Devan Wiebe: Runs Like the Wind by Sarah Gordon

Cover model Devan Wiebe has been on the run ever since her elementary school days. Wiebe works part-time at The Run Inn, you may have spotted her sporting fitness attire on their Facebook postings. She grew up in a very athletic household. Wiebe’s sister plays soccer, they both ride horses, her mother ran competitively when she was younger and still likes to run in Pacific Spirit Park. Her mother also practices hot yoga which Wiebe tried a couple of times and found very challenging. Wiebe is a third year commerce student at UBC’s Sauder School of Business where she is specializing in finance. She is the co-captain of the UBC women’s track and field team, which she has run on for the past two years, and has competed in many meets in Canada and the United States. In addition, Wiebe is a member of the Point Grey Track and Field Club.
Last year Wiebe participated in the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Her racing highlight took place when she ran the 800m where she placed 14th and ran a personal best of 2:05:40. As well, she was on the relay team that ran in the final and came sixth in the world. She says, “It was an amazing experience, especially to have the chance to compete with such talented athletes.” Wiebe is proud to have placed third two consecutive years in the 800m at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) track and field championships. When asked what she most enjoys about running Wiebe replies, “I love the feeling you gain from being your best and getting faster and faster; how it feels in a race when you know you have that extra gear to go for the win. I love how there are always goals you can work towards and the sense of pride you have when you achieve them.” She is inspired by how running creates a community of people who share a love of the sport. She also loves the diversity that running offers. “It can be so intense like when all you can think about is hitting a standard to qualify for a team – and then the next day I will be going for a chilled out run in the woods with my mom and my dog feeling like I don’t have a care in the world.” Reflecting back on running relay races around the gravel field of Lord Kitchener Elementary, Wiebe credits her mother for supporting her running, and enjoys being able to share a common sport with her. Pacific Spirit Park’s trails happen to be Wiebe’s favourite local run. As for other tips that she is willing to share, Wiebe encourages visiting The Run Inn. She is quick to point out that when it comes to gear, the most important thing is your shoes, and that means the fit and function – not the colour!

Dr. Frame grew up and went to medical school in South Africa. He moved to Canada to find a safe and peaceful place to raise his family. He worked in northern Manitoba

The store is outfitted with Nike displays, a company that The Run Inn is excited to be partnering with to promote the shop’s top selling line.

Founded in 1992, The Run Inn specializes in footwear and apparel with two locations to serve its customers, one in Kerrisdale and a second shop in Tsawwassen which opened in 1998. Owners Chris Cole, Steve Nobbs and Kevin Ridley have all been with the business since its inception. Cole works at the Kerrisdale shop; Nobbs splits his time between the two locations, while Ridley spends his time at the Tsawwassen store. The partners decided to shift The Run Inn to its new Kerrisdale location, feeling it was a better space to showcase Nike products, which happen to be the best selling running apparel brand in the fitness business. The new space is aesthetically pleasing with the use of contemporary neutral colours (white, black and gray), track lighting, and an impressive concrete wall showcasing a vast range of footwear. As a runner I was eager to learn about some of the bells and whistles to enhance a run. Smith pointed out the SPIbelt is a must have. This stretchable product straps on around the waist like a fanny pack, however this invention is fashionable, sleek, expandable, secure, does not bounce and can hold a smart phone, keys, money, ID, and even a passport.
In addition to the wall of shoes there is an array of clothing (primarily Nike with some Lija, Moving Comfort, Sugoi and Patagonia) and workout accessories. Staff member Tim Smith is extremely knowledgeable about all of the products and was kind enough to give me a complete tour of the shop. An assortment of sports watches, pedometers, GPS devices, and heart rate monitors will help you keep track of your performance and keep you shooting for your next personal best. Running socks are an essential part of one’s fitness gear. The shop offers Belega, Nike, and the Rolls Royce of socks, Thorlo, with padding which has been clinically shown to reduce blisters, foot pain, pressures and moisture. For those who need a little extra support, Superfeet insoles are sold.
The second item that caught my fancy was the Saucony USB LED light. The light is visible from over 300 feet and can be connected either to a key ring or a piece of clothing. This is a great rechargeable light for those who pound the pavements in the dark. If you enjoy listening to music while exercising, Yurbuds are designed to stay in place, they are sweat resistant, and allow ambient noise through so that you remain aware of your surroundings. The Run Inn believes in a strong community and is committed to giving back. The annual Run Inn The Woods fundraiser benefits the BC Cancer Foundation. Places I’ll Remember by Sarah Gordon The song “In My Life” by The Beatles is playing on the turntable inside my head.
“There are places I'll remember All my life though some have changed Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain“ My family and I recently went camping at Golden Ears Provincial Park. While the park was unknown territory to them, for me it was like prying open a time capsule. I have visited Golden Ears numerous times, however my fondest memories date back to when I was 13 years old. I was on the cusp of big changes as I was waving goodbye to a familiar routine and was setting off for high school in September. To bid summer farewell my brother and I were allowed to invite some school friends to join our family on a camping trip in mid-August. We spent a number of carefree days jumping off rocks into the clear jade green water of Gold Creek. One evening we abandoned our tents and lined up our sleeping bags in a row, resembling sardines in a tin can, where we fell asleep after watching a myriad of meteors race across the sky. Fast forward to the present. I was extremely eager to show my children and husband my childhood stomping ground that, as time has a way of doing, had reached mythical proportions in my head. While my family kindly supported me in this quest to retrace
my past they were very much grounded in the present, whereas I felt caught in the Twilight Zone. En route through the campground we encountered a park host who told us that the Gold Creek trail had fallen into a state of disrepair since I last ventured down it, and warned us that it would be an undertaking to reach our destination. Determined to find the swimming hole we set off, and when we finally located the trail it was true, the path was unrecognizable. Fortunately we spotted four young boys up ahead accompanied by a mother tagging behind in hot pursuit. Wishing that we had machetes to cut back the vegetation, combined with watching our footing closely due to abundant roots and loose rocks, we joined the parade. When we reached the creek the child in me watched with envy as the boys plunged off the high rocks into the glacial water, while at the same time my thoughts drifted to Acapulco cliff divers, and if necessary, just how quickly could we get medical assistance down the beaten up path that was out of cellular service range? After a few wonderful days spent floating on inner tubes in Alouette Lake, listening to night owls hoot, sitting around blazing campfires and overdosing on S’mores, we packed up and began our journey home. A craving for ice cream warranted a stop in historic Cloverdale, however we could not locate a store that fit the bill. We spotted an older gentleman who was staring pensively at a building and approached him to get advice. In a nostalgic fog he looked through us and said that he had lived here a long time ago but wouldn’t have a clue where to find anything anymore. I felt a sense of kinship with this fellow, having just emerged from “places I’ll remember all my life though some have changed.” To quote American author Thomas Wolfe “you can’t go home again” yet cherished memories that one can dredge up by revisiting past stomping grounds come a close second.

