Publisher's Note Welcome, autumn! The golden season brings the beauty of trees turning colour, and locally grown pumpkins that transform into Thanksgiving pies and Halloween jack-o’-lanterns. It also brings cozy sweaters, umbrellas, and plenty of leaves to rake. The Steveston Merchants Association is preparing for its fall events with a scaled down version to keep everyone safe. October begins with the month-long Steveston Scarecrow Crawl and ends with Trick-or-Treating in Steveston Village at participating businesses. The winner of the best scarecrow is awarded $1,000. It’s back! Girls’ Night Out (November 18) is one of the most popular shopping events of the year. Women head out for a fun evening of shopping and dining, although some businesses may opt to extend their offerings during the day to avoid large crowds. Santa is booked to arrive by boat on December 5, however, he will not be visiting children in the Cannery this year, so stay tuned for a revised event and the Winter in the Village calendar. Our cover story shines the spotlight on Mark Glavina, the owner of Phoenix Art Workshop. Mark is also an artist, art instructor, founder and organizer of the Grand Prix of Art, and operates and guides international art tours with his company The Travelling Brush.
Fenton and Lenny Entwistle’s latest venture, the Steveston Sweet Shoppe which has recently opened. You will find everything from internationally sourced confectionery to novelty candies such as Hotlix suckers with real crickets encased in the centre and freeze-dried astronaut ice cream. Did you know that the Rotary Club of Steveston is celebrating its 20th anniversary? This organization endeavours to change lives for the better. Read about the numerous programs they are involved in both locally and internationally, including the Shred event on October 9 at McMath Secondary School where, by donation, you can safely dispose of unwanted documents. We welcome two new businesses to the village: 993 Hot Dog Shop is opening at 3900 Bayview Street (between Waves and Purpose Smoothie) and Richmond Steveston Physiotherapy and Sports Injury is opening at 4020 Bayview Street. We look forward to the cooler days after a very hot and dry summer. It’s time to bring out warm clothing and celebrate the return of rain. All the new puppies in town will not know what to make of this unfamiliar wet weather! Wishing you all a happy autumn.

PHOENIX ART WORKSHOP: Nuturing Our Community Through Art Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos submitted
It was four days before the 11th annual Grand Prix of Art, yet Mark Glavina was relaxed as he took time out of his busy schedule to discuss everything from plein air painting, to the way Phoenix Art Workshop has successfully endured the pandemic and his hope to travel to exotic locations again soon. Mark juggles many roles seamlessly: he’s an artist, an art instructor, a successful business owner, the founder and organizer of the Grand Prix of Art, and he operates and guides international art tours with his company The Travelling Brush. Next year Phoenix Art Workshop will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Mark’s original business Phoenix Coastal Arts opened in 1997 on Moncton Street. It expanded in 2001 when Phoenix Art Workshop opened on Chatham; the Moncton Street space closed soon after. The store sells art supplies and has an 8
excellent reputation for custom framing. In addition, Mark runs a studio on First Avenue where painting and drawing classes are held. Emphasis is placed on visual literacy, design, and individual creativity. Mark says, “We have a good cross-section of students from beginners, to developing young artists and more sophisticated, intermediate, and professional artists.”
“It brings me joy to see past students come in to talk about their projects.” In March 2020, when COVID-19 hit and Canadians were instructed to stay home, Mark speedily pivoted his familiar business model. He says, “Everything was on the line. We adapted quickly for fear of failure, especially in small Steveston.”

