Sakura

a Cherry Blossom Romance by

Sania Maskatiya

Sania Maskatiya’s Sakura collection is inspired by popular Japanese culture and symbolism, representing both the beauty and fragility of life. Expect an array of bespoke mixed prints and hand embroideries across a diversity of textures in cuts and patterns that are quintessentially Sania Maskatiya. Sakura draws from the grace of the cherry blossom, the stark romance of the Japanese landscape, tea houses, turtles and treasure chests, all finding their way onto the brands design canvas. We love Sania Maskatiya for mastering the art of the digital print, for effortlessly mixing various patterns together and for always being original.

crash landing# 1 ISFANDYAR ZAMAN (Instagram@eyezaman)

The summer has come and gone. All I can hope is that many of you have managed to get some sun in and have emphatically embraced tanning. It is indeed a coming of age when we desis embrace the sun as something that render us a sun-kissed look and not something to hide from under hideous hats. So next time you venture to Cartagena (Columbia), Seminyak (Bali), or Ormara (Gwadar) ditch the SPG 60. I suggest you splash some banana boat all over your luscious self, alternately you can also use apricot kernel oil from Hunza which is known to give a golden glisten. Speaking of golden, with Messi winning the Golden ball at the Brazil World Cup (It should have been Jamie in my view), I thought why not give you a feel for the great land of the Amazon. Even a 1000 write ups on Crash Landings can’t give you an ounce of what Brazil is all about but why not give it a try. Economically speaking Brazil is an amazing story, in a decade it has gone from the sick child of the world to a global power. The social protection programs there have lifted millions out of poverty and the country is venturing its own course in the world. It remains a country of massive contrasts between the rich and the poor however it is slowly succeeding in clawing together a respectable existence for all its citizens. I do believe a single person can change the course of a nation and for Brazil it was Luna (though he had a killer team too). 48

The trek from Pakistan is rather long and the visa does take ages but it is all worth it. Everybody talks about Rio and indeed Rio is Rio however the real soul of the country lies elsewhere. A good place to start is Salvador. Salvador is also known as the African capital as this was the port where slaves were first brought in from Africa, sadly Brazil was also one of the last places to abolish slavery (1888). Thankfully the Africans kept their strong tradition of song, dance and festivals which makes the city known as the happiest place in Brazil. The city like most Brazilian cities (barring Rio) is an urban sprawl that’s bejeweled by diamonds all over (historic buildings) and a natural setting that is jaw dropping but keeps flirting with you as it hides behind concrete buildings (the ocean). Pelourinho is the Portuguese colonial part which makes you feel alive. Every night there is dance and music in its narrow streets and the magnificence of the buildings still shines through after all these centuries. I would plan in a way so that you can see the Olodum guys play their drums in the street. Olodum was a street music project started to encourage violence prone youth to take up music. The result is astonishing, all the youth in the city are now part of this project and they drum like their life depends on it. It’s a great beat and our Pappo Sain will be right at home there. In Pelourinho be sure to also have some Moqueca (fish stew) which is similar to a Goan curry but with a real kick. I would also stay at the Pestana Concento Do Carmo which is a convent converted into an oasis in the middle of the craziness of the old town. After letting it all out with the thousands of tourists you may want to see how the other side of Brazil lives. For that I suggest book a table at Lafayette (hey Zainab), catch an indie rock band at Groove (good dancing Jukkis) and spend the day at the beach on Piria Forte. For an unforgettable night out head to Barrachiro which is any true blooded Brooklynite’s dream. It’s a tire and car repair shop that turns into the hottest place at night, the crowd is great and you stand in the long line no matter how rich you are or how much of a Giselle lookalike you are (and there are many in Brazil). After the madness of Salvador, I suggest you ferry it up to Morro De Sao Paulo which is a small island 2 hours by boat. There hole yourself up at the Portalo Hotel, enjoy great music by the resident DJ Zoltan, just lounge, enjoy the sunset and the vibe of the town. On the way back though just take the small plane back as the sea is rough. For now this is enough on Brazil, I'll fill you in on Rio (thanks Paulo) in the future as the memories are too good to handle. Back in the land of the pure we are all busy with one sit-in or another. Though what is notable to mention is the tossing out of Rehman Malik by angry passengers for him delaying the flight (a good thing), and our deal CM’s infatuation with flyovers and motorways (a bad thing). On the entertainment side and reading the Goldfinch by Donna Tart these days and into good so far. That’s it from my end so till next time stay dry.

