The project is structured by two main ideas: the landscape as the prime-matter (1) and as a way to frame the views (2). (1) The building’s form is generated by a series of transformations that shape it to its final form. Firstly a simple extrusion rises from the earth’s platform. In function of the wanted visual framing of the landscape, the form is carved in order to open itself to the surroundings. An exception is generated; a volume that rises above the others and states itself in the site. Lastly, the high volume is separated from the ground in order to be autonomous and distinguishable. The building is therefore moulded from the land and it carves itself open to the landscape that surrounds.

(2) The way the building is located in the site derives from the strong vine orientation that generate alignments throughout the valleys and elevations in the landscape. Therefore a long access path to building is designed parallel to the vineyard, generating a gradual approach to the building while interacting with the environment. This way, the building functions also as a viewfinder. It only reveals parts of the surrounding landscape, emphasizing each single relation.

Concept 1 – Genius Loci (the spirit of the place) The use of scale and proportions from the local buildings, through a strategy of using single separate volumes. The understanding of the territorial morphology, based on the placement of the buildings along the axis of communication. We propose that same thing as we think of the brook as a structural axis from where we develop the body (we have initiated this proposal by interpreting the brook not as a problem but as an essential “piece” to the development of the project). We took part of an inevitable figure of the landscape, the one of the traditional rooftop, however we have shaped it, introducing contemporary architectural concepts.

Concept 2 – Paper cuts The design is born from a poetic reference to one of the future works that will be taught on this Scholar Centre; we take a simple sheet of paper, we fold it in a zig-zag way, and we cut a motive, finally we unfold it. Our proposal is that same thing, a parallelepiped mass (because we are dealing with the third dimension), cut in segments and then unfolded.

Concept - Friendly Hand We propose a concept of a high representative and symbolic power to the specific program. The design is born with reference to one of the possible works that will be taught at the Scholar Centre, the impression of a hand. In a first stage, the process consists on painting the palm of the hand with ink; right after we put the palm of the hand in a support (usually a sheet of paper); finally, after the hand has been removed, as a final result it appears the impression of the hand on the paper.

Maintaining the same configuration of the hand, the relationship between the palm and the fingers, we have developed a distortion in order to originate a shape that is adaptable to the site – an identical representation was thought by Le Corbusier in Chandigarth, India; ou even by Eduardo Chillida in San Sebastian, Spain.

We take part of an Arraiolos symbol, the Arraiolos Carpet (specifically its canvas). From here, abstractly, we originate a network of paths, which we designate, Inhabited Itineraries. 10

The concept of mesh is materialized through a system of longitudinal and cross paths that establish a connection between the two main spaces of the proposal, the Castle and the Windmills. Thus integrating other existing reference points of the city (eg: Pousada de Portugal, Main Church, Bus Central, Cine-Teatro, Library, etc), our itineraries work like a network that stitches everything, in order to promote a diversity of interests, whether cultural, social, recreational, etc.

Along the itineraries, there are some extensions and embedded platforms in the slopes, that work not only as a turning point, but they allow the generation of rest and leisure points. There points appear in strategic places, where the visitor can have a wide perception over the surrounding landscape.

Our Proposal is structured within a key concept; the idea of lightness.

Finally, as to its design, would not be Howe also a light label?

Through the poetics of Milan Kundera’s book, we can associate the term lightness with the term freedom.

We think so.

At the same time, wishing a “contemporary place”, a place capable of responding to different space organizations, we are wishing a free place, an uncompromising place. It is this kind of space, with and as an architectural quality, the target of the Howe label.

As an example, note the extreme lightness of the 40/4 chair whose thickness/diameters are between 9 and 13mm.

The proposal for the new nursery building contemplated the removal of the existing building, which was on a high state of deterioration, while occupying its footprint with a succession of educational gardens for the infants.

The new building is located on the area with the best solar exposure, profiting from the few sun rays that penetrate the gardens through the trees which surround the site. Thus the building is designed with a set of pitched roofs which allow for the entrance of the sunlight into the interior spaces.

The refurbishment of a single-family house in North London included a small volumetric extension and the creation of a back garden.

Due to the its strong heritage values, all the work has been focused on restoring its original features in order to gain the permission to make the new extension. The new volume accommodates a new and modern bathroom as well as a glazed access to the garden.

