Iran and the CIA The Fall of Mosaddeq Revisited Darioush Bayandor Challenging a great myth of Middle Eastern history, this gripping account of the fall of Mossadeq questions the notion that shady plotting by the CIA was at the heart of his downfall In the early 1950s, the frail Iranian prime minister shook the world, challenging superpower Britain by nationalizing the British-run oil industries in Iran. His name was Doctor Mohammad Mosaddeq. His subsequent downfall in August 1953 changed the course of Iranian history, and remains a haunting memory for the people of Iran today. For half a century the conventional wisdom attributed these events to foul play by the CIA and a myth of CIA power and success was created that has mesmerized opinion ever since and cast a shadow over Iran’s continuingly troubled relations with the West. This pathbreaking study unearths new documentary evidence to suggest: • The truth lies elsewhere and that Mosaddeq’s fall actually took Washington and London by complete surprise. • Mossadeq’s downfall can be largely attributed to prominent Iranian clerics and political factions and NOT the CIA. Praise for Iran and the CIA: ‘The author has tackled a subject of great importance, infused with emotions and obscured by political manipulation, objectively and with care, using all available sources and to put the events in their proper context. The book deserves a wide audience and should do much to bring this episode into proper perspective.’- Shahram Chubin, Director of Studies, Geneva Centre for Security Policy

Paris Under Water How the City of Light Survived the Great Flood of 1910 Jeffrey H. Jackson
To mark the 100th anniversary of the great flood of Paris comes the gripping history of the triumph of Parisians in the face of a natural disaster In the winter of 1910, the river that brought life to Paris quickly became a force of destruction. Torrential rainfall saturated the soil, and faulty engineering created a perfect storm of conditions that soon drowned the streets, homes, businesses, and museums. The city seemed to have lost its battle with the elements. Given the Parisians’ history of deep-seated social, religious, and political strife, it was questionable whether they could collaborate to confront the crisis. Yet while the sewers, Métro, and electricity failed around them, Parisians of all backgrounds rallied to save the city and one another. Improvising techniques to keep Paris functioning and braving the dangers of collapsing infrastructure and looters, leaders and residents alike answered the call to action. This newfound ability to work together proved a crucial rehearsal for an even graver crisis four years later, when France was plunged into World War I. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the flood, Jeffrey H. Jackson captures here for the first time the drama and the ultimate victory of man over nature. Jeffrey H. Jackson is a professor of history at Rhodes College in Memphis, and has worked in the Parisian archives for ten years. He was recently honored as one of the top young historians in the United States and was a consultant for the documentary Harlem in Montmartre: A Paris Jazz Story on PBS. He lives in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Holocaust Is Over, We Must Rise from Its Ashes Avraham Burg
‘...A compelling mix of polemic, personal memoir, homage to his parents and meditation on Judaism.’ - Donald Macintyre, The Independent
New in Paperback Marketing • National print & broadcast publicity
Modern-day Israel and the Jewish community are strongly influenced by the memory and horrors of Hitler and the Holocaust. Here, Burg argues that the Jewish nation has been traumatised and has lost the ability to trust itself, its neighbours, or the world around it. He shows that this is one of the causes for the growing nationalism and violence that are plaguing Israeli society and reverberating through Jewish communities worldwide. Burg uses his own family history to inform his innovative views on what the Jewish people need to do to move on and eventually live in peace with their Arab neighbours and feel comfortable in the world at large. Thought-provoking, compelling, and original, this book continues to inspire heated debate around the world.