The fall runways were full of amazing fashion, from Philip Lim 3.1 to Proenza Schouler, it was evident that prints had taken precedent and leather details were everywhere. Part of my job as a stylist is to get to know my client’s lifestyle and find a personal style that works for them and their individual needs. From stay at home moms, to busy CEO’s, or artists with endless events, everyone wants a wardrobe that is easy, comfortable and stylish. I begin with wardrobe cleansing. I go through a wardrobe and see what works and what does not. Working alongside my client we eliminate items that are dated, too small, and never coming back in style. They try on pieces we like but may need changes, such as hemming, or perhaps we reinvent the piece

altogether. When we are finished, we start planning what we will need to update the wardrobe, build a shopping list, and then comes the fun part, we go shopping! I see so many lovely items that people really want to keep but sadly must go as they have seen their day. I also see plenty of great items that should definitely not be purged. Below are my top wardrobe items to lose, keep and add.
LOSE: Boot cut jeans Nothing screams dated more than a boot cut jean. Skinny jeans work for 99% of all people and will likely look better on you than boot cut.
Your boyfriend blazer with the sleeves rolled up It is time to let this go. I love Aritzia, but this blazer must have been a big seller because everyone has one. There are better blazers to roll the sleeves up on. Trust me.
Sweater tunics and leggings I will admit that there could be exceptions to this rule, while this look was cool once, it has seen its day. Therefore, no leggings except at the gym.
Small shoulder purses Some clients tell me that they use these instead of a clutch. I will promptly say that they should get a clutch, and never wear a fake. Ever.

Moccasins These were fun for a while, and cute with the bohemian aesthetic, but not this year.
KEEP: Skinny jeans These have not gone out of style for a reason, they look so good with the boot trend: ankle booties, heels, knee high boots, riding boots the list goes on endlessly. Invest in a good pair and get some affordable trendier ones. The key trend colour this season is distressed black.
Leather pants I convinced many of my clients last year to invest in a leather skinny pant and across the board everyone was a believer. Leather is hot again this year so pull out your leather pants or perhaps get a different colour.
Leopard print anything I love this trend, it appeals to my inner rocker child. Leopard details are everywhere this season, from scarves, to jackets, to pants. Keep in mind the idea of less is more. Head to toe leopard print is probably best for Halloween.
Biker jackets This is another of my favourite trends. Isabel Marant designed a great one last season and this year Philip Lim revamps the trend with a terrific biker jacket. This fall you will find every designer doing a version of the jacket, and you'll be sure to find one that works for you.
Black and white prints Polka dots, abstract, stripes‌these are always easy to dig up in your closet and by adding a camel colour, or cobalt blue will enhance a contrast. This is where you could rock the cobalt clutch!

Sleek tailored blazers Back again with a vengeance, this is my number one note to all women: aquiring a great tailored blazer is worth the money. If you don't like the stiffness of a blazer, or if it doesn't suit your lifestyle it is worth checking out some of the other blazer-like coats with some stretch. These coats are great for our mild Vancouver weather.
Sleek ankle boots I love my chunky ankle boots, but this year I will be enhancing my wardrobe with another option for a sleeker more ladylike cut of an ankle boot. These will look great with my leather pants!
Colourful bag Once you get a basic black bag you can try a great cobalt or orange bag to liven up your outfits. Kerrisdale offers many places to shop for these essentials. If you still are confused and need a little lift in the wardrobe department you can always call a stylist.
