A Guide to Local Shopping & Fun! Publisher’s Note
During the month of October there will be scarecrows lurking throughout the village as the Steveston Merchants Association’s 4th annual Scarecrow Crawl returns. O’Hare’s is hosting the inaugural Steveston Beer Fest at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, and Seafair Minor Hockey Association will “Sweep the Streets of Steveston.” The Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market heads indoors for the winter. The Onni waterfront development awaits a rezoning decision this fall that will be sure to have a huge effect on Steveston village. Filming of Once Upon A Time and Bates Motel return.
Pumpkins are quietly growing in misty fields (I have also spotted some in the community gardens) and will soon transform to play a starring role on Halloween night. Children Publisher will trick-or-treat at village businesses, and they are invited PALLA MEDIA to enter Steveston Insider’s 6th Annual Costume Contest. The Carolynne Palla Gulf of Georgia Cannery’s Haunted Halloween Tours are sure to scare and excite those brave enough to step inside! Britannia Shipyards is hosting their first Haunted Shipyard with tours, children’s activities and treats. Fireworks light up the sky at several Richmond locations with a Halloween Fireworks Festival at Minoru Park. The days are getting shorter as the clocks turn back one hour in November. It’s time to bundle up warmly, settle into our fall routines and start planning for the holiday season. The popular Photographer Steveston Christmas Craft Fair takes place on November 30th at Steveston Community Centre. Steier The 3rd annual Girls’ Night Out on November 28th has become the biggestSandra shopping event and party of the year. Not many communities get the pleasure of seeing Santa arrive by whale watching boat. He makes his grand arrival at Fisherman’s Wharf on December 1st. On this day the magic of the holidays unfolds as Steveston businesses are decked in holiday style, oldfashioned horse carriage rides circle the village and other surprises await!

Russel Sean Fitness by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Russel Sean Favel and I recently sat down to talk after he returned from a week’s vacation. As the owner and head trainer of Russel Sean Fitness (RSF) he felt a bit restless partaking in some downtime, as he is completely devoted to his business. The busy fitness facility, which opened in January 2012, offers a variety of workouts. Russel Favel runs the boot camps and personal training while Yasmin Alexandria instructs yoga and Wendy Young and Terri McGinley lead spinning classes. In addition, registered dietitian Carolyn Berry is available for personal nutrition consultations. He is full of ideas and is eager to introduce more classes into the mix. Anne-Louise Parry of Lulu Family Fitness has recently come on board to assist with body sculpting and indoors mum and baby classes. Believing that your body is the best fitness tool you have, Russel Favel helps his clients create goals and focus on how to attain them. Specializing in fat loss and high intensity training, workouts are designed to be fun, challenging, and realistic. He stresses that the gym is a non-competitive environment, and the only person you are competing with is yourself. Many people look at celebrities and envy their 6
ability to afford a personal trainer to attain their fitness goals. Undeniably working with a personal trainer is one of the most successful ways to improve your health and fitness. Unlike many gym owners, Russel Favel is determined to make fitness affordable and provides very reasonable rates for all of his programs as he feels “fitness shouldn’t be a financial burden.” The boot camps are both mentally and physically challenging through full body strengthening exercises, and cardio activities that can be reached by all fitness levels. Spinning classes will take you on an indoor journey through hills, flats, mountain peaks and sprints. These high-energy sessions are accompanied by motivating music, and Russel Favel promises indoor cycling will leave you “covered in sweat and smiling ear to ear.” He decided to offer yoga to complement the gym’s high intensity workouts. Classes include a variety of postures with a meditative flow and an emphasis on breathing, alignment and safety. This candlelit class helps you find inner peace. RSF is housed in the same business park as Cartwheels, The Arts Connection and Renaissance Kids Early Learning Centres.

