In this compelling portrait of one of Africa’s most remarkable success stories, Patricia Crisafulli and Andrea Redmond look at president Paul Kagame’s leadership and the key elements of the so-called Rwanda Model, including self-determination and selfsufficiency, and their potential to challenge the old model of dependence on Western aid in the developing world. Rwanda, Inc. also explore the role of the West in assisting Rwanda with one of its most important goals today: to educate its young people with nine years of compulsory schooling, and then sending the best and brightest to US colleges and universities. With unlimited access to Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his advisors, the authors present a compelling leadership study, focusing on the principles and practices that have resulted in the amazing turnaround of this country. PATRICIA CRISAFULLI is a former business journalist. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, and other national newspapers. But are we really willing to make the sacrifices neccessary to save our economy and our way of life? LARRY ELLIOTT is the economics editor of The Guardian. New Vampire Cinema Ken Gelder The ultimate guide to vampire films from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Twilight and beyond.

New Vampire Cinema examines forty modern classic vampire films from 1992 to the present day, responding to this remarkably long-lasting example of genre cinema. 978-1-844-57440-7 November £16.99 Paperback 224pp 234x153mm World rights; all languages; all standard sub-rights Rights contact: Elisa Risquez

HISTORY
Riot City Protest and Rebellion in the Capital Clive Bloom A provocative history of the 2011 August riots and how London’s revolutionary and riotous history comes to bear on present day outbreaks of violence.
Since 2000, London has seen unprecedented levels of unrest. Its streets have become the battleground for a host of new demands and new ideological standpoints; its occupants, protesters and authority alike, have had to invent new tactics to cope with the pressure of street politics and advances in social media.
978-1-137-02935-5 July £9.99 Paperback 150pp 198x129mm Ebook ISBN: 978-1-137-02937-9 World rights; all languages; all standard sub-rights Rights contact: Elisa Risquez
Riot City deals in detail with the story behind the capital’s unrest from the perspective of protesters, police and government. Using a range of sources, from security briefings to reportage, Clive Bloom provides an analysis of the modern protest movement, placing it in the context of a long history of rebellion. From the student protests to the August riots, Bloom deftly draws parallels between London’s shocking events and reveals, more disturbingly, how many lessons can still be learned from our riotous past. CLIVE BLOOM is Emeritus Professor of English and American Studies at Middlesex University. Widely published and Series Editor of Palgrave Macmillan’s Crime Files series, he is the author of Literature, Politics and Intellectual Crisis in Britain Today (Palgrave Macmillan, 2000) and Cult Fiction (Palgrave Macmillan 1996), amongst many other titles.

Victoria’s Madmen Revolution and Alienation Clive Bloom A unique view of Victoria’s reign through the eyes of the neglected figures of the age – the assassins, anarchists, terrorists and revolutionaries.
Victoria’s Madmen is about those marginal voices, which the nineteenth-century heard only as a distant undifferentiated murmur, but through the Edwardian twilight and beyond became the cacophony of the twentieth century, the unmistakable noise of revolutions shaking both the stability of society and the meaning of self. 978-0-230-31383-5 October £14.99 Paperback 288pp 198x129mm Ebook ISBN: 978-1-137-26243-1 World rights; all languages; all standard sub-rights Rights contact: Elisa Risquez
The book tells the stories of a host of figures who came to exemplify a contrary and contradictory history of the Victorian Age: not one of Dickensian London and smoking factories, but one of little known messiahs like Richard Brothers and Octavia ‘Daughter of God’; writers such as Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Edward Bulwer-Lytton; revolutionaries and radicals like Karl Marx, Beatrice Webb, George Bernard Shaw and Oswald Mosley; madmen like Richard Dadd and Jack the Ripper; orientalists and guerrilla fighters such as T. E. Lawrence; worshippers of Pan such as Arthur Machen, Kenneth Graham and J. M. Barrie, as well as the Latvian anarchists who killed three policeman in the East End of London and the striking schoolchildren of 1911. It is the story of those who were outcasts by temperament and choice; the non-conformists of the Victorian Age. Clive Bloom’s readable account of the dark underbelly of Victoria’s Britain captures the unrest bubbling under the surface of strait-laced Victorian society.

