For the first time in two years, many of us are celebrating in a familiar way with friends and family. Festive lights are brightening up neighbourhoods; decorating is in full swing, and shopping for memorable gifts has begun.
Congratulations to Prickly Pear Garden, the winner of the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl’s best scarecrow competition! The Steveston Merchants Association awarded Prickly Pear a grand prize of $1,000 for their creation, Webster the Spider. On Halloween afternoon, trick-ortreaters donned their costumes and flocked to participating merchants who handed out treats. The merchants went all out for Girls’ Night Out and made it a successful evening of Christmas shopping and socializing.
Thanks to Tourism Richmond, the Steveston Merchants Association, and the City of Richmond, Winter in the Village is taking place in December, starting with the Christmas Classic Car Cruise at 12:15pm and Santa arriving by boat at 1pm on December 4! Horse carriage rides will circle the village on December 4 and 11. See all the events on page 38.

THE GLASS HOUSE: A Vision for Steveston

Optician Erik Bucaneg recently fulfilled his dream of opening an optical store in Steveston village. The Glass House opened in August; here, you will find original eyewear collections that showcase individuality.
The amiable business owner unintentionally got his start in the optical industry 11 years ago. Raised in Richmond, Erik headed to Nelson, B.C., to study music. While living in the small town, he worked part-time in an optical store.
With a smile, Erik says, “I fell into the industry, but developed a passion and love for helping people. It is a highly rewarding feeling to give people the gift of better vision.”
When he returned to the Lower Mainland, Erik detoured from his plan to be a studio musician (he’s a talented guitar player) and instead trained to be an optician and earned his license in 2015.
Erik began his career working in a clinic and then managed a small boutique in Vancouver. In 2019 he had an innovative idea to operate a mobile practice where he saw clients in their homes and offices.
“It was tailored to busy people who didn’t have time to visit a brick-and-mortar shop,” says Erik. He built his client base through referrals and

travelled as far as Whistler. Although he enjoyed his roving business, he grew tired of being on the road. An opportunity arose to lease the Chatham Street storefront across from Save-OnFoods.
He says, “I decided to plant my roots. I enjoyed Nelson and Steveston has a familiar small town, community feeling. It’s a big step for me, and I am thrilled to be in one place. Owning and operating my shop offers me an opportunity to develop meaningful, long-term relationships with my clients. I wanted to put my vision into the business.”
Erik comments, “We strive to showcase the beauty in simplicity, displayed through our curated eyewear collections, to our customdesigned and hand-built furniture.”
The open-concept space feels like a blend between an industrial studio and a welcoming dining room; a magnificent live-edge Douglas Fir table takes centre stage, and a eye-catching contemporary chandelier hangs overhead.
Preparing the shop for its opening was a labour of love, thanks to teamwork from Erik’s friends and family. They helped build the shop’s three tables that Erik designed; a friend with a metal shop even taught him to weld to construct the tables’ bases. Erik’s mother created three striking paintings that hang on the back walls.
The Glass House has no display cases; wooden shelves line the walls with frames to try on. Erik is eager to have customers experiment with different frames. In the future, he will also offer eye exams.
“The Glass House is not defined by the brands it carries but rather by the excellence in the quality of care we provide. Our world is incredibly diverse, and we take a personalized approach to understanding our client’s unique wants and needs. Eyewear is the perfect bridge between fashion and function. We provide our clients with a clearer perspective and vessels of selfexpression,” says Erik.

The Glass House was inspired by an appreciation for design, style, and craftsmanship.
The store does not sell the traditional designer brands found in many stores; instead, Erik prefers to carry frames from smaller designers from Los Angeles, Italy, Germany, and Japan. He says, “Construction, design and quality are more important to me than a logo.”
Erik embraces style and owns 30 pairs of glasses which he pairs with different outfits. He is happy to help his customers find a frame that will make them feel comfortable expressing their personalities. He remarks, “I can help build your eyewear wardrobe. I start with the shape of a face and look at a client’s colouring, skin tone, eyes, and features. The goal is to emphasize their look to help them feel confident and happy.”
People have been discovering the store and are pleased with this new addition to Steveston. It can be hard to find parking in the village, so parking out front is a bonus.
Erik says, “I want people to feel comfortable in this safe space where they can get adventurous trying on frames.”

