LET'S TALK ABOUT IT!

EPILEPSY AWARENESS

EPILEPSY IS THE MOST COMMON SERIOUS BRAIN DISORDER WORLDWIDE WITH NO AGE, RACIAL, SOCIAL CLASS, NATIONAL OR GEOGRAPHIC BOUNDARIES, YET MUCH OF THE PUBLIC KNOWS SO LITTLE ABOUT THE DISORDER. HELP US CHANGE THAT. 8

EPILEPSY BY THE NUMBERS

65 MILLION

People around the world who have epilepsy

T

here

are

over 3.4 m i l l i o n people in the United States who have been diagnosed with epilepsy, which makes it more common than many other serious chronic diseases that directly affect the brain, such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.

So it is surprising that there are still so many misconceptions that surround this condition. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge can lead to the death or injury of a person who has a seizure because it could prevent them from getting the medical help that they need in time. Because of this, November has been designated as National Epilepsy Awareness month in order to spread the following facts about the condition:

WHAT IS A SEIZURE?

When most people think of a seizure, they envision a scene from the movies, which displays a person thrashing violently on the floor. But even grand mal seizures, which are considered to be the most severe type of seizures, don't really make someone act like

3.4 MILLION Epilepsy is more common than Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy and Autism combined.

this. That is because a seizure is simply miscommunication between the electrical signals that are sent from the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Sometimes, it can occur because of a dysfunction in just one small part of the brain too though. When this happens, a person's thinking and movements are affected for several minutes until the areas of the brain are able to communicate properly again.

WHAT ARE SYMPTOMS?

THE

The symptoms that a person can get from this condition depend on the type of epilepsy that they have. For some, it

might appear that they are staring into space with a blank expression on their face. Others might lose consciousness while their limbs jerk back and forth. Another type can even cause a person to wander aimlessly, unaware of their surroundings. This can be especially dangerous because the person often has no recollection of where they are going, so they could potentially be hit by a car or become injured if they trip over any objects that are in the area.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER RISKS OF A SEIZURE?

A seizure usually only lasts for a few minutes. Afterwards, a person might feel tired, but they are responsive and able to move on their own. Occasionally, a seizure will continue for over five minutes though. This is dangerous because of the impact that it has on many of the body's functions, which essentially shut down during this time. If a person doesn't get immediate help, they can die or suffer injuries to their brain or body. In fact, over 50,000 people die from seizures each year for this very reason.

is important that alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs are avoided entirely because they all have an impact on brain function and chemistry. Stress needs to be reduced as much as possible too. Most importantly though, a person who has a condition that causes a seizure needs to see their doctor regularly to ensure that they get the right medications and treatment.

WHAT MEDICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE TO A PERSON WITH EPILEPSY?

One new medication that was just approved by the FDA that works well for this purpose is called Epidiolex. It is made of cannabidiol (CBD) that is extracted from the cannabis sativa plant, which is more commonly known as marijuana. Unlike the drug that is still considered illegal in many states, it contains no THC so those who take it won't feel intoxicated or “high in any way. Because of this, it has been approved for children as young as two years old.

IS A SEIZURE TREATABLE OR PREVENTABLE?

Luckily, a seizure can often be prevented. First of all, it

HIGHWAY ALERT

HOW TO TAKE CAUTION AT DRUG CHECKPOINTS By Barbara Kibbey Wagner, Esq., Criminal Defense Attorney

H

ave you ever driven on I-95 in Palm Beach or Martin County and seen electronic signs saying “Prepare to Stop: Drug Checkpoint Ahead”? For the past few years, law enforcement in South Florida, like the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast, has conducted fake “Drug Checkpoints” nabbing the drivers who get off at the preceding exits looking to avoid a search. Unfortunately, these fake “checkpoints” are completely legal and continue to happen every few months. But if you know your rights, you may be able to avoid an arrest or harsh penalties. Under Florida law, DUI checkpoints are legal, but actually conducting “Drug Checkpoints” are illegal.

16

PALMBEACHCANNABIS.COM | WINTER 2018

So law enforcement uses a ruse of a sign stating “Drug Checkpoint” to see which drivers try to avoid a search by getting off at the nearby exits. Drivers can be stopped once they commit basic traffic infractions like running a stop sign or a tint violation. Then, law enforcement has K9 units (like German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois) ready and waiting to do perimeter searches of vehicles. Once the dogs alert, police then have “probable cause” to do a search of the vehicle, and make arrests for any contraband or drugs inside. So how can you avoid these false checkpoints, what contraband will get you in the most hot water, and what should you do when you are stopped?

