NEW SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES arlham College is offering two new scholarship initiatives to the community. WHITEWATER VALLEY STUDENT OF THE YEAR High school guidance counselors in the Whitewater Valley are invited each month to recommend a Student of the Month. Eligible students have at least a 3.4 grade point average. Sponsored by Earlham and Richmond radio station G101.3, monthly recipients are honored and announced on the air. In April, Earlham will select the Whitewater Valley Student of the Year and award a scholarship ranging in annual value from $22,000 to full tuition. PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP FOR OUTSTANDING INDIANA STUDENTS Earlham has also launched a new Promise Scholarship for outstanding Indiana students.
Eligible scholars are guaranteed a fouryear scholarship worth $22,000. Students must be Indiana residents and have either a 3.75 grade point average and be in the top 10 percent of the class ranking, or have a 3.5 grade point average and be in the top 25 percent of the class and a minimum SAT score of 1190 (CR+M) or a 26 ACT composite score. Indiana students who are class valedictorians may qualify for a scholarship with an annual value of $30,000. Additionally, Lily Scholars are guaranteed to have a total scholarship package valued at tuition, fees, room and board. Estate gift to enhance facilities, establish endowment for Athletics and Wellness Center
Earlham College’s Athletics and Wellness Center (AWC) will receive a facelift next year thanks to the bequest from the late Ivan Druley ’29 and Pauline Kniese Druley ’31, two of the institution’s longest-tenured supporters. The Beeson farm in Milton, Ind., which had been in Pauline’s family since 1814, was sold on Nov. 5 at auction for $1.94 million and stands as one of the largest alumni gifts donated to the College. The couple met at Earlham about 90 years ago and married in 1937. Common interests linked them. Ivan, or Druley, as he was commonly known, was a standout three-sport athlete at Earlham, and Pauline enjoyed attending athletic events. “They appreciated the academic education they received here, but (Ivan) said it was the combination of athletics and academics that taught him about hard work and discipline,” says Avis Stewart ’74, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Community Relations. “He attributed athletics with helping him to become the person he wanted to be.” Stewart became friends with the Druleys as they were familiar faces at campus activities. “Throughout their lives they came to games and other events,” says Kim Tanner ’90, associate vice president for Institutional Advancement. “After graduation, they stayed involved with Earlham and came to everything. Even when she was 100 (years old) she came to homecoming and the president’s talks. They were always very active and stayed engaged with Earlham.”
In 1997, the Druleys decided to bequest the farm to Earlham to be used toward the AWC. In 1995, the Druleys contributed toward the construction of the Athletics and Wellness Center, and the indoor track and the Hall of Fame room are named in their honor. Immediate plans from the proceeds of the farm are to resurface the multi-sport practice room and indoor track. The remaining money will fund an endowment for the ongoing maintenance of the center and other campus athletic facilities. “They knew the benefit that athletics has on students’ lives, and they also knew that the AWC helps bridge the Earlham and Richmond communities,” Stewart says. “They felt good when they saw Earlham students and community members exercising together on the AWC track. They were outstanding philanthropists, not just to Earlham but to the community at large.”

Earlhamite Impact
E
arlhamites marched in Richmond on Dec. 5 to spread awareness about the struggle of Syrian refugees resettling in the United States. During the march, students handed out flowers to community members with each flower containing a story about a refugee.
Following the mid-November terrorist attacks on Paris, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence announced he would block Syrian refugees from settling in Indiana until proper security measures were in place. One Syrian family has since been diverted to Connecticut, according to a report by the Associated Press.
“We are hoping that with a march we can put ourselves out there a little bit,” says Grace Makhoul ’18, a native of Syria and copresident of the Student Executive Council. “We want to share our perspective with those who may be against having refugees here. We want to make an impact.”

Amy Howard, of Eaton, Ohio, has come full circle. After starting her undergrad studies at Purdue’s West Lafayette campus, she decided that Richmond would be a better fit; so she made the move and got her bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership and supervision in 2014. “It was nothing against the main campus, but I was 18 years old and not as prepared and focused as I should have been,” Howard recalls. Keeping the credits she’d earned in West Lafayette, Howard enrolled at Richmond where she settled in easily and found her focus. “The smaller class sizes really benefited me. I had a much different relationship with my professors than at the main campus. It felt like family to me.”

still an undergraduate. She’s also on track to earn a master’s degree in leadership, technology and innovation through Purdue Polytechnic’s ProSTAR program. ProSTAR combines some weekend classes in West Lafayette with online learning. Howard says Richmond made her ready for ProSTAR. “For me, the biggest blessing of the Richmond campus was the faculty — all the way from my advisors to my professors. And the types of classes they offer really prepared me for my graduate classes. I have learned so much from them, and the personal bonds we’ve built have just been phenomenal.”
Another big plus for Howard was the cost savings. “I have paid for all of my education on my own, and despite being from Ohio, I was still able to take advantage of in-state tuition at the Purdue campus in Richmond. That’s a great benefit, too,” she says. Today, Howard is working full time as a facility manager at Airgas in Richmond, a gas, safety-supply and welding-equipment distributor where she started working while
