We are excited to help celebrate Magee Secondary School’s 100th birthday in May. Over the past four years the Magee Centennial Celebration committee has been hard at work organizing this big party. Dal Richards, who graduated from Magee in 1936, is the Honorary Chair for this event. My writer Sarah Gordon has been begging to write his story for years and finally the opportunity presented itself. We are thrilled to recognize his huge contribution to the Vancouver music scene as Canada’s ‘King of Swing.’
Whether you are training for a marathon, revving up to work in the garden, or just looking forward to longer days, I wish you a productive and happy spring – it won’t be long now!

Dal Richards:
Vancouver’s Music Man by Sarah Gordon
photos submitted
I confess I have a soft spot for Dal Richards, Canada’s “King of Swing.” He is charming, witty and sharp as a tack. His irrepressible grin is magnetic, not to mention his strong and confident voice, and the way he recounts incredible stories makes you realize you are in the presence of a star.
Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger, and be responsible for giving young Michael Bublé his first break on the road to international stardom? Not many have received the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia, have been inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, and carried the Olympic torch as it arrived in Vancouver in 2010.
How many people can say they have met, to name only a few, Tony Bennett, Bing Crosby, David Foster, Benny Goodman, Lena Horne, Howard Hughes, Diana Krall, Ginger Rogers,
This year, two days after his 96th birthday, Dal and his wife Muriel Richards met me for lunch to discuss his amazing career as the leader of the Dal Richards Orchestra which is still swinging along with as many as 60 gigs a year. This Vancouver legend leads his orchestra of talented musicians in a blend of unique sounds that capture the best of the big band era, along with jazz, rock and pop standards from the 1930s to today. Baby Dallas Murray Richards was named after Dr. Dallas Perry, who delivered him at Vancouver General Hospital on January 5, 1918. Dal grins when he says, “He must have had some bedside manner.”

from across the Lower Mainland to play at the 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago, where they would compete against the very best school bands in the USA, and most importantly, his objective was to win. During Dal’s visit to Chicago he was exposed to some of the greatest big bands in America. He and fellow band member Jack Bensted would slip away to ballrooms and with a woeful look convinced head waiters that they were a couple of boys from Vancouver in town for a band competition, and would like to listen to the band for awhile. It usually worked. As for the Kitsilano Boys Band, Delamont’s high hopes for the band proved correct, the band from Vancouver beat them all. This led to a trip to England in 1934 for the Kitsilano Boys Band where Dal and Bensted once again took the opportunity to listen to as many big bands a possible, again with a tug of the head waiter’s sleeve accompanied by the mastered woeful look.
He grew up in Marpole, and can rattle off addresses and dates at the drop of a hat. If not for a slingshot his incredible musical career (which has spanned eight decades) may never have transpired. Nine-year-old Dal was on his way home from David Lloyd George Elementary with a group of friends who were all playing with slingshots. As he raced along the sidewalk he tripped, with his slingshot in hand. One prong pierced his left eye, which he later lost. The treatment in those days involved being kept in a dark room for days on end to let the good eye adjust. During this time young Dal slumped into a depression, however, his wise doctor suggested that perhaps Dal’s parents consider channelling his energy into music lessons, and before long he was playing his first instrument, the clarinet. This opened the door to Dal’s keen interest in music. His first memory of Kerrisdale “being a desirable place to go” was when he would take the Interurban to watch Saturday matinees at the movie theatre formerly located at West Boulevard and W. 41st Avenue. Dal recollects admission being a dime. He smiles when he mentions the Douglas Fairbanks cliffhanger endings that kept him coming back for more. By age 15 Dal’s musical proficiency was of such a high calibre that he auditioned for the renowned Kitsilano Boys Band organized by bandleader Arthur Delmont. This new venture was not limited to students from Kitsilano High School. Delmont’s mission was to select the best young musicians February 15 - April 14, 2014

