GEILO All Year All Year
JanuaryJune
Geilo is a travel destination that you can visit the year round. We get snow early, the winter is snow-secure, and in May, you can both ride a bicycle and go
cross country skiing. «The seasons» can be a little longer or shorter compared to other places; therefore, we have made this year wheel. It is simply an icon
that is sectioned for each month. January starts «up at 12 o’clock» in the circle. Welcome to the mountains all year long!

MORE Terrain Cycling
– and More than Terrain Cycling
Pedal ’n’ Roll (Tråkk ’n’ Roll) has as a goal to create growth in Hallingdal through development of the terrain bicycle offer. There are many good reasons to start a regional focus: The market is growing both in Norway and internationally; and several regions around us are already offensively focusing on the development of the terrain bicycle product. Our network of trails and mountain roads is extensive, the scenery out-
standing, and the infrastructure is good.
The project is led by Lars W. Jensen lars@mountainbiking.no See also www.trakknroll.no
Pedal ’n’ Roll is a project by and for terrain cyclists. If you have s uggestions or want to contribute to this work, please contact us.

Where: The Navvy Road Distance: 82 km, trafficfree road Surface: Gravel. Suitable for bicycle carts and hiking
Tip: The NSB train brochure, «Cycle and train along the Rallar Road» gives useful information about the road and the cultural heritage underway.
The Navvy Road is located between Oslo and Bergen. It is possible to bike the entire distance in one day, but calculate two to three days and time for some experiences. The most common is to start the journey from Haugastøl, Finse or Myrdal; and the most popular portion of the route is between Finse and Myrdal.
Cycling
Try out downhill biking or take a calm family trip. Geilo offers so many bicycle possibililties. In Geilo Summer Park, you take the chairlift up and bike on trails at the ski facility. You can choose between tough single tracks or simple gravel roads. There are also two new downhill tracks for children. The Ustedalsfjord Round goes out from the center of Geilo and is suitable for both family outings and training rounds. Stop by Fekjo Cultural Heritage Park or go for a swim at the nice, sandy beach. The Navvy Road (Rallarvegen) was built as a construction road for the Bergen Railway Line, and was completed in 1902. It was named by the Cyclists Association to be Norway’s best bicycle route. The Navvy Road is 80 km long and goes from Haugastøl to Finse, Hallingskeid, Myrdal and Flåm. There are daily bicycle-train departures during the summer season if you would like to bring your own bike with you, or you can rent a bike at Haugastøl, Finse, or Geilo.

Our tip is to taste the waffles – before you start on the 24 km back to Geilo.
Fatbike – A Must Experience Snow cycling on wide tires has become very popular in Norway. If you haven’t tried this yet, you can get your chance in Geilo. Super-wide tires give a large supporting surface and make it possible to bike on snow. A fatbike behaves quite simularly to a regular terrain bike, but biking on snow is both fun and adventurous. Fatbike Geilo organizes «miniexpedition trips» with guide and all equipment included. Contact: Fatbike Geilo, tlf. +47 99 34 93 41.

Hiking High and Free Norway is one of the few countries in the world where one can roam freely in nature. In Hol Municipality, where most of the area is mountainous and uncultivated land, we have a network of passage roads and trails that have existed for several hundred years. A large portion of these are cleared and marked. Here are wide plains and steep, mountain cliffs. Countless possibilities. The choice is yours.
Hallingskarvet / Prestholtrunden At the foot of the mighty Hallingskarvet, and at the entrance to the Hallingskarvet National Park, lies Prestholtseter. The stone steps up Prestholtskaret makes the summit trip a pure joy. The steps are laid with the expert help of Sherpas from Nepal. The Prestholt Round is approximately a 2-hour trip of 6.5 km. This is a great scenic hike, whether
one chooses to experience the sunrise, morning light, dusk, or perhaps the sunset. A road for driving goes in to the Prestholtseter from Geilo. The most fit can start the trip from the center of Geilo, follow the Pilvegen Road up to Geilohovda and further on westward past Gullsteinhovda and Urundberget.
Hardangervidda Fjellguiding
Hardangervidda Fjellguiding takes you on hiking trips in the mountain areas around Geilo. Experience the Hardanger vidda’s grandness and Âmystique, learn about plants and animal life in the area, and hear the stories about those who lived here in olden times. Geilo’s nearest neighbor in the west is the Hardangervidda, Northern Europe’s largest high- mountain plateau and Norway’s largest national park. The area is an eldorado for mountain hikers with or without a tent and fishing pole. The Norwegian Tourist Association (DNT) offers a network of well-marked trails and many cabin accommodations. Geilo, and several places along the RV7 highway, are great