Multi-tasking Steveston mums in particular take advantage of this convenient location to drop off their children and squeeze in a workout of their own. Russel Favel says his “clients are the best” and he is motivated to help them attain their goals. As much as he receives accolades for inspiring and motivating his clients, he derives satisfaction from what they give back to him. Erinn Bryan, owner of O’Hare’s GastroPub is a devoted RSF client. She says, “Russel is a great motivator, very serious about fitness and also a lot of fun. I am addicted to going to RSF. The boot camp workouts are always very challenging and the results are awesome. I’ve met some really amazing people and I’m delighted to have boot camp as part of my work/life balance.” Indeed Russel Favel verifies that the gym is very much a community where people are made to feel welcome and a place where they look forward to catching up with friends. The Favel family moved to Canada from their homeland of South Africa when Russel Favel was six years old. After a brief stint in Vancouver they settled in Richmond and have called the area home ever since. Always industrious, from an early age Russel Favel had summer jobs and chuckles when he reveals that his first job was in Grade 9 at Pajo’s cutting potatoes. Not long after graduating from Steveston High he earned his certification to become a personal trainer. Starting with boot camps and word of mouth marketing, his business began to snowball as
friends told their friends. Subsequently, social media has become a great communication tool for RSF devotees. With his vision and entrepreneurial spirit, Russel Favel (26) is mature beyond his years. He is quick to thank his parents for his work ethic and credits his father Mike Favel for his exemplary commitment to fitness. From the time he was young he recalls seeing his dad run marathons and participate in triathlons and Iron Man competitions. He points out that his father is his role model. When Russel Favel was in Grade 7 his father’s true “fighter mentality” exhibited itself when he was diagnosed with the first of three bouts of cancer. Mike Favel has been completely clear of cancer for seven years. Russel Favel says, “seeing someone who was so strong battle cancer for so many years, and being so resilient, taught me and gave me motivation for everything that I do in my life today.”

His mother, Sandra Favel, helps with business decisions, and assists with some of the gym’s administrative work. Russel Favel calls her “his rock.” When problems arise she imparts words of wisdom and offers solutions. He says, “If I am still not able to work it out, then it’s probably just the way it was meant to be. I like to believe I have inherited my mom’s emotional and mental balance, which allows me to keep going, even through those tough times.”
8
Although Russel Favel has very little free time beyond his business, he continues to enjoy his favourite sport, soccer. He also makes it a priority to spend time with his girlfriend, Michelle Kwieton, his sister and brother inlaw, Teri and Justin Wachtel, and his newborn nephew, Hudson. Judging by his commitment and passion for his career and family, he seems to have found the perfect balance.

in his father’s footsteps, and is now one of city’s top trainers to celebrities and professional athletes.
Another source of inspiration is his uncle, Martin Smith, who formerly owned and ran one of the biggest gyms in Johannesburg. He was one of the first people to bring the whole “fitness lifestyle” to the gym, with the swimming pool, circuit classes, and aerobics and has provided Russel Favel with many helpful ideas and tips. Martin Smith is a friend of Jon Jon Park, the CEO and founder of Legacy Gym in Los Angeles. Legacy Gym is named in honour of Jon Jon Park’s father, Reg Park, who was a professional body builder and held the title of Mr. Universe three times. It was Reg Park who inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger to pursue his career in bodybuilding. Jon Jon Park emigrated to L.A. from South Africa to follow
While Russel Favel has not met Jon Jon Park, he hopes to, “so I can let him know how much of an impact he has had on me. Jon Jon's pictures and his father’s pictures are one of the first things you see when you walk into RSF gym. I use them as a reminder that hard work and genuinely caring for your clients and what you believe in will get you furthest. It is not about the equipment you have, it’s about you. The equipment doesn't do the work, you do.” It is Russel Favel’s authenticity and ability to learn life lessons at such an early age that distinguishes him from some young entrepreneurs who are driven by monetary success. While he is certainly ambitious, his ultimate quest is to help as many people as he can by bringing them happiness and helping them feel good about themselves.

photos by Sandra Steier following in her father’s footsteps. In fact, she laughs when she says she wanted to be original, and considered teaching or biology as possible career options, however she soon came to realize that dentistry combined all of the things she loved. In 2001 Michele Nielsen graduated from McGill University and in 2002 she began working with Doug Nielsen. In 2004 she spent an additional year training in forensic dentistry, which she finds fascinating but she is so busy with work and home life that she has yet to pursue this area of interest.
I have driven by Steveston Smiles countless times yet until I met with Dr. Michele Nielsen I had never been inside the building. Her father, Dr. Doug Nielsen, had the facility built when he was a new graduate from UBC Dental School, and opened his practice in February 1973. The first thing I noticed was the open concept architecture, which conjured up images of a stacked beehive. The building houses four separate dental practices (which make up the Steveston Dental Group) including Steveston Smiles. Growing up with a dentist as a father one would think that Michele Nielsen (to avoid confusion they go by Dr. Michele and Dr. Doug) knew that dentistry was her calling. Throughout her teenage years she assisted in the office, yet she did not dream of 14
In April 2012 Michele Nielsen purchased the business and Doug Nielsen continues to work alongside her. Three dental hygienists, three assistants, and two front desk staff all assist in making this busy practice thrive. Steveston Smiles takes pride in offering a caring family environment with dentists who listen and have the talent and skill to achieve the results you’re looking for - whether it’s a simple procedure, or a life changing transformation. What is it like working with her father who, she jokes, now reports to her? Michele Nielsen describes Doug Nielsen as “amazing.” She says he is her mentor, and that they value learning from each other. Doug Nielsen conducts many of the root canal appointments while Michele Nielsen sees many of the younger patients, and admits this is one of her fortes. This is not surprising as she exudes a genuine warmth and compassion that children must gravitate towards. She has two young sons and radiates a maternal streak. In 2003, the B.C. Dental Association launched a campaign recommending that children

