Summer greetings, Steveston!

As the hot days of summer wind down, our charming waterfront community prepares for the cooler, colourful autumn days ahead.

The 77th annual Steveston Salmon Festival was a fantastic way to celebrate Canada Day. Next up are the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival, Richmond Maritime Festival, and Culture Days. There is still time to head to the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market, the Vintage Fair in Town Square Park, visit the exhibits at the heritage sites, or book a Steveston Alive walking tour. Tourism Richmond’s free Discover Shuttle connects visitors to the village from downtown Richmond to Steveston; it operates on weekends and statutory holidays through September 8.

The Steveston Merchants Association (SMA) is busy planning our community’s favourite fall events. We look forward to the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl, Trick or Treating in the Village, Girls’ Night Out, the Holiday Window Contest, Santa’s arrival by boat, and Winter in the Village, in partnership with Tourism Richmond and the City of Richmond.

At the south end of No. 2 Road in Steveston’s London Landing neighbourhood, you will find Mia Montessori Academy, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This jewel of a school for children ages two and a half to 12 empowers them to become compassionate, respectful,

and independent learners. Pictured on the front cover are the mother-daughter owners, Meenu Chaudhary and Ratika Fernandes.

After 21 years in the little white heritage house at their original location on No. 1 Road, the Satori Integrative Health Centre team recently expanded to an exciting new location on First Avenue between Moncton and Bayview. Read about Satori founders Dr. Sean Graham and Danielle Aldcorn, who are honoured to continue serving the community in a new chapter from this larger healing space.

Steveston loves their dogs, and Little Paws Animal Clinic is a full-service Steveston Village veterinary clinic dedicated to treating dogs and cats of all sizes, as well as rabbits, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, ferrets, chinchillas, and rodents.

Since the last issue, we have welcomed several new businesses to the neighbourhood, including Lee’s Donuts, Hackney Nine Jewellery, Milky Snow, and Nest Designs. Davood’s Bistro closed, and John’s Pan Pizza is moving into the space. Ochi Fashion closed, and SOS Children’s Village Thrift Store has returned to its original name of Treasure Cottage Secondhand.

Stroll the boardwalk, watch the fishing boats, dine at one of Steveston’s many restaurants and cafes, browse the unique shops, and enjoy the remaining sunny summer days. As always, we thank you for loyally supporting our local events and businesses.

MIA MONTESSORI ACADEMY: A Learning Environment Where Children Thrive

At the south end of No. 2 Road in Steveston’s London Landing neighbourhood, you will find Mia Montessori Academy. This jewel of a school for children ages two and a half to 12 years old empowers them to become compassionate, respectful and independent learners.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Mia Montessori’s opening. The school was originally called Pacific Rim Montessori Academy and was briefly located in Vancouver. In 2005, the founder and head of the school, Meenu Chaudhary, added a location in Steveston, where it was based in Steveston United Church. The popular school outgrew its space and moved to its beautiful London Landing location in 2016.

Meenu’s daughter Ratika Fernandes is the Academy’s vice-principal; the mother-daughter team seamlessly works together.

Meenu’s introduction to Montessori began when she was looking for a school for Ratika. The principal of the school Ratika attended was trained by Dr. Montessori herself; the commitment to her pedagogy was strong, and Meenu quickly noticed the difference Montessori education had on Ratika and her sister. Inspired by the impact, she enrolled in

the training course to become a Primary (Casa) Teacher for three to six-year-olds.

Shortly after completing the training, the family immigrated to Canada and moved to Steveston. Meenu started working as a substitute, assistant, teacher and finally administrator at a school in Point Grey. After 11 years, she took a risk and began Pacific Rim Montessori Academy. Watching her mother’s challenges as an educator, Ratika decided on a different career path. However, after 15 years in the corporate world, she realized that to make a change in the world, we have to start with children, not adults, as they are hope for a better future.

The name Mia (‘my’ in Italian) honours Dr. Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori approach to education.