CONCENTRATE ON THE ROAD, & KEEP CONCENTRATES AT HOME

In Florida, possession of twenty grams or less of marijuana (in plant/bud form) is a first degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail. However, in Palm Beach and Martin County, for first time offenders, you may be offered a Diversion program like Drug Court or classes, and once complete, the charge may be dropped. If you possess more than 20 grams or a THC concentrate, such as tincture, wax or oil, this is considered a Third Degree felony, punishable by up to five years prison. While again, first time offenders may be offered a lengthier and more involved diversion program, others will have to be placed on probation or even in jail if they possess enough or with other items that the State Attorney’s Officethinks that they have the intent to sell or distribute their goods, such as a ledger, notebook, large cash funds, or items to package. In short, before your road trip, pack lightly. Keep any vape pens that may even have THC residue at home. The dogs can smell everything, and a field test kit will test positive for even the most minor of wax buildup.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Know the days of the week that you

may use I-95. Many of these tricky drug interdictions are done during the weeks of music festivals or when the police know there may be lots of traffic, like Thursdays, Fridays and weekends. So timing is everything. If you see a “Drug Checkpoint” sign on I-95, just keep driving normally. If you get off at the exit in order to avoid the checkpoint, law enforcement has teams of drug task units, drug dogs and road patrol ready and waiting to pull over your car for any minor infraction.

a red flag for law officers. Also ditch the dark tint, bumper stickers, license plate frames (although legal, some police still do not know this), flashy rims, and anything else that would be cause for a raised eyebrow or a stop on your vehicle.

DRIVE CAREFULLY

Sounds obvious, but do not commit any traffic infractions, and especially do not roll through any stop signs, especially if you get off at a nearby exit. Use your blinkers and do not speed. If you are stopped, pull over immediately, and have your driver license and registration ready to go.

DO NOT TALK

KEEP A LOW PROFILE

It is terrible to say, but law officers are humans, too ,and they have a job to do. They may subconsciously “profile” a car that looks suspicious. Just stop vaping or Juuling while driving-it’s

Just stop talking, please. This is every criminal defense lawyer’s pet peeve. You may have had a case we could have thrown out, but you either confessed or acted unprofessionally that got you in more trouble. Just state your biographical information to the officer. Do not consent to a search of your car. Ask if you are free to leave once the police have completed writing you a traffic ticket. If questioning continues, ask for a lawyer, and then be silent. And be polite!

DO NOT BUY IN BULK AND CAUTION WITH KRATOM POWDER

Some prosecutors, specifically in Martin County, discern anything over a half pound of marijuana indicative of marijuana to be sold and not for personal use. Why does this matter? Florida law holds that a simple misdemeanor possession of marijuana (20 grams or less) or third degree felony possession (more than twenty grams and under 25 pounds) without any evidence of sale or intent to sell would qualify a person for a drug diversion if they qualify. Recently, Circuit Court judges in Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie Counties have denied people entering drug court diversion for marijuana where they possessed a large quantity, such as more than half a pound. In those cases, law enforcement testified as “experts” that the amount of marijuana was so much that it could not have been for personal use. Thus, it may not be wise to buy in bulk. Similarly, there have been cases in South Florida where someone’s Kratom powder field-tested positive for THC, and a person was wrongfully arrested. They had to hire an attorney, post bond, and then spend time and money getting the powder retested through an official lab in order to get charges dropped. Thus, it may not be worth the

18

hassle to travel with a powder meant to destress.

THE DOGS ALERTED, YOU WERE ARRESTED, NOW WHAT?

Do not make any statements, ask for a lawyer, and call a highly experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. If you acted professionally and intelligently, then you may have a fighting chance. Good luck!

