AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM CLASSROOM APPROACHES
Maths The Australian Curriculum Classroom Approaches
The Australian Curriculum Classroom Approaches series draws together a range of contemporary approaches to curriculum design and pedagogy, consistent with the spirit and aims of the Australian Curriculum for students in years 7 to 10. Curriculum is defined as those learning experiences planned by teachers as well as the processes by which they are implemented. Each title aims to provide teachers at all stages of their careers (from pre-service to the highly experienced), with support for creating engaging teaching and learning experiences for students. Using the Understanding by Design approach the series integrates the scaffolding of literacy and numeracy, and the incorporation of communication technologies with the principles of inquiry, differentiation, authentic assessment and student-centred pedagogies. Units of work focus on performance tasks designed to maximise student engagement and promote creative and critical thinking. Each book also includes a series of ‘worked example’ units and support for teachers to design or tailor their own units to the needs of their students. Series Editors:
Australian Curriculum Classroom Approaches: Mathematics includes 16 units of work developed from the Australian Curriculum for years 7 to 10. The units provide students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge, and incorporate the content descriptions of all three curriculum strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. A key feature throughout the series is the consistent design and layout. Part 1 explains the approach and outlines the theory and practice of curriculum design while Part 2 outlines the units of work explicitly linked to the Australian Curriculum for each year level. Part 3 provides do-it-yourself curriculum design solutions followed by curriculum design templates which are also available on the associated website. The book uses the Understanding by Design approach with the three stages of curriculum design: identifying the desired results, determining the acceptable evidence of learning and planning learning experiences and instruction accordingly. The units of work for each year level have been designed using the 5Es model for inquiry-based teaching: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate.

Children’s Learning and Development
Reforming Homework
Contemporary Assessment in the Early Years
Practices, Learning and Policy
CLAIRE MCLACHLAN is Professor of Childhood Education at Massey University, New Zealand.
MIKE HORSLEY is an Associate Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Central Queensland University.
SUSAN EDWARDS is Associate Professor of Curriculum and Pedagogy at Australian Catholic University.
RICHARD WALKER is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Postgraduate Coursework and Professional Education at the University of Sydney.
VALERIE MARGRAIN is a Senior Lecturer and National Coordinator for Master of Teaching (Early Years) & Master of Early Childhood Education at Australian Catholic University. KAREN MCLEAN is a Lecturer in Education at Australian Catholic University. Children’s Learning and Development: Contemporary assessment in the early years is an introduction to early childhood learning and the what, why and how of assessment for diverse learners. Assessment has become a key part of the developments for the Early Years Learning Framework in Australia and Te Whariki in New Zealand. Children’s Learning and Development explores assessment through historical theories, philosophies and beliefs, social and cultural contexts, individual differences, and provides information on current assessment tools. These tools include national standardised testing, school entry assessments and international benchmark testing such as PIRLS and PISA. It also discusses how early years assessment is approached and understood within Australian and New Zealand frameworks and how we compare to international curriculum documents from countries such as the US, the UK, Sweden and Singapore.
While homework has been a controversial issue for over 100 years, the debate has been reignited by new research undertaken by educators with renewed focus on a number of issues. While many educators and teachers consider homework to be important, many have concerns about its value, the way it intrudes on class teaching time as well as the inequities that homework may create. Reforming Homework discusses these issues and suggests that there are two main problems with homework as it is currently planned and organised. First, much homework is a repetitive practice and does not contribute to new learning. Secondly, much homework is too complex and difficult for students to complete by themselves. Such complex tasks come at a considerable cost to family life, parental time and equity. This text proposes that a sociocultural conception of homework is required in order to address such concerns. It provides alternative ways of approaching and organising homework as a cultural practice within varying school and cultural contexts.
With the aid of teacher reflections, case studies and pedagogical features such as reflection points, key terms and useful resources, Children’s Learning and Development is a must have resource for all early childhood education students and practitioners.
In addition to its strong theoretical underpinning, this text provides frameworks for guiding homework practices and identifies possible solutions to the issues which have been contested for over a century. Containing vignettes, case studies and checklists for best practice, Reforming Homework is the most comprehensive synthesis of research on homework and student achievement to date.

