Andrew Wilkinson: Multitalented Cabinet Minister at Home in Kerrisdale photo by Sandra Steier So what makes a downtown lawyer give up a career in law to seek elected office in the provincial government? For Andrew Wilkinson, the path to elected office started with two professional qualifications, followed by five years in the public service as a Deputy Minister. When long time Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Colin Hansen decided to step down after 17 years, Wilkinson decided it was time to put his name forward for the 2013 provincial election. In Wilkinson’s words, “I have always been interested in public service – some people participate through non-profits, charitable causes or community organizations, but I decided to jump in with both feet and leave the professions to take an elected role.” Wilkinson was born in Australia, came to Canada at the age of four, and grew up in Kamloops. After his family moved to Alberta, he graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in medicine, and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship at the University of Oxford in 1980. He studied law at Oxford, and completed a Canadian L.L.B. at Dalhousie University in 1987. He was called to the British Columbia bar a year later. In between all of this, he worked as a doctor in a number of communities around B.C., including Campbell River, Lillooet and Dease Lake. During his time as a Deputy Minister, Wilkinson worked in economic development, where he had responsibility for economic issues, trade and tourism. He also served as Deputy Minister for Intergovernmental Relations in the Premier’s Office for two years. Prior to being elected, Wilkinson worked as a partner in the Vancouver offices of a major national law firm where he had a special interest in green renewable energy development. June 15 - August 31

Shortly after his election as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for VancouverQuilchena, Wilkinson was appointed as a cabinet minister by Premier Christy Clark. As Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services, Wilkinson oversees a broad portfolio including provincial data holdings, information systems and the technology sector. The mandate of the Ministry includes encouraging growth in the technology sector through the B.C. Innovation Council, and topics as diverse as helping provide telecommunications services to rural and remote areas, and overseeing procurement for government. When asked what he wants to get done in government, Wilkinson replies, “My goal is to continue the sound approach to public services and fiscal responsibility that the Christy Clark Liberals have pursued. Our province is looking forward to exciting times in technology, LNG and the broader economy, and we all want to see that prosperity benefit our children.” In addition to his work in medicine, law, government, and politics, Wilkinson is also past-President of the Vancouver Institute, spent five years co-chairing the Arts Umbrella annual fundraising campaign, and has served on the boards of the Canadian Tourism Commission, Tourism B.C., and the Federation of B.C. Mountain Clubs. He has also served as president of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, president of the B.C. Mountaineering Club, and president of the B.C. Liberal Party. He and his wife have three children. In Kerrisdale and within the local community, Wilkinson enjoys time with his family running, cycling, skiing and kayaking. photos by Sandra Steier David Kariotakis points out, is coming full circle as the commercial food industry has only been around for about 100 years and prior to its existence this was the way pets were fed.
True Carnivores on West Boulevard feels like the “Cheers” of the pet world. Inside this busy shop both customers and their pet companions are greeted by name and with a warm welcome. The day I visited the shop it was a beehive (or should I say doghouse or cat bed?) of activity as clients entered through the front door as soon as the business opened, while simultaneously through the back door a number of deliveries were being received to restock the freezers.
Kariotakis bought the business four years ago from founder and mentor, Dakota Bawden-Tutte. She began the business after discovering the merits of feeding her dogs a raw diet. Her research found that a raw food diet leads to healthy pets that live longer lives and benefit from fresher breath and better teeth. Switching a pet’s diet can help control allergies and hot spot skin conditions.
This is a business with an extremely loyal customer base; in fact, one client drives in from White Rock on a weekly basis. True Carnivores’ clients have made the decision to feed their pets a raw diet, which, as owner
The enterprise began as a home-based business, starting with two freezers in her garage. With perseverance, and dodging some scepticism along the way, her business outgrew its space and Bawden-Tutte opened the Kerrisdale storefront in 1996. The business has grown exponentially in 18 years. Today 15 chest freezers, along with a number of glass upright freezers along the wall, are stocked with raw pet food. In addition, there is a large walk in freezer in the back room and additional storage off site.

Some commercial pet foods, kibble in particular, may contain little protein and high grain content. Kariotakis says that cats in particular, as obligate carnivores, benefit from eliminating grains (which are not part of their ancestral diet). He illustrates his case by going through the ingredient list of a popular pet food brand to show the percentage of protein versus grains and fillers. True Carnivores is proud to carry food products that are human quality or better. What does this mean? The meats are nonmedicated, hormone-free and have no preservatives. Freezers are stocked with smaller portions (good for cats) as well as larger carcasses and bones (as well as ground and chunk meat and organs). From the familiar (chicken, beef and fish) to the exotic (buffalo, elk, rabbit, emu, pheasant, ostrich, kangaroo), there is something to make every carnivore drool with delight. A true testimony to believing in the company’s philosophy, Kariotakis shopped at True Carnivores for a couple of years before he bought the business. He confesses he was initially out of his comfort zone without a bag of kibble in the store, however he quickly understood the health benefits, and has been feeding his own dogs and cats raw meat for six years.
All of the shop’s knowledgeable staff have pets and feed them a raw diet. Kariotakis is passionate about his business and educating people about the benefits of raw pet food. True Carnivores clients come from all walks of life and it is a destination store.
As a world traveller and animal lover, Kariotakis has seen many dogs and cats in their natural environments. He spent time in Central America where he would feed dogs in market squares, until he realized they were happy feeding and foraging independently. He witnessed the same pattern in China.

There is nothing more frustrating than reaching a call centre and being put into a loop only to find nobody can answer your question.
West Side Window Coverings & Design has been operating in Kerrisdale for 16 years. Linda Richardson, who is the owner and a certified interior designer, finds this fact a little hard to believe as the time has flown by quickly.

Three months into owning her new business a fire occurred, and she was immediately thrust into renovations. upholstery tacks to piping—there are many options to add a little style to the bedroom.
When I asked her about budgets she told me not to be shy of stepping inside the showroom to ask for a quote. She says the blind industry is a very competitive business and offers a variety of price points. As for drapes and roman shades, fabric choices dictate the price range. All drapes are custom made locally.
I was curious to know what is on-trend in the window-covering world. Richardson says roller shades are very much in fashion, as they provide simplistic and clean lines. Drapes are also experiencing a surge in popularity in all areas of the house including the living room, dining room and even in the kitchen (French doors for instance).
Richardson shares some of her design tips If you want to emphasize or make a window look larger, drapery that hangs past the window on a track or rod will work. You can de-emphasize a window by choosing a fabric that blends with the wall colour. Hanging draperies closer to the ceiling can visually make the ceiling appear to be higher. Richardson loves her career. She thoroughly enjoys interacting with clients, and is delighted when she is paid the highest compliment, having them return to update their homes, or send her referrals. As for her customers, they marvel at Richardson’s stylish flair and her ability to add the finishing touch to their home.