Dal attended Magee High School and graduated in May 1936. He is flattered to be the Honorary Chair for the upcoming May 2014 Magee Centennial Celebrations. When approached for this role several years ago Dal asked when the event would be held, and in his delightful manner of poking fun at his age said, “May of 2014! Do you know who you are talking to?”
and performed gigs whenever and wherever possible, sometimes running back and forth between venues. Dal is a living encyclopedia of Vancouver history and the music scene from the 1930s on. His fascinating stories make you long to have been a part of the big band era, or if you were along for the ride, his recollections sweep you right back to the glory days. In 2009 Dal penned his memoir One More Time! The Dal Richards Story with the assistance of Jim Taylor, where he recounts many gems in his unique style.
In Grade 11 he formed an eight-piece-band at Magee. They played school dances and local golf clubs. Dal remembers playing a grad dance at Prince of Wales High School, which planted a seed to perform at his own school. When he approached the school principal with the idea he was told it would “create unrest” amongst the student population. That is how exciting big band music was, to cause this level of concern, and parallels a similar musical ‘unrest’ amongst youth years later with the surge of rock and roll.
By 1941 Dal was leading his band at Vancouver’s most popular dinner dance venue, the Panorama Roof at the Hotel Vancouver. The Roof and the band became the centre of Vancouver’s social scene for more than 25 years and brought a taste of Vancouver nightlife to Canadians across the country via live CBC broadcasts on Saturday nights. Dal recalls his phone started ringing and “instead of scrounging for jobs, I was getting offers.”
Dal has always had an “unquenchable thirst for show biz” and leaves no stone unturned. Along with his orchestra, he paid his dues 10

During his years working at The Roof Dal lived in Kerrisdale. He remembers the late nights returning home when he would take his family’s huge German shepherd named Kazan out for a walk. Together they would go up to a deserted West Boulevard with a hard rubber ball which Dal would throw down the street and the pair would run after it together. What an image. In the 1960s the musical barometer suddenly shifted with Elvis Presley and The Beatles sweeping the charts. There was no longer enough work for a clarinet and saxophone player to support his wife (well known singer Lorraine McAllister who passed away in 1984) and daughter (Dallas Richards Chapple). Always one to think on his feet, and a master of re-invention, in 1966 Dal enrolled in BCIT’s hotel management two-year program. He laughs and says that other students thought this mature fellow (age 50) was their instructor. He tips his hat to two BCIT instructors who went out of their way to help keep his music business alive. One let Dal use his office to make phone calls to arrange his gigs, and another coached him privately to help him get through the challenging mathematics and statistics section of the course. Remarkably Dal continued to juggle performances when
they came his way. He received a diploma, followed by a successful fifteen-year career in the hotel industry. In the 1980s big band swing music regained popularity. Dal brought back his Orchestra, and the band has never been busier. This year he has a number of concerts already confirmed. The year started with his 78th consecutive New Year’s Eve performance (held at the River Rock Casino for the past nine years). Other confirmed dates for 2014 include the Magee Centennial concert, the UBC Opera Ball at Chan Centre (he loves this event), a Canada Day concert; daily shows at the PNE (where he is known as “Mr. PNE” for his 75 years of involvement with the Fair), and a Remembrance Day performance at The ACT arts centre in Maple Ridge. Dal is also available to lend his unique and memorable music to many other events from concerts to corporate receptions, weddings, dinners, and backyard barbecues. Whether you’re looking for a jazz trio, a swinging sevenpiece dance band or a 16-piece orchestra, Dal has the music and the musicians to make an event memorable. He practices every day, and says he can see a difference if he takes a day or two off. He