Motor Learning and Skill Acquisition
Transforming the Curriculum through the Arts
Applications for Physical Education and Sport
Formerly an art/craft specialist in primary schools, ROBYN GIBSON has lectured in the Creative Arts in both the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and the Master of Teaching (Primary) programs at the University of Sydney for the past fifteen years.
MICHAEL SPITTLE is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at Deakin University. Motor learning is the study of how we learn (or acquire) motor skills. Understanding motor learning is important for individuals involved in instructing or teaching movement skills, such as physical education teachers, primary education teachers, coaches and exercise scientists. Motor Learning and Skill Acquisition is organised to initially provide a general understanding of what motor learning is and some important variables related to understanding learning in sport and physical education. Once the reader understands what learning is and some factors that can influence learning, the topic of motor control is introduced. Understanding how we control movement is important as a basis for understanding how to develop approaches for teaching and coaching. If an instructor understands how someone produces a movement, they will be much better equipped to be able to help a learner to actually do it. The book then goes further and explores how to create an effective learning environment to assist in learning and performing movement skills in physical education, exercise and sport science.

Initially a primary teacher, ROBYN EWING is Professor of Teacher Education and the Arts and Associate Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. Robyn lectures in Curriculum, English and Drama across pre-service and postgraduate teacher education programs and has a commitment to innovative teaching and learning at all levels of education. Transforming the Curriculum through the Arts offers something to every teacher who is concerned about the lack of creativity and imagination in today’s curriculum. There is much evidence to suggest that the Arts can make a unique contribution to the lives of young people, their learning and their ability to be creative and imaginative thinkers. Transforming the Curriculum through the Arts supports this idea by presenting the Arts as being central to children’s development and as such provides a much-needed framework for arts-enriched learning and teaching strategies across the primary and middle years curriculum. Based on current national and international research, this book presents a well-grounded rationale for embedding the Arts into the curriculum. Key learning areas are addressed in meaningful, relevant, interesting and creative ways. Innovative exemplars, many written and implemented by practising teachers, are clearly demonstrated.
Being an instructor in physical education, exercise and sport science is an art, and the topics covered in the textbook will provide students with a research and theoretical basis on which to make decisions about how to set up learning environments to help learners achieve their best. $99.95 Pb, NZ$129.95 ISBN 9781420256758 August 2013, 528 pages

Skills for Your First Year at University
HELEN BASIDES is an Academic for the faculty of Humanities and Communication Arts at the University of Western Sydney. The Keys to Academic English is, as its title suggests, an essential resource for anyone undertaking study that requires an understanding and appreciation of academic English. It is the product of 3 years of development and successful implementation at the authors’ university. The book starts with an introduction to the history of English and the forms of language and then goes on to guide the reader on how to plan and produce a successful essay. The book consists of two texts; a student text and a tutor support ‘manual’ with subject resources, exercises, subject frame and assessment-rubric templates. The text is not subject-specific and as such it can be used across a broad range of teaching disciplines and has no single philosophical tradition or frame.
DR MARTINA MÜLLER has been working with first year university students for over six years. Her extensive experience working with commencing students is informed by her own experience of being a student and ranges from tutoring, lecturing and coordinating a large foundation unit to assisting students with the transition in their first year of study. It will also give you tips on studying, note-taking, assessments and sitting exams. Each topic is easily located from the table of contents and is addressed clearly and concisely. Written in uncomplicated language, the book is full of practical information and helpful tips that will equip you with the foundation skills to help you not only survive but also thrive in your first year at university and beyond.

This third edition includes a new opening chapter covering some basic concepts of traditional grammar for those who have either forgotten what they learned in the past or who have never had the opportunity to gain the elementary knowledge of such things as word classes and basic sentence or clause structures. From there, this new edition, as with its predecessors, introduces the general notion of language in context and text types, before progressing to a stepby-step exploration of the three metafunctions of language: experience, interpersonal exchange and textual organisation. The two final chapters, new to this edition, concentrate on practical applications of functional grammar theory for language education, analysis of multimodality in texts, literature, and professional contexts such as psychotherapy. $74.95 Pb, NZ$99.95 ISBN 9781420256789 September 2012, 416 pages

Academic Culture A Student’s Guide to Studying at University, Second Edition JEAN BRICK has been involved in the field of academic literacy for over 20 years. She has worked with undergraduate and postgraduate students from both English speaking and non-English speaking backgrounds, and currently teaches in the Linguistics Department at Macquarie University. Just as we can talk about different cultures around the world, we can also talk about the culture of universities. This is usually called ‘academic culture’ and refers to the attitudes, values and ways of behaving that are shared by people who work or study in universities. Academic Culture is a much-needed and immensely practical book which identifies these attitudes and values as well as the effect they have on student and lecturer behaviour. Designed for all students who are entering university for the first time, the new edition of this widely successful text will equip readers with a breadth of knowledge which will ensure the improvement of their academic performance.