Motivating Dr. Montessori’s educational efforts was her desire to create a better and more peaceful world by nurturing the spirit of each child. This included time for silence and reflection, cultivating awe and wonder, respecting nature, caring for the earth,

understanding and accepting others, and fostering virtues such as love, peacefulness, and kindness.

Ratika says, “We celebrate how the Montessori approach is designed to ensure the student comes to see and think of it as ‘my education, my future, my journey.’ Unlike traditional educational philosophies, it creates a context where the student is the owner of their education instead of having education be something done to them. And so, ‘Mia Education—my education’ is what the Montessori approach and our school instill in students.”

Meenu adds, “Our vision is to create a learning environment true to Dr. Montessori’s philosophy, and we are proud to be one of four AMI (Association Montessori International, the organization established by Maria and her son Mario) Recognized Schools across the Lower Mainland.”

The school’s 20th anniversary year marks another significant milestone as Mia has again outgrown its space and is expanding.

Mia Montessori Academy is opening an additional primary program this fall just around the corner, across the street from Ember Restaurant. The original space on London Road will continue to operate, and the students will meet for communal activities on the beautiful green space overlooking Shady Island.

The school is divided into three classrooms, two for primary students and the other for elementary-aged students. The learning environments have white walls, many large windows, high ceilings, and an open-concept plan divided into specific learning spaces.

“From three to approximately six years of age, Dr. Montessori found that children have sponge-like minds that absorb information easily. She called this the absorbent mind. They’re predisposed towards learning things like order, sequencing, language, music, letters, shapes and sounds, eventually leading to math, writing and reading skills. They demonstrate an innate desire to make choices and accomplish tasks independently,” says Ratika.

The primary program enables children to do tasks for themselves. Materials are set out on low shelves that are open and available to each child. Ample materials, child-sized tables

and chairs, and space on the floor to work are features of Montessori schools. There is a set of materials for the children to use in several basic categories of learning, including practical life, sensorial, language, math and culture (botany, biology, zoology, history, geography, music and art).

The role of the teacher (directress) is to guide the child’s energies and assist them to connect with the work they need to fulfill their development.

The elementary environment aims to render the student independent of the directress. Montessori materials are arranged from the concrete to the abstract. However, as the students gain confidence in concepts, there are fewer and fewer materials due to the student’s efforts and discovery, moving towards more abstract learning and thus greatly expanding their field of knowledge. They work in small groups or individually on projects that spark the imagination and engage the intellect.

Mia Montessori Academy exceeds the B.C. curriculum. The teachers plan weekly lessons for every child based on their ability and achievements over the week. When students move on to high school, they find the Montessori education they received helps them understand concepts using visual representation, not by memorizing formulas but by truly understanding them.

The school has 80 students and ten teachers. Students benefit from this learning environment, where younger children learn from their peers, and older students are role models and leaders for the little ones.

“The longer a child has the opportunity to learn in a Montessori environment, the more benefits they receive coupled with a lifelong love of learning,” says Meenu.

“So many students return after moving to traditional high schools and universities and share their perspectives, only fully appreciating the benefits a Montessori foundation gave them now that they can perceive it from the other side.”

Glowing testimonials abound from parents and students. Anya Zadra is a parent of two Mia graduates; she reflects on her sons’ Montessori education.

“I still remember the day I walked into Mia, then Pacific Rim Montessori. I was looking for the best option for my son. As it turned out, it was the best school I could have ever asked for. I travelled the Montessori journey with my two boys, Vinny and Nicky and my husband Rob for 11 years, and if I had to do it again, I would absolutely make the same decision.”

She adds, “My boys are not perfect, but they are mature and capable and work hard for what they want. I attribute this to their time at Mia. Meenu, Ratika and their excellent team of teachers have the ability to let children see that they are capable of everything; with hard work, they can accomplish anything. Happy 20th anniversary, Mia!”

