A Different Kind Of Love BY SONYA REHMAN

E

ight months. Eight long months since my brother’s cancer diagnosis in October. Eight months of grief, fear, strength – emotions that continued in one strange, static loop, again, and again and again.

It’s so strange to be sitting here, typing up this blog post in my pj’s, past 10pm on a weekday, while my brother watches an action flick in his room. The normalcy feels good. It’s a calm night. The knots in my neck and upper back are gone. I went a little crazy using talcum powder (Johnson’s Baby Powder – love it, even at 31) tonight. I smell like a cloud. But I’m happy – wait, scratch that out, it sounds phony. I feel young. A little less burdened. A little more carefree. What an education; spanning winter to summer. The girl 54

who walked the path with her family through the ordeal is someone I don’t recognize these days, now that I have time to indulge in contemplation (what a luxury). She’s new. But I like her. She’s a little more relaxed. Realistic. Not very bitter. Not very idealistic. She takes care of her feet, and grew her hair out a little too long. When a loved one suffers, you suddenly realize how insignificant you are, little dots, ants, on this massive, endless, grid called life. When grief hits, you, the jiggly, ignorant piñata, you’re smacked on the head, in the sides, bursting into a million stars, bits of you, flung everywhere. I felt like that initially. And then, scrambling on all fours, trying to salvage bits of yourself to piece back together, to take on a new, stronger avatar, to hold things together, to

hold the fort together. But I don’t think I could’ve done it without this sweet, maternal circle that formed around my splintered self, like warm honey. Filling in the gaps, the fissures. Our quest for love, lust and companionship has made the modern woman forget a different kind of love. A platonic love that exists between two women. In wars, in loss, in times of crisis, womenfolk aid each other, patching together a support network to see each other through. We don’t talk or write about those kinds of love stories anymore. But how women carry each other through – it’s very, very pure. I realize that now. We women take each other for granted too often. But I’m beginning to pause and reflect on the handful of women who held me together, propped my shoulders up when I was too weak to face each day when my brother’s treatment rolled out in a concoction of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, drugs, checkups, body scans, etc.

start thinking about boys again, and marriage, S in Amsterdam, and of course, Ma, who, well, for everything. And there were more too. In the recent few weeks, after watching Frozen, Queen and Maleficent, I realized something: the narrative of love is changing. Yes, Prince Charming does exist – he does, I promise you. But not without farts and flaws. You call THAT a kiss?! Try harder, please. Sheesh. You call THAT a kiss?! Try harder, please. Sheesh. But till then, you, me, us – till we find the idiots, we must remember that happily-ever-after comes in bits and pieces, in the journey leading up to The One, The Wedding, The Consummation of Souls. And in the journey, you will notice a different kind of love, look for it, it’s there – women, who are guiding, leading you, consciously and unconsciously. Last weekend I met N after a long time. She was in town and we were to meet after consistently exchanging mes-

My Nikkah was to take place at the Badshahi mosque early morning during the height of summer, so I wanted to go with a very simple and fresh look. I opted for white chicken kari in the end. I went to Shamsha Hashwani in Karachi for my nikkah jora who I believe is the queen of chicken kari in Pakistan. Her finishing is just impeccable. I loved the lace detailing she added to my outfit and the crystal work also set it apart from other typical chicken kari joras.

My mehndi outfit was designed by my mother, the original designer in our family. Even though she designed a lot of outfits for my wedding trousseau, I wanted to wear something of hers on one of my main days as well. For the mehndi I wanted a very traditional look but not necessarily in the usual yellow and orange color palette. My mother took me fabric shopping with her and we picked out a gorgeous jamawar for my traditional two legged gharara. The rest was all my mother, she added beautiful traditional gota embellishments and really made the outfit come alive. My good friend Sanaa also made a significant contribution. She attended an Iranian expo right before my wedding and bought me beautiful jewellery made out of gota. In the end my look was exactly how I wanted it to be, simple and traditional.

