observations about what to see/ do/ hear in Berlin. 1) Get in touch with the cool desi Berliners:

ich bin ein berliner AdnAn MAlik if there was an app that could collate verbal buzz, Berlin would definitely be one of the top 3 trending cities right now along with Barcelona and istanbul. When I am around people who have visited Berlin there seems to be this impenetrable bond about the secrets of this hipster mecca, and my unabashed desire to be on the inside of what’s cool meant that I would jump at the first chance to visit this city. (I have a new travel rule now: Only visit cities where you know people. Never be a ‘tourist’ ) So my good friend, the first Political & Economic secretary of the German Consulate, Samy Saadi’s invitation to his wedding in Berlin, allowed me to explore the eccentricities of this curious and slightly crazy city that was once the ground zero for the Cold War, and today is the counter-culture capital of the world. Berlin is a city that has an uneasy truce between order and rebellion. The most bombed city in Europe, Berlin spent a fair chunk of the last century divided, by a concrete wall, into 2 ideological hemispheres. Its history has certainly shaped the city and its inhabitants. Life in Berlin is dominated by the many reminders of the crimes committed by wartime Germany and the revenge that was wreaked upon it soon after. Formerly divided into East and West, today the space in-between is a vibrant, buzzing landmass that has a kicking underground electronic music scene, subversive and intelligent street art, cool bars, cafes, museums and gorgeous rustic parks. Less concentric and centralised than other European cities, Berlin is a city of neighborhoods, built with a sense of communalism in mind. Berlin has the vibe of a rebellious teenager with curiously supportive parenting. If you do plan on visiting, below are some of my personal tips & 38

PAPERAzzi Magazine

2013

As someone who tries to be as culturally anonymous as my Punjabiness will allow me to be, Berlin surprised me by not being infested by desis! And the few subcontinental-ites that have decided to call it home are super cool. I had the privilege of staying at my friend, former TV personality and model, Anisa Shaikh’s place. She ensured that I got to experience the very best of Berlin and I owe a lot of these insights to her. I also met up with graphic artist Sarnath Banerjee, Video Artist Bani Abidi’s husband in uber hip Kreuzberg. 2) Follow the Red Brick lane: The shock of almost being knocked over by speeding bicyclists on dedicated bike lanes, had me concerned for my well being for the first three days. And then it flipped. The subsequent days were spent cursing at the FOB’s who’d teeter on to the middle of the same red brick bike paths, oblivious to me and the world, while I zipped down on my bike. Eventhough they have an incredibly efficient and multi-tiered public transport system with the overland and underground metros (S-bahn & U-bahn), buses and trams, by far the best way to discover this city is by bicycle. After Amsterdam, Berlin is supposedly the most bicycle friendly city in the world, with easy rentals, designated lanes and ubiquitous parking spots. Biking kept me fit as I wolfed down breads, meats and malty beverages all day, and allowed me to explore the city, get lost and found again, and concurrently lessen my carbon footprint. 3) Get the ‘Hitler Youth’ cut (but never call it that) Whether you are a man, woman or child, you will feel slightly out of touch if you don’t have a haircut that makes a statement. Variations on the ‘Hitler Youth’ haircut (named for obvious reasons) are the look I saw most young people sporting. Take a razor and shave your sides while leaving a mop up top. Vanilla Ice styled shaved lines across the sides will give you bonus points since the 90’s have made such a huge comeback. 4) Get an education in Street Art: Although Berlin has over 250 museums, the most interesting art I saw was on the side of buildings and in public spaces, especially in areas close to where the wall was. After being designated as UNESCO’s City of Design in 2005, the authorities have begun to ‘tolerate’ the street art scene because of the number of tourists it brings

in. Although graffiti began in the late 70’s in West Germany, it really developed its ouvre after the Berlin wall came down and former east Berliner’s like ‘Tower” and “Linda’s ex” made their mark. Today there are well known street artists such as xooooox (who comments on fashion and capitalism), El Bocho (with his infamous ‘Lucy and the cat’ series where Lucy finds different ways to try and kill her cat) and Mein Lieber Prost who, like celebrity street artists Banksy and Shepard Fairey, have started to exhibit and sell in galleries. Local business and authorities, especially in uber hip Kreuzberg, have also hired artists to paint murals on the fronts of their buildings, most famously the Italian artist Blu who has painted 2 men trying to tear each other’s masks off representing Berlin’s struggles with reunification.

the numerous sprawling night clubs (Berghain is supposedly the best nightclub in all of Europe, but be prepared to be rejected after waiting for over an hour!), or inside shops and cafes. Whenever I heard something that piqued my interest, I would Shazaam it! Although with all of the really talented young music producers creating original tracks, the app would come up with nothing!

For a vision of post Stalinist dystopia, head to Karl Marx Allee to the East Side Gallery where you can see street art on longest surviving stretch of the former Berlin Wall.