SOS CHILDREN'S VILLAGE THRIFT STORE FOUNDATION

On October 29, 2022, the SOS Children’s Village Thrift Store Foundation celebrated its 30th anniversary in Steveston village. Community members modelled clothing from the store, local band The Lindas performed, and a 50 per cent off sale raised funds for SOS Children’s Village to support children in foster care and youth aging out of the care system in B.C.
In 1992, SOS Children’s Village BC founders Lois and Gilles Bouchard opened the Steveston thrift store; it was initially known as Treasure Cottage Thrift Shop and was located in what is now home to Village Bikes on Moncton Street. In 1997, the Steveston store moved to its current site and expanded in 2012. A second storefront opened in Kerrisdale in 2006; it permanently closed in 2020. The thrift stores built a reputation as community hubs where one could find great deals with profits supporting their charitable headquarters, SOS Children’s Village BC, in Surrey.

The heart of the non-profit thrift store relies heavily on donations and volunteers who devote time to help run the shop.
In May 2019, Yasmin Tang worked briefly at the Kerrisdale store and then shifted to Steveston as assistant manager. When long-time manager Barb High retired, Yasmin took over as store manager.
She had an ambitious plan to transform the shop, which was interrupted by the COVID-19 lockdown. On a positive note, Yasmin says, “The bad turned out to be good. I used this golden closed-door opportunity to revamp the store with my daughters and husband. We created a new layout and a nice visual presentation.”
They created a boutique in the middle aisle with red tags to identify higher-end clothing. A shoe wall was built, and a men’s section was installed. An antique corner was designated, and a jewellery display table was set up for luxury items, with all valuables safely locked up.
“We sell basics for everyday needs for a few dollars an item. However, we also carry collector items for hundreds of dollars, like Rolex and Gucci.”
The store shifted direction and recruited volunteer experts who researched online the value of donations, including watches, jewellery,
paintings, antiques, and art pieces. Prices were adjusted to reflect actual worth, which in turn helps raise more money for SOS Children’s Village. There have been many positive comments from shoppers who have noticed the changes, although Yasmin admits there were a few complaints about price increases. She explains that the thrift shop’s mission is to fundraise as much as it can to support foster children in danger and who need care.

She says, “When the store reopened in July 2020, it gave a ‘wow’ feeling when customers stepped back inside.”
The store could not operate without its loyal staff and team of approximately 60 volunteers.
Assistant manager Susan Mckenzie has been with the store for one year. “With her assistance, we are building a solid team with senior volunteers and young high school students. It's a great combination of three generations. It’s an SOS family!” says Yasmin.
Yasmin remarks, “The staff and volunteers risked their safety during the pandemic to work at the store and process generous donations to assist B.C. foster children in need. Our long-range goal is to open more Villages and thrift stores in B.C.”
Yasmin indicates she and the volunteers have many good tales to tell. One of the most heartwarming stories is when they found $1,200 cash inside a box. They traced the donor, who confirmed she had accidentally included the money. In appreciation, the woman conducted a fundraising campaign in her new seniors’ residence to thank SOS Children’s Village for returning her money.
The rewards of working at SOS Children’s Village Thrift Store are plentiful. Yasmin says, "Customers love our window displays and say they are a must-see. Although we have never won a prize in local competitions, our customers’ comments are rewarding. Our sales have doubled, our volunteers love working here, and the neighbouring restaurant gives us a free meal every Thursday to recognize our hard work, especially for our volunteers who work outdoors, rain or shine, accepting donations.”
“I live in Mount Pleasant in Vancouver, but I connected quickly to Steveston’s businesses and have gotten great support from them. I love this community. It was funny, in 2020, Mount Pleasant and Steveston were finalists in CBC’s Best Neighbourhood