My sister Khadijah has been dressing me up for as long as I can remember. She designed every outfit I wore during her wedding time, so naturally, when it came to my wedding, the thought of anybody else designing my jora did not even cross my mind. We all have that one color we think we look great in, for me it was coral, so that is what we went with. Other than that, I requested her to give me a scalloped edge on my dupatta which turned out beautiful. It was a labor of love for her and I honestly have not seen her make something so beautiful with such painstaking detail before. My jewellery was my mother’s work. The jewellery maestro Reema aunie and my mother added their own variations to the polki pendant & jhunka’s my mother had kept for me to wear on my wedding. In short, my mother and my sister made sure I felt like a queen on my wedding day!

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place meet new people and get wiser! Whether you like to travel alone or with stories and experiences. We wanted to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section planes trains and automobiles. Tell us about your favourite or one of your favourite destination spots. Where did you choose to go and why? I love Mykonos. I have been going there since I was 18. It is one of my favorite summer destinations and it never gets old. I have a lot of close greek friends as well so that’s always an added plus, as I always feel at home there. Who did you travel with? I normally always go with friends. I have some amazing girls trips here with some of my best friends and its always memorable.

travel diaries

Where did you stay? Cava Tagoo is one of my favourites and has a great fun vibe to it. Mykonos Blue is beautiful and is located near Nammos, one of Mykonos famous chic party beaches and Santa Marina has the best view from every room! What is the best shopping spots there? There are a lot of gret boutiques in town. All walking distance from each other as it’s a super small town. The main street however is Matogiannia and there you will find Zilly, Soho Soho and Carouzous. This street can be any shopaholic’s best friend!

travel diaries

Finally, any tips? There are tons of direct flights from London straight to Mykonos so you don’t have to do the hop across from Athens. Everything works in Euros and it’s a super safe destination.

travel diaries

Suggest places for a perfect night out.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Mykonos is all about soaking up the sun. Cava tagoo has an excellent spa as well. So sun bathing in the day on a beach and coming back to a massage before dinner is ideal.

travel diaries

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? I can list a dozen but one of my favourites would have to be Alemagou - this is an absolute MUST on a Sunday, just for lunch, not the beach though. It’s super trendy with a bar, good music and excellent food. Spilia has a breathtaking setting for lunch built into a cave on the sea, offering the freshest seafood but not for a wild day. Lia beach is the most beautiful beach on the island with the best waters and sun loungers. If you want to tan, swim etc, then definitely go to Lia beach where the restaurant Liasti is situated. Your hotel should be able to book you the good sun loungers on the right-hand side of the beach. Bandana on Kalafatis beach has the best pizzas in town!

Nautilus, La Maison de Catherine and Kazarma have food you would die for, and are the ideal restaurants for a perfect night out. Interni and Nammos are fabulous options too, but my personal favourites would have to be Sea Satin and Nobu! Remember, dinners in Greece are late, so book for 10.30pm, otherwise you will be the only people in the restaurant! Till then, go to Little Venice to Caprice or Galleraki for sunset drinks. At Galleraki, try the drink “Katerinaki.

cancer

At the beginning of the week you’re like a plant just barely breaking the surface of the ground. The world is heavy. The sun is distant. What with everything on your mind, expect to be unusually introverted. By Wednesday, you’ll be sprouting huge leaves and growing in unforeseen directions. A new friend comes into your life on Thursday, a cute flower, perhaps? On Friday, when a ray of light lands directly on you, make sure you’re looking your best. It’s an exciting weekend for you, but try to stay grounded on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, go wild.

Your emotions and those of others will be all over the map right now. Anything that happens Monday or Tuesday can be safely written off moodiness and sensitivity levels are off the charts. Wednesday and Thursday are more even-keeled days, but money issues figure prominently. (If someone presents you with a grand moneymaking scheme, don’t opt in.) You won’t really feel like yourself until Friday or Saturday. The weekend holds good things for you, although Sunday feels a little off kilter.

You are thinking like a scientist at the start of the week, and your interest in your own emotions is almost clinical. You’re in a logical, observational mode; but, as you know, some things simply can’t be calculated. This is loud and clear on Wednesday and Thursday especially, when you find yourself getting along remarkably well with people you hardly know. Chalk it up to chemistry. On Friday, your relations with others are less smooth for reasons not entirely clear but a great conversation on Sunday sets you on a good course for next week.