Introduction to South Pacific Law
Australian Journalism Today
Third Edition
MATTHEW RICKETSON is an academic and journalist. He has worked on staff at The Age, The Australian and Time Australia magazine, among others and has won awards for his work. In 2009, he was appointed inaugural Professor of Journalism at the University of Canberra, where he also headed the discipline of Journalism and Communications until his appointment by the federal government in September 2011 to assist former Federal Court judge, Ray Finkelstein QC, in an independent inquiry into the media in Australia. Matthew returned to the university after the inquiry reports in February 2012.
JENNIFER CORRIN is Director of the Centre for Public, International and Comparative Law and Associate Professor in the TC Beirne School of Law at the University of Queensland, Australia. DON PATERSON is Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of the South Pacific with a Doctorate of Law from Yale Law School. The only book of its kind, Introduction to South Pacific Law provides an overview of the origins and development of law in the South Pacific. It sets out the framework of South Pacific legal systems, and also looks at substantive areas of law. Examining both state and customary laws, the book highlights common patterns and points out some of the principal differences between the laws of the countries of the region. Individual chapters are devoted to South Pacific legal systems and jurisprudence, customary law, constitutional law, administrative law, criminal law, family law, contract law, torts law and land law. The courts systems are also covered, with extensive reference to legislative provisions of individual jurisdictions and cases decided by regional courts.
The rise of new communication technologies has cracked open long-held assumptions that the media and journalism are closely related. They are related but they are not synonyms. The revenue from classified advertising that enabled media companies to pay for journalism can now be generated online by companies that have nothing to do with journalism. The ramifications of these new technologies, both for the business of media and for the practice of journalism, are still unfolding but it is already clear they are of critical importance. If the business model that sustained journalism for many years is under threat, these same communication technologies offer journalists new ways of gathering news and presenting stories as well as new ways of engaging with ‘the people formerly known as the audience’. In Australian Journalism Today, experts in the practice and theory of journalism examine key questions facing current and aspiring practitioners.
Taking into account significant changes in the law, this new edition of Introduction to South Pacific Law is a useful and up-to-date resource for all those interested in the law of the region.
What is the future of investigative journalism? How can journalists cover traumatic events without traumatising themselves or others? How can journalists navigate privacy in the online world? Why do some journalists end up training people to avoid other journalists’ questions? Can satire ever be considered journalism? Are we seeing the emergence of viable business models for the media of the 21st century? And are journalists and citizens competing or complementary players in the new media landscape, and what can they learn from each other?

DAVID STANLEY has published, researched and taught on issues related to clinical leadership since 2001. He has also spoken about clinical leadership at conferences in the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia. David currently works as an Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Western Australia. Leadership is critical to nursing and is displayed across a wide range of settings including the practice environment, management, education and research. As such, Clinical Leadership: Innovation into Action is directed towards ‘ground level’ clinical staff, many of whom are, although they may not see it, clinical leaders in health care organisations. The book offers practical, research-based guidance and examples that will inspire, motivate, support and facilitate clinical leaders (or aspiring clinical leaders) in the application of clinical leadership skills. Written for health professionals who act principally in direct client/patient care, it describes the difference between leadership and management. It sets out a new theory of leadership: congruent leadership, primarily focused on how nurses and other health professionals lead at the bedside. Containing case studies and activities, Clinical Leadership supports nursing students, nurse practitioners and health professionals as they strive to develop clinical leadership skills, and as such clinical excellence. The book aims not only to develop, but also support strong nursing leaders, equipping them with the skills needed to foster future nurses for generations to come. $64.95 Pb, NZ$79.95 ISBN 9781420256635 June 2011, 224 pages

