DOGHOUSE NOTES

• This introductory assignment was useful in showing

that SketchUp is actually quite intuitive. As a SketchUp beginner, I was happy to use my newly attained skills to express my simple design ideas. 5

DOG HOUSE NOTES ! • In this exercise, we learned some best practices for navigating through the

toolbar and how to use the mouse more efficiently in order to zoom in and out of the drawing as well as panning and orbiting.

• Key tools and techniques used to create the doghouse: rectangle, push/pull,

line, arc, paint bucket, move, erase and inferencing using the colored axis.

• In addition to these essential tools, we also utilized 3D Warehouse to import

a 2D image of the dog. 3D Warehouse is a valuable resource when creating SketchUp designs because it enhances and completes the drawing by giving the user access access to nearly any type of model for importing directly into the drawing.

6

REFLECTION • Although my first drawing of a doghouse is quite literal, and

may lack a bit of design aesthetic, I was able to utilize all of the essential tools given in the lesson within a relatively short amount of time in order to create the drawing. • A few challenges presented during this exercise came in the

form of understanding the point inferences and axis guides. For example, at times it appeared as though the structure was drawn on one plane, but once rotated and viewed from a different angle, I could see the lines clearly started at different points. I learned that the points needed to be “co-planar”.

DOGHOUSE 2 NOTES • Doghouse 2 is an improved version of the original dog house. • Using layers became an essential part of creating the second

doghouse because it helped maintain an organized drawing. • Creating components was another important part of managing the

file. It became a convenient resource in instantly replicating designs. 10

DORIC TEMPLE NOTES • This exercise took a historic approach to SketchUp design by

observing the intricacies of the Greek Doric Order.

REFLECTION •

There were two major topics highlighted throughout this exercise. One topic how use classic “doric" terminology in order to inform our step-by-step approach. The other was to utilize our previously learned skills to draw on a more detailed level.

Drawing the Doric temple using SketchUp proved to be quite the challenging task. As one could gather from the image on this slide, the structure itself is extremely detailed. I personally struggled with a combination of time management and patience to get through the entire drawing.

! REFLECTION This assignment was appealing because it encouraged a deeper understanding of architectural design. I found the need to research the artist, Malevich and the Golden Section, as well as the Fibonacci series in order to create a semi interesting design. In previous assignments there were general guidelines to follow, which resulted in less design variation throughout the class. In this assignment however, it was open to interpretation and held very few restrictions. This spurred the need to create my own guidelines through researching some key concepts that may contribute to my design process. I discovered that having a better understanding of the Fibonacci series and the Golden Section, along with an understanding of Malevich’s significance in art, I was able to keep to a general plan which helped inform my design process. 18

MALEVICH NOTES

Fun Facts I picked up along the way‌

Fibonacci Sequence in a nutshell = The first number of the sequence is 0, the second number is 1, and each subsequent number is equal to the sum of the previous two numbers of the sequence itself

! Golden Section = Closely related to the Fibonacci Sequence A ratio between two portions of a line, or the two dimensions of a plane figure, in which the lesser of the two is to the greater as the greater is to the sum of both: a ratio of approximately 0.618 to 1.000

! Malevich was a Russian painter and art theoretician He was a pioneer of geometric abstract art and the originator of the avant-garde, Suprematist movement. 19

MALEVICH NOTES Suprematism Term coined in 1915 by Kazimir Malevich for a new system of art. The term itself implied the supremacy of this new art in relation to the past. Malevich saw it as purely aesthetic and concerned only with form, free from any political or social meaning. He stressed the purity of shape, particularly of the square, and he regarded Suprematism as primarily an exploration of visual language comparable to contemporary developments in writing. John Milner

SANDBOX DREAMS This simple exercise focused primarily on the Sandbox tool. In both drawings, I used the stamp tool within the Sandbox toolbox in order to attach the building to the hills below.

The lattice panel exercise was especially interesting because I implemented all of the major techniques from the previous lessons in order to create a complex structure.

•

I imported a background image which was saved to my desktop to set the scene. I also used the same technique from the Malevich exercise to trace the main pattern used in the panels. 29

L A T T I C E PA N E L N O T E S The patterns seen here were created by tracing a single Moroccan tile (found online) and then copying the pattern in an array which, as a result formed the panel. This panel was then made into a component which was replicated throughout the structure.