starting points for a day trip or a week’s trip «from cabin to cabin.» In the summer, there are buses crossing the Hardangervidda, and the Tuva bus drives roundtrip Geilo—Tuva Tourist Cabin on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Hardangervidda is especially important as a habitat for the largest wild reindeer herds in Europe. So bring some binoculars with you in your rucksack!

Geilo / Ustedalsfjorden Round This is the perfect round-trip (10 km) that is suitable for the family – on foot or bicycle. From Geilojordet (the yard with ancient buildings) the popular nature and culture trail winds itself around the whole Ustedalsfjorden Lake. Information boards underway tell the history of Geilo’s plant and wildlife. Just over 2 km from Geilojordet, located at Geilo Beach. Here there is are great conditions for swimming on warm, summer days. The trail continues on past the Fekjo Cultural Heritage Park, where the landscape installation, «House for wind drawings and color tones» is very popular with the children. Also in the park are the Fekjo Burial Mounds from the Viking era (dated to about the year 900), an old hay barn, a stable, a very old trail, and an old stone wall. Barely 1 km further
on westward, the trip goes over Tuftebrua Bridge. The bridge is built in a special log construc tion and is a true copy of the old, protected bridge from 1884. On the south side, the trail winds up a little birch-covered hill, and then down again to the lake and back to the center of town via the golf course area in Vestlia. Along the way, there are several fishing spots, resting areas with barbeque facilities—and many fine viewpoints.

Local Food Producers
Food & Pride Terms used to describe local food have changed in the last years. Short-travelled, un-travelled, local food, small scale, and other terms are often used. Our chefs and food producers are extremely proud of the food they make. We have cheesemakers, meat processing companies, restaurants that use local food, delicatessens and grocery stores who all offer local food. Everything is produced here in this area. The hotels in Geilo also have access to all this, and many are good at putting this on the menu. Farmers and food producers are an unbelievably important part of your total experience in the area. We hope that you will find time to taste our local wares. At www.geilo.no you will find an overview over where you can purchase locally-produced food in Hol Municipality.
Jarle Rueslütten and his family make cheese and yoghurt at home on their farm. It tastes unbelievably good; and that’s not so strange, since the cows are entwined with beautiful nature, fresh air, and lush grazing lands. Jarle and his family are responsible for the craftsmanship of the cheesemaking. Good craftsmanships and good ingredients are a strong combination. www.rueslatten.no