This comprehensive book explores such diverse topics as how we sense the world, consciousness and memory, through to diseases and disorders, the ageing brain and spinal injury repair.
SHIH-NING THEN is a Lecturer for the School of Law at the Queensland University of Technology.
FIONA MCDONALD is a Senior Lecturer for the School of Law at the Queensland University of Technology. Understanding ethics and law in health care is an essential part of nurses’ and midwives’ professional standards. It equips readers with the ability to recognise and address legal and ethical issues that will arise in their professional practice.
Containing the latest medical research, The Brain Book explains in concise, clear language important health issues such as the effects of recreational drugs and medicines on the brain, strokes, tumours and the biological basis of mental illness.
The book uses the four principles of biomedical ethics (autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence and justice) together with the use of both the Nursing and Midwifery Codes of Ethics and Codes of Professional Conduct, issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, as a central means through which to analyse and approach ethical and legal issues.
Hundreds of colour images, including stunning 3-D illustrations created exclusively for this book, reveal the intricate workings of the brain to show incredible details beyond what the eye can usually see.
Ethics, Law and Health Care is scaffolded to assist readers in understanding legal and ethical principles, to integrate them in the context of a particular issue within professional practice, and provide them with a decision-making framework to take action in a professional context by utilising the Codes as well as state and federal law. Aided by pedagogical features such as case studies, review questions, further reading and a glossary of common terms, this book is an essential resource for students, academics and practitioners.

DAVID FANANY teaches in the School of Human Biosciences and Public Health at La Trobe University. His training is in the fields of Biomedical Engineering and Public Health. Health is a primary concern for a growing number of people in today’s society. The level of our awareness of the biological issues which affect our health is at an all-time high. Health, however, is not solely a question of biology; it is strongly influenced by societal forces which shape people’s lives such as education, work, culture, language, politics and macroeconomics. Knowledge of these forces is therefore an essential addition to any understanding of how people experience health, as well as any attempt to improve health outcomes. Health as a Social Experience offers a thorough examination of the social determinants which commonly influence health outcomes, starting with those related to individuals and expanding to the deeper structures of society. The question of choice is also comprehensively discussed. Drawing on recent research, as well as real-world case studies, this text provides introductory students with a gateway into the field of public health, offering an insight into the issues faced by health professionals when working with the general populace.

Myth in the Ancient World
Psychology and Indigenous Australians
DR IAN PLANT is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Ancient History, Division of Humanities at Macquarie University. He studied Classics (including Ancient Greek and Latin) and Ancient History at the University of Canterbury, where he completed his doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr Katherine Adshead and Professor Kevin Lee. He taught at the University of Western Australia before taking up the post at Macquarie. His fields of research are Greek history and historiography, especially the study of Thucydides. He also works on women writers from Ancient Greece and Rome, and more recently on Egyptian religion in Greek and Latin writers. He teaches Ancient Greek, Latin, Mythology, Greek Heroes, Women Writers, Thucydides and Herodotus.
Foundations of Cultural Competence
Myth in the Ancient World provides a complete introduction to this important field of study. It contains a selection of readings from ancient texts and a comprehensive glossary designed for readers meeting the people and places of the ancient world for the first time. The book asks what a myth is and how it differs from other narratives, such as legends and folktales. It also looks at interpretations of meaning in mythology. The focus is on Ancient Greek myth, but Roman reinterpretation of Greek stories and the invention of Roman myth are also discussed. Texts from Egypt, the peoples of Mesopotamia, and the Jewish traditions found in the Bible broaden the context and deepen our understanding of myth. The book examines the relevance of key themes to the cultures in which the myths arose or in which they were adapted and retold. Looking at the reflection of the ancient world through myth helps us to identify important religious, social and political aspects of ancient cultures.