plays tenor saxophone (he formerly played alto sax as well) and he sings. He reveals one of the secrets to his longevity is playing an instrument. He states, “Retirement is not an option and besides, it would fly in the face of medical advice” as Dal’s doctor has advised him, “Don’t stop blowing your horn, Dal. You may drop dead.” Dal explains not only does his music help him stay young, but also blowing the horn is good for his lungs and his diaphragm. It also doesn’t hurt that Dal is classified as a “super senior” based on his amazing health, which is partly genetic. His organs don’t seem to be ageing at a normal rate. He walks one mile a day, rain or shine. Another secret of Dal’s is continuing to do what he loves. He feels privileged to be a working musician and lives by his motto “Don’t stop doing what you love.” Speaking of love, he clearly loves Muriel, who plays an active role in his career. They married in 2001 and as Dal says, “she keeps me tap dancing.”
In his down time Dal likes to read entertainment biographies and any book about the history of big bands. He is currently reading books about Tony Bennett, Johnny Carson, and Debbie Reynolds – all Christmas presents. His favourite singer is Frank Sinatra. He says Benny Goodman was a “trail blazer on the clarinet” although Dal became fonder of Artie Shaw’s music, which he describes as, “More inventive. There was more soul to his playing.” Dal points out that Shaw had humble beginnings but made up for it by having six wives. I asked Dal to share some words of wisdom. He mentioned one of his greatest life lessons was learnt early on in his career. Upon completion of an Orpheum show young Dal (age 22) was fishing for a compliment from theatre manager, Ivan Akery who informed him, “It was a good show but…you forgot the balcony…you never once directed any part of your attention to the people up there. Never forget the balcony.” Dal says he didn’t, never again. In fact he has applied this concept of ‘looking beyond what is in front of him’ to other areas of his life such as paying attention when people speak. Considering the feelings of your family and appreciating the love they have for you. Don’t get so wrapped up in yourself that you don’t notice. Don’t forget the balcony. Don’t miss the chance to see Dal Richards perform during the Magee Centennial Celebration on Saturday May 24th. Dal always takes time to talk to his fans, and he is very likely to give you one of his warm and genuine Dal Richards smiles. www.dalrichards.com

Magee Prepares For Centennial Celebration by Sarah Gordon photos submitted
King George V (Magee) High School, about 1921, before the east wing was added. (VPL-9368)
Magee Secondary School, the grand dame of Kerrisdale high schools, is set to stage a huge party in celebration of its 100th birthday. The Magee Centennial Celebration steering committee, under the chairmanship of John Tanton (class of ‘59) and Patrick Roberge (class of ’82), has been hard at work planning this party for the past four years. Dal Richards, Vancouver’s legendary musician, is one of the school’s most distinguished graduates (class of ’36) and has been appointed as Honorary Chair for this milestone event.
the construction of a new building at W. 49th Avenue and Maple Street. During the school’s official opening ceremony at the outbreak of the First World War, the name changed to King George V High School to honour the ruling British monarch. Residents and students persisted in referring to the school as “Magee” in recognition of Hugh Magee, a pioneer who had farmed in Southlands. The school’s name officially changed in 1926. Magee closed in 1918 to serve as a temporary hospital during the flu pandemic. At the end of the crisis the student population grew to 183 students and the first large wing was
Historian John Macdonald and his wife Brenda have conducted extensive research into the high school’s rich history and kindly shared their findings. Brenda Macdonald is in fact the great-great granddaughter of Hugh Magee, in whose honour the school was named. Magee was the first high school in the area. It began as Point Grey High School in a single classroom in Marpole. In the fall of 1913 the students moved to the current location during 18

Paralympic Winter Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies; and numerous Grey Cup Half-Time shows including the 2012 100th Anniversary Grey Cup celebration.
Demolition of the 85-year-old building began in 1997 to construct the contemporary 21st century facility. As the footprint for the new school was on the existing site the construction had to be completed in two phases. The new Magee Secondary was officially opened on October 6th, 2000.
Bill Harvey (class of ’59) is the co-chair of the Kerrisdale Events committee for Magee’s Centennial Celebration. He promises a “wow factor” at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Surprises await as the organizing committee has elected to keep the show’s content top secret however, with Patrick Roberge at the helm it is sure to be a spectacular evening.
Festivities in celebration of Magee’s centennial take place on a grand scale the weekend of May 23 and 24, 2014. The Centennial organizing committee advises, “Hang on to your hats. Friday night will be memorable and filled with much excitement.” The Queen Elizabeth Theatre is the venue set to host the show “Success and Excellence,” to be directed by Magee graduate Patrick Roberge. He is the Creative Director of PRP Inc., an internationally recognized producer of live entertainment and spectacular events with an impressive list of credentials. Some of the companies high profile events include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Jubilee visit to Vancouver; the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Emblem and Mascot launches; the 2007 and 2011 Canada Winter Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies; the 2010 February 15 - April 14, 2014

