FOR THE LOVE OF EDUCATION BY TALIA SHAHBAZ
(disclaimer: I do think nerds are hot.) Remember when you were little? Eager to start a new school day every morning. The Mon-Fri cycle feeling insanely short. The fragrance of honest hard work mixed with sweaty socks that were part of the uniform in every season. The melodious voices and sweet smiles of your teachers, who welcomed you every day. Oh, and how easy was it to feel like you belonged! Making tiny friends your size, simply a cinch. ‘Cause kids, you know, are all friendly and nice to each other and just want peace on earth). Uhhhhhh...not quite. If you, my friend, were like me the few lines above are as alien to you as being friends with a Taliban, or knowing a Martian. Call me a lazy good for nothing but the true story is more like the following: Dreading the new school day every morning. Panicking if you 30

got too much attention from the annoying know-it-all girl bully and her gang who used to go around pushing kids during break time by locking arms and making a lethal, mobile human chain. Giving your lunch to a ‘FRIEND’ as a part of a deal every day, who definitely looked like she ate more than her own lunch. The teachers, their voices and faces seeming like a hideous, garish, senseless carnival. School was a psychedelic horror show- the kind depicted so aptly in Pink Floyd’s iconic song. Despite all this, every day you went to school hoping for a little recognition, approval or praise. Perhaps a pat on the back. And it wasn’t just you—the bullies, the sissies, the cool ones, and the nerds- we were all hoping for the same thing. Starting a food fight didn’t get you any praise. Hiding your math notebook for months from your math teacher didn’t either. Nothing amazing you did, like climbing trees and jumping from your roof to the neighbours’ roof, even after they got that barbed wire thing to keep you out, was commended by the grown-ups. The way you used to slide your thin, childish body through two barbed wires was no less amazing than Catherine Zeta Jones dancing through lasers to steal a treasure from a high security museum in a Sean Connery flick- but, no. Not grounds for praise, or even a trophy.
You even put all your effort into every science project, every school play but somehow it just didn’t work. No, a certain breed of student was getting all the acclaim, and in your school it usually tended to be one out of a group of four, five students. They all had one thing in common.
love nerds?
You were beginning to notice this pattern.
Malala’s story has everything to set the right tone across all borders of race, religion, country: a little girl who just wants education. Who would turn against that?
When you were about to finally develop your first academic interest in say, debating, and you really worked hard to give it a shot, guess who your teachers and the school mistress picked instead of you for the big speech? You stayed up way past your bed time, working hard to express your real point of view, and even your dad thought maybe this one didn’t turn out so bad after all. Next morning, the head mistress didn’t even bother to listen to your speech. It was a done-for deal. They picked the nerd. Again. Did the nerd talk about how much kids loved to eat ice cream? Pull hair? Eat candy? Play Kish? Was she transparent, honest, natural, or spontaneous? No. Anything the nerd did or said, was predictable. It fit into the adult perception of ‘intelligence’. The grownups loved it. Her speeches smacked of ratta-fication and always started with, “Honourable Principal, Respected teachers, and my dear fellow students….”.
They always say good things about the school. They are never known to complain or cause a fuss or even, start a revolution. They are saying and doing things that fit into the big order.
If you have a heart or a mind, if it’s not the little girl-ness that will get you, it might be her cause: Education. It’s the right catchphrase anywhere. How can you criticise a little girl with a dupatta over her head, who only wants education? Who got shot on her way to school?
School was a psychedelic horror showthe kind depicted so aptly in pink floyd’s iconic song.
She would talk about how much she loved education and doing homework. Her example was used to put all of us in our place at every point and turn, because all of us hated homework. What became of her is another story and one I cannot tell here, but let’s just say the pressure mounted and exploded in her late teens.
For some reason, all the Anti- Malala hype reminds me of this. An instinctive aversion towards anyone who says they love school. It must be a prejudice born of our privileged experiences; but in our experience, the statement doesn’t ring true coming from a child. It is, indeed, nothing short of miraculous and impressive. If you are a female student in your teens studying hard and longing for achievement in a Pakistani school, you may be feeling a tad short changed at the moment. Specially if you are a student in our northern region, for example, in Hunza—where the female literacy rate is said to be higher than the male literacy rate. Let’s forget about how other students who truly love education are feeling at the moment. The question is, why does a school
“Dear sisters and brothers, I am not against anyone. Neither am I here to speak in terms of personal revenge against the Taliban or any other terrorists group. I am here to speak up for the right of education of every child. I want education for the sons and the daughters of all the extremists especially the Taliban. I do not even hate the Talib who shot me.” Well, when a child says things like that, she doesn’t have to hate anyone. The world will do that for her. It will set a stage, start a chain reaction. Who, sitting on the other end of the world, will not hate the talib who shot her, or the other taliban festering in a country that can’t get it’s head or ass straight?
Not hating that talib and anything associated with him would be downright unpredictable, even if you’ve never been to this strange country where females are regularly stopped from educating themselves. Blasts happen at the same time, someone calls in, claiming responsibility. It’s all an estimate, because no one actually caught those people and verified their claims, or got any more information out of them regarding their origin or how the organisation is run. We only know what we are told. Ancients claim that chaos always follows a pattern. That is definitely true in Pakistan’s case. The timing of each revelation, each blast, of what is highlighted in the international media, it is creating a pattern. And if this pattern leads to what it’s beginning to look like, we will have more things to worry about or feel good for than Malala winning us an A grade or a Nobel prize in the international media. 2013

