A Greener Future RESTORING THE WOODS
The woodland at Crofton House School is a special place for students to play and learn. It provides a natural environment and a green space to improve air quality and reduce noise in the neighbourhood.
In 2022, e orts began to restore and preserve this area. Over the past 10 months, new trees have been planted, invasive species removed and native plants reintroduced.
Supported by donations from our families and alumnae, this ongoing project will help ensure the woods continue to be a magical place for generations to come.

Dunbar Village Business Association
Message from DVBA President, Vicki Bell
Hello, summer! Such a glorious and warm spring made it feel as though summer arrived early. It’s no wonder summer is many people’s favourite season. We hope you can find time to take a peaceful walk in Pacific Spirit Park and enjoy meals in your backyard or on a restaurant’s patio as the sun dips down.
Judah Down, the man behind the initials JD’s Barbershop, is featured on the cover. Judah opened JD’s Dunbar location at 4345 Dunbar in May 2016 but has provided top-notch haircuts, beard trims, hot shaves, and superior service to his clients for over twenty-seven years. Read more in this issue about his love for this community.
We are also pleased to profile New District at 5650 Dunbar Street. New District opened their doors seven years ago and is a fullservice liquor store with a fantastic selection of wine. Summer is a time to relax, gather with friends and family and dine outdoors. When looking for a refreshing, chilled beverage, head to New District’s cooler, where you will find an impressive variety of single cans of chilled local craft and domestic beer, cider, coolers, and white wine.
The Dunbar Village Business Association is excited to announce that a neighbourhood street plaza will be opening at Dunbar and West 27th in mid-June. This is a muchanticipated partnership between Dunbar businesses and the City of Vancouver.
The businesses are enthusiastic about using this space in the community but, a neighbourhood plaza should be grounded in community partnership and evolve in ways that are connected to the community. It should be managed in collaboration with members of the public, community groups, businesses and property owners. These partnerships will be essential to creating opportunities for community involvement and a sense of ownership.
In his book “Culture: Power of the Place,” Michael Kimmelman says: “Feeling in the middle of things, at the place to and from which streets flow, where people come not to escape the city but to be inside it: This is usually what defines a successful square. It is a space around which the rest of a neighbourhood or town or city tends to be organized.”
The plazas of Vancouver are as unique as the neighbourhoods where they are found. Some host evenings of music or literature, some have weekly bingo nights, and some enjoy wine and craft beer tastings. Some display vibrant, eclectic art while some plazas paint their barricades, streets, planters and tables in more subdued colours. Will Dunbar’s community plaza bring out the gardeners, book lovers, artists and coffee drinkers? Will it have programming for children?
We hope that wherever you find yourselves this summer you enjoy the warm days and longer evenings.
Once again, thank you so much for supporting our local businesses.
JD’S BARBERSHOP: At Home in Dunbar
Storyby Sarah Gordon Photos submitted
Judah Down is the man behind the initials JD’s. He has provided top-notch haircuts, beard trims, hot shaves, and superior service for over twenty-seven years.
JD’s barbershop on Dunbar Street opened in May 2016. In addition, Judah owns two other Vancouver locations, one in Gastown and an exclusive members-only two-chair shop at The Vancouver Club. An additional shop opened temporarily in Los Angeles, but Judah lost the location due to COVID-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions.
Operating a barbershop in a residential district is a departure from JD’s downtown locations. Still, it made sense when Judah learned about the availability of a nicely renovated storefront. With nearby high schools to draw from, in addition to numerous professionals and seniors in the area, and a fondness for the community, he says, “The decision was a no-brainer as the neighbourhood is an ideal fit.”
Originally from Niagara Falls, when Judah was in his early 20s, he went on an extended road trip with friends. One of the women needed her hair bleached, and he volunteered to give it a whirl. It turned out he had a knack for colouring, and a career was born.
Judah trained at Vidal Sassoon in Los Angeles. His talent evolved into a very successful career, first as a hair stylist (his first shop was the popular House of Envy in downtown Vancouver) and then as a master barber when he opened his first JD’s Barbershop in Gastown in 2002, followed by an invitation to open JD’s at The Vancouver Club in 2006.
