ADDICTED

TO BEAUTY

BY TALIA SHAHBAZ

Fix your face, Ruin your self esteem So just last week, I went to get my threading done. I was not broke then. I was tired, on my way back from work, disgruntled at having driven through heavy traffic and sleep deprived. “Had a lot on my mind…”, like any tough guy would say, but as all you girls out there already know there is no excuse for facial hair so it had to be done. My inner tough guy bridled at the thought of submitting myself to the threading chair, which is a lot like the dentist’s chair. It takes patience. After making the supreme effort to stay put while someone else plucks tiny hairs out of my skin (which is also a lot like an annoying form of torture used somewhere, I’m sure), I hear the words: “Hai, aap ki skin ko kya ho gaya hay? Aap facial kerwaa lain. Aap kay pores kaafi barray hain naa.” I have pores? And they are big. No too big. 32

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2013

Needless to say, I had never heard that one before. My friends have complained of similar experiences, when the girl doing their threading will make an offhand comment about the state of one’s skin which is completely unasked for— I knew this rationally. Emotionally, I was flummoxed. One might say it’s an invasion of space, but really it’s all for our own good. My inner tough guy got me home safe and sound. Yet, within 24 hours, I had Body Shop’s latest Tea Tree Oil Pore Minimiser and about 5 other products to improve my skin. I can still remember chanting this under my breath as I push the Body shop door open, “Only buy necessities.” Turns out, a lot falls under necessities. Now I wondered, maybe that almost 5000 rupee Toni&Guy facial (rejected for its high cost) was actually feasible? But I was broke-but-happy. This surge of serotonin was enhanced by more purchases of the chocolate desserts variety. I

had handled my enlarged pores and could proceed with my life unhindered by my threading lady’s offhand comment. Did you know that in this current age, there exists a way of dealing with every kind of skin imaginable? Is your skin oily, combination, red, blue, dry or normal? Who knew there were so many ways of being wrong when you have a woman’s skin?

and fashion. The world may poke fun at women funding a billion gazillion dollar industry while orphans starve in third world countries, but what about the exorbitant salaries male athletes command? Huh? What about cricket, and soccer and the cash spent on all that? What about the gazillion dollar porn industry which—being an exact male counterpart of the cosmetics industry—caters mostly to men? Without saving orphans, I might add.

There are those who argue that no matter what, cosA typical female buying cycle (as opposed to more bio- metics are to be scoffed at. of improving upon yourself.

It is an interesting thing to be a woman. Instead of cricket, guns, and other questionable yet external pursuits, your innate femininity lies in the art of improving upon yourself. A friend of mine with an artistic bent, rather good at painting mini landscapes on her eye lids, used to say, “It’s just a disguise”, referring to the makeup she never went anywhere without. A lot of us would agree with this, in a way. Make up is a disguise that frees you to be yourself, larger than yourself, larger than life. To this end, men rely on capes, masks, suits, bad super hero movies and comics, the TV series Mad Men, and above all, their large egos, while women aren’t even allowed to have large pores. All is clearly not right with the subconscious of the world. One legit way to broadcast our inner divas to the world and not hear a bad word about it, is definitely cosmetics

The most beautiful make up of a woman is passion, says Yves SaintLaurent. If that’s really the case, what of this passion for makeup that all beautiful woman have? Why is it that nothing can make us happier than feeding the beauty industry addiction? Perhaps something in this passion speaks to our inner femininity, our inner ‘Diva’, in this crazy mostly patriarchal world. If you’re like me, though, you’re more inclined towards this statement from yet another Beauty bigwig, “I’m a big believer in that if you focus on good skin care, you really won’t need a lot of makeup” (Demi Moore) Right. Let’s start with cleanser, toner, scrubs, two-in-one masks, day creams, night creams, lip plumper, pore minimizers, oil absorbers, skin matt-ifiers and skin lighteners. 2013

How would you define your personal style? Trendy. I think the way I dress inevitably influences my work and I end up creating a fusion between the latest designs on the international catwalks and our traditional heritage, with my very own touch. What’s the best thing anyone has ever said about your work? Can’t recall anything specific but I am grateful that in a short period of time I have a loyal clientele that appreciates the originality of my designs.