Anton Chekhov A Brother’s Memoir Mikhail Chekhov Translated by Eugene Alper On the 150th anniversary of his birth, the illuminating biography of one of Russia’s most influential writers and dramatists, by his younger brother In a style reminiscent of Anton Chekhov himself-realistic, intimate, and dynamic-Mikhail Chekhov shares unparalleled memories and insights, transporting readers into the world of the Chekhov family. He visits the places where his brother lived and worked and introduces the people he knew and loved, Leo Tolstoy and Piotr Tchaikovsky among them. As a unique eyewitness to the beloved writer’s formative years and his artistic maturity, Mikhail Chekhov shows first-hand the events that inspired the plots for The Seagull, The Black Monk, and The Steppe, among other enduring works. Captivating, surprising, and a joy to read, this memoir reveals the remarkable life of one the most masterful storytellers of our time. Extract taken from Anton Chekhov: ‘A revised version of Anton’s play Ivanov, which I mentioned before, opened in St. Petersburg. The original version had premiered in the Korsh Theater in Moscow on November 19, 1887. Anton had written it completely by chance… I was present that first night and remember what took place in Korsh’s theater. It was incredible. The audience was jumping out of their seats and applauding. Some people were trying to quiet the crowd, some were whistling, and others were stomping their feet. The chairs and armchairs on the orchestra floor got moved around during the commotion, so mixing-up the rows and aisles that it was impossible to find one’s seat. Those audience members in the boxes were quite alarmed and weren’t sure whether to stay or go. A fight sprung up in the gallery between those shushing and those applauding.’ Mikhail Chekhov (1865-1936) was a writer and novelist in his own right, as well as Anton’s assistant and secretary. His role as his brother’s biographer began in 1905 when he was asked to share his recollections in a Moscow magazine. Mikhail died in Yalta in 1936 at the age of 71. Eugene Alper has been a translator for over twenty years, and his work includes five major plays by Anton Chekhov (with Professor Carl Mueller), a memoir about Anton Chekhov (by Isaak Altshuller), and movie scripts and interviews for Paramount and Universal.

The Elephant In the Boardroom The Causes of Leadership Derailment Adrian Furnham
Breaking through the multiple publications on leadership, this indispensable book identifies how potentially great leaders become bad leaders and the devastating consequences their actions can have upon organisational performance
Marketing
The cost of management failure in any organisation is high, it is estimated to be between one and two million pounds per ‘senior manager’. And yet there are very few leadership books published that examine why managers fail in the first place and the direct impact their poor performance has on the organisation as a whole. This book from the acclaimed management writer Adrian Furnham, explores the dark side of leadership and how and why leaders can have a negative impact upon their companies and organisations. It asks why too often people do not speak out but instead ignore the problems they are causing.

Global Warring How Environmental, Economic, and Political Crises Will Redraw the World Map Cleo Paskal A highly controversial and compelling look at the geopolitical impact of global environmental change How aggressive will water-hungry China become in order to secure a sufficient supply of it? What will happen when climatetriggered conflicts like the one in Sudan spread throughout the continent? As India takes its proper place at the high table of nations and begins the large-scale importing of food, what will happen to already dwindling global storehouses? Combining cutting-edge climate research and interviews with geopolitical strategists and military planners, Cleo Paskal identifies problem areas that are most likely to start wars, destroy economies, and create failed states. She examines the most likely environmental change scenarios and extrapolates ways in which they could radically alter human existence. Global Warring is a fascinating tour through our uncertain future and is essential to understanding tomorrow‘s world. ‘Cleo Paskal is original and compelling; a pioneering scholar of the new terrain where climate change confronts national security, she charts the dramatic implications not just for the game of nations but for their geographic borders, their resources and their fundamental interests.’- Martin Walker, senior director of the Global Business Policy Council and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of United Press International.

Based on never-before-seen family archives and published to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Winston Churchill’s election to Prime Minister, this is the true biography of one of Britain’s greatest dynasties. Winston Churchill is possibly the most famous British leader, but a shroud of mystery still surrounds the Churchill clan. Myths propagated by Winston‘s political enemies, as well as by the family members themselves, persist to this day. Here, for the first time, authors Celia and John Lee cut through the rumours and lies and get to the truth about the life of the former prime minister and his relationship with his family. Through their unique access to the private papers of the Churchill family, the Lees have made some surprising new discoveries, including: • Winston’s bestselling autobiography My Early Life is a carefully crafted myth that has coloured every subsequent book about him
• Winston was not an illegitimate child, as many have claimed; but was premature at birth • Winston was sustained through life by a loving and resilient brother, who had a promising career in the military before having to give it up for the sake of his family‘s financial security. ‘The Lees have done Churchillian history a great service with their diligence, throwing light on a part of the story that has not hitherto been fully understood.’ -The Telegraph (UK) ‘A fascinating new book by Celia and John Lee, who were granted unique access to the private papers of Winston’s nephew, Peregrine Churchill, is set to challenge common misunderstandings about the family dynamic.’ - Andrew Roberts, author of Masters and Commanders and The Storm of War ‘By their careful re-reading of the known letters between the principal characters, and the blending in of new material from Peregrine Churchill’s archive, Celia and John Lee add enormously to our understanding of the great Churchill family.’ - Allen Packwood, Director, Churchill Archives Centre, University of Cambridge ‘This book brings Winston’s brother Jack into the picture as no previous work and is a valuable contribution to our knowledge.’ - Richard M. Langworth CBE, Editor, Finest Hour, The Churchill Centre ‘Well-written, engaging, and affecting. Not all siblings love each other and it speaks well of Jack and Winston that they did all their lives.’ - Michael McMenamin, author of Becoming Winston Churchill