ANCIENT HISTORY
ROB RANZIJN is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology and the leader of the Psychology and Indigenous Australians project team which has been working since 2004 to incorporate cultural competence and Indigenous content into psychology undergraduate education by means of curriculum guidelines developed by the project team, and seminars, workshops and conferences on relations between psychology and Indigenous Australians. KEITH MCCONNOCHIE has qualifications in psychology, education and archaeology and extensive experience in teaching and researching Indigenous issues since 1969. He has published extensively in Indigenous education, Australian race relations, Indigenous Archaeology, pedagogies of cultural competence, and Indigenous curriculum. WENDY NOLAN is the Deputy Director and Senior Lecturer in Indigenous Education at the Centre for Indigenous Studies at Charles Sturt University. She acts as a consultant providing cultural competence training programs to practitioners across Australia. She has received a number of research grants for her work in developing cultural competence as a pedagogical model for incorporating Indigenous content into university degree programs. This book fills an important gap in understanding the psychological impact of colonisation on Indigenous Australians. Using cultural competence as a theoretical framework, it starts with an exploration of the nature of culture and worldviews, which permeates and integrates the book. It provides a convincing explanation of how colonisation has affected Indigenous Australians, the role of psychology in this process, and ways forward to redress Indigenous disadvantage. A key emphasis is on ‘doing our own work’, the essential role of critical reflection in transcultural communication. $57.95 Pb, NZ$72.95 ISBN 9781420256284 October 2009, 272 pages

PHILIP BIRCH is a lecturer in criminology and social research in the School of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. His research interests include aggression and violence, sexual offending and sex work. He has worked with the police, both as a practitioner and as part of his previous academic role, contributing to a Police Studies degree program. Victoria has previously conducted research for the UK’s Association of Chief Police Officers and the New South Wales Police Force, and has had work commissioned and published by the Home Office, the Police Foundation and the Independent Police Complaints Commission in the UK.
LOIS BRYSON is an Emeritus Professor for RMIT University.
GREG MARSTON is a Professor for the School of Public Health and Social Work at the Queensland University of Technology. CATHERINE MCDONALD is an Emeritus Professor for RMIT University. In 1992, Australian sociologist Lois Bryson published what proved to be an important book entitled Welfare and the State: Who benefits? The central feature of this text was an exploration of the actual, as opposed to assumed, nature of the redistribution of resources via the Australian welfare state. Following on from Bryson’s work, The Australian Welfare State: Who benefits now? assesses trends in poverty and inequality in Australia from 1992 to the present and describes and evaluates the institutions that make up the Australian welfare state. Taking Bryson’s initial analysis as the baseline, this title illustrates the major structural and institutional developments in the Australian welfare state, and in the Australian economy and society, over this same period. It analyses political and policy responses to poverty and inequality in Australia and assesses the extent and direction of redistribution in key areas of state activity.
Policing in Practice is an edited collection of writings which present a multidisciplinary consideration of historical and contemporary policing practice. With contributions from an array of academics as well as reflections from practitioners, this text provides a comprehensive body of literature which considers the theoretical underpinnings of the practical issues facing a police officer in the modern day. Divided into two parts, this book considers both the operational and organisational environments and details the processes, as well as challenges, facing police officers in both of these sectors. Policing in Practice addresses the policing profession broadly and has been specifically developed for the new or aspiring police officer.
This text definitively outlines the links between Australians’ conceptions about welfare and the redistributive outcomes of the welfare state, canvassing theoretical explanations about why many Australians develop and maintain misconceptions of the broad distributive mechanisms of the Australian welfare state and hold negative attitudes towards its social welfare element.

JOHN REES is a senior lecturer in International Relations at the University of Notre Dame.
JULIET PIETSCH is a senior lecturer in Political Science at the Australian National University. Part of Palgrave Macmillan’s Assessing the Evidence series, Contemporary Challenges to Australian Security provides an introduction to the key conceptual, theoretical, empirical and policy issues central to critical security study debate. This text provides a practical real-world overview of the various elements that together constitute ‘Australian security’. Through the use of primary source materials this book invites the reader to assess the changing nature of Australian security in the context of the increasingly complex and dynamic nature of Asia– Pacific and global politics.
Culture Wars: Australian and American Politics in 21st Century argues that ‘culture wars’ attitudes and conflicts intrinsic to US politics for many decades are also deeply embedded characteristics of Australian political life in the 21st century. It suggests that during the Howard years (1996–2007) culture war antagonisms were forced to the political surface in Australia, albeit without the volatility and violence that sometimes accompanies disputes over religion, social authority, morality, multiculturalism, race, sexuality, education, immigration, feminism and national identity in the United States. The authors maintain that this tension is not necessarily a negative for Australian politics because it will help further ventilate culture war disputes within Australian society and democratise debates which have been largely the province of educated elites.
While firmly grounded in traditional security concepts, the unique structure of this text encourages students to move from concrete observations and facts to making inferences of their own. Readers are provided with the opportunity to witness debates in their formative stages and critically evaluate the importance of information for authenticity, validity and reliability.
The book seeks to further this democratisation process and engage the culture wars in broader terms than is anywhere else available in the literature. It provides a historical and intellectual framework for understanding the contemporary culture wars, before traversing some of its many battlegrounds, on foreign policy and national identity, ‘the struggle for God’, ‘family values’, immigration, the History Wars and the (Australian) ‘Bogan’ factor, among others. $49.95 Pb, NZ$65.95 ISBN 9781420256178 November 2008, 184 pages

