Hello, Welcome to Issue 3 of Connected, the author newsletter from Palgrave Macmillan.

Connected is sent out twice a year, and aims to update you on new products and achievements from Palgrave Macmillan, as well as providing some useful information and special offers for all our authors, contributors, and journal editorial board members.

In August 1861, a month after publication of The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs & Lyrical Poems in the English Language, Alexander Macmillan, founder of Macmillan wrote to Francis Turner Palgrave declaring “I get golden opinions of our little book”. This was to become the single most successful “national” anthology in English literary history, popularising Wordsworth and the romantic poets and still influencing our poetic taste today.

The 150th anniversary of this collaborative effort also celebrates the long association of the name “Palgrave” with Macmillan, and reflects an unbroken tradition of innovative publishing which continues to seek to adapt to changing markets and ideas.

study of English Literature, poetry and fine arts in education. Whilst teaching at Kneller Hall he became friends with Tennyson, and it was on a walking tour together that the idea for a collection of poetry was born.

Palgrave & Alexander wanted this collection to create a love of poetry. The poems were carefully selected, with help from Tennyson, Thomas Woolner and George Miller, to reflect the best in lyrical poetry.

An Ideal Size and Format Presentation was important. Palgrave wanted to focus attention on the poems. They were to be compressed occupying less space on a page, making them attractive to read, the name of the author to appear at the end of each poem and the notes to appear at the end of the book.

Palgrave’s ground breaking ideas for the design, size and format of the book (“a small octavo of a very pretty shape and size and type”) and its price contributed to its success. His attention to detail created a good quality book that was affordable (4s 6d) and looked appealing. The innovative compact format, bound in green cloth with the distinctive gold Macmillan device, was an attractive book to own and read.

Palgrave does Open Access Palgrave Open is a new initiative from Palgrave Macmillan Journals which allows authors of accepted articles the option to publish their work fully Open Access. Open Access (OA) refers to scholarly content that is freely available online. Launched in June for 18 of our journals, under Palgrave Open, on payment of an article processing charge an article will be made free to view online on publication, for any website visitor, and the author may post a copy of the final PDF on their website or institutional repository.

Open Access publishing is growing in prominence in Science, Technical and Medical (STM) publishing, but fewer such opportunities are currently available in the humanities and social sciences (HSS). This is why Palgrave Macmillan is pleased to launch Palgrave Open as an experiment into the role OA can play in HSS and its viability as a sustainable business model, by making OA an option for a number of our journals.

Spotlight on Success

By Rachel Fenwick Residential Care Transformed – an examination of care homes that updates Peter Townsend’s classic study of 1962 – has won the British Academy’s inaugural Peter Townsend Policy Press Book Prize. The authors, Julia Johnson, Sheena Rolph Randall Collins will receive their prize in a ceremony at the British Academy on 6th October.

The Palgrave Literary Dictionary of Byron edited by Martin Garrett has won the Elma Dangerfield Award, presented by the International Byron Society.
