designs and textiles in my A levels just because I thought it was beyond difficult.

Who has been your mentor in this industry and what would you like to say to them today?

Nida Azwer is my biggest inspiration as I have worked with her for 5 years and whatever I have learnt after PIFD is from her. I’d like to thank her for all the guidance she gave me and the free hand that was

provided by her to manage things.

What is your destination for the trip of your dreams?

I’ve had the privilege of traveling quite a lot in my life but the next trip would definitely be a Euro trip When you were little, what did you want to be when you grow up?

I think I was lucky to know I wanted to be a painter all my life.

If you got stuck in the elevator and was forced to listen to one Song what would it be?

I get really claustrophobic so I think you would find me reciting all the Surahs I remember.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

To learn to love yourself, only then would you be at peace with everything and everyone around you.