MATT L STRONG, POSITIVE & NEVER GIVING UP IT IS HARD TO COMPREHEND THAT ONE SEEMINGLY HARMLESS DIVE COULD RESULT IN A LIFE-ALTERING INJURY, BUT IT CAN. MATT LUCAS SHARES HIS STORY. As you can imagine, summers are the best time of year for teenagersschool's out, lots of free time, sleeping in late, fun with friends, summer camp, etc. 2004 was one of those awesome summers for me. I was an avid sports enthusiast at 15 years old growing up in Jupiter, FL. Like any other young teenager living on the water, we were out on boats tubing, wakeboarding and picking up friends to go to the sandbar. It was another sunny Friday, July 30th to be exact, when my life took a major turn. Four of my best friends and I headed back to one of our houses on the Loxahatchee River to grab a quick snack and to hydrate. We were playing music, swimming in the pool and jumping off the dock. It was my turn, I dove head first into the river and instantly everything in 20

LUCAS my body went numb. I couldn't move my arms or legs and I was sinking. My buddy Paul was a lifeguard and he quickly jumped in and lifted me up to the surface. Dillon called 911 and my parents. I was airlifted to the hospital where I was later diagnosed as a C5-6 quadriplegic due to a spinal cord injury. Whoa, talk about getting hit with a ton of bricks. I would then spend the next five months at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta Georgia, which is one of the top spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation centers in the nation. In recent studies, there are about 17,500 spinal cord injuries each year. Doesn’t seem like much with 327 million people in America, but in 2004 I was a part of that number. My time spent in rehab was a rigorous experience.

The outstanding, caring staff at the Shepherd Center taught me how to do all my daily tasks, in a new way. I made many friends who also had similar injuries and we pushed each other to do better every day. After coming home, I continued high school and outpatient physical therapy at Jupiter Medical Center. And thanks to donations to my account on HelpHopeLive, I was able to afford specialty

some sensations and muscle use and can proudly say I am getting stronger every day. In more recent years, I have been having more intense muscle spasms throughout my body. Sometimes they are so bad I come close to flying out of my wheelchair. It was becoming a struggle mentally and physically, so I started researching remedies that could help my body and mind relax. Someone suggested CBD oil. If you aren’t familiar with CBD oil, it’s a natural

this oil and instantly felt calmer. My spasticity was decreased, and my anxiety had left the building. After being on muscle relaxers for too many years with little relief, I am thankful that CBD worked! I sleep better, I am able to participate in more daily activities and have had zero side effects. Seeing this oil worked so well I tried incorporating medical marijuana on occasion. Cannabis was an instant reliever. Using it throughout the day kept my spams away. I had multiple hours of relief and my appetite was in full swing. The combination of both has immensely improved my overall wellbeing. Today I'm 29. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, going to sporting events, working on my business, traveling, and keeping myself in healthy shape. This past year I have been living a plant-based lifestyle. My body mass index (BMI) has decreased, I’ve

HOW TO AVOID A DIVING INJURY • The best way is to ALWAYS enter the water feet first. • Never dive into the shallow end of a pool • Know that there are often hidden objects in lakes, rivers, etc. • Avoid alcohol when you’re swimming • Realize that when you dive, your body is a torpedo cutting through the water and that water may not protect you from a severe impact. • Just because you used to dive somewhere does not make it safe. You may have grown and underwater surfaces may have shifted. • Some injuries are caused by hitting the far side of a pool or swimming hole. Depth is not the only thing to be concerned about. KERRI PARKER In search of a healthier alternative to chemotherapy and radiation to treat the brain cancer which has returned nearly 5 years from her initial diagnosis, model Kerri Parker is making global headlines with her choice to use cannabis.

F

irst diagnosed with brain cancer in October 2013, Kerri Parker, the former Playboy model, Ms. UK, and Hollywood stunt artist, has never shied away from publicly sharing her battle for health. Kerri has made it her mission to share her story and bring awareness to the disease. This September, almost 5 years removed from her initial diagnosis and brain surgery, the 34 year-old is once again thrust into the global spotlight after learning that her cancer has returned requiring further treatment. Now Kerri is in a fight for her life but will not be combating her disease with the normal chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Doctors recommended that Kerri undergo up to 12 rounds of chemotherapy to attempt to eradicate the cancer, but also told her that virtually no patients are able to withstand the full 12 treatments. She argues that the 12 cycles of chemotherapy doctors recommend she undergo would only serve to make her sicker and prevent her from engaging in the day to day of her thriving business. Instead, Kerri is putting her faith in cannabis, seeing it as a healthier alternative to treat and even eradicate her cancer. Kerri credits her mother with first introducing her to the benefits of using cannabis to treat cancer after tirelessly researching the topic during Kerri’s 5 years in remission, in case the cancer ever returned. Together they learned of several instances of people ostensibly curing cancer using cannabis as the primary means of treatment. With this information, there was no doubt in Kerri’s mind that she would be better off using a healthier and more natural approach to her treatment. Kerri says that since her initial brain surgery, she has been training in martial arts and sticking to a healthy diet, leaving her feeling fitter and healthier than she has ever been. Undergoing chemotherapy would only set her back, physically, emotionally, and mentally. There is limited research that shows evidence suggesting the idea that cannabis treatment can alleviate some of the side-effects of cancer treatments. Even more limited research suggests that there may be an anti-cancer benefit to cannabis as well. Doctors and researchers generally feel that there needs to be more research done on the subject to provide a more definitive link. That has not stopped Kerri from joining a growing community of people using cannabis to treat their cancer. Since publicly announcing her decision to treat her brain cancer with cannabis, Kerri has received overwhelming support from her family and friends and from the community at large. Of course, there have been the usual cadre of detractors, including her own doctors who have since removed her as a patient from their practice, but that does not stop Kerri in her resolve to treat and conquer this cancer on her own terms.