first dates
BY NATASIA KHALID
First dates can be very tricky. So many little decisions- from what to wear to what to say. Find out what these guys have to say about the perfect first date.
Azeem Paul, 23 International Business & Finance student, London Abdullah Gillani 25 Student, Prague Describe your ideal first date. parMy ideal first date should involve something both of us can par take in together like bowling or an amusement park. How would you dress on your first date? I would dress casually and not put in too much effort. What are the questions you would ideally ask on your first date? I would ask if she could pick me up for our date because that takes of a lot of worry. I’d ask her about her hobbies, if she ever went skydiving, if she knows how to cook and if she visits her dentist regularly. What are the questions you just don’t want to answer on your first date? relationI don’t want to answer anything regarding work or past relation ships. Other than that I would answer pretty much everything. Is there a celebrity who you’ve always dreamt of taking out on a first date? Not really.

Describe your ideal first date. Not that I’ve ever thought about this but I guess taking the perfect girl out on a boat, catching fresh fish and cooking her a meal would make a good impression. How would you dress on your first date? Smart casual. Shorts with a shirt and a pair of very comfortable shoes. What are the questions you would ideally ask on your first date? I’m not much of a planner but I guess I’d ask her about her overall likes and dislikes just to figure out the things we have in common. I’d try to find out what her outlook is on issues I feel strongly about, but I wouldn’t probe too much or ask personal questions as I wouldn’t want to make her awkward. What are the questions you just don’t want to answer on your first date? Honestly I’m open to all questions apart from my past because that’s just asking for trouble on the first date. Nonetheless, I would bring it up at some point later myself if the first date is successful. Of course, questions relating to material possessions would be a turn off. Is there a celebrity who you’ve always dreamt of taking out on a first date? Liv Tyler and Angelina Jolie. Together!
Kamil Noorani, 23 Goverment & International Relation Student at the University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia
Describe your ideal first date. Ideally, it would have to be playing tourist around Sydney - exploring bars and restaurants tucked away in random alleyways. How would you dress on your first date? Casual for sure. What are the questions you would ideally ask on your first date? Can’t really sum it up as a list, but I would definitely use humour to keep the conversation flowing. Also, I would try to learn more about her experiences, as opposed to prodding questions that are obtrusive. Possible questions to learn more about her could be something along the lines of the most adventurous thing she’s ever done to the places in the world she would like to explore most. What are the questions you just don’t want to answer on your first date? Some questions that come to mind that I would not want to answer are: What are you thinking? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What would you like to do for a living? Is there a celebrity who you’ve always dreamt of taking out on a first date? Umm can’t say that I’ve fantasised about taking any celebrity out on a date.
Samad Saleem, 26 Musician, Karachi Describe your ideal first date. Good food, good wine, good conversation and getting lucky by the end of the night. How would you dress on your first date? I’d probably wear a black button down shirt and jeans. Keep it chill. What are the questions you would ideally ask on your first date? What kind of music are you into? What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done? How many relationships have you been in in the past? What’s your ideal guy like? What are your political views? What are the questions you just don’t want to answer on your first date? How many girls have you been with? What are your future plans? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Do you like children? What are your thoughts on commitment? Is there a celebrity who you’ve always dreamt of taking out on a first date? Plenty, but I’ve been in love with Mahira Khan for years now, if you’re asking locally. Internationally it’s still good old Megan Fox for me.