The store’s products became available online. Mark remarks, “We have been delivering to Richmond residents all pandemic long, but we don't ship other than by special order. Curbside pick-up was popular for a spell, but I am not crazy about the idea of a drive-through art store.” Unexpectedly, Mark's online art classes opened up an international clientele; he recorded over 100 virtual classes, from exploring modern art to teaching watercolour, drawing, and colour theory. Phoenix Art Workshop is now returning to in-person classes. For those unfamiliar with the Grand Prix of Art, artists are randomly assigned a painting location from 35 sites along Steveston’s waterfront. Artists have three and a half hours to complete their paintings and return to the Britannia Shipyards to prepare their paintings for display and adjudication.
“After the virtual event, we feel blessed to have the in-person event back.” Last year Mark managed to adapt the Grand Prix, which had to be cancelled. Paint in Place
2020 was a way to honour the annual event in a COVID world although the camaraderie and sense of local community were missing. “The online event was a lifeline for many people self-isolating but real contact, person to person, artist to artist contact is an integral part of the human condition as social beings,” says Mark. Looking ahead to 2022-2023, Mark is excited about the prospect of three separate trips with his “Travelling Brush family” to Malta, Mexico, and Morocco. These trips combine Mark’s passion for art and travel. He indicates travelling to international regions still hinges on vaccinations and health plans are having to be taken into consideration now, unlike prepandemic times.
“We are there to experience rather than observe different cultures.” “It’s a safe and easy way to travel. The Travelling Brush isn’t a tour agency. People aren’t shuffled about from place to place. We see interesting things, and it doesn’t rob you of the adventure of travel.” October - November 2021

Mark’s friend who is one of the top watercolourists in the world. In Turkey, they visited a renowned potter’s studio. Mark describes how his senses are enriched when he creates art on location. He says, “People accept you differently on location while painting a street scene or making a painting of a person.”
“I discover the world one brushstroke at a time.” He never feels alone when he travels, without fail he meets people. For Mark, painting opens up possibilities, as people approach him and he discovers the innate humanity of people. “I have never had anything stolen, nor been caught in a riot, knock on wood,” he says with a laugh. Through his travels and his art, he explores stories, cultures, and neighbourhoods at street level and as a human experience. Spouses and also non-artists are welcome to join these trips. Mark provides an example of a woman who came along because she liked the dynamics of the Travelling Brush family. While on tour, participants paint in the streets, enjoy happy hour critiques and visit art studios and galleries. Mark says, “Each place we visit is so different.” In Portugal, the group met

“I am so lucky to have travelled and there are different trips that stand out for different reasons. Guatemala will always be close to my heart. I feel we bring so much value as mindful travellers staying in Guatemalan-run hotels and having a truly unique experience. I believe our guests would be less likely to have this experience if travelling with traditional agencies.”

Mark equates plein air painting to competing with oneself to do more, do better, and put aside one’s fears. He believes it is good for an artist’s growth and development—they learn from nature and the adrenalin of painting in the fresh air, without the shortcuts that come from hiding behind a camera. He concludes the interview with a story about a trip to Peru where he painted a very small and elderly woman with an amazing face. A crowd built as he painted and when the work was complete they roared. It is these shared moments that are among the greatest rewards of being an artist. As for his students, he hopes “to feed them as much as their bellies can take of art.” Phoenix Art Workshop 8 - 3891 Chatham Street Richmond, BC V7E 2Z6 Telephone 604-448-1860 www.phoenixartworkshop.com

ASK A STEVESTON INSIDER
I have had some stomach and gut upset for a while now. Would a digestive enzyme help? Maybe. Gastrointestinal issues can be complex, and so it is always advisable to discuss your ailments with your physician first. If you have ruled out common things like acid reflux, sensitivies, or obstructions, for example, then the issue may be indigestion. A good digestive enzyme can help alleviate symptoms of gassiness, bloating, cramping, churning, and discomfort along your gut simply by helping break down and digest your food properly in order to allow for appropriate absorption. Other benefits include a maximization of your foods’ nutrient and energy values, as well as minimizing unnecessary inflammation. You can get specific or broad-spectrum enzymes. Two we particularly like for cost-effectiveness, exceptional quality, and overall favourable patient response are Thorne’s Bio-Gest, and Metagenics’ Spectrazyme Complete. Remember to always take a digestive enzyme with plenty of water at the beginning of a meal. Come chat with our integrative pharmacists at Pharmasave Steveston Village to see what is best for you and how to take it.