A Little War That Shook the World Georgia, Russia, and the Future of the West Ronald Asmus A fascinating look at the shocking behindthe-scenes events leading up to the RussiaGeorgia War and its impact on volatile relations with the West The brief war between Russia and Georgia in August 2008 seemed to many like an unexpected shot out of the blue that was gone as quickly as it came. Former Assistant Deputy Secretary of State Ronald Asmus contends that it was a conflict that was prepared and planned for some time by Moscow, part of a broader strategy to send a message to the United States: Russia is going to flex its muscle in the twentyfirst century. A Little War that Shook the World is a fascinating look at the breakdown of relations between Russia and the West, the decay and decline of the Western Alliance itself, and the fate of Eastern Europe in a time of economic crisis. While the medical establishment treats autism as a psychiatric condition and prescribes behaviourally based therapies, Dr. Julie Buckley argues that it is a physiological disease that must be medically treated. Part personal story of her battle to heal her autistic daughter, part guide for parents, it explains simply and accessibly the new treatments and diets that have already proven effective for many families. Told through the case studies of her patients, the book is divided into four typical visits to Dr. Buckley’s pediatric practice so that parents can see the progression of initial treatment. Money Makers Inside the New World of Finance and Business David Snider and Chris Howard An accessible guide for those looking to make sense of the financial world in a changed economy In the wake of global financial crisis, the people, firms and businesses driving our modern economy have changed. The Godfather Jon Lewis
Voted Number One in the Top 500 films of all Marketing time by Empire Magazine (2008), this exciting • Print advertising in Little White Lies, Sight & Sound & Empire new BFI Film Classic offers a fresh look at magazines The Godfather, and how its success changed • National print publicity American filmmaking and Hollywood forever
‘It’s a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.’ Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972) marked a transition in American filmmaking, and its achievement - as a work of art, as a creative ‘property’ exploited by its studio, Paramount Pictures, as a model for aspiring auteurist filmmakers - changed Hollywood forever. Jon Lewis’ study of the film looks at the significance of The Godfather in Hollywood’s dramatic box-office turnaround in the 1970s and offers a critical and historical discussion of The Godfather’s place within the crime and gangster film genre. Lewis focuses on the film as a commercial as well as an artistic landmark of American auteurist cinema, as a singularly important film in Hollywood studio history and as a brilliant reworked modern genre picture that at once adopts and adapts the gangster film. Jon Lewis is Professor in the Department of English at Oregon State University, USA. He is the author of a number of books, including American Film: A History (W.W. Norton, 2008), Hollywood v. Hard-Core: How the Struggle Over Censorship Created the Modern Film Industry (NYU Press, 2000) and Whom God Wishes to Destroy ... Francis Coppola and the New Hollywood (Duke University and Athlone Press, 1995).

