When do I need to prime a wall before I paint?

Primers are designed to help cover the existing surface and to help create better adhesion. Benjamin Moore paints all have a self-priming element, so most previously painted, undamaged walls do not require a primer, especially when using our highest quality paint.

However, some instances where primers can be helpful are for:

1. When painting over a non-porous or glossy surface such as tile, metal, or panelling.

2. Colour changes, when going from dark to light, or vice versa.

3. To block stains such as smoke, water, or other odours.

4. When painting over porous surfaces like drywall or wood, to create uniformity when painting, and so the primer gets soaked up rather than the paint.

At West Side Paint & Decorating we are a proudly locally owned store, eager to help you with any other painting questions you may have.
