* vernacular * traditions * settlements * cultural mapping *
The following snapshots of a book, compiled after a trip to the region of Kutch in western India, illustrate the various studies carried out by the students. Cultural mapping of the region was the primary task, accompanied by a look into the vernacular architecture and traditional building techniques. A region in flux, Kutch offers the oppurtunity for a holistic study of climate, region, traditions and built environment

Guards’ Quarters
Elephants Stables
The Guards’ Quarters was believed to have been used as a centre for practising and performing wrestling and martial arts. Carvings and decorations are very minimalistic , being true to the purpose of the building . It was a direct result of the material used granite which is extremely difficult to chisel or carve upon. Granite may have been used because it was the local stone , thus availability and cost would not have been a concern.
The elephants’ stables are located in Hampi next to the zenana enclosure built during the reign of King Krishnadevaraya in the 15th century. The monument comprises a group of 11 square capped chambers with a watch tower mounted over the central one. It is a civil structure sheltering the royal elephants.

Mahanavmi Dibba
Stepped Tank
The Vijaynagar kingdom created the planned city of Hampi which was a self established sustainable city in many aspects. The influence of festivals of the Hindu religion, namely Dussehra and Diwali and the rituals of special prayers and procession gave rise to the stepped tank which is bounded to the temple for its functioning. The holy water meant for the prayers offered on Dussehra and Diwali in the temple was sourced from the tank. An exaggeration of form, detail and form is evident from the complexity of the tank form in spite of it being used only twice a year.

A massive platform where the kings of the Empire used to sit on their thrones to observe the processions of the nine day Mahanavmi festival . It platform rises upon a natural elevation at the north-east corner of the royal enclosure. To its north a road is seen which leads to the market area. To its south is the stepped tank and the great bath, both were used for religious purposes. The structure was surrounded by vast landscapers in all directions. It was a display of imperial magnificence intended to overwhelm visitors with the power and wealth of the Vijaynagara Empire.

The Prasanna Virupaksha temple is isolated from the main central area of the city. The temple was meant to be used by villages in the surroundings areas. The temple was constructed by funds donated by a merchant on land provided by the kind. The kind while granting the land made stipulations that the temple could not compete with the royal temples hence it had to be constructed at a lower ground level. The temple even thought built for the villagers had all the elements of a complete temple complex.

* contemporary architecture * brutalism * massive volume *
Ahemdabad has great works of architects like B.V. Doshi, Charles Correa and Le Corbusier. Below are my perception and sketches of few of these structures. The spaces formed within are however contiguous and amorphous through inclined planes of domes, curvilinear planes of walls, undulating floors and non rectilinear leaning columns.
Hussain-Doshi Guffa The shells, domes and skylight protrusion of various sizes and shapes float on a part buried space and eves gutters extending over ground further accentuate this feeling and anchor the object to the ground.

Bhadra fort once believed to have 12 darwajas (gates) actually has 21 darwajas. Each of the darwaja has beautiful carvings, calligraphy and some of them even balconies. These entrances to the city has a unique name. Pretty much the area surrounding these gates have adopted the name of darwaja as the name of the locality. Lal Darwaja once stood in front of Siddi Sayyed Mosque.

BCN - BSSA 2010 EXHIBITION
The Barcelona study tour was a walk through the city exploring physical and cultural aspects. Barcelona being a planned city, can be studied at a macro level with its street grids and lively culture. At a micro level, one can see different styles of architecture like that of Gaudi and Mies Van Der Rohe. The exhibition held at BSSA was an ovreview of the Barcelona study tour. Few of the places that were visited included the Waterfront, The La Rambla street, Gaudi structures that were exhibited through picture montages, collages, videos and models. WATERFRONT Barcelona's waterfront was an old industrial land cut off from pedestrians by a highway. The growth in the city was once focused away from the waterfront, exemplified by the placement of its highway near the water, cutting it off from the rest of Barcelona and making it a polluted site. However, the city's plan for the 1992 Olympic Games changed it all. The highway was put underground, thus reconnecting the city with its water-front. And new beaches, parks, and neighborhoods filled the newly open land.
The La Rambla is a tourist pedestrian street, in central Barcelona that contains shops ,various stalls that appeal to the tourists ,markets and street performers .It begins from the center of the old part of town , Placa del Catalunya, to the port area and ends via a bridge at a entertainment centre. A 1.2 kilometer-long tree-lined pedestrian mall between Barri Gothic and El Raval, it connects placa Catalunya in the center with the Christopher Columbus monument at Port Vell. It was originally a small street flowing outside the city walls. It is the most cosmopolitan street of Barcelona with the greatest diversity of people including passerby ,shoppers,civil servants,street musicians and dancers