SATORI INTEGRATIVE HEALTH CENTRE: A New Chapter in an Awe-Inspiring Location

After 21 years in the little white heritage house at their original location on No. 1 Road, the Satori Integrative Health Centre team recently expanded to an exciting new location on First Avenue between Moncton and Bayview.

Satori founders Dr. Sean Graham, DC and his wife, Danielle Aldcorn, came up with the business name Satori, which means enlightenment in Japanese. They thought this word was fitting for the centre and to honour Steveston’s Japanese fishing village roots.

Their new location is housed in the wellknown three-story building on First Avenue, which Paul Meier and his brother Sebastien originally built to house their marine machinist and boat repair shop.

When Sean and Danielle came across the vacant unit, it was a large light-industry
workshop with 18-foot ceilings, but they saw the potential.

To transform the blank slate of concrete into a warm and welcoming integrated wellness centre, Satori’s renovations required adding eight new treatment rooms and a rewilding of the outdoor space to introduce therapeutic, rehab and garden areas.

The interior design was inspired by the Japanese aesthetic called Wabi-Sabi, which values objects that bear the marks of age, use, and weathering. The patina that develops over time adds character and history to an object, telling a story of its journey. The cracks, fading colours, and worn surfaces become testaments to the passage of time, evoking a sense of nostalgia and reverence for the enduring beauty found in the cycles of nature and life.

As you walk down the main corridor of the transformed Satori healing sanctuary, you feel as if you are strolling down the sidewalk of a historic fishing village.

Antiques, art and vintage treasures line the walls in the awe-inspiring modern rustic design. The indoor-outdoor clinic also incorporates the natural elements of biophilic design to invite the healing benefits of nature inside while also drawing visitors outside for quiet contemplation in the garden.

The building also houses many other popular long-time Steveston businesses, including Steveston Optical, The Balloon Place, Revive Yoga Studio, Phoenix Art Studio, Sandra Steier Photography, Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu, Steveston Music Centre, and the former home of Gemini Dance Studio.

With the expansive new space and rehab area, Satori can branch out to offer more programs and treatment options.

They have added three more counsellors, a kinesiologist, certified forest bathing, nature therapy, Pickleball coaching and a variety of lectures and group sessions.

Danielle began her career as a social worker and eventually opened her private practice as a registered clinical counsellor. Her work with children, youth and families includes issues such as anxiety, family conflict, social and behavioural concerns and autism. She facilitates communication, assertiveness, and self-awareness in clients to help them gain insight, solve problems, and cope with difficult situations.

Danielle uses a mixture of verbal and expressive therapies with younger clients, including games, art, journaling, music, stories, sand, and role-play.

Sean earned a Bachelor of Science degree from UBC and his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the Southern California University of Health Sciences. He obtained fellowship status from the Royal Chiropractic College of Sport Sciences-Canada. He treats sports injuries, headaches, back, neck, joint, and chronic pain. Sean is the head chiropractor for the BC Lions. He is also a former professional football player with the CFL, where he won a Grey Cup Championship in 2000.

Their collaborative like-minded practitioner team includes Lily Zhu (registered acupuncturist), Yolanda Wang (registered dietitian), Wesley Skakun and Aaron Tong (registered massage therapists), Luan Aldcorn Attridge (certified ADHD and academic

coach), Rebecca Farnell (child, youth and family counsellor), Mandy Rai (adult, youth and couples counsellor) and Kayla Hochfelder (youth, adult and family counsellor).

Danielle, Sean, and the entire Satori team are excited to welcome new and existing clients and patients to Satori 2.0. They are honoured to continue serving the community in a new chapter from this unique and unforgettable healing space.

LITTLE PAWS ANIMAL CLINIC: A Deep Passion for Animal Care

Little Paws Animal Clinic is a full-service Steveston Village veterinary clinic dedicated to treating dogs and cats of all sizes, rabbits, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, ferrets, chinchillas, and rodents.