Who do you look up to? My father, Tahir Azam.

How would you describe your childhood? The best. What do you value most in your friends? Honesty, loyalty and dependability. Who are your fashion influences and inspirations? Valentino, Lanvin & Isabel Marant are currently my top three. What is your greatest fear? Losing my loved ones. 40

THE

MARVEL DESIGN

Meet Attiq Ahmed- architect, professor & furniture designer.Find out more about him here! 44

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2013

Why were you inclined to make furniture? For the simple pursuit of beautiful things. How long have you been making furniture? I started making furniture 13 years ago with a series of basic tables for my family’s farmhouse. I then accelerated the pace around 8 years ago when I set up my architectural practice. What is your design philosophy? The outlook we have at the studio is to keep our designs practical, specially if something is beautiful. What’s your most favourite piece and why? The design I love the most is a basic straight lined number we call the Beacon sofa. It’s just incredibly comfortable and non fussed. Does your personality reflect in your design? I’ve got a restless mind and I am quite interested in several things and several aesthetics. Similarly the designs I produce are not about highlighting one particular aesthetic or fondness for a type of material, but really about fitting into a scheme while standing out. What do you think is a perfect room or a house? One reflective of and shaped by the person or persons living there, by their comfort and most importantly for themselves. Statement houses rarely live up to anything beyond the statement. What is the future of furniture in Pakistan? Do you think people are buying unique pieces and appreciating art? Great future for furniture design and consumption in Pakistan but only if our design schools can hone well trained designers who are contemporary yet connected to the richness of this land. Who do you think makes really good furniture internationally? Love what Robert Kuo, Established & Sons, Christian Liaigre and B&B Italia are up to. How many pieces do you make of the same kind? Awesome you asked. Turning Tables is an artisanal furniture design practice and our focus is on design excellence rather than bulk turnover. To answer your question. We make 20 pieces of each design, stock 1 and sell 19. After a design has been produced 20 times it is discontinued. What is important to know before you start placing furniture in a room? It's dimensions. How important is colour? Colour establishes a visual field that can be enervating or invigorating. It is extremely important.

Who are your favourite artists and why? In terms of artists, I believe Lahore is home to a staggeringly high proportion of practitioners making fantastic work. Of the artists in my collection. my absolute favourite is Faiza Butt. Her work is both visually astute and dexterously executed while being intellectually satisfying. Fareeda Batool, Adeel uz Zafar, Waseem Ahmed, Salman Toor, Fahd Burki and Komail Aijazuddin’s works would cap this list. What pieces do you collect? I tend to stick with homegrown talent and collect work that to my eye is either just beautiful or somehow appeals to my humour or intellect. Nothing too serious. Nothing too dark. Your building your new house tell us about it? It’s a cross between a Manhattan loft and an English manor house, inside a haveli - loftily and crazily enough. In deference to it’s location in Lahore the house will be a red brick number but with a lot of white. I’ll be using courtyards and verandas and negotiating energy issues through passive systems. What are your favourite buildings in Pakistan and why? Nayyar Ali Dada’s Alhambra Arts Council here in Lahore and Thomas Payette’s Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi are, I feel the best public buildings built since independence. The architects at both locations bring in cultural and climatic concerns seamlessly into their architecture while using local building materials in a new way. Do you believe education in the field of architecture and design help? Absolutely. No two ways about it. You may be incredibly gifted but you need to know your craft and how it’s practiced and theorised. What advice would you give to newcomers? The best thing to do is to be prepared to handle all aspects of production. From client relations to design to market knowledge, timeline and site management etc. The whole nine yards in short. The way to achieve this Herculean task is to take one step at a time and take the five years of architecture school very seriously. However, architects should be fun and have a bit of wanderlust too. Think procedurally not formally. You are also a professor at NCA what would you say about the new talent and what they have to learn? The kids are absolutely great and come up with fantastic off the wall ideas that really are quite cutting edge. The only problem is the reluctance most students have to run that extra mile that’s required to really prove their point. Here’s hoping my colleagues at the NCA and I can inspire our students so they approach their craft with more integrity, pride, and the belief that good architecture and city planning can really help people at the receiving end of our service. How can one buy your furniture? Currently we don’t have a shop, but we’re setting up one next year. At the moment we’re retailing through word of mouth and the web. Look out for the Facebook Turning Tables page next month. 2013