26

PALMBEACHCANNABIS.COM | WINTER 2018

Kerri has dedicated her life to helping others through her public profile, using her Facebook and Instagram pages to chronicle her cancer journey and health regime. She has also raised an extraordinary $30,000 for Brain Tumour Research, a UK charity that donates 100% of its funds aims to provide sustainable brain tumor research in hopes of finding a cure. She is the living embodiment of a healthy approach to cannabis use and cancer treatment. GRASS ROOTS INDIA

Cannabis has been used in India in one form or another from thousands of years. The earliest use of Cannabis can be traced back to the holy Hindu texts; The Vedas, some where between 2000 and 1400 B.C. Among four Vedas; The Atharva Veda describes Cannabis as one of five sacred plants and a guardian angel live among its leaves. A bhang (cocktail made of cannabis with other ingredients) could be used to help attain delight, control fear and even to increase sexual appetite. During middle ages. Soldiers often took a bhang before entering to battle field, same as western soldiers took a swig of whiskey.

The god, Shiva is often associated with cannabis specially bhang. According to legend one story states that the lord, Shiva wandered off into the fields after an angry debate with his family. Drained the hot sun, he fell asleep under a leafy plant. When he woke up, he ate some leaves from plant because of his curiosity. Instantly he felled rejuvenated, eventually this plant became his favorite food and he became known as the Lord of Bhang. Devotees often consume Bhang during Maha-Shivratri (Hindu festival celebrated annually in honor of the god Shiva) and Holi (Hindu festival of colors). They drink bhang mostly without cannabis now a days because of regulations in India. Bhang also known as Thandai is India's very own desi cocktail,

made with cannabis and aromatic Indian spices and herbs. A must try drink for all those who want to get tipsy the Indian way. Bhang is a perfect healthy concoction, can be prepared easily at home with some selected ingredients such as aniseeds, watermelon seeds, rose petals, almonds, and milk. The recipe is as follow: Soak aniseeds, almonds, watermelon seeds, cannabis and rose petals in water and grind to make a smooth paste. Boil the milk and keep aside. Pour water into the paste and strain using filter to get clear liquid. In the strained liquid, add sugar, black pepper, powdered cardamom and saffron and mix well. Add milk to the mixture and serve chilled. Add some fresh cream to make this drink even more creamy. Garnish it with roasted and sliced almonds and pistachios and rose petals to make it more

ncing

With the development of next-generation gene sequencing technology, results from DNA testing can now provide individuals with a roadmap to navigate the array of cannabis products available.

U

ntil recently, no one could explain why cannabis users have such wildly dissimilar reactions. The same substance that makes one person euphoric and introspective makes another anxious and paranoid. Groundbreaking research over the last several years has provided answers, and scientists are revolutionizing medical marijuana as a result. It’s all in the DNA. Your genome, the sum total of your DNA, is

THE PROCESS

99.9 percent identical to everyone else’s. Just that tiny 0.1 percent difference explodes into millions of differences. Unless you have an identical twin, rest assured that your genome is unique. Just as DNA dictates eye color and physical features, it dictates biochemistry and metabolism. That’s why mapping and analyzing DNA is helping scientists predict how patients will react to cannabinoids. It’s enabling them to treat illnesses and relieve associated pain with custom-designed strains that don’t produce adverse side effects.

Genetic sequencing can now be done easilly and quickly with tests like the CannaGx DNA Test from melixgx. Just order a kit which will get delivered to your home, follow a few simple steps using the enclosed swabs to collect your DNA sample, then mail back your samples to the lab. In just a few weeks, you’ll receive a comprehensive genetic report.

Both you and your doctor can utilize test kit results to create a a tailored medical marijuana treatment plan.