Voted in the Top 20 films of all time in Empire Marketing Magazine’s poll (2006), this absorbing new BFI • Print advertising in Little White Lies, Sight & Sound and SFX Film Classic offers a historical and cinematic magazines look at the impact of Back to the Future on • National print publicity the ‘New New Hollywood’ of the 1980s Back to the Future was the top-grossing film of 1985 and the eighthhighest-grossing film of the 1980s. It was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Original Screenplay in 1986, and won the 1986 People’s Choice Award for Favourite Motion Picture. Co-written and directed by Spielberg protégé Robert Zemeckis, it became a landmark of ‘New New Hollywood’, and has continued to grow in popularity, year after year. Andrew Shail and Robin Stoate’s study of the film places it in the historical context of Reaganite America and the cinematic context of the ‘New New Hollywood’ and of Zemeckis’s film-making career. They discuss the film’s treatment of time travel and its depiction of the potential and pitfalls of science and of atomic energy. Shail and Stoate consider Back to the Future’s attitudes towards teen culture of the 1980s and the 1950s, seen in the film as a period in which traditional ‘American’ values and gender roles held sway to the benefit of family and community life, in contrast to the more troubled decade from which Marty McFly begins his time-travelling adventures.

Baz Luhrmann Pam Cook
The first major book on the visionary and controversial film-maker Baz Luhrmann, based on his own private archives Luhrmann’s reputation as an innovator rests on the evidence of the three films known as the Red Curtain Trilogy: Strictly Ballroom (1992), William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge! (2001), which together demonstrate the development of a highly distinctive style and brand. Pam Cook, who was given unprecedented access to the Luhrmann private archives, explores the genesis of the Red Curtain aesthetic, from Luhrmann’s early experience in theatre and opera to his collaborative working methods and unique production set-up. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Luhrmann and his chief collaborator, designer Catherine Martin, she traces the roots of their work in an increasingly globalised Australian film culture, investigating the relationship of their company Bazmark to the Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox, and the European influences on their style and production methods. At the book’s heart are substantial analyses of the spectacular Red Curtain films and the historical epic Australia (2008). This lively and original study of one of contemporary cinema’s most fascinating figures will appeal to film scholars, cultural historians and Luhrmann enthusiasts alike. Pam Cook is Professor Emerita in Film at the University of Southampton. She is the editor of ‘The Cinema Book’, 3rd Edition, BFI 2007, and of ‘Gainsborough Pictures’, Cassell/Continuum 1997, and the author of Fashioning the Nation: Costume and Identity in British Cinema, BFI 1996, I Know Where I’m Going! in the BFI Film Classics series, 2002, and of Screening the Past: Memory and Nostalgia in Cinema, Routledge, 2005.

Why are we in such a financial mess today? How did the world’s leading economists fail to see what was coming? What can we learn from their misinterpretations? eConned will take you on a terrifying investigation of the financial realm over the last 25 years of misrepresentations, naive interpretations of economic conditions, rationalizations of bad outcomes, and rejection of clear signs of growing instability. From the creator of the influential blog, Naked Capitalism… The author, Yves Smith, is known as one of the most influential commentators on the financial crisis through her blog, Naked Capitalism, which receives over 250,000 visitors per month and 1.5 million page views …Known as an expert on global economics… Her work is regularly featured in commentary by the New York Times’s Paul Krugman, highly respected economics professors such as Brad DeLong, Tyler Cowen and Mark Thomas, Slate, the Boston Globe Ideas section and the Wall Street Journal’s, Fortune’s, the Financial Times’, the Economist’s and CNN’s blogs …eConned sheds a different light on the economics crisis… eConned looks at the role of economists in the global economic crisis, an area which is becoming more and more under the spotlight, in the news and discussed in the general public sphere
In eConned, author Yves Smith reveals: • why the measures taken by the Obama Administration are mere palliatives and are unlikely to pave the way for a solid recovery • how economists have come to play a profoundly antidemocratic role in policy • how financial models and concepts that were discredited more than thirty years ago are still widely used by banks, regulators, and investors • how management and employees of major financial firms looted them, enriching themselves and leaving the mess to taxpayers • how financial regulation enabled predatory behaviour by Wall Street towards investors • how economics has no theory of financial systems, yet economists fearlessly prescribe how to manage them Praise for Yves Smith and Naked Capitalism: ‘One of the most respected financial bloggers, Smith routinely rips into dodgy economic assumptions and her worldly analysis makes for indispensable reading.’ - Proinsias O’Mahony, Irishtimes.com