The aim of this project is the refurbishment of Place Lalla Yeddouna and its surrounding areas, through its openness to the river and through the creation of supportive structures.

We decided to focus on the preservation of the cultural and heritage values of Moroccan Architecture. Therefore the intervention starts from the refurbishment of the existing buildings (Fondouk Lahssair and Dar Al Iraqui), through the adaptation of parts of the old structures next to the river and finishing with the design of new buildings.

The refurbishment of an ancient industrial pavilion for the new headquarters of a company, followed a very minimal an functional idea. We wanted that the whole intervention was made with an exact response to the needs of the client.

The concept of the new façade derives from the need of making a clean structure with regular openings which correspond to the new interior programme. We have used a microperfurated undulated metal sheet to clad the whole exterior of the building, generating a curtain-like division between the interior and the exterior. This idea stands even more when the light reflects on the building throughout the day.

MIXED-USE CULTURAL BUILDING Collaboration with Coll-Barreu Arquitectos Use Educational, Cultural Status Tender Project Location Basauri, Spain Client Basauri Council Year 2011 Surface 10580,00 m2

In a time of economic difficulties in Europe, several public administrations have agreed to build a set of cultural facilities, which should share the same site, common services, design, construction and operating costs. The new building will be a superposition of a resident’s car structure, an Official Language School, a Music School, a School of the Native Language and Culture and a City Auditorium. The various uses are stacked like bars of chalk. Each institution, that once would have occupied an entire building, still retains some of its corporeal independence. The citizens can identify the building both as an addition of single units and as a whole.

João Pereira de Sousa, Ordem dos Arquitectos, 20446  Rua da Fábrica, 30, 3º andar 4050-245 Porto, Portugal  +351 916 387 452  hello@joaopereiradesousa.com asimplemind

Befitting its time, the construction has been planned with simple materials, stone and stucco, and with very controlled windows and glazing. Not only can one go through the interior, but also the roofs are accessible at different heights, some of which are configured as outdoor spaces directed towards the mountain views. The Auditorium participates in this duality between the closed and the open, and alternately it opens or closes its stage towards the valley. Again, the project is compressed, and finds its conscience in that intimacy. Unwittingly, it becomes a natural accident, a mound, a cluster or a rocky quirk.

ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER Collaboration with Coll-Barreu Arquitectos Use Cultural, Refurbishment Status Public Competition Location Atlanta, Georgia, USA Year 2011 Surface 3100,00 m2 Cost $ 8.000.000,00

The Atlanta History Center never again will have a North façade. The new pieces will slide in the sunlight without orthogonal walls, so they will always be bathed in light. A porch open to the trees, grass and flowers of Atlanta will shelter the visitors from the heat of the sun and rain water. It is an element of the tradition. The white porch is part of the history of the air and light of the South. Beyond the porch a new lobby is proposed. It is a clear, white and public room, but it retains some of the intimacy of a home. The light enters and the outside can be seen. Visitor services are clearly organized. The new auditorium and classrooms also have immediate access from the lobby. The retail area is located in the output path of visitors, fully incorporated into the lobby.

João Pereira de Sousa, Ordem dos Arquitectos, 20446  Rua da Fábrica, 30, 3º andar 4050-245 Porto, Portugal  +351 916 387 452  hello@joaopereiradesousa.com asimplemind

Inside, acting only at the entrances to the rooms, the space of collections is now systematic. It is possible to visit all the rooms in a continuous run, without returning to the lobby or to any corridor. You may also visit selected rooms only, since all have direct access from the lobby. The size and shape of each room may be determined and changed by AHC curators. The main floor opens to the South, until now hidden from the rooms. Thanks to eliminate some obstacles and open two new windows, people walking on the Museum can rest their eyes on the beautiful trees of Buckhead campus and have easy access to cafe and gardens.

Our proposal for the (new) Praça da República square reinforces all its potential as a generator space for social engagement. Its design, purposely minimal, contrasts with the more design constrained squares to the north and west. At the same time, in opposite to the other two squares we do not intend to keep Praça da República with the dense trees it has at the moment, since on one hand there are already two squares with those charateristics and, on the other, in search for shadows, we encourage the use of the open public space on the ground floor of the Library, which can be an extension of the ground floor interior program. This allows for the establishment of an urban continuum, a way to maximize the use of the public spaces.

