The holiday season is nearly here! Soon, neighbourhoods will glow with lights, homes will sparkle with seasonal decor, and the search for the perfect gift will begin.
October brought plenty of excitement to the village. Congratulations to the winners of the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl. The Steveston Merchants Association awarded prizes to Steveston Village Maternity, The Maple Residences, and Stars of Tomorrow. Halloween was also a highlight; Costumed trick-ortreaters filled the village to collect treats from participating merchants. Check out photos on pages 32-35.
Girls’ Night Out on November 21 is a fabulous opportunity to get a head start on Christmas shopping while enjoying a fun-filled evening with friends.
Throughout December, holiday magic abounds in Steveston Village. The events planned for Winter in the Village are sure to raise your Christmas spirit meter! This festive series is a collaboration between Tourism Richmond, the Steveston Merchants Association, and the City of Richmond.
The festivities kick off on December 1 with horse-drawn carriage rides, adding a nostalgic touch as they circle the village for the enjoyment of riders and spectators alike. The annual Christmas Classic Car Cruise returns with classic cars decked out in holiday decor.

Santa arrives on Sunday, December 8. Capture the magical moment when Santa’s boat comes into view, and then visit the Gulf of Georgia Cannery for photos with Santa. The Cannery also features beautifully decorated Christmas trees, each with a unique theme, sponsored by local merchants and community groups.
Charming holiday window displays highlight the creativity of local businesses, while oversized ornaments are perfect spots to take a selfie. Head to one of Steveston’s craft fairs to find unique gifts while supporting local artisans.

No holiday season in Steveston would be complete without Alex Sagert, who provides music for many of the village’s major events. Through Steveston Sound & Stage, Alex delivers the perfect audiovisual experience, whether for intimate gatherings or large-scale celebrations. He also offers DJ services.
Updates: Mr. Gold’s has moved to Lavenderland, Mary’s Ice Cream has closed, and Sally’s Homemade Ice Cream is now open.

STEVESTON TRAM MUSEUM: Travel Back in Time

The Steveston Tram Museum is a wonderful place to take a trip back to the past at any time of the year, but the holiday season offers additional incentives to pay a visit and climb aboard the tram car.
The museum showcases Tram Car 1220, one of the original trams that ran on Richmond’s Interurban rail system. Today, the immaculately restored tram car and the building that houses it allow visitors to experience authentic Interurban rail travel and learn about early 20th-century transportation.
The building’s design reflects a blend of heritage influence and modern necessity. The gable roof form and wood exterior cladding are reminiscent of the original Steveston Station, which once stood almost on the same footprint as the museum. The building is temperature and humidity-controlled to house Richmond’s largest artifact, Tram Car 1220, and to be as accessible as possible. The museum
is built around the original tracks upon which the Interurban trams of the BC Electric Railway once ran.
Historically, trams bridged the gap between the age of the horse and the car. They were a fast, reliable, regular, and affordable way of getting to places where people wanted to go. Steveston was the most developed area on Lulu Island when the trams started operating. Over time, the rail line acted as a backbone for the body of the Richmond community to build out from.
Visitors enjoy exploring the exhibits representing the life of tram commuters and Richmond residents in the early to mid-1900s.
While exploring the tram, you will hear the original sounds of Tram Cars 1220 and 1222 as they zipped along the streets of Richmond. Take a seat and enjoy the passing sounds of chugging wheels, air horn blasts, and the motor whine of the car as you imagine the ride along the Lulu Island Line to Steveston.
Hearing stories from people who rode the trams is always a highlight for Tram staff.
Museum Coordinator Gabrielle Sharp says, “A visitor told us he was four years old when his mother would put him on the tram by himself! The kind conductor would look after him and make sure he got off at the correct stop. Can you imagine doing that these days on the Canada Line?”
She adds, “Other visitors have told us about their memories of riding the trams as children and how the woven rattan seats were very prickly on the back of their bare legs!”
The Winter Tram events are not to be missed.
On December 1 at 4:30 p.m., gather in the public plaza in front of the Steveston Tram for a holiday tree lighting event to kick off Steveston’s Winter in the Village.
Local creator Peter Grant’s beautifully detailed heritage buildings constructed from LEGO will be featured in the museum’s front window.
A special holiday scavenger hunt and a daily search for the museum’s toy pig, Hamm, will be offered throughout December. A cozy reading corner is also stocked with transportation-themed books in multiple languages.
Photo ops abound! Children are invited to try on the blue conductor hats and jackets and pose in front of the Steveston Tram Car 1220.
Librarians from the Steveston Branch of the Richmond Public Library will read the magical classic The Polar Express onboard the tram car. This year’s dates are Saturday, December 7, and Sunday, December 15. Storytime will take place at set times in the afternoon. STEVESTON SOUND & STAGE: Bringing Audio and Visual Dreams to Life