benefit, digital radiography dramatically decreases the amount of radiation required for an x-ray. Clinicians wear tiny ‘microscopes’ on their glasses, or loupes as they are called in the dental field, which enable them to get a better view of your oral condition, and patients can see the images magnified on the computer screen (no more trying to decipher a tiny film negative). Believing that dental anxiety should not be a barrier to getting dental work done, Steveston Smiles offers nitrous oxide sedation free of charge. Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is used for its calming effect. It can help to relax you, ease your fear and make you feel more comfortable during your dental treatment. visit the dentist six months after their first tooth or at one year of age. Since this campaign commenced Steveston Smiles has offered complimentary orientation visits for children under the age of three. This visit includes an exam by Dr. Doug or Dr. Michele, a tour of the office as well as a baby bag of goodies to help care for your child’s teeth. For older children a visit to the toy chest is always a post appointment highlight.
Beginning in 2007 The College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. began allowing dentists to perform Botox. This makes sense as dentists know the facial muscles very well. Michele Nielsen explains it is a service that some patients appreciate while they are already at a dental appointment, while other clients come in simply for this treatment.
In 2006 Steveston Smiles began offering Invisalign braces, a modern approach to straightening teeth. These virtually invisible custom-made aligners gradually and gently shift teeth into place. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. Have you dreamt of having a crown completed in a single visit? CEREC is a dental restoration product that allows a dental practitioner to produce an indirect ceramic dental restoration using a variety of computer-assisted technologies. With CEREC, teeth can be restored in a single sitting, for natural looking, tooth coloured crowns. No impressions or temporaries are required. You can relax while you watch the computer mill your new restoration before your eyes. Michele Nielsen showed me the fascinating digital x-ray technology they use. This high-tech diagnostic tool can help detect tiny problems and prevent them from growing larger. An added October | November 2013 • www.StevestonInsider.com

Michele Nielsen enjoys seeing generations of families come to the office. Recently they found a photo album from the 1980’s of “No Cavity Club Parties” containing pictures of Steveston Smiles patients, and today Michele Nielsen works on some of their children’s teeth. She says, “It is so rewarding to have a true family practice.” Playing a role in changing people’s perceptions about dental appointments is another satisfying aspect of her job. Michele Nielsen has treated patients who for years avoided getting any dental work done yet “with time, patience, empathy and compassion we have been able to change their experience and restore their mouths and dramatically improve their oral health.” The dental office has created a number of clubs with gift certificate incentives to encourage participation in health care and promote overall wellness. The Happy Smile Club is for 2 to 8 year olds. Every child has their picture taken and placed on the Happy Smile board. The Junior Achievers Club (9 to 12 year olds) and Teens to the Top (13 to 19 years old) encourages these age groups to practice a high standard of preventive dental