STEVESTON SWEET SHOPPE: Making Steveston a Whole Lot Sweeter Story by Sarah Gordon
Photos by Carolynne Palla
A Willy Wonka-esque candy store with an inviting lollipop garden window display has opened in Steveston. It’s a place where sugary dreams come to life as you explore the internationally sourced sweet temptations that have been rounded up in one location.
In 2017, she and Lenny came up with the idea of opening a new British shop after Mary’s British Home closed. Building on the success of their first retail venture, and aware that candies are a big draw at Best of British, they decided to expand on the theme.
Elly Fenton and Lenny Entwistle are the dynamic duo behind Steveston Sweet Shoppe. Their sister shop Best of British is located next door. A wall separates the two stores but the common backroom storage space benefits both businesses.
“We thrive on running all of the businesses. We love what we are doing,” says Lenny.
The friends met over ten years ago when Lenny was Elly’s hairstylist at her salon Hair by Lenny that she still operates. Last year Elly sold her neighbouring company, Robel Tax Service, but she continues there as a consultant and is as busy as ever.
Steveston Sweet Shoppe was supposed to open in April, however, it took months to receive a permit to forge ahead with the minor renovations required to transform a portion of the storefront space they acquired from Village

Books. In early September, it opened to the delight of customers who eagerly awaited the plethora of sweet treats. Are you feeling nostalgic for your homeland or wishing to taste goodies that you experienced on your travels? The candy genies have granted your wish; confectionery from America, Australia, Britain, Holland, Japan, and Mexico, (among other countries) is carried. Lenny is a natural-born designer and has a keen eye when it comes to finding vintage décor that feels right at home in the candy shop. She came up with some wonderful finds including china cabinets which were given new life in shades of pink, red and purple. She also collected Cadbury display racks circa 1960 and 1970 in their traditional deep purple colour. Adding to the vibrant décor, local artist Laura Kwok was commissioned to create a lively and colourful candy wonderland mural. As well, Lenny picked up a vintage light fixture from her friend Laura at The Fab Pad; it creates the feeling of a blue moon hanging above the mural’s sky.
Some of the novelty candies include Hotlix suckers with real crickets encased in the centre and freeze-dried astronaut ice cream.

The shop also carries soft drinks, juice, and Chubby soda from Trinidad and Tobago. Lenny remarks, “These are items you can’t get elsewhere.” She adds with a laugh, “I pick the brains of McMath Secondary students for their ideas.” The shop also carries some healthy sugar-free and gluten-free alternatives, after all, nobody should miss out on a candy fix. Lenny says, “Britain is big on offering these options.” Cheerful pink, yellow and green barrels are filled with pick and mix wrapped candy. Lenny comments, “Scoop up what you like, have it weighed, and there you go!” Part of the fun when going to the United States is exploring their different candy bars. You can find 100 Grand and Payday at the Sweet Shoppe.

“Everyone loves salt water taffy,” says Lenny, so a section of the store is devoted to this soft and chewy classic American candy. Another section features bubble gum.
Lenny says, “From toddlers to adults, people of all ages love candy.” Lenny and Elly believe Christmas will be a busy time. They anticipate gift certificates will be popular and they will likely run an Instagram contest.
bookkeeping. We do the ordering together and I make things look pretty.” They are both deeply appreciative of the support they received leading up to the store’s opening. Many friends volunteered to help; four days before the opening they came to assist with unpacking and displaying products while they enjoyed beer and pizza. “We can sense people’s enthusiasm, the community wants this to succeed. Come in and tell us what candy you miss and we will try our best to source it for you,” Lenny says.
Both partners float back and forth between the two stores in addition to having assistance from their valued staff. Lenny says, “It’s a fun atmosphere. Elly manages the payroll and