What is it with Hallingskarvet?
PRESTHOLTSTIEN. PHOTO: EMILE HOLBA
There are many who have attempted to give an explanation of why this elongated plateau has such an important significance in people’s minds; yes, one can almost speak of a kind of infatuation in some people. The phenomenon is prominent for us who live here. We look up at Hallingskarvet with a little awe and the vast majority is in agreement that it is a great sight. The Hallingskarvet Plateau itself stretches approximately 35 kilometers in length and has a varying width from just a few hundred meters to several kilometers. It was formed several million years ago under the Caledonian orogeny. Geologists think that 450 million years is a good estimate. It is reasonable to assume that it wouldn’t have been nice to be there at the time. 52 |
Hallingskarvet National Park
After this, the ice age formed the landscape and gave us what we know today as Hallingskarvet. When a mountain has stood in the same place for so long, like a stronghold in the north end of the Hardangervidda, why did it have to be converted into a national park? Hallingskarvet has managed to take care of itself for all these years. By giving Hallingskarvet the status as
Hallingskarvet National Park • Approximately 450 square meters • Protected as national park by royal resolution on December 22, 2006. • Opened by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg on August 9, 2008. • Highest peak is Folardskardnuten with 1,933 meters elevation. • The plateau itself is approximately 35 km long, and varies in width from 1 – 5 km. • Many cultural relics are from trapping up to 8,000 years ago. • Important grazing areas for wild reindeer.
national park in 2006, we have preserved this area for posterity; so that it won’t be used for development of any kind. The wildlife and flora have also received an arena for the future. Preservation is important, and the national park has received its own protection regulations, that say something about the purpose of the protection.
All year
• A great and varied flora. • You can see the golden eagle, fox, wolverine, and many other species. • Attractive area for hunting and fishing.
The well-known philosopher, Arne Næss, has described the Hallingskarvet in the book, «The Good, Long Life’s Father.» When visiting the places he describes in the book, it can be understood that to be philosophical and thoughtful is possible when you get there.
Respect § 2. Purpose
The purpose of the Hallingskarvet National Park is to preserve a large, distinctive, and almost untouched, mountain area; so that the landscape and the biological diversity of ecosystems, species and populations, among others, wild reindeer, are preserved. The protection shall ensure a characteristic landscape element, which is important for the understanding of the geological history. The general public shall have the opportunity for outdoor recreation and nature experiences through the practice of traditional and simple outdoor life, with little degree of technical facilitation. The protection shall ensure the valuable cultural heritage. With the protection status, there also was allotted funds for a position in the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate (SNO). The office is localized at the Tourism Information Center in Geilo. The SNO shall oversee the national park and preserve nature’s biological diversity. There are many ways to perform this duty; but the most important, is information and guidelines in regard to how we all can use the national park in such a way that the area continues to be a great arena for experience and recreation.
Hallingskarvet is a mountain that deserves a strong level of respect. There are far more days where the weather conditions are too poor for outings, than fine days that are suit able for hikes. That is, perhaps, what makes it extra appealing. Rescue operations occur occasionally, and it is usually the rapid weather changes that surprises people. The mountain lies on the watershed; and thus, can storm from both the east and west. It is, therefore, often advisable to check the weather both at Finse and at Geilo when you have plans to go hiking. It can give an indication of what to expect. It is free for everyone to use the national park for hiking and recreation. Motor traffic, how ever, is not permitted; so if you need to use motorized vehicles in the national park, you must apply to the administrative authority, which is the county mayor. You must also apply regarding organized activities, except for skiing and hiking. In any case, it is important to pay attention to the animal and plant life. Traces of human traffic last many years this high in the mountains.

Mountain Pioneers When you are hiking in our beautiful countryside, whether high in the mountains or on wooded hillsides, you have a good chance of passing quite a lot of cultural heritage. You won’t see most of them. They are hidden under peat or stone, or they blend into the scenery so well that you don’t notice them.
Lord Garvagh
Others are marked or signed in such a way that you can get a small glimpse into the prehistory of Hol Municipality. There have been both permanent and sporadic settlements back to the Stone Age; and here, there have been very attractive hunt ing areas for people who lived in the lowlands and eventually became a permanent settlement with agriculture as their main livelihood. There are several thousand cultural relics in Hol Municipality—most of them have automatically been protected, but many are also accessible. You are welcome to visit them. Hol Municipality is currently one of the country’s largest tourism municipalities. The first tourists here were the English upper class and middle class people that looked upon Norway, and not least, the mountains here as very exotic, and came here for many years. In Hol, we consider the Lords Garvagh from Ireland as our first tourists. They came to our mountains around 1860, and built 13 hunting cabins in the mountains here; and many of them are still standing. After a while, guests from other countries appreciated hiking in the mountains here. Many of these were artists who captured a lot of it on canvas. After the Norwegian Tourist Association (DNT) was esta-