Christmas is drawing near, and with it comes a tradition many Stevestonites eagerly await — the Steveston Santa Claus Parade. With floats and other decorated vehicles, costumed mascots, seasonal music and much more, the merry parade winds through the village, spreading joy on Christmas Eve. People bundle up and watch outside their houses while others stand along the parade route to take in the magic.
The popular event was cancelled during the pandemic, and this is when Alex Sagert, the owner and operator of Steveston Sound & Stage, stepped in. A lifelong Steveston resident, Alex was committed to keeping the well-loved tradition alive.
He rented a trailer, decorated it with large Christmas-themed blowups and lights, and continued collecting donations for the Richmond Food Bank for three consecutive
years. Once things started returning to normal, he contacted the original parade organizers. Since some had moved away, he took over the parade with the support of the Richmond Firefighters Union. Alex is hoping to bring the event back again this year. Follow his social media for updates.
Alex says, “Last year, we brought the full parade back, and the turnout was incredible—it was amazing to see the community come together again!”
While attending McMath Secondary, Alex became interested in sound and lighting. He was the school’s sound and lighting director for all its theatre productions and events.
“From there, I started doing small events here and there, and eventually, I decided to start Steveston Sound & Stage so I could take on more projects and contribute to the community. Steveston has such amazing traditions, and I really enjoy playing a part in helping them continue and thrive.”

Alex has worked on various events, from local community gatherings including the Steveston Block Party, Winter in the Village, the Christmas dog walk and classic car cruise. He has also been part of corporate parties, high school reunions, dry after grads, weddings, and Oval Community Day. On a larger scale, he has worked on events such as the 2023 Wheelchair Curling Championship and the Invictus Games 2025 "I AM" installation unveiling at Jack Poole Plaza.
The holiday season and summer months are especially busy for Alex’s business.
He says, “We get a lot of bookings for holiday events, weddings, and other celebrations during those times. With so many people planning gatherings and celebrations, it’s always a lively period. If anyone is considering booking for those times, I recommend reaching out early to secure a spot.”
Working in this industry, Alex witnesses and plays a part in many memorable moments. During last year’s Salmon Festival, he had the opportunity to be involved with the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association parade float.
“We set up large speakers, subwoofers, and smoke machines on a 53’ tractor-trailer, creating a giant party on wheels as we rolled through historic Steveston Village. It was so much fun, especially since I remember looking forward to this parade every year while growing up in the village. To top it all off, we won the Gillnetter Award for best sports team float! It was a memorable experience, and I loved being part of such a vibrant community celebration.”
Alex is also an active member of the Steveston Merchants Association. He got involved two years ago to contribute to local events and support the SMA’s great work in helping Steveston's businesses thrive.
“This year, I was honoured to be elected to the board, and I'm excited to continue working with the association to keep the community vibrant and connected.”
“I have lived in Steveston my entire life, so it’s always been home for me. I love this tightknit community and its rich history. What really excites me is finding ways to connect people through fun events that bring everyone together. It’s a special place, and I feel lucky to give back to a community that’s been such a big part of my life.”

• Able to obtain RCMP reliability status security clearance;
• Have no business or employment that may cause a conflict of interest;