Cross-Cultural Social Work Practice
Our Voices
Local and Global
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Work
LING HOW KEE is an Associate Professor of Social Work and the Director of the Centre of Excellence for Disability Studies at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak in Malaysia.
BINDI BENNETT is a lecturer and Indigenous scholarship holder at the Australian Catholic University.
JENNIFER MARTIN is an Associate Professor of Social Work at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.
STEPHANIE GILBERT works in academia at the University of Newcastle.
ROSALEEN OW is the Head of the Department of Social Work at the National University of Singapore.
DAWN BESSARAB is a researcher in Indigenous health at the Centre for Health Innovation Research Institute, Curtin University.
The world is now a global village, yet cultural diversity is at the forefront of social work practice within and across countries. Professional social workers in different countries increasingly have to relate to a multicultural society, and to develop culturally relevant and appropriate practices with individuals and families, groups and communities. In addition, social workers have to work across different national boundaries or with issues which emanate from forces both within and beyond the countries they are from. Social work education therefore has to be able to prepare graduates to work in varying cultural and socio-economic contexts. Cross-Cultural Social Work: Local and global addresses contemporary issues that are at the forefront of community care and development. Part 1 discusses theories and perspectives for culturally appropriate practice, education and research, whilst Part 2 contains approaches to working with culturally diverse groups and practice areas.
SUE GREEN is an Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of New South Wales.
Current social work practice in Australia is very much based in Western traditions: this can create conflict or misunderstandings when working with groups whose epistemologies and ontologies are different. Our Voices is a ground-breaking collection of writings from Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous social work educators and students. Through a process of hypothesising, reflecting and evaluating, the authors have built and acquired a tool kit of appropriate behaviours, interactions, networks and interventions that work. Sharing this tool kit means sharing the outcome of a methodical, informative and evaluative process.
Combining theoretical discussions and practical knowledge building materials Cross-Cultural Social Work facilitates the development of cultural competence among social work students, educators, practitioners and researchers. The book engages readers to critically reflect on cultural underpinnings of dominant social work theories and methods, and to challenge the way we think about culture and cross-cultural practice.
Through the exploration of a number of contemporary social work practice issues, including cultural supervision, working with communities, understanding trauma, collaboration and relationship building and narrative practice, this text provides valuable insight into how social work practice can be developed, taught and practised. This book will not only help Aboriginal social workers assist their own communities, but it will also provide other social workers with the impetus to engage, apply and recognise the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems and ways of working to more effectively engage communities.

