LOVE AT FIRST BITE Talia Shahbaz tells us a story of Burger-eaters, an imaginary land and the many headed monster.
U
s desis are all in essence major foodies. That, my friends, is a fact undeniable. Our simpleton hearts are excited by the mere mention of a new burger chain opening in the city. You might perchance see a crowd gathering at the corner dressed to the nines (wearing heels, carrying branded shoes-andmen on their arms- do not judge, it is a euphoria only a desi girl can fully understand). Witnessing such a gathering on a random street, you should draw the logical conclusion that a new frozen yoghurt is now available in your city. Frozen yoghurt aside, today we are talking meat. All kinds 36

of flesh. Burger flesh. Succulent, tempting, thick, hard. I mean hard to resist. At Hardees, for example. Let me add to this picture. Visualize an imaginary country where just recently, the national Telecom Authority was so worried about the ‘Moral Values’ of the youth, that they banned day and night call or texting packages to ensure that no one gets to converse for too long on the phone. Not that the imaginary parliamentarians of this imaginary nation and their progeny would suffer from such an alteration. One such imaginary legislator claimed in a fantasy assembly of geniuses,
“Boys and girls talk the whole night on mobile phones and these packages are destroying the moral character of our youth." When the imaginary telecom companies asked for legal proof that their packages endangered moral values, authorities produced late night recorded conversations (in court) they had FORCED themselves to listen to, at length, that certainly had lascivious content. (Not creepy-- only concerned for the betterment of the nation.) Meanwhile, this fantasy realm roiled under the extreme pressures of not drugs, sex and rock’n’roll, but food, lack of food, health and education, telephonic vulgarity and politico-religious tensions. A stage was indeed set. “Profit from folly rather than participate in it”, as a wise man once claimed.
heard no evil, and spoketh no evil. Their one and only permissible pleasure, food, was now relegated to the level of a royal fetish. The many headed monster that plagued the nation, let’s call it EMRA, its Electronic Media Regulatory Authority was too busy regulating anything that may get in the way of vulgar activities practiced within the safe walls of every home. It was a testament to how much they cared. Conception being this fantasy realm’s first priority, sexual innuendo was allowed to sell everything but protection. A condom ad featuring a beautiful bride and a perfect wife, who makes the husband the envy of the neighborhood, was banned (many postulate that this could be on feminist grounds, after all, a good wife should not be considered a possession to show off.) The ire that befell this ad (which was certainly banned but to the mirth of the ad-makers, everyone had viewed it within the first week of its launch) was exemplary.
Someone took a look at the stage, and had a brainwave. Left, right and center, amongst images of Indian actresses parading lawn prints on billboards, the people of this fantasy nation Conception were enticed by something newer, something being this better. Foooooood (not just food). fantasy ‘Fooooood’ with an “Mmmm….” and approrealm’s first priate sound effects. Love at first bite! People felt the need to unbuckle their belt to eat a mere burger. Women painted their lips like Marilyn Monroe and opened wide simply to ingest the giant, mega-sized burger. Satisfaction would be an understatement, it was declared, if all these instructions were followed correctly and in sequence.
priority, sexual innuendo was allowed to sell everything but protection.
The downright creativity of speech in place of its freedom had to be applauded. The things the inhabitants of this fantasy nation could not utter over the phone or in sms-es (such as the word ‘butt’ or ‘bum’) were spread around in an improved fashion, such as the ‘Bumzees’. Late night phone conversations may have run something like, “Feel like having bumzees tonight, kind of hardees”, or ,“Today’s surprise test was so hardees that it kicked my bumzees”.
Under a news report about the taboo ad featuring a glamorous newly wed and a happy home, an electrical engineer (according to his twitter id) commented, “I was first one to complain about this ad to -EMRA , I would like to praise -EMRA for their services and showing their concern to help better the society”. And how may we conclude this fantasy story? With a happy ending in which each part of the puzzle fits contentedly into place, of course.
The inhabitants of this realm were newly inspired to inconceivable levels of burger eating, burger eating which now felt somehow more personal, more intimate, more satisfying and subsequently took the place of late night immoral phone conversations and texting. Thus proving, that in this imaginary country suffering from extreme pressures of not ‘drugs, sex and rock’n’roll’, but food, lack of food, health and education, telephonic vulgarity and politico-religious tensions, the law makers and authorities knew exactly what they were doing.
The imaginary nationals of this realm ultimately saw no evil, 2013