Opened in 2008, Little Paws veterinarian and medical director Dr. Adam Avitan purchased the business in 2018. Since 2022, Little Paws has been under the ownership of TELUS Health; however, Dr. Adam (he and his colleagues go by their first names) and associate veterinarians Dr. Megan Chan and Dr. Matthew Tso continue to work at the respected clinic.

Little Paws Animal Clinic’s dedicated veterinarians bring expertise and a deep passion for animal care to their practice.

In 2006, Dr. Adam left B.C. to study at the University of Calgary, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. Subsequently, he pursued Veterinary Medicine at the University of Melbourne, one of the top-ranked Veterinary

schools in the world. While in Australia, Dr. Adam treated a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, horses, and birds, along with exotic creatures like koalas, kangaroos, and deadly snakes. After spending ten years away from Richmond, he returned home in 2015 to practice locally and give back to the community he grew up in.

Dr. Adam says, “I was initially drawn to Steveston for its charm and picturesque scenery; I soon discovered a vibrant community rich in warmth and charm. Beyond diagnosing and treating ailments, my daily reward lies in witnessing pets heal and flourish with the collaborative effort of their owners and our team. Whether it's a beloved dog bouncing back after surgery or a cat purring with gratitude after overcoming illness, these moments define the essence of veterinary practice here.”

“Developing relationships not only with pets but also with their owners, I am present for moments of joy and concern.” Dr. Adam

“My role extends beyond medical care to encompass support, education, and advocacy for every pet in our village. My work’s fulfillment comes from witnessing my patients’ tangible transformations— seeing them walk happy and healthy through our village streets is deeply rewarding. Each success story speaks volumes about the resilience of our furry companions and the unwavering bond between humans and animals,” he adds.

Practice Manager Ericel Chang says, “We take pride in our warm and welcoming environment. When you enter our clinic, you are greeted with a friendly smile and a calm atmosphere designed to make pets and their owners feel at ease. We understand that visiting the vet can be stressful, so we strive to create a positive experience for everyone involved.”

The veterinary team is known for its patience and empathy, which makes pet owners feel confident and reassured during visits.

Fear-free methods reduce stress and anxiety for both pets and their owners. The clinic is also AAHA Accredited, meaning they have

met and exceeded stringent quality standards encompassing all aspects of veterinary medicine, from pain management to medical recordkeeping.

The team strives to ensure pets enjoy their time at Little Paws. For high-stress and reactive pets, they offer free “happy visits” to help foster and develop positive associations with those pets and the doctors, team, and clinic facility.

The team’s dedication to continuing education and staying abreast of the latest advancements in veterinary medicine ensures that they provide the highest standard of care. Whether investing in state-of-the-art equipment or attending seminars to learn new techniques, they always strive to improve their services and exceed expectations.

Little Paws offers Canada-wide veterinarian consultations through its TELUS Health MyPet app and veterinary technician appointments (also Canada-wide). Virtual vet technicians help owners with behavioural and health maintenance concerns (housetraining, nutrition, anxiety, and at-home dental care) through their telemedicine service. Vet technicians cannot diagnose illnesses or prescribe medication; however, virtual vets can help assess your pet’s health, diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and develop treatment plans, along with everything vet technicians can do. They can assist with shipping prescriptions to clients all over B.C., direct to their door, to provide added convenience for pet owners.

The clinic’s annual membership offers pet owners affordable veterinary care. It provides in-clinic consults and unlimited virtual consults with a veterinarian or a veterinary technician through the TELUS Health MyPet app, discounts on in-clinic products, medications, and services, and discounts on products in the online myVETstore.

“My greatest reward is seeing our positive impact, from healing pets to supporting their families. It's about making a meaningful difference and fostering a healthier, happier community of pets and their loving owners,” says Ericel.

Dr. Adam concludes, “We deeply value the relationships we build with our clients and their pets. Your trust means everything to us, and we are committed to building lasting connections based on transparency, respect, and genuine care. At Little Paws Animal Clinic, you’re not just a client—you’re part of our extended family.”