The Meaning of Friendship Dr Mark Vernon
A brilliantly lucid and insightful guide to all forms of friendship, drawing on philosophy and popular culture to ask the important questions about what friendship is all about Praise for The Philosophy of Friendship: ‘Mark Vernon reminds us that true friendship is hard but worth fighting for. His research is thorough, his mind compassionate and his subject urgent.’ - Sophie Howarth, Director, The School of Life ‘A history of the idea of friendship through the works of various thinkers from Plato to Nietzsche. It’s genuinely useful, lucid, informative and wise.’ - The Independent, Books of the Year 2005 ‘A wonderfully thoughtful and timely reflection on the importance of friendship in helping us become honest, courageous and wise.’ - Stuart Jeffries, The Guardian
MARK VERNON is a writer, broadcaster, blogger and journalist. He was a priest in the Church of England 1994-1996 and holds a PhD in Philosophy from Warwick University, UK. ‘A very readable mix of self-help and technical philosophy, this inquiry explores the potentially detrimental effects of dissimulation, sexuality and the workplace on friendship, as well as looking more generally at the political and ethical issues. Ultimately, Vernon argues that in its purest form friendship is a way of life. Indeed, like Socrates, he believes philosophy and friendship have much in common: they are both founded upon the love that seeks to know’. - PD Smith, The Guardian
A tremendous burden is being placed on friends. Individuals want friends more than family. Couples want to marry a friend. And at the social level, politicians, sociologists, even bishops realise that in the anonymity of the networked age, friendship is increasingly important to care, commitment and belonging. In this new, accessible philosophy of friendship, Mark Vernon examines the love called friendship upon which so much happiness depends. He links the resources of the philosophical tradition with numerous illustrations from modern culture to ask about friendship and sex, work, politics and spirituality. Unusually, he argues that Plato and Nietzsche, as much as Aristotle and Aelred, should be put centre stage. Their penetrating and occasionally tough insights are invaluable if friendship is to be a full, not merely sentimental, way of life for today. This new version of the bestselling The Philosophy of Friendship brings a very topical flavour to the book by exploring the increase in social networking sites and how friendship may or may not be changing for better or worse because of the internet. • Named in the Top Ten books of the year by the Independent on Sunday, 2005 • Explores the increasing use of the internet and social networking as a tool and its impact on friendship today • Friendship is a universal topic and the book is aimed at anyone seeking to know how insights can be applied to their own lives

In Your Face The New Science of Human Attraction David Perrett One of the world’s foremost experts in face perception tells the amazing story of where the human face came from, and how our perceptions affect the way we judge an individual’s personality, health, trustworthiness, and suitability as a friend or lover Revealing some truly eye-opening new findings that will change the way you see your own face and those of everyone around you, the authors explore provocative questions and sometimes unsettling facts: • How much does facial symmetry really matter? • Why do masculine-looking babies commonly grow up to behave like ‘masculine’ adults? • Why do so many people at age 50 really have the face they deserve? • How likely is it that you have friends that you consider ugly? Far from offering a license to be lookist, Perrett offers proof that inner beauty is often what really matters in the mating game and in wider life. And studies prove it makes you better looking, too. DAVID PERRETT is Professor of Psychology at the University of St Andrews. He received the ‘Golden Brain’ award for his discoveries about the way the brain processes faces. He pioneered the use of computer graphics to study the perception of facial attributes such as beauty, health and personality. He is the editor of Processing the Facial Image and Brain Mechanisms for Perception and Memory: From Neuron to Behaviour.

With a multiple award-winning line-up, including Sir Ian McKellen on playing himself in Ricky Gervais’s Extras, this is the first book to explore and interview actors on how they play real people Featuring interviews with: Roger Allam - Eileen Atkins - Simon Callow - Chipo Chung - Oliver Ford Davies - Diane Fletcher - Henry Goodman - Jeremy Irons - Matthew Marsh - Ian McKellen - David Morrissey - Joseph Mydell - Michael Pennington - Siân Phillips - Elena Roger - Timothy West Praise for Playing for Real: ‘This book of interviews brilliantly explores what it means for an actor to be playing Freud or Gordon Brown, Lawrence of Arabia or Charles Dickens. The actors’ answers are as various as the people being portrayed but the intriguing problem these interviews investigate is, for the first time, excitingly put centre-stage.’ - Peter Holland, McMeel Family Professor in Shakespeare Studies, University of Notre Dame Extract taken from the Introduction of Playing For Real: ‘An actor’s celebrity status can also have an effect on his or her approach to playing a real person, and the degree to which they might find disguise appealing. Irons acknowledged that audiences probably came more to see him perform Macmillan than for the playwright’s representation of Macmillan. Irons debated with himself whether to reproduce Macmillan’s famously rotten teeth but ironised his own celebrity with the observation that: ‘One thing I discovered was that Jeremy Irons doesn’t do bad teeth!’ Irons, then, makes it clear that he did not want to lose the image of Irons on stage and set limits to the process of transformation.’