blished in 1868, hiking was facilitated in the mountains. Krækkja Tourist Cabin became the first on the Hardangervidda Plateau. The farmers received the guests both at farms and the summer dairy farms, and were often mountain guides for the guests that wanted to go to the West Coast. In 1880, we got our first hotel, Geilo Hotell; and with the opening of the Bergen Railway Line in 1909, tourism came in full force. We hope that you can take your time when you are in Hol Munici pality. Time to hike in the mountains, time to enjoy the many wonderful viewpoints, time to enjoy the many, local dishes we can offer you, time to get to know our cultural history, and not least—time to get to know us who live here. The residents of Hol are an open people! And we are proud of our traditions and of our municipality, and we would like you to also become fond of it as well.

Happy fishing! What tastes better than self-caught, pan-fried mountain trout, simmered in sour cream? Chances are good to get a bite. You can choose between 90 fishing waters and rivers, located from 445 to 1,523 meters elevation. There are many fishing spots; from small, idyllic ponds to large, open lakes in the mountains, as well as good stretches for fly fishermen at the Holselva River at the very bottom of the municipality. Most waters have trout; but in some, there is also char. The fish size is preferably between 100-1,000 grams; but each year fish up to 3 kg are caught. Fishing is a fine activity for the smallest in the family, and can teach them to appreciate nature. Remember that fishing for children and youths under 16 years is free. Fishing is suitable for everyone, and is relatively easily accessible窶馬ot least here in the mountain municipality in upper Hallingdal.

I release the reel, the line shoots faster over the water, while the fly lure falls feather-light down on the shiny membrane. Perfect! There arises an intense excitement, everything is about the high- floating imitation. I give it a little movement—and then the trout bites! With a reckless behavior, the beast fights around in the free waters. Eventually, the fish finds a place in my net, gold-colored with dense, black spots, and with touches of red over the wide body sides. These are experiences that satisfy most of the

Fishing Tips Remember that the ice melts late in the high mountains. Lakes up in the high-alpine areas, like Skorpa and Hallingskarvet, are often not ice-free before way out in July. In addition, if the late summer and autumn have been cold, the fish won’t bite. Concentrate instead on the lakes that are located in more low-lying regions. Access to nutrients are often limited in the high mountains; and, therefore, the water is almost crystal clear. This means that the fish can be easily frightened. Pay attention when you move
along the bank (the trout can be found very close to the shore), and don’t use a heavier line than necessary. If you use a colorful multifilament, it is a good idea to tie on a leader with a more «invisible» monofilament line. Lures give consistently the best results, especially in the high mountains. Colors and varieties don’t mean everything—the presentations is more important. Herring lures are always effective, because they are long-casting and go deep. In shallower waters, where distance isn’t as important, the traditional spoon lures, wobblers, and spinners are good.
On warm days, with lots of insects on the water surface, the fly imitations could be a good choice. If you aren’t a dedicated fly angler with a fly rod, etc, toss floats and flies work just as well. Variations of the Streaking Caddie almost always work as an all-round fly in most of the lakes in Hol Municipality. Mild, cloudy weather, with a light breeze, is a good starting point for the fish to bite. Don’t be swayed by categorical advice and tips. The big ones have a tendency to show up when you least expect them to do so.