health care. The Referral & Rewards Club thanks clients for introducing new patients to the clinic. Steveston Smiles takes a proactive approach to tooth decay by offering all ghouls and goblins a very attractive post-Halloween offer. Donate your candy during their 3rd Annual Sweet Swap (between November 1 – 5) and in exchange you will receive an entry ballot to win an iPad mini. Now that is sweet! I
Shopping Locally
by Sarah Gordon I will shout this proclamation through a megaphone – I love supporting independent retailers. Yes, I may be a bit biased, being the co-owner of a small Steveston business, however I have always loved to shop locally. My family laughs at me; I am drawn like a moth to a flame to historic villages with funky shops and cafes. I suppose I didn’t stand a chance as I grew up in a tiny waterfront town with historic brick buildings and its very own Main Street.
This past summer my family travelled to the Sunshine Coast to go camping and en route stopped in Gibsons. Much to my husband’s dismay (in his quest to get away from it all) I am always seized by the urge to pop into stores when we pass through a quaint town (and our daughters are all too eager to join me). Like a bloodhound, I can sniff out a good shop a mile away. In the land of The Beachcombers we found a wonderfully tasteful store called Whimsy that I easily could have spent an hour in shopping and conversing with the delightful owner. My mission on these pit stops is to find original businesses loaded with character. I enjoy talking to the proprietors who are almost always nice folk, and gleaning a snap shot of the area through their eyes. They are excellent sources for revealing the best things to do in the vicinity and they make you feel genuinely welcome. The same holds true for restaurants. We attempt to discover where the locals hang out, and it is these spots that etch memories of great visits to real life small town communities. Main streets are generally 24
where you find these establishments, and I tip my hat to all of the entrepreneurs who invest in their community and offer residents and visitors their creativity, devotion and the incredibly hard work that goes into running a small business. Earlier this year we visited The Old Town Bakery in Ladysmith, which nicely fit within the criteria of historic village near the water. I was so enthused by this business that I stocked up and brought loaves of bread home to freeze. We dined on some mighty fine soup and sandwiches in the warmth of the bakery with enticing display cases laden with goodies. The Ladysmith Downtown Business Association is working hard to help local businesses develop and flourish. Their website states, “Don’t drive past us, drive in and say hi.” This has become the destiny of many small towns that are slightly off the grid (i.e. the highway). Ladysmith is well worth a visit if you have not made the short trip up the hill. At spring break we went to Salmon Arm and I am still dreaming about the pies from the Shuswap Pie Company. Oh my! We had chicken pot pie for dinner followed by peach pie for dessert. The calorie filled indulgences left us feeling full of home baked happiness. Also in Salmon Arm, I fell in love with a store called Bella Interiors and Redesign. The exterior of this building is beautiful, and it was hard to drag me out of the store with its tasteful collection of art and furniture. Closer to home, I applaud the Steveston business community for the dedication they offer us all. These businesses play a vital role in shaping Steveston village and making it such a desirable place to live. As a board member of the Steveston Merchants Association I would like to thank all of the loyal customers who choose to shop locally. With the holiday season rapidly approaching, enjoy the local flavours and down-home feeling of dining and shopping in our charming village.

FIRST TIME HOMEBUYER “Tracy greeted me with a big smile on her face and welcomed me into her office like a friend. She explained the pre-approval process thoroughly, walked me through my budget options and throughout the entire process, she ‘held my hand’ and ensured that I felt comfortable and educated. Tracy advocated for me with the lenders and ensured that I got my mortgage with the right bank. Tracy thoroughly explained the payment options and made sure that I was making the right decision. As a first time home buyer, having Tracy’s help took away a lot of stress from me. I feel happy with my home and the mortgage that I have. I absolutely recommend Riverside Mortgage Group to any prospective home buyer. I will definitely return as a customer when the time comes for my next home purchase”. ~ Natasha B

D-Original Sausage Haus by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Sometimes some advance research is required (wink) to prepare for interviews with business owners. On a sunny Friday afternoon my youngest daughter and I headed to D-Original Sausage Haus to purchase some artisan sausages so that I would know of what I speak. The first thing you notice when you enter the shop (besides the well stocked display cases) is the beautiful brick wall backdrop. The shop was momentarily quiet when we arrived, and I had a brief opportunity to talk to Jens Hertha’s (owner) extremely knowledgeable employee Teri Meyer. Within minutes the space filled with eager customers wanting to stock up on provisions for the weekend.
Hertha moved to Vancouver in 2005 from his small hometown of Annweiler, Germany (population approximately 7,000). His background is in banking, however he was ready to start a new career, and came to Canada filled with optimism. As a new immigrant he found it extremely difficult to find a job and after six months was prepared to return to Germany. As a last resort he decided to return to the world of banking, where he worked for another five years.
Being Steveston, where everyone knows everyone, I ran into a friend who is a ‘regular’ and he shared some excellent recommendations. We happily departed with some Bierbeisser to snack on as we strolled around Steveston, as well as some sausages for the next day. 34
October | November 2013 • www.StevestonInsider.com
He quickly adapted to Canadian culture, and through a fellow Canucks fan, Thorsten Stock, Hertha was introduced to Stock’s father (Drews Driessen) who is a German fifth-generation sausage maker. Driessen’s business, D-Original Sausage Company, crafts smoked and aircured sausages using traditional methods that do not require the vast amounts of salts and sulphurs which are often used in commercial sausage making. Hertha was surprised to find the authentic taste of home and was interested in purchasing sausages, only to discover they were produced exclusively for specialty commercial locations. Undaunted, and as a true sausage connoisseur, Hertha felt it was his duty to bring these culinary marvels to the masses. In August 2011, he and Stock planned a storefront for D-Original Sausage Haus. As a Steveston resident Hertha felt the community was the right fit for this specialty shop. D-Original Sausage Haus opened in February 2012. He was cautious and kept his banking job for the first three months to ensure the shop would be well received. It has been a resounding success.
He is eager to reveal ‘secrets’ people may not know about the all-natural pork products. They do not contain preservatives, nitrates or fillers, and they are gluten-free. The sausages