Social Work Practice
Australia’s Changing Landscape
A Conceptual Framework
MARGARET ALSTON is Professor of Social Work and Head of Department at Monash University. Prior to her appointment, she lived and worked in rural areas for over thirty years. She has published widely in this area and is passionate about equity and social justice for people living in rural and remote areas.
USCHI BAY is Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Monash University. Social Work Practice: a conceptual framework promotes a critical reflexivity of challenging taken-for-granted ideas, assumptions and ways of doing things. Much of the current perceived ideas in social work, and our habits of thinking, relate politics only to government and not to a public way of thinking about and debating issues. Political constructs drawn from two major twentieth century political theorists, Michel Foucault and Hannah Arendt, are presented to question the meaning of the political and to enable a critical engagement with social work practice by promoting a range of political skills, such as making judgments, political storytelling, facilitating dialogue between people, and ‘acting in concert’ towards agreed shared goals.
Australia’s folklore and heritage are imbued with iconic images of rural Australia – the broad plains, wide horizons and stoic, laconic people of the outback. Yet, despite its significance to our national psyche, rural Australia is at a crisis point due largely to global & climate factors, such as climate change, bushfires and drought, resulting in depopulation and a consequent disintegrating social fabric. Innovative Human Services Practice focuses on the impacts on the people and communities most affected and the way human services in the vast areas have responded to date: it seeks to give direction as to how they might respond in the future, promoting more effective health and welfare responses.
This book identifies and highlights the specific political dimensions of central social work skills, focusing on: • how our modern day selves and those of others are constituted through power relations • the politics of knowledge and the effects of dominant discourses on social practices • the effects of current technologies and techniques on social work practices • the processes of political storytelling and forming political judgments • revaluing political action.
The book draws on international scholarship in order to promote models of Human Service delivery supportive of rural and remote Australia. It re-focuses attention on reshaping viable and creative human services and human service practice models that deliver real and positive benefits to people living in rural and remote areas. It is a timely work in the context of vigorous debate on national responses to climate change and people movements.

ELIZABETH OZANNE is Associate Professor in Social Work at the University of Melbourne.
Planning, Designing and Conducting Real-World Research
DAVID ROSE is a lecturer of Social Work at the University of Melbourne.
RALPH HALL is a professor in the School of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of New South Wales. He teaches social research methods, evaluation and philosophy of social science. His current research interests are peer mentoring programs for students and aspects of road safety.
Human service workers often see their primary focus as the core skills of frontline work. However, human service work predominantly takes place from within an organisational environment that strongly influences which services are provided, how they are provided, the overall legitimacy of those services and how they are perceived by service users and the broader community. As such, an understanding of the context of human service organisations and how they influence practice is essential for all practitioners. The Organisational Context of Human Service Practice provides a framework for thinking about and understanding human service practice. It highlights not only how the organisation shapes and influences everyday human service practice but also how human service workers might shape and influence organisations.

Applied Social Research focuses on the real-world context of applied research. It discusses the often overlooked yet essential process of planning: poor planning inevitably produces inadequate research. The text helps researchers decide how to approach their applied research problems and to think through the major issues in the design and analysis of their project.
Containing a number of pedagogical tools such as case studies, learning activities and discussion question, The Organisational Context of Human Service Practice combines historical and contemporary perspectives and serves as an authoritative guide to success within human service organisations.
Applied Social Research also discusses the idea that in applied social research the use of a single method type is unlikely to provide answers to the often complex set of research questions being addressed and highlights the benefits of using two or more research methods in the one study. The author argues that such mixed method designs are becoming widely used in applied social research, particularly where the methods combine qualitative and quantitative data, thereby enabling a richer set of data to provide various perspectives on the research topic, removing limitations imposed by using single methods. Examples of such designs are provided throughout, and useful mixed method designs are outlined and their advantages discussed.

The text has been revamped to cover the new SIR07 package at level III and into IV. Together the two books fully cover the National Retail Competencies for levels II and III. Where appropriate and to avoid duplication, references are made to First Steps in a Retail Career, Third Edition for competency coverage. The chapters have been revised and updated and now include a best practice checklist.
The Fashion Design Manual 2 provides a comprehensive view of the creative process of designing and creating fashion. It shows how a designer works with fabrics, colours and shapes, and combines them with inspiration and new ideas to create garments that suit the mood of the times and allow the wearer to express their individuality. It invites the reader to tread the path of the designer, as their ideas are taken from sketch to sample, through production, onto the catwalk and, via the retailer, to the consumer. Each stage is discussed in detail and has been written with the support and endorsement of many fashion companies, organisations and industry professionals.
The competencies in this text extend to AQF Levels 3 and 4. The knowledge and skills information as well as the activities and assessments in the text have been designed to provide a platform from which to achieve and develop the identified retail competencies. Other available information and documents relevant to this and other chapters within this text are listed in ‘Further Reading and Resource Materials’ at the end of each chapter.
The text is generously illustrated with drawings, charts and photographs, many of which are new and come direct from industry sources. The challenges posed by the imperative to perform responsibly and sustainably while still embracing a love for fashion are also addressed in this edition. So too are the exciting new technologies, and the careers and opportunities that international trade has created for those wanting to work in an industry where almost anything is possible.