Judah reports, “A lot has changed since I opened the Dunbar shop. My wife and I started a family and have two awesome boys under two. I try to spend as much free time as possible with my sons, hanging out at the park, beach, or wherever my toddler wants. It’s the best job in the world.”
Coast artist Ben Tour complements the space. Judah mentions plans to add artistic flair to the neighbourhood with a mural on the store’s alley wall.
The shop’s interior is very clean and minimalistic. Big plate glass windows sport JD’s logo. A red and white striped awning is a nod to the traditional barbershop pole. Four chairs are in place, with the option to add two more.
A striking five-by-10-foot commissioned graffiti-style art installation by Sunshine
Colour and hair washing services are not available; however, the stylists will happily cut both men’s and women’s hair of all lengths, in addition to beard trims and shaves. The barbershop has an in-house apprenticeship program to ensure stylists receive the proper training.
“The Dunbar community has embraced JD’s, and we’ve become a staple to the neighbourhood; we love the mellow family vibe.”
JD’s has earned a reputation for great stylists and terrific haircuts.
What cuts are in style? Judah comments, “Fades are still our most popular cuts, but I’ve been seeing a lot more mullets these days. The 80s never die!”
In 2016, JD’s launched a line of products which has been very successful. The line includes body wash, shave cream, after-shave, grooming cream and matte pomade. The most recent addition to the collection is a clay pomade which provides the heaviest hold and is JD’s top seller. The products are made locally by a chemist in East Vancouver. Quality ingredients are locally sourced as much as possible and feature essential oils and vitamin E.
If you have trouble finding gifts for men,
“I attribute our success to our great clientele and my talented team, who pump out amazing cuts. I love hearing from multiple clients around the city about how happy they are with their cuts and how they’ve built great relationships with their barbers. These are very special connections that take years to build. Most of our clients are from the neighbourhood and are now our friends; it’s like one big family up here!” says Judah.

JD’s booking app is available in the app store and is the easiest and most convenient way to book and manage appointments. Judah recommends downloading it and stopping by for a haircut. Gift cards are available for purchase as well.
Judah promises, “A relaxed environment where guys and gals can feel comfortable letting us help them look their best.”
JD’s attractive dopp bags come in two sizes and make excellent Father’s Day, birthday or holiday gifts.
Real estate agents are paid negotiators and it is critical that you have a professional who is trustworthy and trained to get the most value from a real estate transaction. The benefits of a Professional Real Estate Negotiator include:
BETTER CHANCE OF A FAVOURABLE OUTCOME - An unskilled negotiator argues positions which lead to a win/ lose or a lose/lose outcome. A skilled negotiator trades interests to create a win/win outcome.
SKILLED AT MANAGING EMOTIONS - Emotions influence behaviour. Emotional negotiations result in a weaker approach, quicker reactions, and an early exit. Third-party negotiators reveal less emotion in stressful environments. Their approach is careful and deliberate, and they strike the best deals.
STRATEGIC - Professional negotiators focus on identifying alternatives, using leverage, and executing the process strategically. They create value and are more successful because their skills are better honed, and the process is routine for them.
As a Professional Real Estate Negotiator, I offer expertise and discretion, and I assist my clients to achieve better outcomes in every real estate transaction.
NEW DISTRICT:
Dunbar’s Destination for Wine, Beer, and Spirits
Story by Sarah Gordon Photos submitted and by Carolynne PallaNew District opened its door seven years ago at the south end of Dunbar Street near West 41st Avenue. The business began as a specialty wine shop and has evolved over the years into a full-service liquor store with an amazing selection of wine.
InnHouse Group of Companies purchased New District in 2019. InnHouse’s general manager, Gaven McKenney, comments, “New District’s past reputation focused on rare and unique wines. Although this is still
true, in the past few years, we have shifted gears to offer everything our customers are looking for, from Asian spirits to the best local distilleries and craft breweries. We carry all your favourites.”