For make up I went to Natasha Khalid as we all know she is the STAR of making ordinary faces like mine into a contoured beauty! I loved my gold glitzy bronze makeup and the stunning popping orange lip colour she gave me. Sabrina gave me a high bun that gave me height and enhanced my jhoomar. A HUGE thank you to Natasha and Sabrina Khalid and the super star Aunty Bunto, you made me into my dream bride!

I wanted to be the traditional Pakistani bride. I’ve always loved that look & who better to achieve it than Bunto Kazmi. As a designer, I didn’t want to make my own jora. I knew that Aunty Bunto would do something special. She asked me what I wanted and what jewellery I would wear with it, together we came up with the gold and rust colour scheme and she suddenly came up with the brilliant idea of lace sleeves. It was genius! She gave me a stunning silver organza dupatta with beaten gold work and crystals with an antique look. The rich red embellished border was the icing on the cake.

The Feeling… In-house lawyering has brought along with it the excitement of corporate travels in my plate. The feeling: thrill, anticipation, constantly being on your toes, rushing and catching flights, being in and out of hotels, offices, decisions, getting and staying connected with your colleagues around the globe and particularly my region i.e. Asia Pacific including the UAE and then back home in less than a week; maximum 4- 5 days [including travel time]. And then doing it all over again!! Getting ready… The clock strikes 6.00 pm. It’s time to go home from a fully occupied day at the office and get going for my next trip. Get my essentials in my suit case. This time it’s Shanghai, which means almost a full day of travelling as I will be going via Bangkok and some of the long transits for me mean a lot of shopping at the duty free with my

travel diaries

ends up being amusingly fast paced. The nature of my travels… Working in a multi-national means acting multi-national too and for me that means attending the lawyers meeting on a quarterly basis; the venues of which range from Shanghai, Vietnam [Ho Chi Minh City], Singapore, India or Dubai. It’s been a very interesting experience so far; the legal conferences, the lunches, webinars, the full-day meetings and outdoor team activates giving a chance to explore the city. All your moves are planned irrespective whether it is a five minute meeting or an hour long meeting with a definite agenda. It keeps you very alert and focused yet it can be over-whelming and challenging all at the same time. My last work destination was Shanghai or at least I think so since after a while it’s like a blur as to where the last place you visited was.

travel diaries

I absolutely loved Shanghai. It’s such a cosmopolitan city, amazingly huge with extremely tall buildings which includes both modern architecture and European style buildings too. The Bund area in Shanghai is a place to visit; it’s the point where you are able to distinguish between the old and the new Shanghai. Chinese people hold their belief systems in high esteem and I was told that apparently all their construction is done keeping the notion of feng shui in mind, a concept governing spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy, taking the favourable and unfavourable effects into account. Call it superstition or just culture but feng shui plays a very important role in the lives of Chinese people.

The Food! Where do I begin about the Vietnamese food. It is by far the yummiest spicy food I have had so far. Its hot, zesty and fiery and has a distinct taste and it all tastes so great. One of the places where I had lunch was a simple, bambooed design small restaurant famous for having the Brangelina couple over. The interesting thing I got to know while exploring the place was that most Vietnamese people bury their families and have their graveyards in the family home – they have an alter dedicated to their ancestors decorated with candlesticks a way of keeping them close.

One thing I do have to admit about Shanghai is that it can be a ‘lost in translation’ kind of situation as Chinese people just do not understand English and that can be a tough spot to be in. One pointer do not forget to go without your umbrella anywhere in Shanghai – you just would not know when it starts raining again.