Berlin is still a relatively cheap city compared to the rest of Europe and properties (either for rentals or purchase) are still affordable. If you have the time, find a really cool apartment on the website Airbnb in Kreuzberg, Mitte or Prenzlauerberg. If however, you want to stay at a hotel, then do the Michelberger Hotel in Fredrechshain, across the bridge from Kreuzberg. The hotel is very DIY trendy: Young artsy types moonlight as receptionists, retro DJs play sets in the courtyard all day (I woke up to a crooning Paul Simon one morning), the eclectic cool lobby has low sofas, a library of books and lots of ‘found’ art. And televisions in the hallways play ‘The Big Lebowksi’ on rerun all day.

5) Go Green! I was surprised to find out that 35% of Berlin is made up of green parks, rivers, lakes and forests. There are over 2500 Public parks and gardens and there is now an official authority that is labeling and numbering every single tree in Berlin. Tiergarden is the largest green space in Berlin and is akin to Central Park in Manhattan. With a zoo, lakes, beer gardens, memorials, museums and a commitment to maintain an organic and rustic feel, the gardens are a fantastic day to spend a whole day sunbathing, biking or exploring. There are plenty of idiosyncratic children’s’ parks sprinkled throughout the city as well, each based on natural themes and built of wood and other organic materials, with very little use of metals. And if you fancy a dip, head to the lakes right outside Berlin, where you can swim in freshwater, sunbathe and compare tattoos and interestingly placed body piercings. 6) Fashion: Underdress, or in fact, don’t dress at all: My friend Hamaad Haider who recently visited Berlin told me in a WhatsApp message “BTW there is a strict dress code to get into Berlin clubs. You can’t dress up. Funky colours or a shirt etc will get you rejected. Its all black and dark and looking messed up, unfortunately”. After a day of biking, Anisa insisted that it was fine to walk into a bar wearing shorts and a t-shirt. “This is Berlin, you can wear whatever you want”. As a Pakistani man with sartorial awareness, I found this all to be quite a challenge. However, what I wasn’t ready for at all was the ‘birthday suit’ outfit required for visiting the Sauna’s, or the various nudist sections of the dozens of parks that Berlin has to offer. Ironically, however, out of the multi-ethnic group of American, Italian, English and Swedish friends that visited the Sauna, I came out the least prudish. Go figure! The Liquidrome is a centrally located urban spa that had an indoor sea-salt pool with a live dj set playing underwater and is a must visit to detox from the hectic weekend partying. 7) Keep Shazaam/ Soundhound at your fingertips: Home to what is arguably the greatest electronic music scene in the world, you are going to come across some really sick beats, whether it’s at one of

8) Either Airbnb it or stay at a hotel that plays its own DJ sets:

9) Move over Selfies, time to go retro! With analogue technology well and truly buried in the past, trust a bunch of hipsters to bring back the idea of a photo booth and make it retro-cool again. Uniquely a Berlin project that’s become a huge success and is going to make its way to the streets of London soon, you can find photobooths spread through out town and at the coolest clubs. 10) Appreciate a society that aims to be all inclusive: Most European countries have equal opportunity and nondiscrimination laws enshrined in their constitutions, and it was incredibly heartening to see people with various disabilities operating independently in public spaces. I saw people in wheelchairs at parks, inside malls, on buses and even at nightclubs. I’ve even heard stories about grandparents partying at nightclubs until the wee hours of the morning! I really appreciated the extent to which the Berlin authorities and people are trying to make it an inclusive society. 2013

the dream

team

Meet Anisa and Amina Rashid Khan- the mother daughter duo who have revolutionised the event management industry in Pakistan with their innovative ideas and flawless planning.

42

PAPERAzzi Magazine

2013

How did the two of you come up with the idea of starting an event management company? The company was created by my mother Anisa, who first started doing events as a volunteer for various charity fundraisers and later for the APGA tour and Pakistan Squash Federation. My first foray into event management was the first Club Night I planned in 2003 while on holiday from university. When I came back to Pakistan I continued doing events part-time while my day job was as a VJ on Play TV. Eventually I started doing events full-time. RAKA is a very unique name, what does it mean and why did you choose it to represent your brand? RAKA stands for Rashid Ahmad Khan & Associates - my father’s name. The company already existed so it was convenient to just use the existing name. What are some of the services you offer? No challenge is too formidable. We offer any and every kind of event, corporate, private, commercial and we have recently started setdesign. We have also succesfully managed a destination wedding in Thailand. What is a normal day like for you? Meetings start first thing in the morning and continue all day, interspersed with site visits, design planning, vendor management, etc. Work runs until pretty late, after which, I make it a point to go for a run and finish off the day with sheesha and hanging out with my Great Dane, Kimba. What are the pros and cons of working with family? Pro: When running your own business, trust is imperative for smooth running. With family, trust is no issue. Con: The work never ends.. How do you divide responsibilities? Ever since I have joined the team, I have taken the lead on event design and execution. My mother, Anisa, handles anything to do with florals, logistics, HR, and smooth running of the ship. How difficult is it for you to leave work at the office? Impossible. It has never happened. What are some of the challenges you face or have faced in the past with different clients? Clients have extremely high expectations and usually cannot articulate what they would like.. Everyone wants their event to be "different" from the next, yet cannot say how and sometimes cannot afford it, which makes the job challenging. However, we manage to maintain a high rate of client satisfaction. That being said, I now hate the word "different" : ) How would you define Pakistani taste in event management? Every client has different tastes, but in recent years, a common feature

