Businesses will participate in the fun and offer amazing sidewalk sales. What makes so many Kerrisdale shops special is the people behind them. We again feature two successful businesses that have been around for many years. Monaliza’s Fine Lingerie is celebrating 20 years in Kerrisdale. The owners, Mo and Rahima Shahban, have three beautiful daughters, two are pictured on the cover (Shenaz and Faizah) walking along West 41st Avenue. Monaliza’s clientele ranges from 12 year olds looking for their first training bra through to women in their 90s. Minerva’s Restaurant has been in Kerrisdale
for 39 years and has expansion plans in the works! The menu features fabulous traditional Greek cuisine with a fusion of flavours from other parts of the Mediterranean. This popular dining spot is owned by Nando Pavlakis and his son John. Guest contributor Lois Beckett interviews talented local filmmaker Corbin Saleken, and interior designer Anna Dhillon is excited to share some of her secrets to put a designer mark on your home. While the first day of fall officially begins on September 23, Kerrisdale wraps up another season of Concerts Under the Clock, swimming at Maple Grove Outdoor Pool and Play Palace. Kerrisdale Antiques Fair takes over the Arena August 30 and 31 before the ice is flooded. Kerrisdale Farmers Market concludes a bountiful season on October 11. Thanksgiving arrives and families gather around tables to feast and honour their traditions. Imaginations kick into overdrive as costumes are assembled for Halloween. The Kerrisdale Business Association sponsors the Free Halloween Skate on October 26. In early November the clocks fall back one hour and the days get shorter and cooler. The essence of what makes so many Kerrisdale shops special is the people behind them. Monaliza’s Fine Lingerie is a shining example of a family owned and operated business where personal service, accompanied by very big smiles and plenty of laughter, comes first. Rahima Shahban and her husband Mo Shahban own Monaliza’s. The busy couple also have plenty of help from their three daughters, Shafia, Shenaz and Faizah, who all share their mother’s enthusiasm for the products they sell. They also happen to be very involved with their studies at U.B.C. and have very promising careers ahead of them. Long-term Kerrisdale residents may remember Vanity Lingerie, which was located for many years at the corner of West 41st Avenue and Yew Street where Starbucks now resides. Mo Shahban was given an opportunity to work at the shop where the owner Mr. Burton Chark became his friend and mentor. When Vanity 10

Established in 1995, Monaliza’s is preparing to celebrate 20 years in Kerrisdale, a true achievement in the world of ever changing retail. Monaliza’s Fine Lingerie is a mecca for lingerie and sleepwear imported from Europe and Australia. Many of these lines are exclusive to the shop as the Shahbans are also importers and wholesalers. You won’t find Mo Shahban in the store as he handles the wholesale end of this business. Some of the nighties and loungewear are made from organic fabrics including pure silk, pima cotton and bamboo. From classic long white cotton night dresses trimmed with lace to intimate head turning chemise and baby dolls, there is something to make you feel and look sensational. Beyond the shop, Rahima Shahban likes to give back to the community by supporting local fundraising initiatives. She is also a mentor with the Women in Leadership program.
I was curious to know if there have been any other significant evolutions in the world of lingerie since Rahima Shahban started the business. She notes she has seen a shift in customer’s buying habits. She says young women are more aware of intimate wear as they search for the right undergarment to flatter their clothing.
Having spent a large portion of her life in Kerrisdale, Rahima Shahban enjoys being a part of this historic shopping village. She appreciates the variety of shops, services and restaurants but at the top of her list of things that make her happy is walking down the street and encountering people she knows. She says this is most pleasing, to be connected to the community, a place where she is proud to own a business and call home.
A Monaliza experience is not limited to an in store experience. A number of special services are offered to make shopping a breeze. Many clients are from out of town and will either pop in when they come to Kerrisdale, but more often they opt to take advantage of the online shopping service.