Fishing License Areas for Østre Hol Jeger og Fiskeforening
Most of the lakes that the association manages are located within the Hallingskarvet National Park, from Ynglesdalen to, among others, Kyrkjedørsvatna. The lakes are stocked with trout regularly, so the populations are generally good and are relative to the food avail ability. The flesh quality is usually good with a nice red color. Fishing license: Can be purchased at, among other places, Raggsteindalen Tourist Cabin, Storestølen Mountain Lodge, Myrland Tourist Center, Statoil Hol and Kiwi Hagafoss. More Information: Check www.njff.no for information about Eastern Hol Hunting and Fishing Association.
Fishing License Areas for Geilo Jeger- og Fiskerforening
The area consists of, among others, Ustedalsvassdraget, which passes centrally through Geilo. From Kikut and westward to Grødalen, we find several good lakes; for example, Store Hakkeset. Above the Hallingskarvet Ski Center, Halletjønn should be named. North for Hauga støl are several alternatives; and last, but not least, 1-hour’s walk from Tuva Tourist Cabin, Skjerja tempts you with trout around one kilo. Fishing License: Among other places, diverse sports stores, Geilo Tourism Center, diverse accommodation companies. More information: Under the portal, www.njff.no, you will find information regarding Geilo Hunting and Fishing Association.
Budalsvatnet
The lake lies idyllically close to the Budalsvegen Road, with a wonderful view of the Hallingskarvet. Good population with some large trout Fishing License: Payment at fishing license box by the eastern parking lot.
Sudndalsfjorden
Medium population, sometimes big fish. Notice that parts of the lake are excluded to the public (see the map on the fishing license). Fishing License: Myrland Tourist Center and Storestølen Mountain Lodge.
Skorpa State Common Lands
In Sveingardsbotn, north for FV50, it is possible to gain access to the high, alpine Skorpa. Steep and, at times, tough terrain to hike in, but several exciting lakes, where the mountain administration has stocked with fish in later years. Fishing License: Free angling. More information: www.hol-fjellstyre.no
Bakkahellern and Region
Geiteryggvatna, Bakkahellertjørnane and Omnsvatnet are located in a fantastic, high-mountain landscape. Especially the last-named part of the area, in itself, is well worth a visit. The trout population is variable, but big fish can be found in this river system. Fishing License: Geiterygg Tourist Cabin.
Innoset in the Hovsfjord and Westward
Tuva Sameige
Via gravel roads in South Hovet or «Ruud Bridge» there is easy access to this part of the river; which in periods, can offer fun fishing with possibilities for bigger trout, especially in the bottom part toward the Hovsfjorden.
In the area around the Tuva Tourist Cabin, there are many possibilities for those who wish an easy terrain, as well as a relatively short way to the fishing waters, with still having the feeling of being out on the Hardangervidda. The populations range from dense to balanced and good.
Fishing License: Birkelund Camping and Holestøl Apartment.
Fishing License: Among other places, Tuva Tourist Cabin.
Holsfjorden
Although the Holsfjorden is located close to the FV50 throughout the whole Hol village, you it can be a little challenging to find good fishing spots from land, if you don’t have local knowledge. Access to a boat is beneficial. Plentiful trout of fine quality from 350 grams to close to 1 kilo. Larger fish of 3-4 kilo have also occurred. Char is frequently among the catch. Fishing License: Among others, Kiwi Hagafoss.
Hol River
The intake river to Strandafjorden has, with its burly trout that periodically wander up from the fjord, become a concept for many fly fishermen. That stretch of river has a strict management regime with specific rules for fishing methods, equipment, maximum fish size, zoning, etc. Read the fishing regulations closely! Fishing License: www.inatur.no More Information: www.fiskeihemsedal.no (here you will find a separate link for the Hol River).
Lågen from Øvre Svangtjørne and Westward to Ossjøen and Heinelvi
From the Heinelvi in the Hardangervidda, the Lågen makes its way via the Ossjøen. Here the river course continues through the Seterdalen Valley and, eventually, the Dagali Village. The indigenous trout in the river are usually smaller; but in periods, large fish wander up from adjacent waters. The Ossjøen can report on great catches with sport fishing equipment. Fishing License: Joker Dagali Handel, Dagali Hotell, Oset Fjellstue and Åan Tourist Cabin.
Lower Part of the Skurdalsvatnet
Varied population of trout and char. Pleasant surroundings well protected with conifer forests on all sides. Fishing License: Knuts Cabin Village and Grøsland Camping.

Hol Gamle Kyrkje Hol gamle kyrkje stands nicely and peacefully by the Holsfjorden. The church was built as a small stave church in the 1200’s. Later, it was expanded and rebuilt several times. Just the apse, the semicircular section toward the east, has been preserved from the original stave church. The two old buildings, Kyrkjestugu and Prestestugu stand close by.