in all events is grandeur and opulence in florals and construction. Gone are the days of a big wedding in a garden with a few floral centerpieces. Now you see a lot of customisation, detailing and construction. How has the industry evolved over the years? Expectations continue to increase, people want more and more all the time so this has driven up the costs of an event. Your events are always beautiful, yet unique. Where do you find inspiration? I find my inspiration everywhere. I have plans to develop an interiors and furniture line, therefore I am always researching ideas. Sometimes a single piece of furniture can inspire an entire event theme. Coloured diffused lighting features prominently in all your events. Could you tell us why? Lighting is essential to the event. It sets the mood immediately and more effectively than anything else. I always try and do the right kind of light for each event. Apart from the use of coloured lights, black and white checkered floors have become your signature? Can you tell us why? We focus on all types of flooring in our events simply because I feel most people ignore what they are walking on. I love checkered flooring, its very graphic, yet classy and livens up the event. I love black and white but we have also used gold and white, silver and white red and white chequered and will be doing a pink and white for a birthday next. Although it is a signature look and been used often, I am trying to make a conscious effort not to do it but clients love it and always ask for the checkered floor! What are some of the most memorable projects you have executed in the past? The Magnum launch was one of the most fun and creative, a destination wedding in Thailand was a new challenge and every Club Night is fun because i get to design whatever I want in any way I like. Which project, taken up by the two of you together, would you claim as your favourite? All our projects are team-based, unless one of us is out of town. I think the Thailand wedding was probably a favourite beacuse it was something new and challenging but very sucessful in the end What advice would you like to give someone who wants to venture into the industry? Its not an easy job. We barely get time to attend the events because we are always setting them up. We work all night and make a point to be there at clearing also. Many people say why don’t you just hire more staff and let them handle it; I always say the day that happens RAKA will go down. What are your future plans regarding RAKA? We want to do more destination weddings, bigger projects and start overseas- maybe Dubai. 2013

The truth is the most experienced makeup mavens can mess up now and then and end up looking scary. We talked to the dynamic duo at TONI&GUY Lahore, Shammal Qureshi and Juju Haider about some common makeup mistakes. Follow these and you can easily avoid looking garish.

don ’ t :

f ace ti m e

do :

1. Choose your base wisely: Keep it as close to your own skin tone as possible or go one level darker. If you go more than one level lighter, you risk looking grey which is often seen at any given dinner party or shaadi. As a rule, you want to match the colour of your neck. In the event that your neck and body is one level lighter and you would like to match your foundation to your face, try choosing one with a little bit of warmth (meaning it has a yellow undertone) to avoid it turning grey. 2. Dark circles? No problem. Try a concealer with an orange tone. It may sound weird but try it out - it works like magic, making your dark circles vanish, blending them with your skin. Most importantly try and avoid cooler undertones as they will just make your dark circles turn grey as well. 3.Skin is important - it is the largest organ you have. Be sure to use good skincare that is suited for your skin type. If you don’t know what that would be, make an appointment with a skincare professional and let them suggest some. 4.Invest in a really good cleanser, toner, moisturiser and sunblock. Words cannot describe how much these will help you. The better the skin, the better the makeup – it’s as simple as that.Go for quality, not quantity. Remember, the same foundation or eye colour that suits your friend may not suit you. 5. Remember : It is not always necessary to match the colour of your eye shadow with your outfit. More often than not, it results in overkill. 46

PAPERAzzi Magazine

2013

1. Blonde highlights? Don’t. Just don’t. Super blonde highlights just don't compliment our skin tone. To that, when you add the white foundation, too much blush and pale lips, it is the perfect recipe for disaster! 2. Colouring your hair can enhance your complexion and bring out your hair cut. Always choose a colour that compliments your skin tone. And please, don't believe the old wives tale that colouring your hair turns your hair grey. 3. Don’t wear coloured contact lens without any trace of makeup, unless you want to look like a zombie. 4. While winter calls for painted lips, lipstick and gloss in the summer it can appear too heavy. Instead, try a dab of tinted lip gloss with your finger or brush. 5. Filling in eyebrows with a black pencil is a common mistake. Try using brown eye shadow instead – it works better and always makes your eyebrows look natural. However, steer clear from brown shades with a red undertone. Remember when in doubt, keep it simple. If you’re unsure of how something will turn out, avoid being experimental. We have seen women look comical far too many times, trying out the blue eye shadow or the green eye liner. Be different but before that, be wise!

Once you disentangle yourself from this drama, far more appealing pursuits await. You only need to shift perspective to spot them.
