For one, it seems like Pakistani set designers are smoking crack while on the job. That, or, a group of wild My Little Ponies (with the trots – pun intended) are set loose (pun intended, again) to take massive, sparkly, neon-coloured poops in blissful abandon on the sets. The colour schemes are an eye-sore and a half. Given the number of advertisements that run during some of the popular live shows, surely the channels can afford to pump in a little more money to get the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ of the show right?

SONYA REHMAN

morning show muck While I have come across snippets of local morning shows on the tube every now and then, while channel surfing, I decided to watch a couple of morning shows for two days running. Now look, I know our Pakistani morning shows (and their hosts) have been thrashed to high heavens in articles and blogs, and frankly it has become a tad boring - bashing and criticising the same thing over and over again - but after my two-day viewing marathon, I am compelled to share my observations. 50

N a ta s h a K h a l i d I wanted to give Misha a very romantic look. Her hair set the tone with Sabrina giving her a gorgeous slightly messy woven braid. For Misha’s skin I mixed M.A.C’s strobe cream with Chanel’s vita lumiere foundation to give natural yet radiant coverage. Her eyes were enhanced using soft golds and browns. This was followed by applying Bobbi Brown’s pink coral blush on her cheeks, followed by M.A.C’s Impassioned lipstick mixed with Nars’ Schiap to create that beautiful shocking pink pout.

misha lakhani This high-collared pistachio velvet coat from my new bridal collection, BOHEMIAN HEIRESS and can be worn front open or closed. I’ve paired it with our signature kalidar in rani pink velvet and a fawn net dupatta with embroidered clusters all over. I love mixing different types of embroidery and fabrics in a way that doesn’t necessarily match. I balanced the dramatic silhouette with minimal accessories - just polki balees, a bracelet and watch.

It’s fully embellished with very intricate zardozi work. I wore it with a pair of polki, ruby and south sea pearl earrings to add a hint of colour. The clutch is a woven gold leather Bottega, paired with Gina heels.

N a ta s h a K h a l i d I wanted to give Nida a classic look enhancing her delicate features. For the eyes it was a wash of shimmery champagne eyeshadow (M.A.C’s Ricepaper) and graphic thick winged eyeliner (M.A.C’s liquid last liner) with lashings of mascara( Diorshow in Black). Her skin was primed using a Smashbox primer followed by Giorgio Armani silk foundation to give her skin a luminous sheer quality. This was followed by Nars Orgasm blush to the apple of the cheeks for a gorgeous flush. I then applied Ruby Woo by M.A.C mixed with M.A.C’s Dubonet to give her pout a classic red finish. Her hair was left in soft natural waves to give a classic yet modern feel to the whole look! 54

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

BY NATASIA KHALID

With more and more new and upcoming designer labels, we have spotted our favourite new kid on the fashion block- Umaima Mustafa. This new entrant made an impression at the TDAP runway with the showcase of her debut collection, which included a mix of trendy yet sophisticated pieces comprising of black, white, gold and beige. Her work is original, feminine and versatile so we decided to catch Umaima backstage and get to know a little more about this rising star. 58

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born and raised in Karachi. I attended KGS with my two brothers and sister. After that I completed my bachelors in Political Science & Womens Studies from UMASS-Amherst. I then decided I wanted to pursue a career in Law and completed my LLB from the University of London. I spent four years working as a lawyer in Karachi, which was an interesting experience as I learnt to deal with people from all walks of life. When did you first start designing? I have always designed my own clothes and once I moved back from the US my mother had started her own boutique. That is when I started taking more interest in fashion and thought that I would eventually start my own brand. Who or what inspired you to start designing? Was it always something you knew you wanted to do? For me inspiration comes from numerous sources and the most bizarre places, but one person in particular has shaped not only the way I work and design but also my outlook and expectations of myself. My father was extremely particular about everything and a perfectionist- everyday I realise how much he has influenced me. It is that influence that gave me the desire to design my own clothes and is one of the factors that guides me. There are many upcoming designers these days, what makes your brand different from the rest? There are and it is so wonderful to be able to go out and buy everything from the latest western trends to couture and traditional outfits. Gone are the days of waiting and placing ordering months in advance for a special occasion. I design for myself, that is what makes me different and that is why I'm confident in each and every piece I have ever put out. I want to be able to make outfits that are easy to wear, appropriate for any age groupand flattering to the female silhouette. Classic fashion or Modern fashion? Which one do you prefer and why? Fashion repeats itself and everything makes a comeback. For me it has always been classic with a little edge depending on current trends. What is your personal style statement? I would describe it as elegant and simple. I believe in Pierre Balmain’s quote; "Keep to the basic principles of fashion and you will always be in harmony with the latest trends without falling prey to them." Tell us about your new collection and what influenced it. My debut collection is minimalistic. I have played with mostly black, gold and beige but there's definitely a fun side to it. One of my favourite outfits is a patchwork jacket with a jumpsuit. It took me weeks to handpick every little piece. The process was frustrating at times but it gave me a sense of why I love designing clothes. The collection is fun and edgy yet elegant. I like the idea of layers and putting pieces together that create an entire outfit; versatility is something that is important to so many people today.