Alpine and Snowboard September - April
In the Geilo area, you will find over 50 alpine slopes, large and small snow parks, and many frolic areas.
Geilo devotes considerable resources to pave the way for everyone who uses the ski facilities. Well-groomed slopes in all categories, efficient ski lifts, ski patrol, and separate areas for the small ones, ensure safe and good ski experiences regardless of skill level. The ski slopes are located close to the center. You can ski down the slopes, take off your skis, and walk right into the stores and restaurants. In Geilo, you can rent modern equipment in all categories. At the ski rental, you can also get help to adjust bindings, and prepare and upgrade your own equipment. Do you want to fine-tune your skiing techniques? The ski schools in Geilo have knowledgeable and experienced instructors that can teach you and give tips on how you can become better on snow. Not far from Geilo, you will find both the Hallingskarvet Ski Center and Dagali Fjellpark. Hallingskarvet Ski Center is a hidden gem 33 kilo-

meters from Geilo in the direction of Aurland. Here you will find slopes up to 3 kilometers long with an elevation difference of 510 meters, a park developed by X -Games winner, Andreas Håtveit, and freeskiing in a class for itself. Dagali Fjellpark is located 24 kilo meters in the other direction, toward Kongsberg. Here you will find a family-friendly facility with 5 long slopes, a separate children’s lift, as well as rental of sleds and airbords. In addition to this, Lia Fjellhotell in Skurdalen has its own ski slope and ski lift.
Children Love Geilo In Geilo, children get a good ski experience. We have a wellfacilitated offer for families with children. Nice children’s areas with figures and jumps, lifts and slopes customized for children. Here they can have fun in safe surroundings. Fun activities for the little ones are organized all winter at the ski facility. Join in on the children’s skiing fairytale, slalom competition and sledding. And why is it that only adults get to go to after-ski? In Geilo, the children have their very own after-ski with barbequing of bread twists on a skewer, and many fun activities. If the children want some time off from skiing, they can play for a few hours at the Trollklubben day-care facility, together with children from the whole world. A stay at the cozy log house in Geilolia is popular for the young, and gives mom and dad an opportunity to enjoy a few hours together on skis.

Winter Joy for Everyone Have you had enough of ski slopes, or are most happy without skis on your feet, as we Norwegians are reported to have on when we are born? Geilo has lots of other fun and exciting things to offer. You just have to decide what you prefer. Dive into one of Geilo’s sledding hills, try fatbike cycling on snow, or drive your own dog sled over glistening white plains. The climbing park is open every Thursday during the winter, and if you like motor action, you can try snowmobiling or drive on an ice track with rally cars. What about a kicksled or snowshoe trip? Both can be rented at the Tourism Information Center. Guided snowshoe trips can also be organized.
When the evening decends upon Geilo, there isn’t anything nicer than going on a sleigh ride. Snuggle under warm pelts and enjoy the experience and the view. If you would like even more of horse activities, you can go horseback riding in the winter woods.
For groups and company events, Geilo has several good event providers that deliver every thing you need. Contact us at post@geilo.no, and we will put you in touch.
These are the experiences that can give you great joy by just sitting and reading a good book. Or perhaps charge your batteries with a spa experience that gives you energy for a hectic schedule.

National Park Village Under the powerful and majestic Hallingskarvet, with the sweeping Hardangervidda plains in the west, you will find the national park village, Geilo. Geilo received its status as a national park village because of its prox imity to two unique national parks: Hardangervidda and Hallingskarvet. The national parks are created to take care of large nature areas; for us, for coming generations, and for nature’s sake. That doesn’t mean that the nature shouldn’t be used! National Park Village
The national park villages are a national initiative to increase the value creation in relation to some of the 44 national parks in Norway. Approximately 10% of mainland Norway is protected as national parks, and the areas are to be used for recreation and other activities that don’t harm the conservation values. Five villages around Norway have received the status of national park village: Lom, Jondal, Vingelen, Storslett and Geilo. All five form good gateways to several of Norway’s beautiful national parks. Welcome!