ROTARY CLUB OF STEVESTON: Service Above Self
Story and photos submitted by Trevor Stickler, President The Rotary Club of Steveston is celebrating twenty rewarding years of service both to our community and internationally. Right from the start, the Rotary Club of Steveston focussed on youth and seniors. We have supported numerous programs including: • DARE in partnership with the Richmond RCMP • Toys for Kids • Senior summer BBQs and Christmas lunches. • Supplied a vehicle (4-year commitment) to Richmond Cares Richmond Gives so that they may drive seniors to appointments. • Initiated and support the McMath Secondary School Interact Club (a leadership program), with over 100 outstanding students, providing scholarships and bursaries for students. • Sending youth to RYLA (Rotary camp) and supporting and hosting Rotary International exchange student programs. • Preparing pancake breakfasts to help school fundraisers. • Cooking at the Salmon Festivals, and participating in the parade, winning awards for our pirate float. • Sponsored a "Fish Boat Fest" educational event at our fish sales dock in the early days, bringing elementary school children to tour the different fish boats. • Delivered dictionaries to over 400 grade five students (yearly) on behalf of our late member Bob Jones, well-known for his commitment to youth. • First Tee – British Columbia, raises funds through our annual Jack Evans Memorial Golf Tournament. First Tee prides itself on
30
teaching children nine core values through golf. These core values include honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment. Our fundraising events have included: • Jimmy Ng (the young RCMP officer killed on duty in Richmond) Memorial Ball Hockey Tournaments. All proceeds were given to charities determined by his parents, typically $5,000-6,000. • The Duck Race was a fun event along the Fraser River. Buy a duck; the first ten across the finish line win a prize! • Club members directed parking at the RCMP Musical Rides. • Our ecology efforts at the two men's Canadian Open golf tournaments at Shaughnessy Golf Course raised nearly $10,000. • Hosted walks around Garry Point for disasters in Haiti, the Bahamas, and the Australian fires; proudly, one hundred per cent of the funds raised went directly to these causes. • Helped rebuild the back garden at The Salvation Army Rotary Hospice House and provided a $20,000 donation for a new electric bed. • Loan Rotary tents for use at local events such as the Herring Sale for Kids with Cancer, Garlic Festival, and many more. • The wine and food festival (Grapes, Hops, and Bites) has been our mainstay for fundraising. This event was held at the historic Gulf of Georgia Cannery and has been well supported by the Steveston businesses and community.

October - November 2021
• Our fundraising in 2011 for the Japanese earthquake and tsunami showed our capabilities for larger-scale events. Expecting to raise $10,000 in a walk for the survivors, we generated $140,000; one hundred per cent was delivered to the mayor of Wakayama for the children who survived the devastation in the city of Onagawa. Internationally, we are involved in helping Rotary eliminate polio worldwide. We sent a surgical microscope to Uganda, supported women's schools in Africa, a dental program in Central America headed by Dr. Doug Nielsen, and a sports medicine service in Africa initiated by Dr. Sean Graham and Dr. Jack Taunton. These are but a few of the projects we support locally and internationally. • Food security has been our primary focus for the past 18 months. We have partnered with the Richmond School District and Save-on-Foods to supply and deliver food hampers covering 700 families. We received approximately $50,000 through grants which augmented our fundraising efforts to support this program. We spend $5,500 a year on food hampers to support families during the holiday season. We also support the hot lunch program for seniors in need sponsored by the Minoru Seniors Society, through funding the meal cost and delivering meals to more than 15 seniors every two weeks. • Currently, the B.C. Wildfire Relief 2021 has dominated our fundraising efforts. Rotary Clubs, Rotarians, family, and friends across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and central Washington have responded with cash donations for wildfire evacuees in B.C. As of August 22, we have raised close to $50,000 in contributions between the Rotary Club of Steveston-Richmond Charitable Society and Aurora (Kamloops Rotary Club). We have converted these donations into gift cards. Providing gift cards affords the evacuees dignity and personal choice to purchase what they need. Our society partners with EOC (Emergency Operation Centres) and October - November 2021
ESS (Emergency Service Sites) to distribute the gift cards to evacuees in Merritt, Lillooet, Hope, Kamloops, Kelowna, and evacuees in Lower Nicola Indian Band and Siska First Nations. • Our flagship program is Write to Read B.C. (W2R); it has been running for the past ten years, establishing libraries in B.C. First Nation communities. An enriching program headed by Bob Blacker, who, with help, has established seventeen libraries. In addition to books, many sites have also been provided computers, building facilities, and furniture. Bob asks what the community needs, listens, then tries to fulfill their needs. Special thanks to the Madsen family self-storage facility for donating storage for hundreds of books for distribution. We want to thank everyone who has donated already. The Rotary Club of StevestonRichmond Charitable Society will continue to accept donations. You may e-transfer to society@stevestonrotary.ca
The Shred event will take place on October 9th at McMath Secondary School. Steveston Rotary is very grateful and would like to acknowledge all the businesses and individuals for their commitment to the community and for helping us to help others. If these programs touch your heart and you want to give back to your community, you are probably a Rotarian already but don't know it. Please join us in this journey.