MISHA LAKHANI
ÉLAN Khadijah Shah did justice to her reputation as one of the most sought-after designers for bridal wear. With one breathtaking emsemble after another from her ‘Sultanate Collection’ she wowed the audience. However some of the pieces were reminiscent of her last collection and that was a bit boring.
SADAF MALATERRE Sadaf made her bridal week debut with a collection that drew inspiration from butterflies, colours and nature. While the flowy skirts were far too casual for a bridal collection, we loved the bright chiffon and jamawar saris.
For someone so new to the fashion industry Misha pospossesses maturity as a designer and has already developed a signature style.. She not only creates trends ( flats, sheer net jackets, velvet slips) but she keeps getting better. ‘Bohe‘Bohemian Heiress’ was a cohesive, beautiful collection of short coats set against long kalidars, sheer shirts layered over lengha cholis, kalidars, sheer saris, long coats and angharkas.

KAMIAR ROKNI The ‘Orientalist’ was inspired by the glory and fascination that captivated the West when they first encountered the East but fell short of what it set out to do, save a few outfits like this stunning ensemble ( we wish more outfits were designed along these lines). We are confident that with time The House of Kamiar Rokni will find their signature style and do well.
DEENA RAHMAN Newcomer Deena showed a collection that seemed inspired by all her favourite designers (with hints of HSY, Bunto, Elan etc) except the pretty tissue pieces with antique work which stood out and should be developed into her signature style. It was a promising debut for such a new designer & very brave to launch on such a big platform so soon.
ALI XEESHAN Ali knows how to put a great show together. The drama and excitement he creates is exhilarating to watch. As usual his ‘Jaageer’ collection had all the right ingredients : dramatic cuts, opulent embellishment, bold accessories and Humaima Malick as his showstopper. Are his collections wearable? You decide,.

SANIA MASKATIYA FAHAD HUSSAYN The collection featured a range of intricate thread embroideries, metallic ribbon work, custom casted chain embroideries. We LOVED the cotton outfits paired with dull gold zardozi, gota and panni work in vintage finishes. The typical embellished ensembles failed to impress.
Staying true to the brands’ signature aesthetic of contrasting materials and patterns, ‘Tilism’ was a brave collection with playful separates with a range of silhouettes (lehngas, cropped pants, cholis, capes and jackets). It was not a conventional bridal collection & some pieces probably won’t do as well commercially but the collection showed Sania’s love for growth & experiment.
SANA SAFINAZ The designer trio showcased a collection of traditional ensembles, with a twist and took risks with the use of cotton & bold motifs. Their edgier pieces like this one were fun and exciting compared to the typical embellished ones which lacked their signature finesse.

ISFANDYAR ZAMAN
It is 4 pm European Central Time and aboard Lufthansa 1705 lovely instructions are belted out by the stern ladies running the show. As we ascend from the city Sofia the surrounding majestic Vitosha looks green and deceptively pristine. It hides the daily protests ,which were sparked by the appointment of Delyan Peevski- a media mogul who heads the national security agency. His appointment was later revoked but daily protests against the alleged corrupt nature of the Bulgarian government regime continued. As many a great nations that fail to reach the skies -Bulgaria like our nation remains mired in politics that is detrimental to all. Two hours later, however, as we land in Munich and just hours before German elections, one is hit by how at times a truly great leader can make a great nation greater. Mutti is everywhere. Mutti refers to Angela Merkel and it means mother. There can be no greater compliment for a politician. Angie was just elected as third time chancellor and almost with an outright majority. Anyone familiar with the post-war set up of the German system will realise how big a feat that is. The set up was made in a way to ensure that it will never allow a leader as unchallengeable as Hitler to come into power 46
PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE
2013
and yet the immense popularity of Mutti has tested that system to the limits. She is the first leader to be born on the Eastern side of the Berlin wall and is a lady that remains modest in every aspect of her life, from living in her own private apartment to doing the groceries. She has kept the German economy chugging while the rest of Europe collapsed. She inspired a national spirit which saw workers taking volunteer pay cuts to ensure that co-workers are not fired, she fought for the Euro and essentially runs the show in Europe. All this whilst having the highest popularity rating of all leaders in the continent. She is a leader, a mother and a hero unlike any other. Speaking of unsung heroes seeing how the US government is in shutdown one cannot but blame Obama for possibly overtaking Bush as one useless leader. The shutdown can be blamed on the Republicans as they try to change the healthcare law which got passed earlier by the book. However, Obama’s aloofness and inability to take out the knives make him appear as a weak leader. His weakness was exposed by the Syria fiasco, to be lectured on freedom and human rights by Putin’s editorial in the New York Times shows how he has completely lost the plot. If you say there is a red line then once crossed do something about it. Personally, pained as I was to see images of the children gassed in Syria, I did not see that it was anyone’s place to attack Assad. There are other means. However Obama came across the episode as the ultimate loser and a 90 pound weakling, forget the fact that he has the biggest army the world has ever seen. The Nobel committee deliberated on who to award the peace price ( Malala definitely deserved it), I hope they rescind Obama’s prize. Regardless of the PTI rhetoric I believe that it’s illegal for anyone to use drones to kill. Everyone has a right to a fair trial. What the drones are doing to the innocent populations is an even greater issue. Obama inherited two wars but the counter insurgency strategy of the US will cause many more. We need to learn from the Israel’s public relations machine and plaster pictures of the innocent all over the world. However, it is best to just get it away from all and for that I would recommend Ruth Ozeki’s ,“A tale for the time being”, truly a book that you do not want ever to end. She takes you on a little Japanese girl’s adventures in French main themed cafes in Tokyo to education of the Kamikazes. Also if you happen to be in Munich then do pop over the Octoberfest, though a mammoth affair- the Keifer tent manages to stay the place to be. Until another sojourn...