The Famine Plot England’s Role in Ireland’s Greatest Tragedy Tim Pat Coogan The first history of the Great Famine for 15 years from Ireland’s greatest historian who provocatively points the finger of blame at the British government.
978-0-230-10952-0 November £16.99 Hardback 288pp 235x156mm Ebook ISBN: 978-1-137-13867-5 World rights; all languages; all standard sub-rights Rights contact: Kerry Nordling
The Great Famine was caused by the dreaded potato blight that had ravaged Europe throughout the 1840s. Its effects were particularly brutal in Ireland, where one-third of the population was entirely dependent on the potato for food. Ireland lost a million people to death and another million and a half to emigration. The main reason for the human tragedy, according to bestselling author Tim Pat Coogan, was gross mismanagement of the crisis by the British government. Drawing on recently uncovered sources Coogan demonstrates the shocking negligence and lack of humanity exhibited by the British government when dealing with the crisis. Vivid examples include the Sultan of Turkey who offered a donation of £10,000 to the British ambassador, but it was rejected as Queen Victoria was only giving £2,000. It would have been embarrassing for someone outside the realm to give more than the crown and government. For both the native Irish and those in the resulting diaspora, the famine became a rallying point for nationalist movements for decades. This is a fascinating and sobering look at a dark period of global history, as well as the ramifications of the ‘famine mentality’ that continues to haunt Ireland to this day. TIM PAT COOGAN is Ireland’s best known historian and the author of numerous seminal works, including Michael Collins and The IRA, published to wide acclaim. The former editor of The Irish Press, he lives in Dublin, Ireland.

Giap The General Who Defeated America in Vietnam James A. Warren An in-depth exploration of the strategy and tactics of the visionary commander who beat the United States in the Vietnam War.

General Vo Nguyen Giap was the commander-in-chief of the communist armed forces during two of his country’s most difficult conflicts — the first against Vietnam’s colonial masters, the French, and the second against the most powerful nation on earth, the United States. After long and bloody conflicts, he defeated both great Western powers and their Vietnamese allies, forever changing modern warfare. Yet, despite his profound success and the startling implications of his tactics, we know little about how he developed his revolutionary ideas or how he was able to carry them out with such ruthless efficiency. In Giap, military historian James A. Warren brings to life a revolutionary general who deftly defeated world powers against incredible odds. Synthesising ideas and tactics from an extraordinary range of sources, Giap was one of the first to realise that war is not only a series of battles between two armies and that victory can be won through the strength of a society’s social fabric. As war rages on across the world, this is an important and timely look at a man who was a master at defeating his enemies even as they thought they were winning. JOHN A. WARREN is a military historian and freelance writer specializing in modern American military history. He has written books on the Vietnam War and the Cold War and contributed the chapter on the Vietnam War to The Atlas of American Military History. His reviews and articles have appeared in MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History, as well as in Society and The Providence Journal. He lives in New York City.

Song of the Vikings Snorri and the Making of Norse Myths
Nancy Marie Brown A journey into the heart of the ancient North to witness the Vikings, Chieftains, and Epic Sagas, and meet the man who created Norse mythology.
Much like Greek and Roman mythology, the Norse myths are read, re-read and treasured. Famous storytellers such as J.R.R. Tolkien and Neil Gaiman have drawn their inspiration from the long haired, mead drinking, marauding and pillaging Vikings. The author who gave us Nordic mythology is a twelfth century Icelandic chieftain by the name of Snorri Sturluson. 978-0-230-33884-5 November ÂŁ14.99 Hardback 256pp 235x156mm Ebook ISBN: 978-1-137-18311-8 World rights; all languages; all standard sub-rights Rights contact: Kerry Nordling
Like Homer, Snorri was a bard, writing down and embellishing the folklore and pagan legends of medieval Scandinavia. While his stories make great reading for children, the amazing world of medieval Scandinavia has been omitted from narrative history. In Song of the Vikings, award-winning author Nancy Marie Brown brings to life the intrigue and power struggles at the court of medieval ReykjavĂk that Snorri inhabited. Drawing on new and original research, her deep knowledge of Icelandic history, and first hand reading of the original medieval sources, Brown produces a richly textured narrative of a world that continues to fascinate. NANCY MARIE BROWN is the author of highly praised books of non-fiction, including The Abacus and the Cross and The Far Traveler. Her work has also appeared in Loquitor, News from Iceland, The Penn Stater, Spektur and Vermont Magazine. She is fluent in Icelandic and lives in Vermont.

