Hello, summer! Sunshine and warm days have a way of making people relax. Take the time to savour this much anticipated season. Consider leaving your car behind and explore Dunbar Street on foot or by bike, and stop to enjoy a beverage or meal at one of our local cafes.

Our cover story features Pink Elephant Cafe and Urban Thai Bistro. Now open for three years, it’s the perfect place to kickstart your day with freshly roasted coffee and a pastry, grab a meal to go or enjoy a sit-down meal with the flavorful tastes of Thailand.

In this edition, we profile Pourya Eslami, the new owner of YNP Dunbar Pharmacy. In addition to being a skilled pharmacist, Pourya has a natural ability to listen attentively and takes pride in going the extra mile for his customers. He invites you to drop in and introduce yourself.

We welcome new businesses to central Dunbar Village: Bynns, now open in the former Starbucks location, offers sandwiches, coffee, and refreshers. Prado Cafe opened at the corner of West 28th Avenue, serving hot and cold beverages, baked goods, and casual lunch options. We are also excited that Vancouver Pizza Heaven is opening at 4495 Dunbar St.

In the south of Dunbar at West 39th, Bread Culture Artisan Bakery is preparing to open. We look forward to welcoming their immediate and future new neighbours, Blooming Dental and Hillhouse Education.

We hope you have been enjoying the new summer banners and beautiful hanging baskets brought to you by the DVBA Board. The Board decided to add another set of banners to the annual cycle to extend the life of Dunbar’s spring banners. You might recognize this popular design from a handful of years ago when Dunbar Life’s readers voted for their favourite banner! Thank you to the DVBA Board, which always works hard to bring beauty to Dunbar Village.

On that note, you might recall the plans to rearrange and add new benches and some chairs to the streets of Dunbar. This project was to be completed by now; however, the City ran into an issue with the supplier, and things have been on hold for quite some time. A work-around plan is in place, and I hope we can report soon that these new benches have been installed. All benches and chairs will be covered under contract by the City of Vancouver for upkeep and repairs. If a problem is noted on one of the chairs or benches, please report it using the Van311 app for fastest service. This user-friendly app connects you with City services and provides updates on the status of your request. It is the fastest way to report issues and request services, and we’d like to encourage you to use it when you come across a City issue anywhere in Dunbar.

We want to take the time to repeat our recent update on the plans for Dunbar’s neighbourhood plaza. There is considerable enthusiasm from Dunbar businesses and residents for a neighbourhood plaza. However, the DVBA and the City have agreed to postpone the installation of Dunbar’s plaza on West 27th Avenue (on the east side of Dunbar). Over the next three years, the City will be conducting considerable sewer and water infrastructure upgrades in the area. In 2024, most of this construction is planned for West 26th, 27th and 28th Avenues. The DVBA wants to ensure that vehicles and bikes can safely reroute on adjacent streets while this construction is underway. We are disappointed that Dunbar’s plaza cannot go ahead at this time, but we look forward to speaking to more of you about the opportunities for businesses and residents that Dunbar’s plaza will bring in 2025 or 2026 once the local street network is restored and available for regular use.

PINK ELEPHANT CAFE & URBAN THAI BISTRO: A Taste of Thailand on Dunbar Street

Whether you are looking to kick start your day with a freshly roasted coffee and pastry, drop in for a meal to go, or wish to have a sit-down meal to explore the flavourful tastes of Thailand, Pink Elephant Cafe and Urban Thai Bistro are restaurants to check out.

Three years ago, restaurant owner Desmond Chen made the astute decision to open Pink Elephant and Urban Thai Bistro when he saw potential in the rapidly changing south end of Dunbar Street. He knew there was a restaurant shortage in the area and introduced Thai cuisine to the neighbourhood. A former restaurant was converted into two spaces with a shared kitchen.

Pink Elephant Cafe is a cheerful space with blush pink and grey décor. It is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is a great spot to catch up with friends over a coffee.

The cafe is known for its memorable java, smoothies, baked goods (including cookies, croissants, muffins, sausage rolls), desserts, soups, and salads. Mango sticky rice is a top choice when it is in season, as is the deepfried banana with ice cream.

During the summer, a variety of tempting iced drinks are added to the menu.

Kids love the iced strawberry milk. Thai iced tea, iced strawberry matcha, and iced chocolate are also among the top sellers.

The popular morning combo features coffee and a croissant or a sausage roll for $6.50.

Desmond mentions, “We have a large loyal customer base from neighbouring businesses, residents, and UBC students who frequently have their morning coffee before work and then return for lunch at Urban Thai Bistro the very same day. We also have customers who come for coffee in the morning and return to pick up takeout dinner after work.”

He adds, “It was difficult to operate during the pandemic, yet through the community’s strong support, we managed to survive and build the business even stronger by attracting more new regular customers from the Kerrisdale neighbourhood to UBC students making the 15-minute commute by bus.”