You seem to be coming to a much anticipated turning point in your life. You will finally make that important decision. The winds of change and something new is in the air. Take a rational stance and don’t hold back on the decision. It will be the right one, concerning love or work. You have had your fair share of stress, it’s time to put your feet up and relax.
Your expenditures seem to outweigh your income. You seem to be overcommitting and footing the bills. You’re not being fair to yourself or anyone else, if you fail to clarify such an important issue. Be careful who you spend your time with this week and what you may be promising, as you simply can’t do what is expected.
Mercury is in retrograde after the 22nd which is not the best news, so be careful and make any important decisions before then, while your brain is working at optimum level. You’re feeling exceptionally worried and there seems to be some chaos in your life. Focus and figure out exactly what’s bothering you and address each situation on its own and not all at once. Advice from friends could come in handy.

Currently you may be feeling a bit sluggish and bored with work. You may be thinking about wrapping up work and trying out something new. People may have been encouraging you to do so. However, there’s a time for everything, hang in there, and you will surely reach your goals. What you are doing now will definitely lead you to success; you need to be patient and tone down the anxiety.
Dear Leo, this is a great week for you. Great news seems to be pouring in from every aspect of your life (love, family, fame and fortune) and it’s all in your house this week. People will make amends and lost friendships will be found again. Spend time with family and loved ones as they have been worried about you and will be happy to see that you’re feeling much better again.
Someone seems to want to take advantage of you and perhaps wants you to lend them some money or invest in something. You already have a lot of expenses and this is not the time to be bailing someone else out. However the good news is that soon you will get some good news related to inheritance or property which will set your mind at ease.
You normally have friends and family surrounding you, however as of late you may have been feeling a bit lonely and are finding it hard to connect with others. There is a certain someone, a lover perhaps from the past or someone new who will be there for you, trust this person as their feelings are quite sincere towards you.
Perhaps without realising you have been unusually candid about work or certain financial issues of late. Are you really prepared to let these issues threaten relationships that mean a lot? Keep your temper in check as having an argument can potentially jeopardise what you are trying to do.

Great things are happening to you this week Dear Sag. Your social calendar seems to be full and you are feeling very loved by others and want to offer all that you have to offer. It’s time to plan that romantic date that you have been putting off for a while, your dynamism can be advantageous, take full advantage of the stars being right behind you and have some fun.
This week brings about a word of caution. You may be accident prone so be careful while driving and don’t try out a new restaurant. It is best to stay with the familiar. You may have lost your patience with one or two individuals recently for various reasons, but your reputation must be protected and preserved. The only person watching out for you this week is you is, so be your own best friend and try to stay out of trouble.
Even though this is an unusually romantic time for you, your friends and loved ones may not be completely happy about your plans, as they think you are being unrealistic. You’re simply feeling the need to follow your dreams and be who you are, without constant interference so it’s time to tell them to leave you alone as you know what’s best for you.
Feel free to discuss your travel plans and exciting new ventures. Also most of you who are single are likely to meet that special someone. If you are in a relationship you will feel a lot of love for your partner. Your enemies are also giving you a break and taking away their envious eyes. It’s best to take advantage of this great time for you to be free of all your worries and have some fun.