My next stops… So far with October dawning in, I will get going again – starting from Dubai to Abu Dhabi to Amsterdam. Writing down the Board minutes in Dubai to attending the Company’s Middle East Business conference in Abu Dhabi and then onward to attending the lawyers global conference in Amsterdam which I heard will be hosted on a big ship; yes I am very excited as I will be meeting my global colleagues based in 80 countries around the world. The last time I met them was in 2012. It makes me feel like I am living in and out of Pakistan and not only in suitcases.

travel diaries

The flavour… While all of these travels are very fast paced with maximum sleeping time of six hours these challenging experiences are so stimulating that it makes it all so worth it. It’s like just when you are getting comfortable and letting the place grow on you it’s time to head back. Till next time.

travel diaries

travel

My favourite place so far in corporate travels… Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon as some would call it left a deep and lasting impression on me. It is just so raw. The place is a mix containing such contradictions that one gets to witness. The vibe of the city is so positive and relaxed. Beautiful architecture; high end shopping - Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Versace – name it and you have all the big brands. But the US-Vietnam war has definitely left its impact in Vietnam which is hard to ignore and while on the one side you have the high end brands and colonial buildings ,on the other hand you can easily sense and smell the poverty and the badly hit economy. I have never seen so many motorbikes in my life than in Saigon. But although the roads

Then there is Amsterdam - a place where it’s all legal. That seems like a crime for a lawyer, if I may say so. Amsterdam is a small scenic city and is very lively, relaxed and chilled out. A great place to just chill out and have some fun.

travel diaries

are packed with motor bikes and old cars and it’s noisy, there are loud sounds of constant honks of irritable drivers yet there is so much beauty around that you just don’t want to leave the place with its enduring vibe.

It somehow all becomes one. , the same. These are my pit-stop travels as they are short, fully engaging.

Watch your step on Monday and through the beginning of the day on Tuesday — literally. Your physical being needs extra attention, both in terms of staying (or getting) healthy and avoiding accidents. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, taking a look at things from the other person’s perspective — whether that’s your boss, a friend or the barista at your favorite coffee shop — gives you a much better point of view. If you’re not sure how they’re seeing it, just ask; a simple question can change everyone’s day. This weekend, you’ve got some stuff to process, and you’ll want some time alone to mull it over.

The beginning of the week looks like a delightful time to be you — you can accomplish just about anything you put your mind to, and matters of the heart are definitely favored. How will you use that extra oomph, that bonus charm? From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, you’re being pulled in two directions. You’re liable to overdo it, workwise, or slack off; you burn the candle at both ends or simply blow out the flame. Attempt to find the middle ground here! This weekend, those hidden passions of yours aren’t so hidden. Explore and express them, whatever they may be.

If you expect people to read your mind at the beginning of the week, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment and conflict. Why not say it — and say it loud and clear? From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, you’re looking good, feeling good and your brain’s functioning at a high level to boot. Your follow-through may be a little lacking, though, so set reminders, leave yourself notes and get help from a more in-step friend. Rather than trying to be a superstar this weekend, relax and observe the cosmos. You just might have a revelation about your place in the universe.

leo

virgo

libra

You’re all over the little things as the week begins, and when the little things include sweet, funny and meaningful connections with those around you, well, the big things can take care of themselves. Sometime between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday, though, your ideas are likely to clash with a certain someone’s. Will you clamp onto your point of view, or will you pry that mind open enough to consider their thoughts? If you’re uncertain about something (or someone) this weekend, heed your instinct. You don’t have to decide immediately — or if you do, maybe it’s best to walk away.

Put yourself on a severe weather watch as the week begins, because a serious brainstorm is on the way. For even better results, get a few smart, creative friends in on it. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, you can take whatever ideas, feelings and instincts you’ve been having to a deeper, more meaningful level. If you’re sharing your findings, though, be prepared for responses that hit home. This weekend looks simply stellar for you. You’re saucy, sexy, smart — what’s not to love? Get inspired, and pass it on.

If life were a jigsaw puzzle, you’d be snapping that final, satisfying piece into place as the week begins. Enjoy the sense of accomplishment and the kudos that should be coming your way. Of course, then it’s on to the next set of things to fit into your personal picture, and between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday, your task may be a bit out of focus. A heart-to-heart with a friend, partner or mentor helps organize your thoughts. This weekend, the kind of puzzle you like best is a brainteaser. Your intellectual power’s turned up, so find something (or someone) intriguing to apply it to.

You may be focusing on the little things to an extreme as the week begins — or, on the other hand, you might find the details so numerous as to be overwhelming. The point? Your usual balance is off — until Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, when you’re able to walk any tightrope in a spangled outfit, looking fabulous and juggling all sorts of lovely things. These are in-the-spotlight days for you, so enjoy the glow. This weekend, your mind’s on your money — or on what you can or can’t get with your budget. Remember, there are more important things in life.