Urban Thai Bistro’s décor fuses traditional Thai with modern, resulting in an exotic interior with teal walls and punches of gold and black. It is a cozy spot to gather with

family and friends for a meal and drinks.

Urban Thai Bistro offers a selection of traditional authentic Thai dishes along with their signature creations.

“Variety is the spice of life, and Urban Thai Bistro offers plenty of variety.”

The restaurant’s signature dishes include three-flavoured black cod, jumbo-size tiger prawns in a garlic sauce, and Matsaman curry rack of lamb, which Desmond says is sensational. Other popular picks include Pad Thai and appetizers such as prawn ceviche, pork cheeks and Thai chicken wings. Salads include Som Tom papaya, Thai prawn salad, and mango salad. Duck noodle soup made with a house-made broth will warm you up on cool-weather days, as will the flavourful Thai curries.

“Urban Thai’s Pad Thai is prepared authentically with fresh tamarind sauce. Our curries are made from scratch every morning.”

Desmond mentions, “We’ve added party

platters to accommodate birthday parties and other celebrations for larger groups, making it easier for the hosts!”

Urban Thai is open for lunch, dinner, takeout, or delivery.

The bistro doubles as a wine bar, offering many Asian-inspired cocktails and martinis.

Both restaurants offer takeout and delivery options through Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Skip the Dishes. They also have an online ordering app available at the Apple and Android stores.

YNP DUNBAR PHARMACY: Your Neighbourhood Health Hub

Pourya Eslami is the new owner of YNP Dunbar Pharmacy. In addition to being a skilled pharmacist, Pourya has a natural ability to listen attentively and takes pride in going the extra mile for his customers.

Pourya faced some health challenges growing up. He says, “I got a spark from my healthcare providers when I was younger; it was surprising how a simple smile would change and spark my day when I received my prescription or had my health assessed. I learnt from them, and in turn, I like to give my patients the same spark along with their medications or assessments.”

After working in Victoria as a pharmacy manager for two years, he realized he was ready for a new challenge. He began to explore purchasing a pharmacy to introduce a new element to his career. With a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from UBC and a business

and management studies degree, combining his two passions made sense.

“My parents are my inspirations. Both are healthcare professionals,” says Pourya. His father is a retired radiologist, and his mother is a Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science. He mentions having many long conversations with his dad to help make the decision to purchase a business.

He heard YNP Dunbar Pharmacy was for sale and bought the established independent business this past April.

A transfer period took place with former owners Norm Cheng and Mathew Chong. Pourya is highly grateful to them for taking

the time to introduce him to clients. He is committed to continuing YNP’s excellent reputation and making sure patients get their medications and get them on time.

Pourya says, “The people make this neighbourhood unique. It’s such a special place. Dunbar’s residents are very friendly. Everyone has been so awesome introducing me to the community.”

In 2023, pharmacists’ roles changed with an expanded scope of practice. Some of the 21 conditions pharmacists can now prescribe medication for include acne, pink eye, dermatitis, allergies, fungal infections, cold sores, stomach upset (GERD), shingles, smoking cessation, and urinary tract infections. In addition, pharmacists can manage and refill certain prescriptions until a patient can see their doctor.

The pharmacy is also home to Dr. Scudamore's rejuvenation clinic, which provides a variety of personalized aesthetic medical care.

“I like to take the time to talk to people, which is why I went into healthcare.”

In the short time Pourya has owned YNP Dunbar Pharmacy, he has built client relationships. He points out this makes small businesses unique, and he enjoys it very much.

The Government of B.C. sent out invitations in April for spring COVID-19 vaccinations. He recommends getting the COVID-19 vaccination every six months and advises his patients about the merits of continuing to get vaccinated.

“The virus is still around, and it can mutate. After six to 12 months, bodies can become less resilient to the virus. As we have learnt, the COVID-19 vaccination doesn’t prevent people from getting COVID, but the effects will be less serious, and it helps you fight it.”

This same logic applies to the annual fall flu vaccination, as there are always new strains of the flu virus.

The shingles vaccine is another essential vaccination for those 50 and older. One intramuscular injection of the shingles vaccine may help protect you from this potentially painful skin rash.

In collaboration with Avee Telemedicine, YNP Dunbar Pharmacy provides same-day, virtual doctor appointments for urgent medical needs.

“YNP Dunbar Pharmacy is a health hub for the community. I take time to explain prescriptions thoroughly and to answer any questions my patients have.”

In-store compounding and blister packing are offered at no extra charge to help simplify things for clients taking multiple medications. The pharmacy sells vitamins and other health products, flight and medical compression stockings, supports, and orthoses; they are authorized and trained to provide custom-fit service and sales of the Bauerfeind line.

“Life has taken me to many unexpected places on this earth to meet people from all walks of life. I’ve learned from their stories and experiences while living mine to become the person I am today. This pharmacy is another milestone in my life where I get to grow further while giving back to the community that contributes to this growth. I am glad it happened to be the Dunbar community that does this."