By its shape, the proposed building intends to embrace with its concave front façades. The other two façades follow the existing alignments. The arcs (in the openings), are a reference from the architectural memories of the place and the region; structurally they allow for a continuous space without columns on the ground level; also they allow for the passage of all the technical conduits. In order to generate a single, continuous and minimal shape, the proposed building contemplates a system of vertical prefabricated concrete stripes. This way it is possible to filter the looks from the inside and the outside. At the same time, this materiality is applied to the interior of the building, not only in terms of color, but also in its texture.

The morphology/shape of the proposal arises from the “overprotection” of the ancient distillery building. It is a visual and a physical protection. It is proposed a cultural use in it, with the maximum respect and conservation of its main structure. We propose a big common space which allows a wide variety of activities. On the ground floor, the place is accessible from Derencinova, Marticeva, Subiceva and Vlaska Street, it is connected to the ancient distillery building (now an area with cultural services), and a green area born from the respect to the existing buildings on Subiceva Street.

Zagreb’s Cloud’s façade is the result of two criteria: the program that each module houses and its sun exposure. From this combination we’ll get modules optimized for each situation. Although it is a contemporary building, visual impact will be minimized, as it adapts its height to the buildings around and the façades to be preserved are incorporated into the solution. Six buildings have been designed so that they can operate independently.

We propose a building with a unique image for the campus. A building that breaks the existing gray monotony – referring not only about the pictorial issue of the Campus, but also about the “global crisis without end” – and that, at the same time, is able to captivate. The facade skin, happened through an architectural reinterpretation, it retracts the symbolic power of the IBS purpose. We used as reference the titanium nanotubes. Associated with recent discoveries, the titanium nanotubes have, among others, capacities for reuse and cheap production, becoming, this way, an inspiration for an architecture that seeks sustainability as an ideal.

In order to develop common synergies, we propose the skin of the building in prefabricated elements of a cementitious matrix material. This material reinforced with micro-fibers, has no conventional reinforcement, which could cause corrosion problems, among other features, is a very ductile material, plastic, fluid, self-compatible and allows to control the crack and therefore doesn’t crack. This skin allows the inclusion of pigmentation/oxides doesn’t need constant maintenance and lasts longer than common materials. To finish, it also allows a wide range of the architectural freedom.

PLANTA PISO -1

Our proposal for the Private School competition is based on a rectangular plan shape. With this shape we are able to strictly control its structure and to organize all the school programme in an efficient way. Because the brief asked for a school from the nursery level till the secondary school level, the programme works in a vertical way, so that the younger children can study on the lower floor, the older on the middle floor and all the services and communal spaces are located in the upper level.

The design of the façade is based on a repetition of an angulated prefabricated concrete shape that controls the entrance of natural light for the classrooms while defining a whole image to the building.

When a family-run furniture makers asked us for the design of a new and original domestic line, they were very clear about their brief: they wanted a complete line of domestic furniture with a minimal design, fairly cheap to build and that could reach a wide public around Europe. Thus, the idea for the furniture pieces also became clear: working with a single type of wood, with different finishes, using simple shapes and introducing an unique element to each object that could make it unique and distinguishable.

From a system of modular storage units till the design of chairs and tables, every object was carefully designed to be modern, young and affordable.

The brief which the Spanish designer Veronica Martínez gave me, was to produce stunning images from her designs, allowing her to build her design catalogue. She had the furniture models and some ideas, but every scene has been created with the idea of translating the conceptual ideas of the designs into everyday situations.

The use of high-end imagery allowed her to be published in magazines worldwide, to increase the sales of her products, to start producing at a bigger scale and to push forward her brand ENESSENTIA.

LETTER OF RECOMENDATION

While still an architecture student João Pereira de Sousa has actively collaborated with the studio during approximately a year and a half specifically from September 2007 until April 2009. During that period, João has accompanied the studio at all times, being able to reconcile in an appropriate way the different tasks entrusted to him with his studies; as far as I know, he has had an excellent classification with his final Graduation Project. Showing a high willingness to learn, among others, he has always revealed interesting capacities of professional level, responsibility, organization, methodology, as well as the required knowledge of the different technologies essential for the Architecture work. It will be forever recorded in my memory the fact that for his effective contribution, the whole studio owes him the prize won at the Public Competition for the Gafanha da Boa-Hora Scholar Centre in Vagos. João is also a serious person. By its unambiguous qualities, I recommend João.

May 2010 Cláudio Vilarinho