Harvey advises alumni to set aside the May 23rd weekend to join the celebrations. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and spend time with those who have been by your side since the glory days of high school.
Merchants and community organizations will provide warm welcomes at their establishments throughout the weekend. Both Magee alumni and the public are invited to visit Magee Secondary on May 24th between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A variety of activities are planned including tours of the new school, performances, decade rooms, memorabilia, a photo booth, and food and refreshments.
There will be dancing in the streets May 24th as Kerrisdale village welcomes three bands featuring Magee alumni. The stage will be located on Yew Street between W. 40th and W. 41st Avenues.
The organizing committee is currently selling passports which provide registrants with admission to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre show and no host reception, the pancake breakfast, the beer garden, and a souvenir copy of the soon to be published Magee Centennial Celebration hard cover book.
Colin Holyk (class of ’83 and pharmacist/ owner of Kerrisdale Pharmacy) and his band Line 49 will perform, in addition to Tom MacLachlan’s (class of ‘70) band, aptly named, Class of ’70, and the crowning glory, Dal Richards Swing Band, will take to the stage. In addition, the PALS Chorus (Vancouver’s “hippest non-auditioned chorus” comprised of singers ages 55+) will perform songs from yesteryear as well as a range of eclectic repertoire, which may include artists from Lady Gaga to Adele. PALS Chorus was cofounded in 2010 by Bill Harvey and Jane Heyman (class of ‘61), and Harvey is actively involved as president of the chorus and as a bass singer.
When this weekend of celebration has concluded there are bound to be many people singing, “Wasn’t that a Party.”
Street entertainment and other events are also being planned. Courtesy of the Kerrisdale Business Association, West 41st Avenue will be adorned with Magee Centennial Celebration banners.

A LITTLE SPRING IN YOUR STEP by Michelle Addison
photos by Sandra Steier
This spring it’s all about shoes. Ankle boots, flats, metallic sandals, cut-out heels and street sneakers are among the hottest shoes this season. I took a walk down W. 41st Avenue and came across Town Shoes (formerly Freedman Shoes) where I fell in love with some great new shoes to covet for my wardrobe… I mean suggest for my clients.
The Ankle Boot This is my favourite shoe for many reasons. They go so well with a slim or skinny jean (skinny jeans are my uniform), they are surprisingly comfortable and if you have been wearing knee high boots for the last few months this is a fantastic option to refresh your wardrobe. The Kenneth Cole ankle boot retails for $145.
Metallic Sandals Metallic accessories and shoes may just be the must-have items this season. By now you probably have brown flat sandals and perhaps a black pair too… but do you have metallic sandals in your wardrobe yet? I like the tone-ontone look with a dash of metallic. Tip: Wear all white, add a metallic belt, Michael Kors sandals and volià, you will look like a goddess! Retails at $130.
The Pointy-Toe Flat This past fall style setters moved away from the rounded toe ballet flat and the pointy-toed shoe made its grand entrance. From the rock-studded Valentino flats to Jimmy Choo patent flats, these shoes are having their moment in the spotlight. I found these flats by Town Shoes (their in-house brand) for $125. They’re a great shoe to celebrate the warmer weather. 28

The Cut-Out Heel The cut-out heel is great to wear with skirts and dresses, and is especially chic with all the bohoesque fashions that are trending. When wearing cut-outs with pants, opt for cropped pants to show off the ankle strap. The block heel is also great for comfort and this would be an easy heel to wear to work. These heels are Steven Madden, a brand known for making high-end styles affordable. Retails at $125.
Street Sneaker I like to call this the “mom sneaker” and I put it on almost every mom’s shopping list. From Converse to Prada they may all be slightly different, but they all do the same thing: they help you avoid looking frumpy at the park. There’s nothing worse than bad mom shoes! I recommend getting a pair of cool, comfortable sneakers like these made by Superga ($69.95). They are great for spring and they come in a variety of colors. Even if you are not a mom you should consider buying these cool sneakers.