Who are you favourite designers and why? There isn't one particular designer I would say is my favourite. Having said that, I do love Balmain for their amazingly structured and timeless jackets. Elie Saab, Valentino, Zuhair Murad for their breathtaking dresses and Neil Lane's jewellery. I could go on and on. Can we expect a Prét line from your brand? Yes most definitely, I am still working on my collection and we will be officially launching in December this year. What you saw at TDAP was just a glimpse of the collection- only 12 pieces. I am working on finalising the collection to make sure it is complete, but expect a wide range from prét to couture. Any advice you would like to give to other upcoming or aspiring designers? Just take that first step and do it if it’s something you're passionate about. I planned and planned for years until one day sitting at my desk at the most boring job I have ever had I decided to walk away from law, it was not considered one of the wisest decisions on my part but I was ready to do something I love. You'll never be ready until you're in the deep end struggling to make a mark.

RAPID FIRE Favourite holiday destination? Secluded island with plenty of shade. Favourite cuisine? I am impartial to French pastry. Your perfect Sunday? When the weather is nice, the beach with close friends and laughs. Guilty pleasure? Carbs. Favorite perfume? Narciso Rodriguez. Hobbies? Vintage shopping- I can spend hours walking the stalls at markets like Portobello. Most daring thing you’ve done? Jumping out of a plane. Favorite local designer? Iman- Body Focus Favorite model? Cybil Chowdhry Finally, three words to describe yourself? Decisive, loyal and uninhibited.

bridal trends

Makeup extraordinaire Leena Ghani believes that a bride should look like the best version of herself on her wedding day and does not believe in giving her a complete transformation. Here she shows us the two different looks she gave the lovely Tina Khan.

Baraat: Pale eyes/bright lips

I

started off by first moisturising the face which is key as it will help the concealer and foundation to blend into the skin and prevent it from making any dry patches more apparent. Next I worked a thin layer of foundation on Tina’s face and buffed it in. After that I worked on concealing the under eye area. Most people have bluish/purple dark circles. so a pink/peach colour corrector or concealer works wonders to lift the greyness. I opted for a warm golden colour on the eyelids as I wanted the focus to stay on the lips, but also keep the eyes vibrant and engaging. I mixed a bronze colour on the outer corner and blended it with the golden base eye shadow to add depth and also elongate the eyes slightly. Instead of a black liner I used black eye shadow to line Tina’s upper lid stretching the liner just slightly at the outer corners.

After applying the mascara and false lashes to open up the eyes, I ended it with a highlighter just underneath her brow bone. The most important tip I can give regarding contouring is that it should be as subtle and natural as possible. The idea is to add the contours back on the face that got lost underneath the foundation. When foundation is applied the face loses all its natural contours making the face look fuller, especially in pictures. After contouring the cheeks I ended it by applying a hint of blush just on the apple of the cheeks. I used Melba by M.A.C, it’s a warm peachy colour and compliments red lips. Before applying the lipstick I lined Tina’s lips with Brick M.A.C lip pencil and with a lip brush I applied Russian Red, its one of my favourite red lipsticks. Its creamy yet matt. It’s a cold red which means its has blue/pink undertones.

Valima: Dark eyes/pale lips

F

or Tina’s Valima we decided to go for a modern yet traditional look. After prepping her face I applied Bronze and Goldmine eyeshadows by M.A.C. However I applied the eyeshadow in layers, building the eyeshadow in stages to add depth. I applied the Gold colour in the inner corner to add brightness and to open up the eyes, after that with a blending brush I added the darker colour on the outer corner of the eyelid and blended the two colours in the middle. The trick to blending eyeshadow is to keep blending until there are no hard lines and it becomes a gradual fade from one colour to the other. I use M.A.C 217 blending brush, its the perfect size and it is slightly round from the top.