It’s time for a change Dear Aries, Venus is in your stars and your love life is going to get an energy booster. It’s a week to consider your options, with Venus moving into your romance zone, you might ask yourself who to be with, and if this is the right option, luck is definitely on your side as most of you will find true love in this period. So look your best, as you will be very attractive! Have fun.

Sometimes saying less is the best approach, no matter how much you want to tell someone exactly what you think, it’s not always the best approach. At the moment you should execute caution in every aspect of your life, think before speaking as your opinions are not very welcome. Drive carefully and look after your health!

The good news is that Venus arrives in your romance zone, so whether single or attached, life is set to become a lot more loving and fun. This goes for creative projects too so if there is a hidden artist within you, now’s that time to put your talents on display. Sometimes it pays to think smaller, a full moon suggests you develop your skills closer to home.

for good luck: wear white or opal.

for good luck: wear green

You are almost towards completion of a huge project and are looking at the finishing line. But a word of caution before telling people about your super achievement let it come to a complete end. It is best to let things happen before they actually do, you will have complete bragging rights once the time has come! Good luck and well done in advance!

There is a real sense of destiny about a romantic encounter or anything connected to being creative this week. It’s the kind of thing you don’t go looking for it will find you. The only way you might give it a nudge to hurry it along is to put yourself in situations you wouldn’t normally be in because if you always do the same thing, you’ll always get the same thing.

You need to put your foot down where your values are concerned, especially in relationships. Stay clear about what you will and will not put up with, especially as your ruling planet Mercury is now moving ahead in your partnership zone. Talking things through will be easier from now, so long as you think more of your own self worth.

You may have been feeling a bit paranoid or stressed about a certain situation involving your home and loved ones. Rest assured you have nothing to worry about as it is simply in your head. Try and stay positive and surround yourself with positive energy and people that actually care about you. This time too shall pass.

How you connect with others is still at the height of importance now, make sure things are still on your terms as you have had a tendency to give far too much in recent encounters, losing sight of your own needs. Interests further afield, including love, are beckoning so open your mind and heart. Health and work also need your attention too.

for good luck: wear white or mother of pearl

You may suddenly start to doubt any decisions you may have made recently. As Jupiter is retrograding on the 8th of November this is going to create a lot of confusion and chaos in your business decisions it is best to make any important decisions before the 8th. Love is definitely on your mind whether you know it or not, you are likely to rethink your views on love.

You may think people are against you and feel people are talking behind your back, but this is simply not true. Don’t stress about things that don’t exist. You are smart, don’t let useless worries get you down. Reach out to your friends to help you relax. On a financial note your expenditures are rising, only spend when you absolutely have to and try to save as much as you can.

If there is a metal related business such as jewellery that you can enter into, it could be very fruitful for you. A work situation comes to an end allowing you to move to the next part of your career. It’s all about attention to detail; it looks like you are going to love what you do. You’re set to feeling better about yourself also. But do be proactive healthwise rather than waiting for good things to happen.

You can finally think straight again, relationships may still be a bit twitchy but it’s time to draw a line and move on from deeper financial and emotional issues. Home is happier with Venus now in the residence and you should feel more content than you have for some time. It’s set to last for a while so enjoy!

for good luck: wear red or red coral

for good luck: wear blue sapphire or blue

for good luck: wear diamonds zircoin or white.