No Rain in the Amazon How South America’s Climate Change Affects the Entire Planet Nikolas Kozloff
Written by a South America expert, this gripping, startling read shows the true danger of the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest and what this means for the entire planet
© Joyce Kozloff
South of the equator lies the key to the planet’s health - the Amazon rainforest. Experts estimate that the Amazon produces a shocking twenty percent of the planet’s oxygen, but global warming is already causing widespread destruction. While the glaciers slowly melt in the Arctic, scientists predict those in the Andes will entirely melt by 2015. The El Niño weather patterns and hurricanes that played havoc with the southeast of the United States for the last several years have tormented both coasts of South America for several decades. Recognized South America expert, Nikolas Kozloff guides the reader through the politics and science of a continent in peril, showing how its problems are a microcosm of the environmental ravages occuring the world over. Drawing on his unique access to South American leaders, Kozloff argues that cooperation between the world’s countries is vital in turning back the tide of climate change, and that the fate of the planet depends on our response to environmental problems of the southern hemisphere.

When Money was in Fashion Henry Goldman, Goldman Sachs, and the Founding of Wall Street June Fisher The gripping story of the founding of the world’s most successful investment bank, Goldman Sachs, told by Henry Goldman’s granddaughter
Marketing
This epic biography tells the story of the rise of Wall Street and the growth of Goldman Sachs from a small commercial paper company to the international banking business we know today. At its heart is the story of Henry Goldman, a man who spoke out passionately for his beliefs, understood the importance of the bottom line, and was known to chuckle, draw on his cigar, and remind his young proteges, “Just keep in mind...Money is always in fashion.”
• National print publicity
Though you will rarely find a mention of him in the official history of Goldman Sachs, it was Henry who established many of the practices of modern investment banking.
• Online marketing campaign
The book traces Henry Goldman’s hard-fought and often frustrating career with Goldman Sachs, a company founded by his father Marcus and passed on to Henry’s brother-in-law Samuel Sachs. The tensions between the Goldmans and the Sachs families extended outside of the boardroom and into the larger world as the United States went to war. Henry’s steadfast support for Germany during World War I would tarnish his reputation and drive him from the firm. But his involvement with finance would continue throughout his life, as would close friendships with luminaries like Albert Einstein, whom he would later join in outspoken denunciation of Hitler’s atrocities against European Jews. Told through the eyes of Henry Goldman’s granddaughter for the first time, this is a story that has shaped contemporary finance and continues to resonate with us today.

The House Advantage Playing the Odds to win Big Business Jeffrey Ma Foreword by Ben Mezrich author of the worldwide bestseller, Bringing Down the House From the genius card counter who inspired the hit film 21 and the worldwide bestseller, Bringing down the House, this intriguing book reveals the mathematical secrets behind Jeff Ma’s success and how to use his techniques to hit the jackpot in business
Marketing
As part of the notorious MIT Blackjack Team depicted in 21 and Bringing Down the House, Jeff Ma used maths and statistics to master the game of blackjack and reap handsome rewards at casinos. Just years later, Ma has inspired not only a blockbuster movie and bestselling book, but equally has successfully started up three different companies and launched a lucrative corporate speaking career. Using his own unique mathematical insights into the puzzling world of statistics, The House Advantage relates these insights to the business world, providing tools and techniques applicable to a wide business audience. He argues that numbers are the key to analyzing nearly everything in the world, from how to spot and profit from global market inefficiencies, to having multiple back up plans in anticipation of every probability. Ma’s stories and business lessons are as intriguing as they are universally applicable.