The psychoactive property in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol, binds to a cellular structure known as cannabinoid receptor 1. CB1 receptors are present on cell surfaces throughout the body. When THC molecules latch onto them, THC alters normal brain signals. There is still much to learn about CB1 gene expression, but it is known that levels and distribution of the receptors

Results include: CBD vs.THC ratios, product recommendations, stress, anxiety and insomnia management.

PALMBEACHCANNABIS.COM | WINTER 2018

may be dysregulated. Some people have too many receptors while others have too few. A patient with too many CB1s is especially sensitive to THC. A patient with too few receives little benefit from it. For many users, marijuana dulls the perception of pain or relieves nausea and other maladies. For others, symptoms may include anxiety, weight gain or psychotic episodes. It was once thought that CB1 receptors and THC were, so to speak, made solely for each other. That’s why scientists focused only on THC when they tried to develop synthetic cannabis imitators that were more tolerable. Most of the medicines didn’t succeed because pharmacologists couldn’t figure out how to eliminate the unpleasant side effects. However, CB1 receptors are far more malleable than scientists once believed. They attract a number of chemical compounds in addition to THC. Endocannabinoids, for example, are naturally synthesized in the brain, organs, glands and immune cells throughout the body. They are so prevalent that they have bearing on mood, appetite, perception of pain and memory. A drug researcher and author named Alexandros Makriyannis has discovered dozens of other compatible compounds. Makriyannis works to synthesize chemicals that will imitate all the desired effects of medical marijuana while eliminating the undesired ones. He has even isolated a compound that appears to shut off the CB1 receptors. When he introduced a trick THC-like molecule, two helices in the CB1 receptor collapsed around it until it shrank to half its normal size. David M. Krantz is a coach and consultant in genetically based health and wellness in Asheville, North Carolina. He, too, has an idea about why people have different reactions to cannabinoids.

A gene named CYP2C9 manufactures an enzyme that breaks down THC in the body. Naturally occurring variations known as single nucleotide polymorphisms create each individual’s metabolism. That means that the effects of marijuana will be more intense and long-lasting for some people than for others. Krantz points to other implications for SNPs as well. By understanding them, experts can give individually specific advice about diet, exercise, medicines and other factors that contribute to optimal health. A pathologist specializing in laboratory science and genetics, Dr. Charles Sailey of Molecular Testing Labs located in Vancouver, Washington, is a big proponent of personalized medicine and the legitimization of cannabis as a treatment option. Heading the research team at MelixGx, he helped develop the CannaGx™ test. The test was the culmination of extensive research that involved examining the metabolic pathways of cannabis and identifying two enzymes, CYP2C9 and CYP2C19, responsible for metabolizing THC and CBD, respectively. A number of companies now offer DNA tests that analyze the genetic markers for cannabis metabolism and how they correlate with cannabis’s differing effects in individuals, but not all are created equal. At MelixGx, their CannaGx™ test, which is backed by over 2500 references, achieves the highest degree of accuracy, unlike common DNA test kits such as 23andMe, which can have innacurracy rates close to 20%. Consumers can feel secure that their tailored test reports are providing accurate recommendations on the ideal marijuana strains, ratios, methods, and dosing specifically suited to one's unique genetic profile. This is invaluable information for consumers attempting to navigate the different products out there.

THE BURNING QUESTION QUESTION: Is it really true that no one has ever died from cannabis? ANSWER: In a Sep. 20, 2003 editorial published in the British Medical Journal: Stephen Sidney, MD, Associate Director for Clinical Research at Kaiser Permanente, wrote that "No acute lethal overdoses of cannabis are known, in contrast to several of its illegal (for example, cocaine) and legal (for example, alcohol, aspirin, acetaminophen) counterparts." Indeed, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration drug sheet for marijuana reports that no deaths from marijuana overdose have ever been recorded. However, it can be argued that cannabis use has contributed to the deaths of individuals, such as from impairment during driving since it has the potential to inhibit someone’s ability to make safe decisions. Most medical experts will agree that while cannabis doesn’t cause major acute health problems , is much safer than other medications, and doesn’t directly cause overdose deaths, it can play an indirect role in fatalities. Unfortunately the exact number of marijuana-related deaths that occur annually is a challenge to determine.

DID YOU KNOW In 1978 the US government started the Compassionate Investigational New Drug (IND) program. Although closed for new patients in 1991, it still supplies 320360 marijuana cigarettes monthly to each of the four seriously ill patients remaining in the program.
