Dear Chamber Friends: It’s an exciting time for our community. The businesses along Chester Boulevard and National Road West have perservered through 2 years of construction, made adjustments and patiently awaited the opening of two beautiful new roads. Now that they’re open and the NW 5th Street bridge is complete, we encourage you to do business with the organizations along those roads. The US 40 project completion comes with extra satisfaction since it includes a brand new traffic light at the entrance of Earlham College. As we get ready to officially cut the ribbon on US 40, this edition of the Chamber Voice gives us a chance to spotlight a few of our Chamber members in the neighborhood – Tony’s Car Sales, Mancino’s Pizza & Grinders, Marsh Hometown Market, Doan & Mills Funeral Home and KFC/Taco Bell. While we’re celebrating the completion of the road construction, there is a whole host of exciting news in Wayne County. Check out page 10 for a list of just some of the successes over the last few months. Be a part of the excitement. If you’re a Chamber member, stay involved in Chamber activities. If you’re not a member, JOIN US! Go to our website or call and talk to a Chamber staff member to learn more about how the Chamber can work for you and your business.

Tony’s Car Sales 250 National Road West, Richmond, Indiana cars.com/tonyscarsales • Chamber Member Since 1999

Mike Parker sits at the computer. He just sold a car to a man in Chicago and is working on selling another to a buyer in Columbus. While he’s doing that, another customer walks in and arranges to test drive what would be his 6th Buick from Tony’s Car Sales. Mike remembers the first one he sold him 20 plus years ago. Mike’s nephew Adrian (his business partner) diligently helps the gentleman transfer what he needs into the other vehicle. Mike and his brother Dan bought the 60+ year old business from their

Dad in 1997. Dan passed away in 2007 and now Mike and Adrian run the business together. Mike’s been in the business since he was 15 and he just celebrated his 56th birthday. Tony’s has always been customer focused. They pride themselves on being the “friendliest lot in town.” Mike notes Tony’s does everything they can to earn your business. He says,“When I take your keys to appraise your vehicle, I hand them back to you until you say you want to sell.” They also do full auto service and detailing.

Their cars come from auto auctions and off the street. It’s a different business than it was a few years ago. Besides internet sales, now 20% of their business, every vehicle he buys has a condition report so there’s no mystery about a car’s past. However, Mike has a developed a pretty good eye and can spot body work before he reads the report. Mike says they have very loyal customers… multiple generations from some families. He boasts he recently traded in 2 cars he had sold the family 10 years ago. Mike and Adrian are ready for your visit.

Mancino’s Pizza and Grinders

217 National Road West, Richmond, Indiana Chamber Member Since 1995

Mark Medley got his start in the food business from his stepfather,A.C. VanPelt when he was 16. A graduate of Northeastern High School, he went from working at the Famous Recipe every Sunday to managing his first restaurant at age 19, to owning his own franchises. Mark now owns Mancino’s in Richmond and New Castle with his business partners Beth Medley and Wayne Shafer. Mark also has BellVending which works with corporate and industrial clients for vending services.

Mark says their employees make the business work and credits the success of the Richmond store to the new management team with manager, Tyler Hamm at the helm. Mark especially enjoys working with high school and college students. He said “As a rule students that are active in extracurricular activities such as such as sports, cheerleading and band are responsible, well organized and personable which are the skills we need.” Mancino’s in Richmond has about 16

employees. The restaurant works a lot with Richmond High School and you can have a Mancino’s pizza at most Richmond athletic events. Mancino’s, Mark says, is constantly packaging deals to offer their customers. They try to keep their pricing competitive and they have always made their own bread and pizza dough on site fresh every day. They’ve also recently added delivery services.

Marsh Hometown Market

501 National Road West, Richmond, Indiana • 765-966-2592 www.marsh.net • Chamber Member Since 1975

Matt Sutherland has been the manager at the Westside Marsh for about a year, but before that he was the manager at the E Street store and he’s been with the company for 23 years. The store employs 7580 people full and parttime and many of his current employees have been with the company a long time, some since before the store became Marsh. Matt says in Marsh stores the customer is their number 1 priority. They cross train their employees and focus on personal service to customers. Marsh tries to cater to the neighborhood they live in.With the number of Earlham students in their area, they carry more products students want. They also have arrangements with specialty vendors to accommodate customer requests. Marsh works on ways to connect with their customers. Senior Citizens get a 5% discount on Thursdays

and there’s a long running Baby Rewards Program for young families. Signs all over the store tout the Great American Cookout Sweepstakes running this summer. One would think most of their customers are from the Westside of Wayne County, but Matt says,“Depending where they work or what they’re looking for, we have customers from all over. I know of one lady who lives in Lynn.” Some of what people travel for is probably their perishable departments (meat and produce). They have full-time meat cutters on duty 7 days a week and they can custom cut meat for you.The produce department will also put together a custom fruit and veggie tray just right for any occasion. Marsh works to buy Indiana grown produce and donates to the food banks through Gleaners twice a week. They also support several local charities.

Mayer Management – KFC/Taco Bell

1428 National Road West, Richmond, Indiana 765-966-4823 • Chamber Member Since 1976

Lynn Mayer didn’t start out in the food service business. He went to school, completed multiple degrees, joined the military and became a stock broker. Then, fortunately for our community, Lynn and his family came to Richmond in 1974 specifically to open 2 KFC franchises. They relocated from New York where Lynn was working for Merrill Lynch. Lynn’s sons worked in the business since they were in high school. James has taken over as Director of Operations and part owner. Lynn’s other son; David is an attorney for ESPN. The Mayer’s have made many changes over the years to their business. They added the KFC/Taco Bell in 2000 and acquired 3 Taco Bell restaurants in Richmond and Eaton, Ohio in 2006.Affordable catering has become an increasingly important part of their business. Mayer Management employs 125 people which contributes over $1.5 million in payroll and benefits to the local community. The Mayer family is very active in the community and long been involved in the arts, youth sports, and the school system.

Doan & Mills Funeral Home

790 National Road West, Richmond, Indiana • 765-966-0596 www.doanmillsfuneralhome.com • Chamber Member Since 1991

Ernie Mills has known since he was 16 that he wanted to dedicate his life to serving families through funeral service. He began with Doan and Johnson Funeral Home, as an Earlham College student. After graduating in 1957 with an economics degree, he worked at the funeral home through graduation from Indiana College of Mortuary Science. Ernie remembers certain days very vividly…. November 17, 1967 he put the “Mills” in Doan & Mills Funeral Home and became the owner of the funeral home with his wife Betty. The other date that slips right off his tongue is January 29, 1974….the opening of the new funeral home on National Road West. Today, the business also includes Mills Funeral Home in Centerville, and

there are 7 caring and professional fully-licensed Funeral Directors and an administrative staff. Ernie has seen many changes in his industry, especially in the dimension of services they offer including advice and guidance in making prearrangements and often times funding a funeral trust; visitation and funeral services followed by burial or cremation. The company website answers some key questions for families, hosts recent and archived obituaries, an online guestbook for family condolences and many other services. Ernie says that the most important aspect of funeral service is the opportunity to assist people in their time of need, and he cherishes the many friendships he continues to create.