BRIGHT YOUNG THING Meet Maira Chinoy- young, bright & talented she is all set to launch her furniture and accessories line in Lahore. Find out more about her here! 42
PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE
2013
Tell us about Maira Chinoy Designs? How did it all start? I completed a double major in Sociology and Communication Studies in Canada. After graduating, I realised that I wanted to do something more fulfilling, something I truly enjoyed. Having lived in Canada for 10 years I had the opportunity to be involved in all kinds of art/design and interior shows and exhibitions. I felt a sense of excitement when I recognised that interior design was my calling. I went on to study interior design in Florence, Italy. I was fortunate enough to work with top architects and designers such as Naheed Mashooqullah and Najmi Bilgrami Collaborative (NBCL). Yet, I needed to work with my hands and create the designs which were brewing in my mind. Maira Chinoy Designs was the next step and I had my first showcase in January 2013. Tell us about your academic qualification? Do you have a professional degree in interior design? Having lived in North America, I was drawn to the European design aesthetic and lifestyle. I chose Florence, a city that I had been to numerous times and loved. There I pursued a Masters degree in Interior Design. The program was for a period of two years and focused on not only interior design but also furniture and product design. How would you characterise your personal style, including your preferred colour scheme? My style is a romance between classic and contemporary. I am brave with my designs and enjoy experimenting with different elements and techniques. The end result is an eclectic and interesting collection of unique products. I love colour! I feel it is not necessary to be tied down to colour scheming and matching but rather that the colours flow and compliment each other to create a mood or bring the personality of a space to the forefront. What sort of interiors/ furniture appeal to you personally? In tandem with my personal style, I am mostly drawn to a combination of classic and contemporary interiors, which are enhanced by fun expressive elements, whether it is a sculptural piece or a fabric print. What advice do you wish someone had given you about finishing your own home when you first started out? The best advice is to not make rushed decisions, take your time to create the space you desire. And of course, don’t be afraid to try new things! We are always eager to know the "latest" colour, design, and furnishings trend. Can you comment on how homeowners might create
interiors that are up-to-date but classic? In any space, the right accents can enhance the entire room and experience. For example, while keeping furniture classic, homeowners can add unique fabrics or sculptural pieces to breathe new life into their interiors. Maira Chinoy Designs has some great pieces, both functional and decorative, which will provide an elegant addition to any space. It is important to bring in new form, or change palletes and patterns. Who are some of the artists, locally and internationally that inspire your work? I find a little bit of inspiration in everything and I find that I have an acceptance and appreciation for all kinds of artists. From Monet’s work where the eye has to focus to see colours blending and transforming a vision, to Michelangelo’s work which offers a perfect finished image with line and form; I feel that both of these artists inspire my style equally. Similarly, interior designers that inspire me range from the formal elegance of Barbara Barry to the creative minds of Jonathan Adler and Philippe Starck – their designs leave an impression. Locally, I have always loved the work of Gulgee. What is the most frustrating aspect of your job? And the most rewarding one? Any work has it’s frustrating aspects. However, these are the challenges that makes one more determined. It is a learning process. It is most rewarding to be able to do what you are passionate about. I especially enjoy working hands on and seeing my imagination take form. Many people like the idea of updating their interiors for the seasons. What techniques do you use to transition your home from spring/summer to autumn/winter? Trade up your dull upholstery for some fun, printed fabric or add a bright coloured piece. Minor alterations such as flowers in the summer and candles in the winter, can also be appealing. While designing furniture where do you draw inspiration? I am inspired by the diverse approaches to architecture and design. My decorative accessories and furniture are also inspired by elements of nature, and my finishes and techniques reflect my time in Italy. What are the future plans regarding Maira Chinoy Designs? I am showcasing in Lahore on the 1st and 2nd of November at Home Couture outlet just of M.M. Alam Road, after which I will start on a new collection. I hope to continue creating more unique products and interiors not only locally but internationally as well. Ahead of me lies an exciting journey of design and creativity!

Mercury is still in retrograde at the beginning of this week; however as you cross the 30th of October, your situation will become a lot more clearer. Your relatives as of late may be driving you up the wall and putting unnecessary pressure on you, making you do something you don’t want to do. Go with your gut instinct, but when in doubt don’t do. for good luck: wear red or red coral.
Those of you who are in a relationship are now ready to commit. You have made the right decision, this is the one! Once you make certain important decisions about your relationship, you will automatically feel lighter and happier. Things seem to be falling into place now, without you having to work hard or planning for it. for good luck: wear white or opal.
It’s an extremely good week for your love life, as Venus comes into your stars on the 30th. You’re getting married, or meeting someone new. Various formalities of a forthcoming contract will have to be confronted, but you’ll gradually realise that other people involved are uncomfortable when finances are being discussed. Try to stay ahead of the game and mastermind the situation. for good luck: wear green.
There seems to have been obstacles in your course of action lately. You may have been struggling with a home or work matter, however all that is about to change. Your luck is finally back. However, a word of caution, out of pure habit you may be revealing people’s secrets and this is most likely to get you into trouble this week. for good luck: wear pearls.

Someone has been meaning ill towards you, this person is not necessarily someone you know. There may be someone trying to trick you into meeting them. You will however avoid any mishappenings if you use caution and be weary of people who you don’t know well. for good luck: wear green or emeralds.
Your romantic partner may be playing a game of hide and seek with you, you may be thinking that they are having their doubts, some of them may be, but rest assured you will know whether they are here to stay or go after the 30th of this month. You’re travelling somewhere old and familiar to meet friends or family. for good luck: wear zircoin or silver.
One or two people are becoming to demanding, but try not to focus purely on their faults rather their vitrtues. Deep down you know that you want to put your needs before anybody else’s right now. However it has to be a time of compromise if you are to avoid splits or ruptures within the home or workplace. for good luck: wear red or red coral.
