How does massage help heal injuries?

When our body has an injury, whether it is whiplash, overuse, strain, or degeneration such as arthritis, its natural reaction is to protect and stabilize the injured area. In doing so, our muscles over-react and get too tight; when muscles are too tight, it causes decreased blood flow through the tissues. This can impair healing, cause joints to be held together too tightly, decrease mobility, and nerves can become compressed – which may lead to numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and pain.

Massage therapy increases circulation and blood flow, which promotes healthy tissues and aids in healing. Massage also helps loosen tight muscles and decreases fascial adhesions – allowing muscles, nerves, bones and joints to move more easily and with less discomfort.

While many of our clients seek out massage for injuries, many come for the prevention of injuries. Having a massage regularly can help maintain and improve tissue flexibility for optimal health.