“Our vision is to be the best private liquor store
“We are passionately focused on quality and craft products, value, exceptional service, and sustainability,” says Gaven.
The interior of the store is beautiful and takes advantage of the shop’s high ceilings. Wine and spirits are displayed on tall custom shelves, industrial glass pendant lights hang from the ceiling, and richcoloured wood flooring brings to mind wine barrels. Recent renovations created more shelving for the ever-growing demand for products.
on Vancouver’s westside.”
The store stocks over a thousand wines and hundreds of beers and spirits. The friendly and knowledgeable staff can assist you, whether you are looking for a hard-to-find limited-release IPA or the funky natural wine you had at your favourite restaurant. Gaven says, “We probably have it, or we can get it for you.”
Gaven adds, “New District carries many selections you can’t find elsewhere. We also offer many regularly listed products at very competitive prices.”
Top sellers include New Zealand sauvignon blancs, Italian pinot grigios and rosés from numerous countries. Wines from Bordeaux, New World cabernet sauvignons, pinot noirs and California chardonnays are always popular picks. Gaven notes that sparkling wines and Prosecco are gaining in popularity.
“Special orders are always welcome. Whether it’s a backyard get-together or a 1,000-person wedding, our experts are ready to personally curate all our customers’ needs from start to finish. Our goal is to present the guest with a
flawless and unique order, including the best possible savings,” says Gaven.
Store manager Cécile Chabirand brings a sharp palate and wealth of experience to her role. She grew up in the famed wine region of Bordeaux, France and came by her love of wine naturally.
After earning a master’s degree in Agronomy, she interned at her family’s Domaine de Baumard. Cécile enjoyed a foreign wine-making experience as a cellar hand in Marlborough, New Zealand, at a huge cooperative winery which produces several different labels. Her final internship was with Andre Lurton at Château de Rochemorin in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux.
New District offers the best wines for the money from around the globe. Wines are sourced from smaller producers; many are made with organic, biodynamic, and natural practices, with a specific focus on female winemakers and owners.
“We have an incredible selection of B.C. wines ranging from very small to larger, more recognizable vineyards. We like to support our province.”
New District’s staff have a vast knowledge of the store’s products. They are always available to answer questions and support requests to improve your experience. Assistant manager Gord is a world traveller who can point you in the right direction for whatever occasion or your preference.
Online orders can be placed through New District’s website, with an option for pick up in-store or delivery. In addition, a new app highlights everything you will find in-store and features drink recipes, savings, and other perks.
Summer is a time to relax, gather with friends and family and dine outdoors. When looking for a refreshing, chilled beverage, head to New District’s cooler, where you will find an impressive variety of single cans of chilled local craft and domestic beer, cider, coolers, and white wine.
New District is open 365 days a year from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Pruning Tips for Your Flowering Evergreen Shrubs
My neighbour asked me a couple of years ago what he was doing wrong with his Rhododendron and Camellia shrubs. They never seemed to produce flowers, and his wife was disappointed. I asked when he was pruning the shrubs, and his answer was in the autumn. I had to be the bearer of bad news and let him know he had been cutting off all the flowering buds simply by pruning at the wrong time. Now my neighbour prunes in the late spring, immediately after the evergreen shrubs have finished flowering. As a result, he gets to control the shape and size of his plants and his wife gets to enjoy the blooms every spring.
Shrubs to prune in May or June, once blooms are finished:
• Rhododendron
• Camellia
• Heather, simply give a light trim to remove old flower heads
• Spring flowering Clematis, shear once they have flowered
• Lilac, most important is to deadhead spent blossoms
• Flowering Quince, pruning after flowering forms short flower bearing spurs
Tip of the Month – Fertilizing Wisteria
One of our customers told us a story about his Wisteria after having fertilized it with a combination fertilizer containing Nitrogen. The Nitrogen caused the Wisteria to only produce green foliage, no flowers. They learned the hard way that to get flowers, a Phosphorous fertilizer should have been used instead.
Pruning can also be used to encourage your Wisteria’s flower production. Prune the new growth in summer back to six inches every two weeks to stimulate lateral branches that will become flowering spurs next year.