My Life in Politics Jacques Chirac Two-time French president Jacques Chirac is a pivotal figure in the twentieth-century political landscape – here, for the first time in English, he reveals the truth behind his time in politics.
My Life in Politics covers the full scope of Chirac’s political career of more than 50 years and includes many of the twentieth-century’s most significant events. Originally published as two volumes in French, this edition has been updated and condensed focusing on Chirac’s role on the international stage with a brandnew afterword exclusive to Palgrave Macmillan. 978-0-230-34088-6 November £18.99 Hardback 352pp 235x156mm Ebook ISBN:978-1-137-20578-0 World rights; English language; all standard sub-rights Rights contact: Kerry Nordling
Chirac started his political life with France’s defeat in Algeria in the early 1960s, and went on to become the personal negotiator with Saddam Hussein for France’s oil interests in the Persian Gulf. He sold Iraq their first nuclear reactor and incurred the wrath of the US and Israel, which he discusses in striking detail in this memoir. As mayor of Paris, Chirac is famed for his success in beautifying the City of Lights and keeping it together during the 1968 riots. This period of his career has been in the news recently. As President he was instrumental in the formation of the European Union and the privatization of the French economy. In several dramatic chapters, Chirac describes his opposition to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and his tense meetings with President George W. Bush make for exciting reading. My Life in Politics is not only a riveting life story but an important and compelling account of late twentiethcentury international politics from a true insider. JACQUES CHIRAC was President of France from 1995 to 2007. He also served as Prime Minister of France twice in the 1970s and 1980s, and as Mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995. He is best known for being one of the most prominent international opponents of the Bush administration’s intention to go to war in Iraq. He also worked to abate nuclear armament, banning the further continuation of nuclear tests in France.

Israel The Will to Prevail Danny Danon A controversial insight into Israel’s politics from one of the regions most outspoken young polititicans.
As a politician in Israel’s Knesset, Danny Danon has been a vocal opponent of disengaging in the Gaza Strip and West bank, and transforming the stalemate “two state/one state” dialogue to include regional partners, at times standing in direct opposition to his own party’s leadership.

In Israel, Danon shares this vision with the world. It is a bold and uncompromising stance in the face of attacks on Israel’s sovereignty by other Middle Eastern nations as the United States sends mixed signals of support to further its own goals in the region. Danon dissects the missteps and wrong turns that Israel’s politicians have taken in the past by working to appease the United States and not offend its neighbours, instead of prioritizing its own viability. With electrifying zeal, he tackles the challenges Israel faces today to undo what he sees as a consequence brought on by years of acquiescence to US policy. No stranger to controversy, Danon’s unabashed insights are a welcome revelation in the current quagmire of Middle East international relations. DANNY DANON is a rising star in Israeli politics both in his homeland and abroad. He has contributed to publications including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and appeared on networks such as CNN and Fox News to discuss the status of Israel. He lives in Moshav Mishmeret, Israel.

Obama and the Middle East The End of America’s Moment? Fawaz A. Gerges From one of the top Middle East experts in the world comes a candid assessment of current American foreign policy in the Middle East and a proposed plan for the region.
978-1-137-00016-3 June £16.99 Hardback 304pp 216x138mm Ebook ISBN: 978-1-137-00017-0 World rights; all languages; all standard sub-rights Rights contact: Kerry Nordling
During his presidential campaign, Barack Obama promised to distance the United States from the neoconservative foreign policy legacy of his predecessor, George W. Bush, and usher in a new era of a global, interconnected world. The end of President Obama’s term is looming, and the reality of his approach is in stark contrast to the ebullient and optimistic image that he originally built up. In fact, Obama has not committed to redefining US foreign policy in a transformational way, but to calibrating and correcting the Bush policies and reclaiming the neorealist approach that has defined America’s foreign policy since WWII. Taking stock of Obama’s years in the White House, Obama and the Middle East places his engagement in the Middle East within the broader context of US foreign policy since 9/11 and examines key areas that have posed a challenge to his administration: negotiation with Israel and Palestine, troop levels in Iraq and Afghanistan, engagement with the Arab Spring, intervention in Libya, and the death of Osama bin Laden. Gerges analyses Obama’s policies toward the Middle East, reckons with the administration’s history, priorities, and goals, and makes essential strategic recommendations for advancing US-Middle East relations. FAWAZ A. GERGES is Professor of Middle Eastern Politics and International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he is chair of the Middle Eastern Centre. He is frequently on US TV and has contributed to high profile publications including the The New York Times and The Washington Post. He lives in London.

SuperFuel Thorium, the Green Energy Source for the Future
Richard Martin A riveting examination of how an alternative source of energy is revolutionising nuclear power.
In this groundbreaking account of an energy revolution in the making, award-winning science writer Richard Martin introduces us to thorium, a radioactive element and alternative nuclear fuel that is far safer, cleaner, and more abundant than uranium.

At the dawn of the Atomic Age, thorium and uranium were in close competition as the fuel of the future. Uranium, with its ability to produce explosions, won out over its more pacific sister element, relegating thorium to the dustbin of science. Now, as we grapple with the perils of nuclear energy and rogue atomic weapons, thorium is re-emerging as the overlooked energy source. In the first mainstream book to tackle these issues, energy expert Richard Martin makes plain the complexities of the energy crisis and shows how thorium can wean us off our fossil-fuel addiction and avert the risk of nuclear meltdown for ever. RICHARD MARTIN is an energy expert and awardwinning journalist. Martin is a senior research analyst for Pike Research, a leading clean-energy research firm based in Boulder, Colorado.