Minerva’s Restaurant:

You may know him as Nonda, Noda, or even Eddie. In fact his full Greek name is Epaminondas Pavlakis and he has owned Minerva’s restaurant since 1975. He now works in partnership with his son John Pavlakis. In the 1970s a customer named Fred Venables dined at the establishment seven days a week. Venables struggled with Pavlakis first name and nicknamed him Eddie. To this day some long-term customers still call him by this name created by his friend all those years ago. Nonda (the name he commonly goes by) Pavlakis is originally from Nafpaktos, Greece. The youngest of eight children, in 1967 he left the pretty portside town to join two of his siblings who had already settled in Vancouver. He worked for a short stint as a bus boy, as a tailor at a clothing store on Granville Street and at the Greek Copacabana nightclub in 16

East Vancouver. Pavlakis’ varied career path was interrupted when a friend approached him to become business partners and purchase a restaurant called Minerva’s. They embarked on the adventure together although his friend was only associated with the business for a short time. The large 115-seat restaurant is open for dinner seven days a week. Pavlakis is very loyal to his customers and does not allow the restaurant to be booked for private functions. He feels that he would be letting people down if they showed up only to find the restaurant closed. Minerva’s is known for a menu that marries traditional Greek cuisine with a fusion of flavours from other parts of the Mediterranean, including crispy pizza and hearty pasta dishes. Pavlakis says the barbecue sauce recipe invented by John’s grandfather has become one of their bestkept secrets. •

Some of the tempting menu selections include steak (which is highly recommended), roast lamb (served with rice pilaf, roast potato, Greek salad and pita bread), souvlaki (beef, chicken, lamb and prawn), mousakka, and baby back spare ribs (these tender ribs are one of Minerva’s specialties baked in the secret barbecue sauce). There are twenty-nine pizzas to choose from and sources tell me they are delicious. Pavlakis’ wife Kay helps behind the bar and has a reputation for her excellent Martinis. John Pavlakis has created a very nice wine list with a variety of local and international bottles to pair with your meal. He also plays a large role in menu development.

The day Nonda Pavlakis and I spoke he confirmed they were proceeding with another expansion of the business. Over the years they have already expanded twice. With last

years’ closing of neighbouring Art’s Place, Minerva’s is set to take over the space. Under a new and as yet to be determined name, a wine bar will be built and is bound to attract a large clientele. There are a few secrets to the longevity of this restaurant. Pavlakis is proud to report that many of his staff has been with him for a very long time. One of the cooks has been with the business for 34 years, while others have been there 25, 28 and 30 years. His sister-inlaw has been a server with the restaurant for 37 years. This staff continuity creates a warm and home-like atmosphere where customers feel welcome. While some of Minerva’s older clients are now gone, Pavlakis reports that a younger generation has come along. Some customers have moved away to other parts of Metro Vancouver but make a point of returning to Minerva’s to dine and say hello to Pavlakis and his employees. If you are craving a Minerva’s meal but do not feel like stepping outside of your house order by phone or online. You can also place orders for pick up. Pavlakis points out that his delivery drivers have also been with the business for many years. I suggested that his staff must love working with him, which he quickly brushed off with a joke at his own expense. •

Not many Kerrisdale businesses can claim to have been open for 39 years. Pavlakis loves being out on the floor where he enjoys interacting with customers. He likes the social aspect of the business and appreciates seeing familiar faces and engaging in conversations. Pavlakis confesses that he is not a homebody. When he is not at Minerva’s his favourite pastimes are travelling and dining at other restaurants. His friends joke that he spends so little time at home he should simply sleep in his car.

However, he loves the area and is fiercely loyal to the neighbourhood where he also resides. Does he have any plans to retire? Seven days a week you will see Pavlakis at Minerva’s in the morning reading his newspaper and drinking coffee. He thrives on this routine. He administers the invoices and returns phone calls. For the past 37 years his father-in-law Steve Stavridis has handled Minerva’s ordering. Like a morning songbird he arrives at six o’clock to start his day. Not many Kerrisdale businesses can claim to have been open for 39 years. I was curious to hear Pavlakis’ perception of the changes that have taken 18

Five Ways to Put a Designer Mark on Your Home by Anna Dhillon Most of my clients come to me seeking advice about how to pull together their home, either through renovating or putting together and sourcing furniture plans for entire rooms. From time to time I get asked for tips on how to make a quick impact. I recently spent some time sourcing in Kerrisdale and I am excited to share some great ways to do just that. Fall is a wonderful time to do this as the hectic schedule or lazy days of summer are over and the holiday season always arrives faster than anticipated!
Paint
Paint is an excellent way to freshen up and set the tone of a room. I love Farrow and Ball paints, an old school British company founded in 1946 in Dorset, England. The attention to quality and detail shows not only in their product but also in their colour selection which is an approachable 132. Farrow and Ball paints use 32% more pigment than that of their competitors and are clay based, not acrylic based which results in a softer look because clay absorbs light as opposed to acrylic which deflects it. Generally I lean towards neutral colours and grey right now is one of my absolute favourites and go-to’s for almost any space. If you are looking for a grey that has no green, purple or blue undertone turn to one of Farrow and Ball’s recently released 5 new shades - 3 of which are the perfect shades of grey. 26