If someone asks you what your favorite kind of pie is on Monday or Tuesday, you won’t be able to answer. You like the texture of apple but the flavor of pumpkin. Or whatever. Every decision even a minor one this week expands into a complex set of irreconcilable variables. Midweek has you feeling torn about bigger issues than pie preference. Come Friday, you may feel more like hanging out around the house with a remote control (or a book) in your hand than anything else. You are in a thoughtful mood this weekend. Stay home: You’re happy with a minimum of fanfare.

leo

virgo

libra

scorpio

The easy answer isn’t interesting to you right now. You’d like to know what’s really going on. On Monday and Tuesday you’re in detective mode asking penetrating questions, considering every angle. And on Wednesday, buoyed by all your research, you charge into the world with fresh insights and confidence; no mincing words for you. Thursday is a big day romance-wise, and on Friday your ego is front and center. Try as you might to deflect attention on Saturday, all eyes are on you. Don’t let a personality clash with someone else ruin a rejuvenating Sunday. Be optimistic and forgiving.

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it’s also the heart of discovery. You are nothing if not curious at the start of the week, and your analytical powers have never been stronger. Your restlessness right now is incredibly useful. Communicate what you’re thinking. On Wednesday and Thursday you’d like to be climbing mountains or testing theorems, but your family has other things in mind. Don’t distress, because you’ll have plenty of personal time on Friday and Saturday. (Although your love life might pull you in other directions.) Sunday is a day of resolutions and new beginnings.

All you can think about is money this week. Obviously you’re thinking about more than money, per se when you get right down to it, you’re thinking about the future but the value of material possessions and striking a balance between generosity and stinginess are very much on your mind. The middle of the week relieves you from this line of thinking by way of a purely fun excursion with a couple of your friends. In the days leading up to Sunday, chances are good that your mind will go to thoughts of the past. But Sunday, once again, your mind’s on the future.

Your energy is bright and powerful these days and on Monday you’re feeling like a new you. You go into the week stronger (and more respected) than you’ve felt in a while. The confidence suits you. Your mind is open to anything, but it might be too open on Wednesday and Thursday when you may find yourself caught up in a crowd mentality, being persuaded to do things you wouldn’t normally do. Friday returns you to a high sense of order and self-control. That’s all well and good, but don’t forget to party Saturday night.

aquarius

pisces

Slowness is a virtue at the start of the week it encourages thoughtfulness, and the more thoughtful you are, the more emotionally exposed you feel. But rest assured that no one but you can tell what’s going on deep in your brain. Wednesday and Thursday will be relatively social days, although strangers won’t surround you, people will surround you you love and trust. Friday is a big day at work and on Saturday you have chores to do around the house. But Sunday, with its relaxing and spontaneous vibe, will be the best day you’ve had in ages.

There are things you’re willing to live with and things you just aren’t. On Monday, you may have to draw a line in the sand. Others may react in funny ways, but your good friends will stand by your side. Tuesday will be an emotionally rocky day after putting your foot down, you may feel pangs of regret (they’ll pass) but Wednesday is a lucky day for you, as is Thursday. Friday and Saturday you’re happiest sharing your good luck with others. This leads to a realization this weekend: You want to do something with your life that helps lots of people. You have big dreams.

Your life is a movie at the outset of the week, but you can’t quite follow the dialogue and the car chases make no sense. And who’s the hero in this flick anyway? If you feel like canceling dinner plans and kicking back in front of the TV, hey, by all means. By Wednesday and Thursday your social calendar’s too packed for TV time, and on Friday and Saturday music and art figure strongly. If someone asks you about your goals, don’t roll your eyes; planning for the future never hurt anyone. In fact, on Sunday, someone might share a goal of his or her own that is so brilliant you’ll consider adding it to your list.

Monday and Tuesday are great days for decision-making, but don’t go on your gut alone. You have a wealth of information to work with. Look at the details. Organize yourself. Wednesday and Thursday, when your plans go into effect, you may feel hesitant or awkward or pessimistic or crazy you’ll be bouncing all over the place emotionally, but stay the course. By Friday you’ll already be reaping the rewards of a path well chosen. People will be complimenting you right and left this weekend. The more modest you are, the more impressive you will be.