are also much lower in fat than commercially produced ones. Hertha reveals that five of his customers were former vegetarians and have converted to eating meat.
The neighbouring Sweet Spot bakes demibaguettes for D-Original Sausage Haus daily. The rye bread and pretzels originate from Pohl’s, a German bakery in Burnaby. Hertha
With the success of his small business is Hertha looking to expand? With a young family (two little boys) and his wife who has a busy career with the City of Richmond, Hertha feels that it is too soon to open a second location, however he has many ideas brewing to further enhance his business. In the near future he will offer party trays and catering, and sandwiches will be available. With Christmas not far off, he is planning to sell pre-made gift baskets stocked with delicacies from the shop. In addition to BBQ sausages (including a large variety of bratwurst), the shop sells smoked sausages, prosciutto, bacon, air cured salami, smoked salami, sandwich meat, ham, bacon, pancetta, air-dried salami, spreads and pate. In addition there is a good selection of condiments such as curry ketchup (an item people are talking about with gusto), mustard, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and crackers. Initially D-Original Sausage Haus did not carry cheese, however his customers demanded it, and to complete the happy marriage of meat and cheese, breads are also available. 36

sausages such as the classic Toulouse garlic and black pepper. Hertha derives great satisfaction working with his customers. He loves his job and believes in what he sells. He says it is most gratifying to see the “mmm” face when people sample the products.
supplies sausages for Bean and Beyond’s breakfast bowls, and works collaboratively with their Oktoberfest promotion every Friday throughout October. Hertha points out that during this time Bean and Beyond offers a great deal on bratwurst in a bun, accompanied by a pretzel and a Russell Maerzen Oktoberfest beer. In addition, Hertha supplies his products to Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant, O’Hare’s GastroPub, and Tapenade Bistro.
As for his thoughts about Steveston, he always enjoyed the scenic location, however after owning his business his perception changed. He discovered that Steveston is very much like Annweiler, where Hertha says everyone knows each other and helps out, and he now feels truly “at home” in this village on the Fraser River.
Hertha’s personal favourite is BBQ sausages and in particular he gravitates to “old world”

Girls’ Night Out by Sarah Gordon Ladies, grab your calendar, program your smartphone, do whatever it may take to save the date. Thursday November 28th is the highly anticipated 3rd annual Girls’ Night Out (GNO) in Steveston. Sponsored by the proud members of the Steveston Merchants Association, this event is destined to be wildly popular again. Round up your pals, your mum, your sister and your office friends for an evening of cocktails, appetizers and power Christmas shopping – last year’s participants reminisced about this night for months afterwards and can’t wait for its return. Merchants often overhear mothers say that they would like to return to a store without their child in tow, so that they can concentrate fully; while women of all ages feel limited to shopping on the weekends, and crave time to be out on the town past 6pm. Designed for girls who want to have fun, this is an evening where Steveston transforms into a vibrant night-time stomping ground! The Steveston Merchants Association hosts fabulous community events including the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl, Trick-orTreating in Steveston Village, and Christmas in Steveston Village. All of these events are 40
extremely popular and well loved by families; however the SMA felt that an opportunity for women to celebrate within their community was missing. This festive pre-Christmas shopping and dining extravaganza as a winwin opportunity for Steveston women and for SMA member restaurants and businesses. Women are invited to visit SMA member businesses to shop, dine, connect with friends, old and new, and celebrate the upcoming holiday season. SMA member restaurants and stores will offer special incentives GNO shoppers, with many shops offering a gift to accompany a minimum purchase. Photographer Leighton Matthews will be out once again taking photos of the event courtesy of Steveston Insider. Now, what about your significant other? He can either stay home with the kids, or book a babysitter and head over to the designated ‘Man Cave’ at O’Hare’s GastroPub. More details will be revealed soon. Visit www.exploresteveston.com for a full list of participating SMA member businesses and stay tuned for Girls’ Night Out news flashes on Facebook and Twitter. Contact your social network and spread the word, Girls’ Night Out in Steveston is back!