Wallpaper If you want to go one step further, wallpaper can add a wow factor to any space. Again I suggest turning to Farrow and Ball for a truly unique, distinct and luxurious look. At the moment three of my favourite patterns are Ocelot, Lattice and Tessela. The company’s wallpapers are hand painted and blocked using their paints so finding a coordinating wall paint colour is never a problem. Designer tip: looking for the perfect white? Turn to Farrow and Ball’s All White (#2005) which works with cool and warm tones and is an excellent to highlight art in any room. Farrow and Ball paints can be found at Perry & Co.
Dining Table A lot of what goes on in most people’s homes happens around a dining table. Regardless of whether you are going for a traditional, transitional or modern look a beautiful wood table with lots of natural grain is very on trend. It is made from premium legacy logs, a natural edge around the perimeter and is finished with a beautiful matte resin which gives it a timeless yet current look. The Occasional Chair An often-neglected item of furniture is the occasional chair. Whether for sitting in to sip a glass of wine or read a book it is worth hunting down one that works well in your home, is comfortable and reflects you. I have recently fallen in love with the Duvivier Capri chair. Beautifully stitched with the perfect calf leather it is a statement piece that has luxury, comfort and style written all over it. With the perfect ambient or task light beside it, it’s worth the investment for a living room, entry way or bedroom. This chair can be found at Form & Function.
Flowers When in doubt, an over the top floral arrangement placed on your kitchen island, coffee table or bedroom chest of drawers adds life to a space. My preference is tight, low and monochromatic arrangements. Among my go to florists is Quince, where they take the time to show you what is fresh from the floral market and wrap every bouquet using the loveliest ribbon detail. I won’t lie, as a designer the little details get me every time. Here is what I walked out with last week. A Talented Filmmaker in Our Midst by Lois Beckett photos submitted
On a beautiful warm day, I sat down and had a chat with Kerrisdale native, Corbin Saleken, who is a filmmaker, director, writer, producer, picture and sound editor.
filmmaker for his short film ‘The Vehicle.’ In addition, the film was named Best Short of the Northwest. He was very surprised to win these two awards.
In addition to the many artistic hats he wears Saleken is also employed at Simon Fraser University where he has worked for 15 years as a film and video resource specialist.
“I fully recognize how subjective any award is, and it doesn’t honestly mean that I am the best at anything; on the other hand, I would like to think that it is at least an acknowledgement that someone responded to what I was trying to communicate, and that is definitely validating.”
Saleken was born in Vancouver and has lived in Kerrisdale his entire life. He attained a B.A. from U.B.C. and attended Werner Herzog Rogue Film School in New Jersey. As a child he was curious and imaginative and always had an interest in film. His mother is partially responsible for his passion as she often took him and his brother to the movies. In 2013 he was named most promising 30

Saleken’s most recent project is a feature film entitled ‘Patterson’s Wager’ which tells the story of a man (Fred Ewanuick from ‘Corner Gas’) who has an unexplainable gift to see into the future. His girlfriend (played by Chelah Horsdal) suggests that he is experiencing ‘ignis fatuus’, and that he is really seeing mirages. •

In 2013 he was named most promising filmmaker for his short film ‘The Vehicle.’ He recently finished editing a documentary called ‘For Our Daughters’ about Ghanaian girls who did a speaking tour in B.C. in order to raise money for girls’ education in Ghana.

A novel that he has been tinkering with has been in the works for a number of years and he hopes to finish it some day. Whether or not he will make another movie is yet to be decided based on the expense involved. He also has a few screenplays that he hopes will be picked up. Saleken is motivated by the fact that he has only a limited amount of time to tell all the stories that he wants to share, and he makes films that he wants to see. His favourite directors are Werner Herzog, Terrence Malick, the Coen Brothers, Krzysztof Kielsowski, Cameron Crowe and the Duplass Brothers. He says, “They are all great story tellers who are, in their own unique ways, constantly striving to capture something authentic about the human experience. They all make extremely engaging movies.” Some of his favourite movies are Bottle Rocket, The Abyss, The Thin Red Line, Zodiac, JFK, The Lost Ark and Thelma and Louise because they are great stories that are told exceedingly well, and they all