60

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2013

After applying the eyeshadow I lined Tina’s eyes with a gel based eyeliner using a very thin eyeliner brush. I love Blacktrack by M.A.C it’s easy to use and dries pretty quickly too. It literally just glides on so I followed Tina’s natural eye shape and winged the eyeliner just slightly at the outer corners, making the eyes look feline and long. I choose a coral/pink lipstick to finish the look and added a touch of bronzer on her cheekbones to add definition to her face. Tina made a gorgeous bride and the makeup complimented her clothes and jewellery. Till next time girls!

HAIR TRENDS AT PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week 2013

True to their legacy of bringing global hair trends with a twist to suit our local market, TONI&GUY Lahore returned to the PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week 2013 mesmerising the audience with a cool and edgy hair trends show.

This year, were given global colour palettes for Autumn/ Winter 2013 by L’Oreal Professionel and were asked to put together a show with their own take on the trends.

Shammal Qureshi, Creative Director of Toni&Guy Lahore calls it an interesting journey so far, which keeps on getting better and better. “Not only are we adapting the hair and makeup

The hair trends were broken down into three major looks referred to as the 'It Looks' that have been causing waves worldwide as well.

The first look was Rose Gold - Retro Waves. It has been inspired by this season's Bottega campaign and Jessica Chastain. As Rose Gold has warmer tones, such as strawberry blonde and apricot blonde, it was adapted in a subtle manner on a cooler base. The styling was quite similar to the original concept, but was adapted in terms of colours and the technique to suit our market. As for styling, it was kept very similar to the inspirations of the look. Shammal expects this to be the look of the season for Pakistan. Model Fouzia Aman was chosen for this look as she has beautiful, long hair that fits the retro wave to the tee and her skin colour compliments the subtle rose gold effect. Looking at her on the ramp, we couldn’t have agreed more.

Icy Brown: The second look was the Icy Brown Bob. It goes from a very dark brown to a matte brown. The look was shown as an above-the-shoulder bob. Special variations of the look were done for the catwalk. Being very locally relevant already, there was not much to deviate from the global vision. Amna Ilyas was the choice for the Icy Brown look as her skin tone was perfect for the look and the bob looked great on her too! Having a defined neckline and shoulders, the cut looked both edgy and stylish on her.

The Silver Blonde Chignon: Titled the Silver Blonde Chignon, this look was inspired mainly by the Loewe campaigns and Carey Mulligan and has cool icy blondes, with tones of slate and stone. The styling of the hair was done in an almost-50's-inspired updo. For this look, Fayezah Ansari's attitude was perfect as Shammal needed someone who was confident in her own skin to carry off the look. Shammal was extremely excited about showing these looks at the PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week. “Since we are showcasing these looks on PFDC's bridal platform, we want to make the show revolve around how women feel at the time of the bridal season. We want to capture what it truly means to be part of our rich culture: the love, the romance, the elegance, the magic. All of this, with Toni&Guy's signature edge.” 2013

You will be successful with new projects this week- buying, selling and new ventures are on their way. You have a trusting nature and you tend to make rash decisions but this might come in handy as quick thinking is what is required this week. However, a word of caution, do not take everything at face value. Be careful before you sign any documentation or seal the deal.

Your adventurous side seems to be coming out and suddenly you are not wanting to plan everything. You may want to cross borders and explore new places, travel where you haven’t travelled before. Now is the time to make those plans and implement them. Something exciting is waiting to happen to you, so just inhale and take a deep breath!

Certain business or financial matters may be feeling tedious but the important thing is they have reached a turning point. They require your attention right now. What you learn could bring about some profitable changes. The dark clouds surrounding you have disappeared. Since October 5th you seem relaxed and the trauma you may have gone through is over. Occasionally things simply fall into place and this is one of those times. However the knock- on effect may not be exactly what you hoped for. They will however lead to substantial changes in elements of your work and lifestyle- changes that aren’t exactly welcome. Still take a chance, these too promise amazing results.

While you sometimes wish you could act with the same spontaneity as others, you know you would want to worry about something unwise or wish you would have been more demanding. Now, events require that you to move swiftly. Life is all about exploration, not sticking with the familiar. Take a chance. You’ll only regret what you didn’t do, not what you did.

You were sure about that someone special but suddenly you feel like the reluctant romantic. You are shying away from commitments you had made. Your heart seems to be wandering. This attitude is in bad taste and breaking hearts unnecessarily can never turn out well. Be careful as what goes around, comes around.

This week you seem to be planning your whole future. Dreaming and planning is great but Dear Pisces it is time you become a bit more practical and set realistic goals. Don’t get your hopes up too high as this time if you don’t get what you want it is really going to hurt. So be careful before you dream too big.
